Oxidant-Controlled Regioselectivity In The Oxidative Arylation Of N-Acetylindoles, Shathaverdhan Potavathri, Ashley S. Dumas, Timothy A. Dwight, Gregory R. Naumiec, Jeffrey M. Hammann, Brenton Deboef

Chemistry Faculty Publications

N-Acetylindoles can be oxidatively coupled with arenes such as benzene or pentafluorobenzene in dioxane. The use of Cu(OAc)2 as the stoichiometric oxidant produces selective arylation at the 3-position of indole while AgOAc produces selective arylation at indole’s 2-position.

An Accessible Adventure : A Treasure Hunt For Students With Special Needs Through The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Lauren Foote

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many students with special needs visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium every year. The students are always excited to be there, however, many teachers find a stressful and challenging experience. A tool has been created for teachers to help focus their students and promote inquiry, exploration, and inspiration which will greatly improve student learning. Resources are currently available to supplement teachers' programs, but they do not include considerations for students with special needs. A multisensory guide has been developed for students with disabilities with aid of a veteran special needs teacher. This guide will work to ensure a successful and fun …

Monitoring Seasonal Surface Water Quality Variability In The Carmel River, Monterey County, Trevor Weidner-Holland Jan 2008

Monitoring Seasonal Surface Water Quality Variability In The Carmel River, Monterey County, Trevor Weidner-Holland

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Indicators of contamination from unknown sources have been observed on the Carmel River, California. This contamination was first suspected to be effluent discharge related to nearby homes. In an effort to identify the source and nature of this contamination, general physical and mineral properties, as well as total nitrogen and coliform bacteria were analyzed each month, at five sites in the Mid-Valley section of the Carmel River. Noticeable discharge was observed from a stormdrain pipe near Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Course. The stormdrain was only discharging during the months of July and August, and was thus not active during the …

Application Of A Geomorphic And Temporal Perspective To Wetland Management In North America, Loren M. Smith, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Douglas A. Wilcox, Mark M. Brinson Jan 2008

Application Of A Geomorphic And Temporal Perspective To Wetland Management In North America, Loren M. Smith, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Douglas A. Wilcox, Mark M. Brinson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The failure of managed wetlands to provide a broad suite of ecosystem services (e.g., carbon storage, wildlife habitat, ground-water recharge, storm-water retention) valuable to society is primarily the result of a lack of consideration of ecosystem processes that maintain productive wetland ecosystems or physical and social forces that restrict a manager’s ability to apply actions that allow those processes to occur. Therefore, we outline a course of action that considers restoration of ecosystem processes in those systems where off-site land use or physical alterations restrict local management. Upon considering a wetland system, or examining a particular management regime, there are …

Linking Ecosystem Processes With Wetland Management Goals: Charting A Course For A Sustainable Future, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Loren M. Smith, Douglas A. Wilcox, Bryant A. Browne

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Wetland management in the United States has never been as challenging as in today’s highly modified landscape. Initially, wetland science and management emerged as professions in response to widespread conversion of wetlands to other uses and concerns over negative impacts on wildlife populations, especially migratory birds. Consequently, wetland management was focused on wildlife, and the initial management technique was simply to protect wetlands. However, extensive conversion of lands for agricultural and urban expansion over the past 60 years has modified ecosystem processes at the landscape scale sufficiently to compromise wetland management activities on adjacent lands dedicated to conservation. Moreover, society …

M. Barber-Meyer, L. David Mech, P. J. White

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We conducted a 3-year study (May 2003–Apr 2006) of mortality of northern Yellowstone elk (Cervus elaphus) calves to determine the cause for the recruitment decline (i.e., 33 calves to 13 calves/100 adult F) following the restoration of wolves (Canis lupus). We captured, fit with radiotransmitters, and evaluated blood characteristics and disease antibody seroprevalence in 151 calves ≤ 6 days old (68M:83F). Concentrations (x, SE) of potential condition indicators were as follows: thyroxine (T4; 13.8 µg/dL, 0.43), serum urea nitrogen (SUN; 17.4 mg/dL, 0.57), c-glutamyltransferase (GGT; 66.4 IU/L, 4.36), gamma globulins (GG; 1.5 g/dL, 0.07), and insulin-like …

Factors Influencing Predation On Juvenile Ungulates And Natural Selection Implications, S. M. Barber-Meyer, L. D. Mech Jan 2008

Factors Influencing Predation On Juvenile Ungulates And Natural Selection Implications, S. M. Barber-Meyer, L. D. Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Juvenile ungulates are generally more vulnerable to predation than are adult ungulates other than senescent individuals, not only because of their relative youth, fragility, and inexperience, but also because of congenital factors. Linnell et al.’s (Wildl. Biol. 1: 209-223) extensive review of predation on juvenile ungulates concluded that research was needed to determine the predisposition of these juveniles to predation. Since then, various characteristics that potentially predispose juvenile ungulates have emerged including blood characteristics, morphometric and other condition factors, and other factors such as birth period, the mother’s experience, and spatial and habitat aspects. To the extent that any of …

Altered Gene Expression In The Brain And Liver Of Female Fathead Minnows Pimephales Promelas Rafinesque Exposed To Fadrozole, D. L. Villeneuve, I. Knoebl, P. Larkin, A. L. Miracle, B. J. Carter, N. D. Denslow, G. T. Ankley

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The fathead minnow Pimephales promelas is a small fish species widely used for ecotoxicology research and regulatory testing in North America. This study used a 2000 gene oligonucleotide microarray to evaluate the effects of the aromatase inhibitor, fadrozole, on gene expressionin the liver and brain tissue of exposed females. Reproductive measures, plasma vitellogenin and gene expression data for the brain isoform of aromatase (cytP19B), vitellogenin precursors and transferrin provided evidence supporting the efficacy of the fadrozole exposure. Unsupervised analysis of the microarray results identified 20 genes in brain and 41 in liver as significantly up-regulated and seven genes in brain …

Restoration Of Mangrove Plantations And Colonisation By Native Species In Leizhou Bay, South China, Hai Ren, Shuguang Jian, Hongfang Lu, Qianmei Zhang, Weijun Shen, Weidong Han, Zuoyun Yin, Qinfeng Guo Jan 2008

Restoration Of Mangrove Plantations And Colonisation By Native Species In Leizhou Bay, South China, Hai Ren, Shuguang Jian, Hongfang Lu, Qianmei Zhang, Weijun Shen, Weidong Han, Zuoyun Yin, Qinfeng Guo

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

To examine the natural colonization of native mangrove species into remediated exotic mangrove stands in Leizhou Bay, South China, we compared soil physical–chemical properties, community structure and recruitments of barren mangrove areas, native mangrove species plantations, and exotic mangrove species—Sonneratia apetala Buch.Ham—between plantations and natural forest. We found that severely degraded mangrove stands could not regenerate naturally without human intervention due to severely altered local environments, whereas some native species had been recruited into the 4–10 year S. apetala plantations. In the first 10 years, the exotic species S. apetala grew better than native species such as Rhizophora stylosa …

Crying Wolf: Concluding That Wolves Were Not Restored, L. David Mech Jan 2008

Crying Wolf: Concluding That Wolves Were Not Restored, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

In 2007, the USA removed (delisted) the grey wolf (Canis lupus) in the upper Midwest from the Endangered Species List. After 35 years of being considered endangered, these wolves had increased from 750 in 38 400 km2 of Minnesota (Fuller et al. 1992) to over 4100 inhabiting 110 000 km2 of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Conservationists celebrated this event as a most significant success. Suddenly, however, this milestone was challenged by Leonard & Wayne (2007) based on preliminary genetic findings that wolves of the upper Midwest 100 years ago were different from 69 per cent of the …

Long-Term Dynamics Of Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) And Its Biocontrol Agent, Flea Beetles In The Genus Aphthona, Diane L. Larson, James B. Grace, Jennifer L. Larson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Three flea beetle species (Aphthona spp.), first introduced into North America in 1988, have come to be regarded as effective biological control organisms for leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula). The black flea beetles (Aphthona lacertosa and A. czwalinae) in particular have been shown to cause reductions in leafy spurge stem counts in the northern Great Plains, while the brown flea beetle (A. nigriscutis) has persisted and spread, but has not been found to be as effective at controlling leafy spurge. The ability of black flea beetles to control leafy spurge in any given year, …

The Role Of Multihaem Cytochromes In The Respiration Of Nitrite In Escherichia Coli And Fe(Iii) In Shewanella Oneidensis, Thomas A. Clarke, Tracey Holley, Robert S. Hartshorne, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara, Liang Shi, David J. Richardson Jan 2008

Richardson

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The periplasmic nitrite reductase system from Escherichia coli and the extracellular Fe (III) reductase system from Shewanella oneidensis contain multihaem c-type cytochromes as electron carriers and terminal reductases. The position and orientation of the haem cofactors in multihaem cytochromes from different bacteria often show significant conservation despite different arrangements of the polypeptide chain. We propose that the decahaem cytochromes of the iron reductase system MtrA, MtrC and OmcA comprise pentahaem ‘modules’ similar to the electron donor protein, NrfB, from E. coli. To demonstrate this, we have isolated and characterized the N-terminal pentahaem module of MtrA by preparing a …

Engineering Microbial Fuels Cells: Recent Patents And New Directions, Justin C. Biffinger, Bradley R. Ringeisen Jan 2008

Engineering Microbial Fuels Cells: Recent Patents And New Directions, Justin C. Biffinger, Bradley R. Ringeisen

United States Navy: Publications

Fundamental research into how microbes generate electricity within microbial fuel cells (MFCs) has far outweighed the practical application and large scale development of microbial energy harvesting devices. MFCs are considered alternatives to standard commercial polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology because the fuel supply does not need to be purified, ambient operating temperatures are maintained with biologically compatible materials, and the biological catalyst is self-regenerating. The generation of electricity during wastewater treatment using MFCs may profoundly affect the approach to anaerobic treatment technologies used in wastewater treatment as a result of developing this energy harvesting technology. However, the materials …

Iq Decline In Cross-Sectional Studies Of Schizophrenia: Methodology And Interpretation, William S. Kremen, Larry J. Seidman, Stephen V. Faraone, Ming T. Tsuang Jan 2008

Iq Decline In Cross-Sectional Studies Of Schizophrenia: Methodology And Interpretation, William S. Kremen, Larry J. Seidman, Stephen V. Faraone, Ming T. Tsuang

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Some researchers have compared neuropsychological performance in schizophrenia groups with and without presumed IQ decline. Inherent in this approach is an assumption that group differences are due to different IQ trajectories (stable vs. declining), but neuropsychological differences could be a function of current IQ regardless of the presence or absence of previous IQ decline. We examined this issue in 93 normal controls and in 80 patients classified as having preserved (27.5%), deteriorated (50%), or compromised (22.5%) intellect based on IQ and reading recognition-IQ difference scores. We also examined group differences in verbal and performance IQ. Deteriorated patients had the largest …

On The Nature Of The Action-Omission Network, Theodore Y. Blumoff Jan 2008

On The Nature Of The Action-Omission Network, Theodore Y. Blumoff

Articles

This work explores the foundations of a deeply felt intuition that pervades American jurisprudence: the act-omission distinction ("AvO"). I conclude that Hume's understanding of the origins of our conception of duties presaged an important insight from modem evolutionary theory: our tendency to engage in altruistic conduct begins, although it clearly does not end, with the physical reality of personal kinship in an unkind world, and it tends to extend out in a social network of ever-diminishing strength the farther we move from the nuclear family. The thesis begins with the observation that we privilege "acts" over "omissions" for purposes of …

Exploring Scientific Literacy: How Australia Measures Up. The Pisa 2006 Survey Of Students' Scientific, Reading And Mathematical Literacy Skills, Sue Thomson, Lisa De Bortoli Jan 2008

Exploring Scientific Literacy: How Australia Measures Up. The Pisa 2006 Survey Of Students' Scientific, Reading And Mathematical Literacy Skills, Sue Thomson, Lisa De Bortoli

OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Australia

The PISA 2006 assessment more clearly separates knowledge about science from knowledge of science. Knowledge of science refers to knowledge of the natural world across the major fields of physics, chemistry, biological science, Earth and space science, and science-based technology. Knowledge about science refers to knowledge of the means (scientific enquiry) and the goals (scientific explanations) of science. The PISA framework further elaborates on, and gives greater emphasis to, knowledge about science as an aspect of science performance, through the addition of elements that underscore students´ knowledge about the characteristic features of science. The PISA scientific competencies can be thought …
