Browse all Theses and Dissertations

TCDD (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) elicits tissue-, sex-, and species-specific effects. This study compares the hepatic response to an oral dose of TCDD in immature ovariectomized (i.o.) C57BL/6 mice (30 µg/kg) and i.o. Sprague-Dawley rats (10 µg/kg), at 72, 120, and 168 h post-dose. Hepatic lipid extracts were analyzed by 13C and 31P NMR, and aqueous extracts by 1H and 31P NMR.

Consistent with increased lipid content in mice (p≤0.05), TCDD induced increases in hepatic triacylglycerides (TAG), cholesterol, and fatty acids. Principal component analysis of 13C spectra show treatment groups separate in mice, but not rats. …

The Recent mammalian fauna of Nebraska is composed of 89 native species, 8 domestic species that can have feral populations, and 4 wild species introduced by humans, but not by intentional action. Thus, the included checklist and dichotomous key contain 101 species of mammals. Of the native species, 36 are rodents, 20 carnivores, 13 bats, 7 shrews and mole, 7 even-toed ungulates, 4 rabbits and hares, 1 armadillo, and 1 opossum. Another 8 species are identified as potentially occurring in peripheral areas of Nebraska. The bibliography includes 1693 entries that each contain data concerning one or more species of mammals …

Memory And Forgetting In A Time Of Violence: Brian Friel’S Meta-History Plays, Tony Crowley Jan 2008

Memory And Forgetting In A Time Of Violence: Brian Friel’S Meta-History Plays, Tony Crowley

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

In the 1980s, Brian Friel, one of Ireland’s most successful twentieth century dramatists, authored two plays – Translations and Making History – which were concerned with major events in colonial history. Given the context in which the plays were written – Northern Ireland was in a state of war at the time – the playwright’s choice of topics (the introduction of the National Schools and the Ordnance Survey in the nineteenth century and the failed Gaelic revolt against English rule and the Flight of the Earls in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) was both pointed and politically contentious. Yet, the …

Folks, I'm so pleased to be here with you today to talk about the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the exciting, valuable contributions our faculty, staff, and students are making to Nebraska and, indeed, the world. Last year an independent study found the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources provides a conservative 15-to-1 return on state tax dollars invested with us. We call that study the At Work for Nebraska study because well, that's what we are about.

Ecosystem Services Beyond Valuation, Regulation, And Philanthropy: Integrating Consumer Values Into The Economy, Stephen K. Swallow, Elizabeth C. Smith, Emi Uchida, Christopher M. Anderson Jan 2008

Ecosystem Services Beyond Valuation, Regulation, And Philanthropy: Integrating Consumer Values Into The Economy, Stephen K. Swallow, Elizabeth C. Smith, Emi Uchida, Christopher M. Anderson

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications

Ecosystem services have been identified as a central link between society, or human systems, and the structure and function of natural systems (e.g., U.S. LTER 2007, MEA 2005). A fundamental economic problem is that while almost everyone—environmental groups, policy makers, and broad segments of the general public—seems to believe ecosystem services are valuable, the available public policy tools and approaches for private action fall short, and often omit, a direct link to the real values of the people. If ecosystem services are of economic value, then a fundamental challenge concerns how to identify the link between ecosystem services and the …

Is A Previous Unplanned Pregnancy A Risk Factor For A Subsequent Unplanned Pregnancy?, Lindsay M. Kuroki, Jenifer E. Allsworth, Colleen A. Redding, Jeffrey D. Blume, Jeffrey F. Peipert

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine whether a history of unplanned pregnancy was a risk factor for a subsequent unplanned pregnancy.

Study Design: We analyzed 542 women aged 14-35 years, enrolled in Project PROTECT, a randomized clinical trial to promote dual-method contraception use to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancy. Predictors of unplanned pregnancy were assessed by comparing women with and without a history of unplanned pregnancy.

Results: More than 1 in 5 women (22.5%) experienced an unintended pregnancy. History of an unintended pregnancy was a predictor of unintended pregnancy (adjusted odds ratio, 1.91; 95% confidence …

The Charity Ecosystem, Willie Cheng Jan 2008

The Charity Ecosystem, Willie Cheng

Social Space

The non-profit sector is slowly moving from an era of ‘Just Doing Good’ to one of ‘Doing Good Well’. Willie Cheng argues that this new era requires the various components of an effective and self-sustaining charity ecosystem – regulator, capacity builders, charities, beneficiaries and the community (individuals, corporations, media and government) – to be in place and functioning properly.

The Social And Behavioral Factors That Affect Obesity In Oecd Countries, Sanjana Desai Jan 2008

The Social And Behavioral Factors That Affect Obesity In Oecd Countries, Sanjana Desai

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper investigates the factors that affect obesity in the population of the member countries of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This study incorporates existing information of the most likely variables that would influence obesity in these member countries for a decade (1990-2000). The study looks at contributing factors that are both innate and acquired, such as Alcohol Consumption, Low-birth weight, sugar consumption, smoking (consumption of tobacco), and protein intake and public and private expenditure on education. Using macro-level data from various sources, the results generally suggest that factors like alcohol consumption, low-birth weight and sugar consumption …

The Impact Of Directionality In Predications On Text Mining, Gondy Leroy, Marcelo Fiszman, Thomas C. Rindflesch Jan 2008

The Impact Of Directionality In Predications On Text Mining, Gondy Leroy, Marcelo Fiszman, Thomas C. Rindflesch

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The number of publications in biomedicine is increasing enormously each year. To help researchers digest the information in these documents, text mining tools are being developed that present co-occurrence relations between concepts. Statistical measures are used to mine interesting subsets of relations. We demonstrate how directionality of these relations affects interestingness. Support and confidence, simple data mining statistics, are used as proxies for interestingness metrics. We first built a test bed of 126,404 directional relations extracted from biomedical abstracts, which we represent as graphs containing a central starting concept and 2 rings of associated relations. We manipulated directionality in four …

Input And Output Of Dissolved Organic And Inorganic Nitrogen In Subtropical Forests Of South China Under High Air Pollution, Yunting T. Fang, Per Gundersen, Jiangming M. Mo, Weixing Zhu

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The nitrogen (N) emissions to the atmosphere and N deposition to forest ecosystems are increasing rapidly in Southeast Asia, but little is known about the fates and effects of elevated N deposition in forest ecosystems in this warm and humid region. Here we report the concentrations and fluxes of dissolved inorganic ( DIN) and organic N ( DON) in precipitation, throughfall, surface runoff and soil solution for three subtropical forests in a region of South China under high air pollution over two years ( 2004 and 2005), to investigate how deposited N is processed, and to examine the importance of …

A Stochastic Simulation Procedure For Selecting Herbicides With Minimum Environmental Impact, Ben D. Giudice, Arash Massoudieh, Xinjiang Huang, Thomas M. Young

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

A mathematical environmental transport model of roadside applied herbicides at the site scale (∼100 m) was stochastically applied using a Monte-Carlo technique to simulate the concentrations of 33 herbicides in stormwater runoff. Field surveys, laboratory sorption data, and literature data were used to generate probability distribution functions for model input parameters to allow extrapolation of the model to the regional scale. Predicted concentrations were compared to EPA acute toxicity end points for aquatic organisms to determine the frequency of potentially toxic outcomes. Results are presented for three geographical regions in California and two highway geometries. For a given herbicide, frequencies …

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

The articles in this special issue report the efforts of the Miami Youth Development Project (YDP), a community-supported positive youth development program of outreach research that draws on a developmental intervention science (DIS) perspective (i.e., a fusion of the developmental and intervention science literatures). These reports illustrate how the application of DIS outreach research contributes to knowledge of human development at all levels (practical as well as methodological, theoretical, and metatheoretical). Consistent with a DIS outreach research approach, YDP is committed to the use of descriptive and explanatory knowledge about changes within human systems that occur across the life span …

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This article illustrates how developmental intervention science outreach research contributes to knowledge development on the promotion of positive identity development by describing results from the Miami Youth Development Project. The project is committed to the use of descriptive and explanatory knowledge about evidence-based individual and institutional intervention strategies for promoting developmental change in self and identity. Our efforts, described here, include a method for measuring theoretically and personally meaningful identity change, a procedure for integrating key aspects of qualitative and quantitative data through relational data analysis, and an evidence-based positive youth development intervention that fosters measurable and meaningful identity change.

Nanoparticle Inhalation Augments Particle-Dependent Systemic Microvascular Dysfunction, Timothy R. Nurkiewicz, Dale W. Porter, Ann F. Hubbs, Jared L. Cumpston, Bean T. Chen, David G. Frazer, Vincent Castranova

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

We have shown that pulmonary exposure to fine particulate matter (PM) impairs endothelium dependent dilation in systemic arterioles. Ultrafine PM has been suggested to be inherently more toxic by virtue of its increased surface area. The purpose of this study was to determine if ultrafine PM (or nanoparticle) inhalation produces greater microvascular dysfunction than fine PM. Rats were exposed to fine or ultrafine TiO2 aerosols (primary particle diameters of ~1 μm and ~21 nm, respectively) at concentrations which do not alter bronchoalveolar lavage markers of pulmonary inflammation or lung damage.

Results

By histopathologic evaluation, no significant inflammatory changes were …
