Plant Terpenoids: Applications And Future Potentials, Sam Zwenger, Chhandak Basu Jan 2008

Plant Terpenoids: Applications And Future Potentials, Sam Zwenger, Chhandak Basu

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The importance of terpenes in both nature and human application is difficult to overstate. Basic knowledge of terpene and isoprene biosynthesis and chemistry has accelerated the pace at which scientists have come to understand many plant biochemical and metabolic processes. The abundance and diversity of terpene compounds in nature can have ecosystem-wide influences. Although terpenes have permeated human civilization since the Egyptians, terpene synthesis pathways are only now being understood in great detail. The use of bioinformatics and molecular databases has largely contributed to analyzing exactly how and when terpenes are synthesized. Additionally, terpene synthesis is beginning to be understood …

The Darwinian Cage: Evolutionary Psychology As Moral Science, Richard Hamilton Jan 2008

The Darwinian Cage: Evolutionary Psychology As Moral Science, Richard Hamilton

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

The jargon of evolutionary psychology has recently migrated from a few minor American universities into the academic mainstream and thence into Sunday supplements and dinner party conversations. It has even formed the backdrop to at least one award-winning novel (McEwan, 1997). Evolutionary psychology and other similar ‘biological’ explanations of human conduct pervade the Zeitgeist and, as Kenan Malik has persuasively argued, they tap into a prevailing mood of cultural pessimism. Evolutionary psychology, it seems, speaks to our desire to see the worst in ourselves (Malik, 2002).

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

The digital revolution is in the midst of changing the very nature of systematic entomology. The discipline has been wrenched from the confines of traditional paper outlets for the dissemination of data through the brave new world of the internet, on-line journals and email attachments. At the root of this renaissance, however, there exists a need for the expertise, experience and basic courage of high-quality researchers to continue probing the Earth for the unusual, the spectacular, and the unbelievable.

Ontology Driven Semantic Provenance For Heterogeneous Bionomics Experimental Data, Satya S. Sahoo, Michael L. Raymer, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth, William S. York

Kno.e.sis Publications

Scientific experimental data generated by all the bionomic technologies is characterized by heterogeneity in its representation formats, constituents, and generation processes and, therefore, also in its usage. Using the proteomics domain we demonstrate the important role of provenance information o manage, interpret and analyze experimental data. We present a novel approach that employs an ontology as a knowledge model to automatically create semantic provenance information for high-throughput mass spectrometry (MS) data in the glycoproteomics domain. The Semantic Provenance Annotation of Data in protEomics (SPADE) implementation is based on the ProPreO ontology, a large-process ontology ( ~500 classes, 40 named relationships …

Colonization And Predation In Isolated Seagrass Beds: An Experimental Assessment From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Matthew W. Johnson, Kenneth L. Heck Jr.

Gulf of Mexico Science

We tested the effects of habitat fragmentation on the structure (community composition and biomass) and function (predation rates as assessed by tethering) of circular artificial seagrass units (ASUs) located in an area removed from the influence of immigrants from established seagrass meadows. ASUs varied by size (0.1-10 m2), perimeter, and perimeter:area ratios (P/A). Blue crabs and hermit crabs accounted for the greatest number of individuals and biomass present on the ASUs, but amphipods, shrimps, fishes, and gastropods were also present. We detected few significant relationships between abundance or biomass and patch size, perimeter, or P/A ratios. In tethering …

U-Scores For Multivariate Data In Sports, Knut M. Wittkowski, Tingting Song, Kent Anderson, John E. Daniels Jan 2008

U-Scores For Multivariate Data In Sports, Knut M. Wittkowski, Tingting Song, Kent Anderson, John E. Daniels

Krueger Laboratory

In many sport competitions athletes, teams, or countries are evaluated based on several variables. The strong assumptions underlying traditional ‘linear weight’ scoring systems (that the relative importance, interactions and linearizing transformations of the variables are known) can often not be justified on theoretical grounds, and empirical ‘validation’ of weights, interactions and transformations, is problematic when a ‘gold standard’ is lacking. With μ-scores (u-scores for multivariate data) one can integrate information even if the variables have different scales and unknown interactions or if the events counted are not directly comparable, as long as the variables have an ‘orientation’. Using baseball as …

Saving Camels From Straws: How Propagule Pressure-Based Prevention Policies Can Reduce The Risk Of Biological Invasion, Jamie K. Reaser, Laura A. Meyerson, Betsy Von Holle

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Nonnative species that harm or have the potential to cause harm to the environment, economy, or human health are known as invasive species. Propagule pressure may be the most important factor in establishment success of nonnative species of various taxa in a variety of ecosystems worldwide, and strong evidence is emerging that propagule pressure determines both the scale of invasion extent and impact. In a limited way, the US government is applying a “propagule pressure approach” in a variety of prevention policy contexts aimed at minimizing the impact of harmful organisms. However, there are also readily apparent opportunities for enacting …

Soybean Genomics: Developments Through The Use Of Cultivar “Forrest”, David A. Lightfoot Jan 2008

Soybean Genomics: Developments Through The Use Of Cultivar “Forrest”, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

Legume crops are particularly important due to their ability to support symbiotic nitrogen fixation, a key to sustainable crop production and reduced carbon emissions. Soybean (Glycine max) has a special position as a major source of increased protein and oil production in the common grass-legume rotation. The cultivar “Forrest” has saved US growers billions of dollars in crop losses due to resistances programmed into the genome. Moreover, since Forrest grows well in the north-south transition zone, breeders have used this cultivar as a bridge between the southern and northern US gene pools. Investment in Forrest genomics resulted in the development …

Legal Advocacy And Education Reform: Litigating School Exclusion, Dean Rivkin Jan 2008

Legal Advocacy And Education Reform: Litigating School Exclusion, Dean Rivkin

Scholarly Works

School exclusion has existed as a dark side of public education since the creation of America's public schools. Several cases in the United States Supreme Court memorably invalidated State and school system efforts to deny equal educational opportunities to marginalized school children and youth. In these cases, the over-riding multiple values of education were poignantly articulated in the majority decisions.

School exclusion has stubbornly persisted. It takes many forms. This article surveys the most prominent pathways to school exclusion, highlighting what has been called the "School-To-Prison-Pipeline." Various legal challenges are also evaluated. The pros and cons of litigating school exclusion …

Movement, Dive Behavior, And Survival Of California Sea Lions (Zalophus Californianus) Post-Treatment For Domoic Acid Toxicosis, Kate Thomas Jan 2008

Movement, Dive Behavior, And Survival Of California Sea Lions (Zalophus Californianus) Post-Treatment For Domoic Acid Toxicosis, Kate Thomas

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Domoic acid (DA) is a neuroexcitatory toxin that is increasingly causing strandings and mortality of marine mammals. The hippocampus of mammalian brains; associated with learning, memory, and spatial navigation, is one of the predominant tissues affected by DA exposure. California sea lions stranding from 2003 to 2006 due to DA toxicosis were classified as having acute (n = 12) or chronic neurologic (n = 22) clinical signs. Chronic neurologic cases were examined by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to determine the extent of brain damage related to DA exposure. Brain damage included hippocampal and parahippocampal atrophy, temporal horn enlargement, and pathological …

Bridging The Gap: Home-School Partnerships In Kindergarten, Keenjal Pattni-Shah Jan 2008

Bridging The Gap: Home-School Partnerships In Kindergarten, Keenjal Pattni-Shah

Frank Dilley Award for Outstanding Doctoral Study

Although home-school partnerships support Kindergarten children's development of vocabulary, the alphabetic principle, and phonological awareness, the mechanisms through which these partnerships are established and facilitated with immigrant parents from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are largely unknown. Therefore, the major research questions that guided this qualitative, grounded theory study focused on exploring how successful Kindergarten teachers defined home-school partnerships with parents, the strategies the teachers used to communicate with parents, the ways these teachers reached out to parents to create and sustain partnerships, and how the teachers used these partnerships to support children's learning. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory served as the …

Investigation Of Asphalt Pavement Analyzer Testing Program In Nebraska, Minki Hong, Yong-Rak Kim Jan 2008

Investigation Of Asphalt Pavement Analyzer Testing Program In Nebraska, Minki Hong, Yong-Rak Kim

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

The asphalt pavement analyzer (APA) has been widely used to evaluate hot-mix asphalt (HMA) rutting potential in mix design and quality control – quality assurance (QC-QA) applications, because the APA testing and its data analyses are relatively simple, rapid, and easy. However, as demonstrated in many studies and also experienced by the state of Nebraska, the APA testing is in question due to its high testing variability and a lack of sufficient correlation with actual filed performance. The primary objective of this research was to find critical materials and/or mixture design factors affecting APA test results so as to eventually …

Audit Of Antenatal Testing Of Sexually Transmissible Infections And Blood Borne Viruses At Western Australian Hospitals, B. G. Combs, K. S.H. Kwan, C. M. Giele, Donna Mak

Medical Conference Papers

In August 2007, the Western Australian Department of Health (DOH) released updated recommendations for testing of sexually transmissible infections (STI) and blood-borne viruses (BBV) in antenates. Prior to this, the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) antenatal testing recommendations had been accepted practice in most antenatal settings. The RANZCOG recommends that testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C be offered at the first antenatal visit. The DOH recommends that in addition, chlamydia testing be offered. We conducted a baseline audit of antenatal STI/BBV testing in women who delivered at selected public hospitals before the …
