Transition To Adulthood For Homeless Adolescents, William G. Tierney, Jarrett T. Gupton, Ronald E. Hallett
Benerd College Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Education plays a critical role in how adolescents mature into adults. A vulnerable, and often forgotten, sub-population of the poor is homeless youth, for whom lack of a stable or adequate residence creates a unique set of educational barriers. The Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis (CHEPA) spent 18 months documenting the experiences of homeless adolescents in Los Angeles, deriving data from 123 interviews with homeless adolescents between the ages of 14 and 19, and an additional 45 interviews with shelter staff, social workers, parents, teachers, and school district administrators. Follow-up interviews were conducted with 30 of the youth to …
At-Risk In The Virtual Classroom: A Handbook For Student Success, Scott F. Peth
At-Risk In The Virtual Classroom: A Handbook For Student Success, Scott F. Peth
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Online education, also known as"the virtual classroom", has proliferated in the United States, as well as in much of the world, in the last few years. Indeed, virtual schooling is one of the fastest-growing areas in K-12 education."In its 2005 report, the National Center for Education Statistics found that 36% of all school districts had students participating in virtual courses, for a total of 300,000 students, and this number is projected to explode in the next decade." (Roblyer, 2006, p. 32). Many students who are considered"at-risk" are looking to the virtual classroom as an alternative to the traditional classroom where …

Missouri S&T 2008 Institutional Self Study Report, Missouri University Of Science And Technology
Self-Study for North Central Association accreditation
The present North Central Association accreditation self study is the most significant organizational self evaluation in the history of Missouri University of Science and Technology This study has made it abundantly evident that the university is a strong academic institution. The critical occurrences of recent university top leadership changes, an institutional name change, and organizational restructuring during the self study process indeed are unusual simultaneous occurrences in the life of Missouri S&T. These events have measurably influenced the university’s external and internal perspectives related to its operation and the self study has permitted a quantitative reflection of the “before-during-and-after” impact …

Polystyrene As A Medium In Reverse-Phase Separation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Madhavi Mantha
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the research was to design a method using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) that would separate the sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) designated by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as priority pollutants on two different kinds of polystyrene (PS) in the reversed phase. One was a zirconia-based column coated with polystyrene. The other was a polystyrene divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) column. The idea behind using these columns was to take advantage of extreme retention of PAHs by these columns by using high temperatures or temperature programming in order to reduce the amount of organic modifier in the mobile phases to perform …

Using Audio-Visual Technology In Online Teaching: A Study Of Students' Reactions, Frank Wyrostek, James Haefner
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
This study surveyed students who had taken an online managerial finance classes to measure the effectiveness and impact of audio-visual technologies on anxiety levels, preferred learning styles, satisfaction, and ease in mastering course material. Results showed that a learning style that favors both audio and visual teaching methods existed. Using audio-visual pedagogical techniques helped reduce students’ anxiety levels and created a more personal atmosphere for the online class. The benefits of a more personal environment significantly correlated with both mastering the material and understanding complex processes involved in finance. In Addition, the authors speculate on the potential connection between reduced …

Environmental Conditions Affect Sperm Competition Risk In Japanese Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Paul Switzer, Carissa Schoenick, Patrick Enstrom
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Males of many species guard their mates to prevent rivals from usurping paternity of the potential offspring. Environmental conditions, such as temperature, may affect a male’s ability to guard a female effectively and consequently the amount of sperm competition that occurs. We tested whether temperature and light affected mating behavior in laboratory experiments on the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman, a species in which males guard females for minutes to many hours after mating. When tested in groups, under conditions of high temperature and high light, males guarded females for shorter periods of time and males and females both mated …

Understanding the toxicodynamics of wildlife populations in contaminated ecosystems is one of the greatest challenges in ecotoxicology today. The goal is to manage these populations to minimize risk to ecosystem integrity as well as human health. Ecological risk assessments (ERAs) in the United States are designed to meet the regulatory mandates of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an ERA evaluates the potential adverse effects that human activities have on the ' ora and fauna that de( ne an ecosystem (U.S. Environmental Protection …

Severity Of Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms Depends On Developmental Stage Of Long–Evans Rats, Chun-Shiang Chung, Jian Wang, Monh Wehman, Dennis E. Rhoads
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
To investigate alcohol dependency and the potential role of age of initial alcohol consumption, Long–Evans (LE) rats were fed an ethanol-containing liquid diet starting at postnatal (P) ages (days): P23–27 (juvenile), P35–45 (adolescent) or P65–97 (young adult). Severity of subsequent withdrawal symptoms was dependent on age when consumption began and on duration of alcohol consumption. Frequency of withdrawal seizures was highest for rats starting consumption as juveniles, intermediate for adolescents and lowest for adults. Normalized to body weight, alcohol consumption was significantly higher for adolescent and juvenile rats than for adults. Sprague–Dawley rats that began alcohol consumption as adolescents (P35) …

We have identified at least 2 highly promiscuous major histocompatibility complex class II T-cell epitopes in the Fc fragment of IgG that are capable of specifically activating CD4+CD25HiFoxP3+ natural regulatory T cells (nTRegs). Coincubation of these regulatory T-cell epitopes or “Tregitopes” and antigens with peripheral blood mononuclear cells led to a suppression of effector cytokine secretion, reduced proliferation of effector T cells, and caused an increase in cell surface markers associated with TRegs such as FoxP3. In vivo administration of the murine homologue of the Fc region Tregitope resulted in suppression of …

This paper explores changing perceptions of the natural environment among the Kelabit, an indigenous people of the Borneo interior. It considers both traditional and post-Christian conversion understandings about forest spaces. The former animistic ritual practices of the Kelabit centered on a spiritual dialogue with the natural world and this dialogue was often marked by active efforts to avoid or mitigate danger through ritual practice. One key example presented here is the former ceremony of 'calling the eagle' (nawar keniu), a ritual employed in times of crisis that exemplifies the dialogical and entwined relationship Kelabit had to the natural world. Such …

Old Acetogens, New Light, Steven L. Daniel, Harold L. Drake, Anita S. Gößner
Old Acetogens, New Light, Steven L. Daniel, Harold L. Drake, Anita S. Gößner
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Acetogens utilize the acetyl-CoA Wood-Ljungdahl pathway as a terminal electron-accepting, energy-conserving, CO2-fixing process. The decades of research to resolve the enzymology of this pathway (1) preceded studies demonstrating that acetogens not only harbor a novel CO2-fixing pathway, but are also ecologically important, and (2) overshadowed the novel microbiological discoveries of acetogens and acetogenesis. The first acetogen to be isolated, Clostridium aceticum, was reported by Klaas Tammo Wieringa in 1936, but was subsequently lost. The second acetogen to be isolated, Clostridium thermoaceticum, was isolated by Francis Ephraim Fontaine and co-workers in 1942. C. thermoaceticum became the most extensively studied acetogen and …

Genomic Organization And Phylogenetic Utility Of Deer Mouse (Peromyscus Maniculatus) Lymphotoxin-Alpha And Lymphotoxin-Beta, Tiffany Richens, Aparna D.N. Palmer, Joseph Prescott, Tony Schountz
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are among the most common mammals in North America and are important reservoirs of several human pathogens, including Sin Nombre hantavirus (SNV). SNV can establish a life-long apathogenic infection in deer mice, which can shed virus in excrement for transmission to humans. Patients that die from hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) have been found to express several proinflammatory cytokines, including lymphotoxin (LT), in the lungs. It is thought that these cytokines contribute to the pathogenesis of HCPS. LT is not expressed by virus-specific CD4+ T cells from infected deer mice, suggesting a limited role for this …
