The Genetic, Social, & Behavioral Factors That Motivate Parents To Abuse Their Children, Bradley M. Garner Jan 2008

The Genetic, Social, & Behavioral Factors That Motivate Parents To Abuse Their Children, Bradley M. Garner

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper examines the influence of economic, genetic, behavioral, and social factors on the parental choice to abuse one’s child. I derive a choice model for the parents based on McFadden’s (1974) conditional logit model. Within society, the parent or parents not only bear the responsibility for their child’s well being, but also for ensuring the child will grow up to be an educated, productive member of society. Through the examination of individual parent and child behavior patterns, as well as numerous social and economic factors from the Physical Violence in American Families Survey of 1985, I show that after …

Imaging The Airways, Betsy Skrip

Theses

The IMAGING THE AIRWAYS thesis project is a multidiscipline and multimedia endeavor consisting of two main parts: I. 3D Modeling of a Complete Respiratory Airway for Use in Computational Flow Dynamics Studies of Particle Deposition in the Lungs and II. Creation of an Educational Animation about the Respiratory System for Use in RIT’s Human Visualization Project and CollaboRITorium. Part I involved collaboration with RIT’s Mechanical Engineering Department to construct a 3D model of one complete respiratory pathway, from the oral cavity to the site of gas exchange between the lungs and the blood. The project is a continuation of thesis …

Extracting, Representing And Mining Semantic Metadata From Text: Facilitating Knowledge Discovery In Biomedicine, Cartic Ramakrishnan

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The information access paradigm offered by most contemporary text information systems is a search-and-sift paradigm where users have to manually glean and aggregate relevant information from the large number of documents that are typically returned in response to keyword queries. Expecting the users to glean and aggregate information has lead to several inadequacies in these information systems. Owing to the size of many text databases, search-and-sift is a very tedious often requiring repeated keyword searches refining or generalizing queries terms. A more serious limitation arises from the lack of automated mechanisms to aggregate content across different documents to discover new …

Between-Year Survival And Rank Transitions In Male Black-Capped Chickadees (Poecile Atricapillus): A Multistate Modeling Approach, Kristin A. Schubert, Daniel J. Mennill, Scott M. Ramsay, Ken A. Otter, Laurene M. Ratcliffe, Cornelia Kraus

Biology Faculty Publications

In dominance-structured animal societies, variation in individual fitness is often related to social status. Like many passerine birds, Black-capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) have a short average adult life-expectancy (Ø2 years); however, the maximum recorded life span is >5× as long. Enhanced annual survival could contribute to greater lifetime reproductive success for male Black-capped Chickadees with high social rank. We used multistate capture–mark–recapture models to estimate annual survival of male Black-capped Chickadees in Ontario using resighting and recapture data collected from 1997 to 2002. Our goal was to evaluate support for an influence of rank on annual survival and …

A Developmental Intervention Approach To Promoting Positive Development: Pathways Of Intervention Change, Marilyn J. Montgomery, William M. Kurtines, Laura Ferrer-Wreder, Steven L. Berman, Carolyn Cass Lorente, Ervin Briones, Wendy Silverman, Rachel Ritchie, Kyle Eichas

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This paper describes work directed toward creating community-supported positive youth development interventions that draw on a developmental intervention science outreach research approach. With respect to developmental interventions, this approach focuses on creating evidence-based longitudinal change intervention strategies for promoting long-term developmental change. The paper describes three broad challenges (theoretical, methodological, and meta-theoretical) that the authors faced in their efforts to develop and implement community-supported intervention programs built on this approach. The authors describe first the theoretical challenges they addressed in developing the conceptual framework for their community-supported intervention; second, the challenge of developing and refining a methodological framework for evaluating …

Ground-Based Thermography Of Fluvial Systems At Low And High Discharge Reveals Potential Complex Thermal Heterogeneity Driven By Flow Variation And Bioroughness, M. Bayani Cardenas, Judson W. Harvey, Aaron I. Packman, Durelle T. Scott Jan 2008

Ground-Based Thermography Of Fluvial Systems At Low And High Discharge Reveals Potential Complex Thermal Heterogeneity Driven By Flow Variation And Bioroughness, M. Bayani Cardenas, Judson W. Harvey, Aaron I. Packman, Durelle T. Scott

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Temperature is a primary physical and biogeochemical variable in aquatic systems. Field-based measurement of temperature at discrete sampling points has revealed temperature variability in fluvial systems, but traditional techniques do not readily allow for synoptic sampling schemes that can address temperature-related questions with broad, yet detailed, coverage. We present results of thermal infrared imaging at different stream discharge (base flow and peak flood) conditions using a handheld IR camera. Remotely sensed temperatures compare well with those measured with a digital thermometer. The thermal images show that periphyton, wood, and sandbars induce significant thermal heterogeneity during low stages. Moreover, the images …

Porchscapes: Between Neighborhood Watershed And Home, Community Design Center

Community Design Center Project Reports

Located on the Ozark Plateau, this 43-unit housing development is a LEED-ND (Neighborhood Development) pilot project to be built for $60/sf plus $2.3 million in infrastructure costs. The studio objective is to design a demonstration project that combines affordability with best environmental practices as designated by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Porchscapes is a pioneering Low Impact Development (LID) project funded under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Section 319 Program for Nonpoint Source Pollution. LID manages stormwater runoff through ecological engineering technologies. A contiguous network of rainwater gardens, bioswales, infiltration trenches, sediment filter strips, green streets, and wet meadows …

A Review Of Black-Footed Ferret Reintroduction In Northwest Colorado, 2001-2006, Brian E. Holmes Jan 2008

A Review Of Black-Footed Ferret Reintroduction In Northwest Colorado, 2001-2006, Brian E. Holmes

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

BETWEEN THE FALL OF 2001 and the end of 2006, 217 black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) were released within the Wolf Creek Management Area (WCMA) in northwest Colorado in an effort to reestablish this species within its former range. Following 5 years of releases and monitoring, the minimum pre-breeding (spring) population within the WCMA in 2006 was 9 ferrets and the minimum population at the end of 2006 was 13 ferrets. While survival of released captive-raised ferrets was high for some colonies in the eastern portion of the WCMA, survival throughout much of the rest of the area was …

Agreements That Divide: Trips Vs. Cbd And Proposals For Mandatory Disclosure Of Source And Origin Of Genetic Resources In Patent Applications Comment, Jonathan Carr

Florida State University Journal of Transnational Law & Policy

In an attempt to unify the regulation of intellectual property, the TRIPS Agreement sets forth standards for intellectual property law. Recently, however, many countries have become divided on the issue of whether member countries should be required to disclose the source and origin of genetic resources used in patented technologies. Developing countries claim that enforcement of such a requirement would help remedy the global biopiracy problem. This article reviews and assesses the many proposals to amend the TRIPS Agreement as well as the responses from countries, such as the United States, opposing the proposals. Included is a brief discussion about …
