Aerobic And Anaerobic Respiration: Inquiry Compared To Traditional Pedagogical Approaches, Sarah A. Sanderson, Tanya Gupta, Kimberly A. Penning Jan 2008

Aerobic And Anaerobic Respiration: Inquiry Compared To Traditional Pedagogical Approaches, Sarah A. Sanderson, Tanya Gupta, Kimberly A. Penning

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article discusses and compares two approaches to teaching students about aerobic and anaerobic respiration. One approach was to have students take part in a common cookbook activity where a preset procedure is followed. In the second approach, students completed the same activity, th but in a more inquiry-oriented fashion. Each approach was implemented in two 10 grade classes. Students experiencing the inquiry approach were observed spending more time discussing the targeted concepts, and they performed better on the end-of-unit test. This article addresses National Science Education Standards A, C, and G and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, …

Weapons Of Mass Instruction: The Teacher’S Crucial Role In Promoting A Deep Understanding Of Conservation Of Mass, Matthew Moffitt, Joseph Miller Jan 2008

Weapons Of Mass Instruction: The Teacher’S Crucial Role In Promoting A Deep Understanding Of Conservation Of Mass, Matthew Moffitt, Joseph Miller

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Conservation of mass is a counter-intuitive idea that students struggle to fully comprehend (Stavy, 1990). This article presents a modified version of a conservation of mass demonstration. The original activity has much potential, but here we make clear the teacher's role that is necessary for promoting inquiry and deep mental engagement. We also discuss the use of several instructional “weapons” we have successfully used to enhance learning: questioning, wait time, listening, and nonverbal communication with students. We include numerous sample questions that we ask to encourage students to share their ideas, and help students come to the desired understanding. This …

Density With Intensity, Michelle State, Laurie Mcghee Jan 2008

Density With Intensity, Michelle State, Laurie Mcghee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article presents a guided-inquiry activity where students apply their emerging understanding of density. Students are presented with the question of how different solids and liquids will arrange themselves when placed together. However students are not allowed to physically put them together. With teacher guidance and scaffolding, students determine that they can solve the problem by calculating and comparing the densities of the various substances. This activity would best be used in grades 8-12 in the application phase of the learning cycle, or modified to become a summative assessment for a density unit. This article also discusses the crucial role …

Bacterial infections of the eye highlight a dilemma that is central to all immune-privileged sites. On the one hand, immune privilege limits inflammation to prevent bystander destruction of normal tissue and loss of vision. On the other hand, bacterial infections require a robust inflammatory response for rapid clearance of the pathogen. We demonstrate that the retina handles this dilemma, in part, by activation of a protective heat shock protein. During Staphylococcus aureus-induced endophthalmitis, the small heat shock protein αB-crystallin is upregulated in the retina and prevents apoptosis during immune clearance of the bacteria. In the absence of αB-crystallin, mice …

A.S. Byatt's "Morpho Eugenia": Prolegomena To Any Future Theory, Michael Lackey Jan 2008

A.S. Byatt's "Morpho Eugenia": Prolegomena To Any Future Theory, Michael Lackey

English Publications

The traditional view holds that love and knowledge are only possible if a person can transcend the human—love is that which overcomes biological urges like lust, while knowledge is that which gets beyond self-interested perception. In the nineteenth century, when theories about anthropomorphism came to dominate, the traditional views of love and knowledge were exposed as incoherent. In "Morpho Eugenia," A.S. Byatt brilliantly dramatizes how these intellectual developments impacted the lives of a wide range of nineteenth-century characters—some sunk into nihilistic despair, some became dogmatic scientists, some became tortured existentialists, and some tried to build a new and more reasonable …

Geochemical Processes Contributing To The Contamination Of Soil And Surface Waters In The Rio Conchos Basin, Mexico, Melida Gutierrez, Carlos Martinez-Pina, Jun Luo, Kevin L. Mickus Jan 2008

Geochemical Processes Contributing To The Contamination Of Soil And Surface Waters In The Rio Conchos Basin, Mexico, Melida Gutierrez, Carlos Martinez-Pina, Jun Luo, Kevin L. Mickus

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

A geochemical characterization of the middle Rio Conchos basin is presented based on two contaminants, salts (Ca and Na) and toxic metalloids (As and Sb). Their content in surface water and sediment samples was determined, and their spatial distribution was mapped to show the relationship to each other, to the geology and hydrology, and to other potential factors affecting their distribution (i.e., prevailing winds). Correlation analyses between salts, toxic metalloids, and associated elements, and their spatial distribution aided in determining their sources, which included mines, rock outcrops, urban centers, irrigation waste water, and agricultural runoff. The salinity of the Rio …

Exploitative Competition Between Invasive Herbivores Benefits A Native Host Plant, Evan L. Preisser, Joseph S. Elkinton Jan 2008

Exploitative Competition Between Invasive Herbivores Benefits A Native Host Plant, Evan L. Preisser, Joseph S. Elkinton

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Although biological invasions are of considerable concern to ecologists, relatively little attention has been paid to the potential for and consequences of indirect interactions between invasive species. Such interactions are generally thought to enhance invasives' spread and impact (i.e., the “invasional meltdown” hypothesis); however, exotic species might also act indirectly to slow the spread or blunt the impact of other invasives. On the east coast of the United States, the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae, HWA) and elongate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa, EHS) both feed on eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). Of the two insects, HWA is considered far more …

Biomedical Lance Ion Sensitive System, Charles D. Sturdevant

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

The fabrication of a pH sensor which can be used in practical applications in biological and niedical fields was designed and manufactured using a new lance style ion sensitive field effect transistor. The lance can be used to measure pH levels in micro biological cultures without disruption of the culture and can be a powerful tool in real time Invitro medical diagnostics tool.

The reference electrode can be placed onto the chip by depositing a noble metal contact in the field region. This is referred as a Pseudo Reference Electrode, PRE. By bringing the PRE design closer to the membrane, …

Pathways To Social And Emotional Wellbeing: Lessons From A 24-Year Longitudinal Study, Diana Smart

2008 – Touching the Future: Building Skills for Life and Work

Commencing in 1983, the longitudinal Australian Temperament Project (ATP) provides a valuable lens through which to view the pathways taken by Australian children from infancy to adulthood, and the factors associated with positive or problematic development. The study is now in its 25th year and has completed 14 data collection waves. This paper provides an overview of ATP findings on young people’s wellbeing at 23–24 years of age, their engagement in risk-taking behaviours such as alcohol use and risky driving, and the nature of parent–child relationships over adolescence and early adulthood.

"What Makes A Man To Wander?": The Searchers As A Western Odyssey, Kirsten Day Jan 2008

"What Makes A Man To Wander?": The Searchers As A Western Odyssey, Kirsten Day

Classics: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This paper looks at John Ford's 1956 film The Searchers as a literary, cultural, and ideological heir to Homer's Odyssey. Each work centers on a morally ambiguous protagonist on a mission to preserve the integrity of his household and his own honor, a quest made urgent by the sexual threat posed by a woman. While Homer's story explores issues of Greek identity and the ethnic anxieties generated by trade and colonization, Ford's film addresses racial and Cold War tensions prevalent in1950s America. Both works ultimately destabilize the categories of "us" and "them," encouraging audiences to reconsider this dichotomy.
