Canadian Contributions To Social Reproduction Feminism, Race And Embodied Labor, Sue Ferguson Jan 2008

Canadian Contributions To Social Reproduction Feminism, Race And Embodied Labor, Sue Ferguson

Journalism

Recent methodological advances in Canadian Social Reproduction Feminism foreground labor as a foundational concept of social theory and, as a result, address the structuralist bias critics of the paradigm have identified, while still grounding theory in a comprehensive analysis that accounts for specifically capitalist relations. Yet, to fully address issues of racialization, this broad and dynamic concept of labor needs to be extended and complexified. Along with accounting for the sex-gender dimensions of labor, we need also to attend to its socio-spatial aspects. In other words, it’s not just what we do to reproduce society, but where we do it …

Maverick Mothers And Mercy Flights: Canada’S Controversial Introduction To International Adoption, Tarah Brookfield Jan 2008

Maverick Mothers And Mercy Flights: Canada’S Controversial Introduction To International Adoption, Tarah Brookfield

Youth and Children's Studies

In the 1970s, two private adoption agencies faced state and public scrutiny over their ‘rescue’ of orphans from Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia. The organizations were run by four Canadian mothers who themselves adopted over fifty children and placed hundreds more with other Canadian families. Inspired by a sense of maternal internationalism, these ‘maverick mothers’ were convinced that removing the children from their war torn nations and bringing them to Canada was in each child’s best interest. According to professional social workers and diplomats, a strong commitment to maternalism and internationalism were not valid enough to trust the complicated operation of …

Pulsed Corona Discharge For Oxidation Of Gaseous Elemental Mercury, Kyung Bo Ko, Youngchul Byun, Moohyun Cho, Ian P. Hamilton, Dong Nam Shin, Dong Jun Koh, Kyoung Tae Kim Jan 2008

Pulsed Corona Discharge For Oxidation Of Gaseous Elemental Mercury, Kyung Bo Ko, Youngchul Byun, Moohyun Cho, Ian P. Hamilton, Dong Nam Shin, Dong Jun Koh, Kyoung Tae Kim

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Positive pulsed corona discharge has been applied for the oxidation of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0) from a simulated flue gas. The oxidation of Hg0 to HgO and HgCl2 can significantly enhance the mercury removal from flue gas. At a gas condition of O2 (10%), H2O (3%), and N2 (balance), Hg0 oxidation efficiency of 84% was achieved at an input energy density of 45 J/l. The presence of NO, however, hinders Hg0 oxidation due to the preferential reaction of NO with O and O3. On the contrary, SO2 …

Plant Succession On Gopher Mounds In Western Cascade Meadows: Consequences For Species Diversity And Heterogeneity, Chad C. Jones, Charles B. Halpern, Jessica Niederer Jan 2008

Plant Succession On Gopher Mounds In Western Cascade Meadows: Consequences For Species Diversity And Heterogeneity, Chad C. Jones, Charles B. Halpern, Jessica Niederer

Botany Faculty Publications

Pocket gophers have the potential to alter the dynamics of grasslands by creating mounds that bury existing vegetation and locally reset succession. Gopher mounds may provide safe sites for less competitive species, potentially increasing both species diversity and vegetation heterogeneity (spatial variation in species composition). We compared species composition, diversity and heterogeneity among gopher mounds of different ages in three montane meadows in the Cascade Range of Oregon. Cover of graminoids and forbs increased with mound age, as did species richness. Contrary to many studies, we found no evidence that mounds provided safe sites for early successional species, despite their …

The Mismatch Between Public Nuisance Law And Global Warming, David A. Dana Jan 2008

The Mismatch Between Public Nuisance Law And Global Warming, David A. Dana

Faculty Working Papers

The federal courts using the common law method of case-by-case adjudication may have institutional advantages over the more political branches, such as perhaps more freedom from interest group capture and more flexibility to tailor decisions to local conditions. Any such advantages, however, are more than offset by the disadvantages of relying on the courts in common resource management in general and in the management of the global atmospheric commons in particular. The courts are best able to serve a useful function resolving climate-related disputes once the political branches have acted by establishing a policy framework and working through the daunting …

Does Wind Affect Genetic Structure And Gene Flow In Two Phyllostomid Bat Species (Erophylla Sezekorni And Macrotus Waterhousii) In The Bahamas And Greater Antilles?, Robert Muscarella

Open Access Theses

Gene flow dictates a broad range of ecological and evolutionary processes. Understanding the factors mediating magnitude and direction of gene flow is crucial for interpreting patterns of genetic diversity and for answering many kinds of biological questions. Recent advances at the interface of population genetics and GIS technology have expanded our perspective of the geographic and physical features influencing gene flow and, in turn, shaping genetic structure of populations. I investigated the effect of surface-level trade winds on genetic structure and gene flow in two species of phyllostomid bats in the Bahamas and Greater Antilles: Erophylla sezekorni (the buffy flower …

Health Locus Of Control In Hiv: Healthy Individuals With Low Cd4 Cells Versus An Hiv-Positive Comparison Group, Rachel A. Kuhn Jan 2008

Health Locus Of Control In Hiv: Healthy Individuals With Low Cd4 Cells Versus An Hiv-Positive Comparison Group, Rachel A. Kuhn

Open Access Theses

Research examining multidimensional health locus of control (MHLOC) beliefs in HIV-positive individuals is limited. While studies in numerous other medical populations have shown relationships between MHLOC and markers of protected health status, no other studies, to our knowledge, have done so in HIV. The MHLOC has four subscales: Internal, Chance, Doctors, and Other People. Each subscale measures the degree of belief that one's health is controlled by one of these four constructs. This study compared the MHLOC beliefs of a rare group of healthy HIV-positive individuals with very low CD4 cell counts (below 50) who were not taking HAART (HLC …

The Importance Of Fast Skeletal Regulatory Light Chain In Muscle Contraction, Fatima Pestana De Freitas Jan 2008

The Importance Of Fast Skeletal Regulatory Light Chain In Muscle Contraction, Fatima Pestana De Freitas

Open Access Theses

The aim of this project was to produce and study a murine homozygous knock-in model containing a fast skeletal regulatory light chain (RLC) containing a Asp49toAla point mutation. The D49A mutation is in the functional calcium binding loop of RLC, which is believed to modulate muscle contraction in striated muscle. To introduce the mutation, a reversible knock-out/knock-in system was employed. The Cre/Lox-P strategy was used to conditionally knock-in the RLC D49A mutation. The generation of the knock-in mouse was attempted with two different breeding strategies consisting of two Cre mouse lines with differential expression patterns during development. The proposed animal …

Mechanisms Linking Early Behavioral Inhibition To Later Social Functioning: The Role Of Autobiographical Memory Biases, Laura Levin Jan 2008

Mechanisms Linking Early Behavioral Inhibition To Later Social Functioning: The Role Of Autobiographical Memory Biases, Laura Levin

Open Access Theses

This study examined the associations between behavioral inhibition in early childhood and patterns of social-emotional functioning in adolescence. As part of a larger longitudinal study on temperament and social development, adolescents who were recruited as infants completed two tasks to assess social-cognitive biases at follow-up: an information-processing task and an autobiographical memory task. The information-processing task assessed adolescents' interpretations of ambiguous situations. Next, adolescents completed an autobiographical memory task where they were exposed to both social and neutral-cued words, and recalled the first memory that came to mind. Memories were coded for specificity, affective tone, response latency, and emotional intensity. …

The Use Of Satellite-Based Ocean Color Measurements For Detecting The Florida Red Tide (Karenia Brevis), Gustavo De Araujo Carvalho Jan 2008

The Use Of Satellite-Based Ocean Color Measurements For Detecting The Florida Red Tide (Karenia Brevis), Gustavo De Araujo Carvalho

Open Access Theses

As human populations increase along coastal watersheds, the understanding and monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms (or red tides) is an increasingly important issue. A consistent method for accurately detecting red tides using satellite measurements would bring tremendous societal benefits to resource managers, the scientific community and to the public as well. In the West Florida Shelf, blooms of the toxic dinoflagelate Karenia brevis are responsible for massive red tides causing fish kills, massive die-offs of marine mammals, shellfish poisoning, and acute respiratory irritation in humans. In this work, for the first time a long-term dataset (2002~2006) the MODerate Resolution Imaging …

Goal-Striving And Affect In Bipolar I Disorder, Daniel Fulford Jan 2008

Goal-Striving And Affect In Bipolar I Disorder, Daniel Fulford

Open Access Theses

Although most research on bipolar I disorder has focused on biological models, recent investigation has elucidated the importance of psychosocial predictors of the course of illness. Theories of the Behavioral Activation System's role in affect have helped unify biological and environmental explanations of the disorder. Along these lines, researchers have proposed that goal striving and attainment predict manic symptoms. In the current study, experience-sampling methodology was used to assess the relationship between fluctuations in goal striving and affect among 12 persons with bipolar I disorder and 12 without a history of mood disorder (control group). Participants completed measures of goal …

Assessing Canopy Cover Requirements Of Storm's Stork (Ciconia Stormi) At Multiple Scales, Ian J. Berdie Jan 2008

Assessing Canopy Cover Requirements Of Storm's Stork (Ciconia Stormi) At Multiple Scales, Ian J. Berdie

Open Access Theses

Much conservation work focuses on individual species, partly because of the perception that wildlife species are effective symbols for raising funds and drawing awareness to environmental causes. However, for species-based studies to aid conservation efforts, the biological and ecological needs of species need to be addressed in a way that informs decisions and provides concrete recommendations for land managers. This thesis addresses the forest cover needs of Ciconia stormi, a rare and understudied bird species that inhabits the islands of Borneo and Sumatra and parts of peninsular Malaysia. Levels of forest canopy cover associated with areas inhabited by Ciconia stormi …

Francois Valentijn's Oud En Nieuw Oost Indien And The Dutch Frontispiece In The 17th And 18th Centuries, Maria S. Labarge

Open Access Theses

In this thesis I analyze the Dutch frontispiece to Francois Valentijn's 1726 book Oud en Nieuw Oost Indien and demonstrate that it is a significant artistic statement, original in its rich and imaginative iconography and emblematic program. I describe and explain the image and its iconographic program and emblematic structure. I compare the frontispiece to many other Dutch frontispieces and artworks that likewise feature the four continent allegories and other iconographic elements. I demonstrate the ways in which the frontispiece superbly and comprehensively summarizes and visualizes the text, which is the primary purpose of frontispieces. I also show how the …

Inhibition Of Xnos1 Translation By Structural Elementsin The Open Reading Frame, Stephen Nerlick Jan 2008

Inhibition Of Xnos1 Translation By Structural Elementsin The Open Reading Frame, Stephen Nerlick

Open Access Theses

The spatio-temporal regulation of translation is critical to the proper development of all organisms. The presence of Translational Control Elements (TCEs) in Un-Translated Regions (UTRs) is one feature common to all regulated eukaryotic mRNAs examined to date. These TCEs serve as binding sites for sequence specific proteins or small regulatory RNAs that recruit other accessory proteins that inhibit translation. Xnos1, a localized RNA in the germ plasm of Xenopus, is negatively regulated by an unknown mechanism. We used in vivo and in vitro translation assays, competition assays, and ribosome binding assays in order to determine the location of the Xnos1 …

From Self-Reports Of Personality To Perceptions Of The Transgressor?S: Perceived Agreeableness As A Predictor Of Post-Conflict Anxiety, Benjamin A. Tabak

Open Access Theses

Following interpersonal transgressions, victims? neuroticism and agreeableness have been previously associated with post-conflict anxiety and forgiveness. However, the perceptions that victims have about their transgressors? personalities have received little attention. The current investigation examined relationships between victims? neuroticism and agreeableness, their perceptions of their transgressors? agreeableness, and postconflict anxiety and affiliative motivation measured via plasma cortisol and oxytocin as well as self-reports of post-conflict anxiety and forgiveness in premenopausal women. Victims who perceived their transgressors as more agreeable reported lower post-conflict anxiety, experienced less plasma cortisol reactivity following a simulated speech to the transgressor, and more self-reported forgiveness. Exploratory analyses …

Analysis Of The Generation Of Auditory Steady-State Cortical Evoked Responses In Guinea Pigs, Jose Alejandro Briceno Jan 2008

Analysis Of The Generation Of Auditory Steady-State Cortical Evoked Responses In Guinea Pigs, Jose Alejandro Briceno

Open Access Theses

Recent research shows that human auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) develop a resonance at 40 Hz and the dramatic amplitude increase of the Pb component of the middle latency response (MLR) accounts for the high amplitude of the ASSR at 40 Hz. The first part of this study aimed to investigate the ASSR resonance characteristics as a function of rate in guinea pigs. A study of the grand average of the peak-to-peak and fundamental frequency amplitudes does indeed show a resonance around 40 Hz in guinea pigs. Unlike human ASSRs, this resonance is very broad (26-52 Hz) and flat. The centrally …

Investigating The Effects Of Anthelmintic Compounds At The Site Of Zinc Potentiation On Alpha4beta4 Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, Brett Roden Jan 2008

Investigating The Effects Of Anthelmintic Compounds At The Site Of Zinc Potentiation On Alpha4beta4 Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, Brett Roden

Open Access Theses

Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors can have their function modulated by zinc. Depending on concentration and subunit composition, zinc either inhibits or potentiates receptor function. The zinc ion potentiates the alpha4beta4 receptor at non-agonist binding interfaces or "pseudo sites." Zinc potentiation is reduced if certain residues are mutated or spatially interfered with. The residue contributing most to this potentiation reduction effect is histidine 162 on the alpha4 subunit. The anthelmintic compound levamisole potentiates acetylcholine response of certain neuronal nicotinic receptors. Levamisole and its functional analogues morantel, oxantel, and pyrantel all were found to potentiate alpha4beta4 receptors at low (µM) concentrations and …

Ecophysiology Of The Gray Snapper (Lutjanus Griseus): Salinity Effects On Abundance, Physiology And Behavior, Xaymara M. Serrano Jan 2008

Ecophysiology Of The Gray Snapper (Lutjanus Griseus): Salinity Effects On Abundance, Physiology And Behavior, Xaymara M. Serrano

Open Access Theses

Mangroves and seagrass beds serve as essential fish habitat for many economically- and ecologically-valuable species. Depending on their location, these shallow-water habitats are often characterized by substantial fluctuation in salinity levels, which can represent a source of osmoregulatory stress for associated organisms. In South Florida, one of the most important fish species that utilizes these habitats is the gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus). Although this species constitutes a significant portion of the region?s total recreational fishery harvest, the effects of salinity on its distribution, physiology and behavior remain poorly understood. The main goal of this thesis was then to investigate the …

Observing Eddy Variability Using Hf Radar In The Straits Of Florida, Andrew Brad Parks

Open Access Theses

A dual-station high frequency Wellen Radar (WERA), transmitting at 16.045 MHz, has been deployed along the Eastern Florida Shelf (EFS). From September 2004 to June 2005, a moored acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) acquired subsurface current measurements within the radar footprint along the shelf break at 86-m depth. The shallowest ADCP bin located at 14-m depth is used as a comparison for the WERA surface measurements. The RMS differences range from 0.1 to 0.3 m s super -1 between the surface and 14-m depth, with good agreement over most of the period. Regression analyses indicate slopes near unity in the …

Cellular Encapsulation Techniques: Camouflaging Islet Cells From The Immune And Inflammatory Responses Associated With Islet Transplantation, Kristina Kateri Finn Jan 2008

Cellular Encapsulation Techniques: Camouflaging Islet Cells From The Immune And Inflammatory Responses Associated With Islet Transplantation, Kristina Kateri Finn

Open Access Theses

Diabetes is a debilitating disease affecting millions of people worldwide. The transplantation of insulin-producing, pancreatic islet cells has been an extensively explored approach for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes. However, the need for a multi-donor source, the strong host immune responses, and a life-long immunosuppressive therapy regimen limits the widespread applicability of islet transplantation. Encapsulation of islet cells within a semi-permeable biomaterial as a means to mask transplanted cells from the host has been shown to be a viable option for the protection of islets upon transplantation. Recent advancements, incorporating additional knowledge of biomaterials, have revitalized the field of …

Sacrificing Motherhood On The Altar Of Political Correctness: Declaring A Legal Stranger To Be A Parent Over The Objections Of The Child's Biological Parent, Rena M. Lindevaldsen Jan 2008

Sacrificing Motherhood On The Altar Of Political Correctness: Declaring A Legal Stranger To Be A Parent Over The Objections Of The Child's Biological Parent, Rena M. Lindevaldsen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This Article examines the legal and policy implications that arise when two women involved in a same-sex relationship both claim motherhood status to a child who is biologically related to only one of them. These cases involve a biological mother who is artificially inseminated with donor sperm and gives birth while she is involved in a same-sex relationship. When the relationship ends, courts are asked to decide whether the former same-sex partner, who has no legal or biological relationship to the child, should be treated as a parent to the child for custody and visitation purposes. Since the United States …
