Resisting The Human Need For Enemies, Or What Would Harry Potter Do?, Mary E. Hess Jan 2008

Resisting The Human Need For Enemies, Or What Would Harry Potter Do?, Mary E. Hess

Faculty Publications

Most mass-mediated popular cultures surround us with enemies, offering up vivid depictions of a world seen as either “for us” or “against us.” Christian faith, on the other hand, draws us towards love even in the presence of hatred. A close look at the surprisingly countercultural world of Harry Potter provides some ways forward in walking the path of love.

The Hyaluronan Receptor For Endocytosis Mediates Hyaluronan-Dependent Signal Transduction Via Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinases, Svetlana V. Kyosseva, Ed Harris, Paul H. Weigel

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The hyaluronan (HA) receptor for endocytosis (HARE) mediates the endocytotic clearance of HA and other glycosaminoglycans from lymph and blood. Two isoforms of human HARE, 315- and 190-kDa, are highly expressed in sinusoidal endothelial cells of liver, lymph node, and spleen; HARE is also in specialized cells in the eye, heart, brain, and kidney. Here we determined whether HA binding to HARE initiates intracellular signaling in Flp-In 293 cells stably expressing either the 315- and 190-kDa HARE or the 190-kDa HARE alone. HARE was co-immunoprecipitated with extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 (ERK1/2), c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK), and p38 …

Strain-Dependent Relationship Between Growth Rate And Hyphal Branching In Neurospora Crassa, Michael K. Watters, Erik Lindamood, Margaret Meunich, Ryan Vetor Jan 2008

Strain-Dependent Relationship Between Growth Rate And Hyphal Branching In Neurospora Crassa, Michael K. Watters, Erik Lindamood, Margaret Meunich, Ryan Vetor

Biology Faculty Publications

In a previous study of branch frequency in Neurospora crassa focused on the wild-type, no relationship between growth rate and the frequency of hyphal branching was observed. In subsequent experiments, it became clear that while this independence is valid for the wild type and most mutant strains, it fails to hold for a subset of morphological mutants. This study distinguishes a subset of Neurospora morphological mutants for their morphological response to altered growth rate. Growth rates are altered using two different methods: reduced temperature and nutrient-deficient media. This should assure that the observed effect is not due to simple conditional …

Drought And Salinity Tolerance In Common Agrostis Species., Carol Auer, Collin Ahrens Jan 2008

Drought And Salinity Tolerance In Common Agrostis Species., Carol Auer, Collin Ahrens

Plant Science Presentations and Proceedings

Our research examines plant gene flow and the impacts from environmental release of genetically-modified plants. Plant gene flow is a natural process that occurs when pollen from one plant lands on the flower of another plant and produces a hybrid offspring. Gene flow can produce hybrid offspring with new traits that could change the ability of the plant to survive and spread. If hybrid offspring have some advantage in the environment, they could become invasive and/or affect other components of our ecosystems. In the near future, the federal government may approve the use of a genetically engineered herbicide-resistant (HR) Agrostis …

If Hybrids Go Wrong: Assessing Potential Environmental Risk From Release Of Herbicide-Resistant Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis)., Carol Auer, Collin Ahens

Plant Science Presentations and Proceedings

Genetically-modified (GM) plants need to be assessed for their benefits and risks before they are released into the environment. At present, GM grasses are being developed to improve sports turf and biofuels crops (e.g. switchgrass). How will genetic engineering of perennial grasses alter the distribution of these grasses in natural areas and managed landscapes? Can we use research data to predict future gene flow, weediness, or invasion? These are some of the important questions in ecological risk assessment of GM perennial grasses. We have initiated five research projects to characterize gene flow and potential ecological risk from herbicide-resistant (HR) creeping …

Global Supervenience On Microphysics, Crawford Elder Jan 2008

Global Supervenience On Microphysics, Crawford Elder

Philosophy Articles

Many philosophers would agree with the claim that the truths reported by the special sciences supervene on the ways the world is at the level of the fundamental particles of physics. At the least this supervenience claim denies independent variability for the truths of the special sciences—but many would add that the ways the world is, microphysically, generate all the special science truths. Call this “Global Supervenience on Microphysics”. What it is for a special science claim to be true, says GSM, just is for the world to be a certain way microphysically. But which way? The popular suggestion is …

A Watershed Analysis Of Pattee Pond: Implications For Water Quality And Land Use Management, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College

Colby College Watershed Study: Pattee Pond (2008, 1992)

The Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) investigated the impact of land use patterns on the water quality of Pattee Pond in Winslow, Maine, during the summer and fall of 2008. Physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of water quality were analyzed to evaluate the current health of the lake. Data collected were compared with previous studies conducted by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and CEAT to examine changes in water quality and land use over time. Trends in Pattee Pond water quality suggest an improvement since the 1970s. However, the lake is still experiencing algal blooms resulting from phosphorus …

A Dynamic Lagrangian, Field-Scale Model Of Dust Dispersion From Agriculture Tilling Operations, Thomas H. Meyer Jan 2008

A Dynamic Lagrangian, Field-Scale Model Of Dust Dispersion From Agriculture Tilling Operations, Thomas H. Meyer

Department of Natural Resources and the Environment Articles

Dust exposure in and near farm fields is of increasing concern for human health and may soon be facing new emissions regulations. Dust plumes of this nature have rarely been documented due to the unpredictable nature of the dust plumes and the difficulties of accurately sampling the plumes. This article presents a dynamic random‐walk model that simulates the field‐scale PM10 (particle diameter <10 >um) dust dispersion from an agriculture disking operation. The major improvements over traditional plume models are that it can simulate moving sources and plume meander. The major inputs are the friction velocity (u*), wind direction in the simulation …

Characterization Of Chemical And Biological Properties Of Purified Porphyromonas Gingivalis Free Dihydroceramides, Andrew Robert Chapokas Jan 2008

Characterization Of Chemical And Biological Properties Of Purified Porphyromonas Gingivalis Free Dihydroceramides, Andrew Robert Chapokas

SoDM Masters Theses

The aim of the present investigation is to purify, characterize, and determine the chemical and biological properties of Porphyromonas gingivalis free dihydroceramides (fDHC). Effects were tested by examination of human gingival fibroblast morphologic changes in addition to their synthesis of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2&#;) produced in vitro. Free dihydroceramides as well as phosphoglycerol dihydroceramide (PGDHC), and de-esterified phosphoglycerol dihydroceramide (PGDHC-C15:0) were obtained by total lipid extraction of P. gingivalis followed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Confirmation and structural analysis was obtained by electrospray mass spectrometry (ES-/+MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). A synthetic free dihydroceramide …
