Advanced Parallel Magnetic Resonance Imaging Methods With Applications To Mr Spectroscopic Imaging, Ricardo Otazo Feb 2008

Advanced Parallel Magnetic Resonance Imaging Methods With Applications To Mr Spectroscopic Imaging, Ricardo Otazo

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Parallel magnetic resonance imaging offers a framework for acceleration of conventional MRI encoding using an array of receiver coils with spatially-varying sensitivities. Novel encoding and reconstruction techniques for parallel MRI are investigated in this dissertation. The main goal is to improve the actual reconstruction methods and to develop new approaches for massively parallel MRI systems that take advantage of the higher information content provided by the large number of small receivers. A generalized forward model and inverse reconstruction with regularization for parallel MRI with arbitrary k-space sub-sampling is developed. Regularization methods using the singular value decomposition of the encoding matrix …

A Synaptic Basis For Auditory-Vocal Integration In The Songbird, Eric E. Bauer, Melissa J. Coleman, Todd F. Roberts, Arani Roy, Jonathan F. Prather, Richard Mooney Feb 2008

A Synaptic Basis For Auditory-Vocal Integration In The Songbird, Eric E. Bauer, Melissa J. Coleman, Todd F. Roberts, Arani Roy, Jonathan F. Prather, Richard Mooney

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Songbirds learn to sing by memorizing a tutor song that they then vocally mimic using auditory feedback. This developmental sequence suggests that brain areas that encode auditory memories communicate with brain areas for learned vocal control. In the songbird, the secondary auditory telencephalic region caudal mesopallium (CM) contains neurons that encode aspects of auditory experience. We investigated whether CM is an important source of auditory input to two sensorimotor structures implicated in singing, the telencephalic song nucleus interface (NIf) and HVC. We used reversible inactivation methods to show that activity in CM is necessary for much of the auditory-evoked activity …

The Anchor, Volume 121.14: February 6, 2008, Hope College

The Anchor: 2008

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Hydrodynamics Of Isotropic And Liquid Crystalline Active Polymer Solutions, Aphrodite Ahmadi, M. Cristina Marchetti, Tanniemola B. Liverpool

Physics - All Scholarship

We describe the large-scale collective behavior of solutions of polar biofilaments and both stationary and mobile crosslinkers. Both mobile and stationary crosslinkers induce filament alignment promoting either polar or nematic order. In addition, mobile crosslinkers, such as clusters of motor proteins, exchange forces and torques among the filaments and render the homogeneous states unstable via filament bundling. We start from a Smoluchowski equation for rigid filaments in solutions, where pairwise crosslink-mediated interactions among the filaments yield translational and rotational currents. The large-scale properties of the system are described in terms of continuum equations for filament and motor densities, polarization and …

Quenching Of Highly Vibrationally Excited Pyrimidine By Collisions With Co4, Jeremy A. Johnson, Andrew M. Duffin, Brian J. Hom, Karl E. Jackson, Eric T. Sevy

Faculty Publications

Relaxation of highly vibrationally excited pyrimidine (C4N2H4) by collisions with carbon dioxide has been investigated using diode laser transient absorption spectroscopy. Vibrationally hot pyrimidine (E'=40,635 cm^-1) was prepared by 248-nm excimer laser excitation, followed by rapid radiationless relaxation to the ground electronic state. The nascent rotational population distribution (J=58–80) of the 0000 ground state of CO2 resulting from collisions with hot pyrimidine was probed at short times following the excimer laser pulse. Doppler spectroscopy was used to measure the CO2 recoil velocity distribution for J=58–80 of the 0000 state. Rate constants and probabilities for collisions populating these CO2 rotational states …

Service As E-Ducare, Angela Possinger Feb 2008

Service As E-Ducare, Angela Possinger

Reason and Respect

The word “education” originated from the Latin word e-ducare, meaning “To bring out from within”. This ancient educational philosophy of “bringing out from within” carries through to modern times. One way modern colleges and universities apply this philosophy is by offering and implementing service opportunities, encouraging students to bring out their underlying skills to help others. Projects created by students’ own initiatives or with student involvement are more likely to be successful, because the service will bring out students’ underlying talents.

High Temperature Minimally Invasive Optical Sensing Modules, Nabeel Riza, Frank Perez Feb 2008

High Temperature Minimally Invasive Optical Sensing Modules, Nabeel Riza, Frank Perez

UCF Patents

A remote temperature sensing system includes a light source selectively producing light at two different wavelengths and a sensor device having an optical path length that varies as a function of temperature. The sensor receives light emitted by the light source and redirects the light along the optical path length. The system also includes a detector receiving redirected light from the sensor device and generating respective signals indicative of respective intensities of received redirected light corresponding to respective wavelengths of light emitted by the light source. The system also includes a processor processing the signals generated by the detector to …
