A Unified Association Analysis Approach For Family And Unrelated Samples Correcting For Stratification, Xiaofeng Zhu, Shengchao Li, Richard S. Cooper, Robert C. Elston Feb 2008

A Unified Association Analysis Approach For Family And Unrelated Samples Correcting For Stratification, Xiaofeng Zhu, Shengchao Li, Richard S. Cooper, Robert C. Elston

Faculty Publications

There are two common designs for association mapping of complex diseases: case-control and family-based designs. A case-control sample is more powerful to detect genetic effects than a family-based sample that contains the same numbers of affected and unaffected persons, although additional markers may be required to control for spurious association. When family and unrelated samples are available, statistical analyses are often performed in the family and unrelated samples separately, conditioning on parental information for the former, thus resulting in reduced power. In this report, we propose a unified approach that can incorporate both family and case-control samples and, provided the …

New Perspectives On Van Der Waals-London Interactions Of Materials. From Planar Interfaces To Carbon Nanotubes, Roger H. French Feb 2008

New Perspectives On Van Der Waals-London Interactions Of Materials. From Planar Interfaces To Carbon Nanotubes, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

The drive towards nanoscale assembly necessitates an accurate understanding of all the fundamental forces present in a given system to ensure the greatest chance of success. The van der Waals - London dispersion (vdW-Ld) interaction is the universal, long range, interaction that is present in all materials systems. However, scientists and engineers often either ignore or crudely approximate the vdW-Ld interactions because the calculations often appear impractical due to the 1) lack of the required full spectra optical properties and 2) lack of the proper geometrical formulation to give meaningful results. These two barriers are being actively eliminated by the …

Responsive In-Season Nitrogen Management For Cereals, J.F. Shanahan, N. R. Kitchen, W. R. Raun, James S. Schepers Feb 2008

Responsive In-Season Nitrogen Management For Cereals, J.F. Shanahan, N. R. Kitchen, W. R. Raun, James S. Schepers

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Current nitrogen (N) management strategies for worldwide cereal production systems are characterized by low N use efficiency (NUE), environmental contamination, and considerable ongoing debate regarding what can be done to improve N fertilizer management. Development of innovative strategies that improve NUE and minimize off-field losses is crucial to sustaining cereal-based farming. In this paper, we review the major managerial causes for low NUE, including (1) poor synchrony between fertilizer N and crop demand, (2) uniform field applications to spatially variable landscapes that commonly vary in crop N need, and (3) failure to account for temporally variable influences on crop N …

Adolescents With Two Nonresident Biological Parents: Living Arrangements, Parental Involvement, And Well-Being, Valarie King, Katherine C. Stamps, Daniel Hawkins Feb 2008

Adolescents With Two Nonresident Biological Parents: Living Arrangements, Parental Involvement, And Well-Being, Valarie King, Katherine C. Stamps, Daniel Hawkins

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

We know little about children who have two living nonresident biological parents. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study examines the diverse living arrangements of U.S. adolescents in this situation, the kinds of relationships they have with each of their nonresident parents, and the consequences of these arrangements for child well-being. Differences between these adolescents (N = 502) and those who have one nonresident biological parent (N = 4746) are also examined. Results point to certain groups of adolescents with two nonresident parents who are at particular risk of exhibiting higher levels of behavior problems …

Focal Waveform Of A Prolate-Spheroidal Impulse Radiating Antenna (Ira), Serhat Altunc Feb 2008

Focal Waveform Of A Prolate-Spheroidal Impulse Radiating Antenna (Ira), Serhat Altunc

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Impulse Radiating Antennas (IRAs) are designed to radiate very fast pulses in a narrow beam with low dispersion and high field amplitude. For this reason they have been used in a variety of applications. IRAs have been developed for the transient far-field region using paraboloidal reflectors. However, in this dissertation we focus on the near field region and develop the field waveform at the second focus of a prolate-spheroidal IRA. Recent research has shown that it is possible to kill certain skin cancers by the application of fast, high-amplitude electric-field pulses. This has been accomplished by the insertion of electrodes …
