Force Measurement And Evaluation For Surgical Cutting Applications: Development Of An Effective Characterisation Testbed, Dean Callaghan Mar 2008

Force Measurement And Evaluation For Surgical Cutting Applications: Development Of An Effective Characterisation Testbed, Dean Callaghan

Conference Papers

Sensorized instruments that cater for accurate measurement of the interaction forces (between biological tissue and instrument end-effector) during surgical procedures offer surgeons a greater sense of immersion during minimally invasive robotic surgery (MIRS). There is much ongoing research into force measurement/evaluation involving surgical graspers. However, comparatively little corresponding effort has been expended in the measurement and subsequent evaluation of forces between scissor blades and tissue. This paper presents the design and development of a force/strain measurement test apparatus, which will ultimately serve as an effective sensor characterisation and evaluation platform. Data acquired from the testing platform can be used to …

Prospective Faculty Developing Understanding Of Teaching And Learning Processes In Science, Jose I. Pareja Mar 2008

Prospective Faculty Developing Understanding Of Teaching And Learning Processes In Science, Jose I. Pareja

Dissertations

Historically, teaching has been considered a burden by many academics at institutions of higher education, particularly research scientists. Furthermore, university faculty and prospective faculty often have limited exposure to issues associated with effective teaching and learning. As a result, a series of ineffective teaching and learning strategies are pervasive in university classrooms. This exploratory case study focuses on four biology graduate teaching fellows (BGF) who participated in a National Science Foundation (NSF) GK-12 Program. Such programs were introduced by NSF to enhance the preparation of prospective faculty for their future professional responsibilities. In this particular program, BGF were paired with …

Data-Adaptive Selection Of The Truncation Level For Inverse-Probability-Of-Treatment-Weighted Estimators, Oliver Bembom, Mark J. Van Der Laan Mar 2008

Data-Adaptive Selection Of The Truncation Level For Inverse-Probability-Of-Treatment-Weighted Estimators, Oliver Bembom, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Inverse-Probability-of-Treatment-Weighted (IPTW) estimators are becoming a popular analysis tool in causal inference. It is well known that these estimators suffer from high variability if some treatment probabilities are estimated to be close to zero. While it is a common recommendation for such situations to truncate the weights in order to reduce the mean squared error of the estimator, the current literature gives little guidance on how to select an appropriate truncation level. In this article, we develop a closed-form estimate for the mean squared error of a truncated IPTW estimator that can be used to select this truncation level data-adaptively. …

Data-Adaptive Selection Of The Adjustment Set In Variable Importance Estimation, Oliver Bembom, Jeffrey W. Fessel, Robert W. Shafer, Mark J. Van Der Laan Mar 2008

Data-Adaptive Selection Of The Adjustment Set In Variable Importance Estimation, Oliver Bembom, Jeffrey W. Fessel, Robert W. Shafer, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

If estimates of the effect of a treatment variable on an outcome of interest are to be adjusted for a set of possible confounding factors, it is necessary to rely on the assumption of experimental treatment assignment (ETA) according to which each experimental unit has positive probability of being observed at any of the possible levels of the treatment variable regardless of the values the confounding factors may take on. Even if this assumption is only practically violated in the sense that certain values of the confounding factors cause some treatment levels to become not impossible, but at least highly …

Functional Imaging Of The Auditory Processing Applied To Speech Sounds, Roy D Patterson, Ingrid Johnsrude Mar 2008

Functional Imaging Of The Auditory Processing Applied To Speech Sounds, Roy D Patterson, Ingrid Johnsrude

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

In this paper, we describe domain-general auditory processes that we believe are prerequisite to the linguistic analysis of speech. We discuss biological evidence for these processes and how they might relate to processes that are specific to human speech and language. We begin with a brief review of (i) the anatomy of the auditory system and (ii) the essential properties of speech sounds. Section 4 describes the general auditory mechanisms that we believe are applied to all communication sounds, and how functional neuroimaging is being used to map the brain networks associated with domain-general auditory processing. Section 5 discusses recent …

Adding Value To Swine Manure Through Accurate Prediction Of Organic Nitrogen Availability, Charles S. Wortman, Charles Shapiro, Aaron Nygren Mar 2008

Adding Value To Swine Manure Through Accurate Prediction Of Organic Nitrogen Availability, Charles S. Wortman, Charles Shapiro, Aaron Nygren

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Animal manure contains organic and inorganic nitrogen. The inorganic N, which is mostly ammonium-N but nitrate-N can be significant in composted manure, is typically considered to be 100% plant available if there are not significant losses, especially due to volatilization of ammonia-N. The availability of organic N, which is mostly from undigested and partially digested plant material needs to be mineralized to become plant available, is less predictable. Field research was conducted in eastern Nebraska to improve the basis for estimating organic N availability from injected or incorporated swine manure and from surface applied composted and stockpiled FM. The factors …

Peptidomimetic Inhibitors Of Stat Activity And Uses Thereof, James Turkson, Richard Jove, Said M. Sebti, Andrew D. Hamilton

USF Patents

The subject invention concerns compositions and methods for blocking cancer cell growth or proliferation and/or inducing cancer cell death. Compositions of the present invention are peptidomimetics that inhibit STAT function. Peptidomimetics of the invention include compounds of the formula RY*L (where Y* represents phosphotyrosine), with the R group at the Y-1 position. Peptidomimetics of the invention disrupt Stat3 activation and function. Peptidomimetics of the invention significantly inhibit tumor cell growth and induce tumor cell death.
