Fantasies Of Gender And The Witch In Feminist Theory And Literature, Justyna Sempruch Mar 2008

Fantasies Of Gender And The Witch In Feminist Theory And Literature, Justyna Sempruch

Comparative Cultural Studies

In Fantasies of Gender and the Witch in Feminist Theory and Literature, Justyna Sempruch analyzes contemporary representations of the “witch” as a locus for the cultural negotiation of genders. Sempruch revisits some of the most prominent traits in past and current perceptions in feminist scholarship of exclusion and difference. She examines a selection of twentieth-century US American, Canadian, and European narratives to reveal the continued political relevance of metaphors sustained in the archetype of the “witch” widely thought to belong to pop-cultural or folkloristic formulations of the past. Through a critical rereading of the feminist texts engaging with these …

Chlorella Viruses Evoke A Rapid Release Of K+ From Host Cells During The Early Phase Of Infection, Monika Neupartl, Christine Meyer, Isabell Woll, Florian Frohns, Ming Kang, James L. Van Etten, Detlef Kramer, Brigitte Hertel, Anna Moroni, Gerhard Thiel

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Infection of Chlorella NC64A cells by PBCV-1 produces a rapid depolarization of the host probably by incorporation of a viral-encoded K+ channel (Kcv) into the host membrane. To examine the effect of an elevated conductance, we monitored the virus-stimulated efflux of K+ from the Chlorella cells. The results indicate that all 8 Chlorella viruses tested evoked a host specific K+ efflux with a concomitant decrease in the intracellular K+. This K+ efflux is partially reduced by blockers of the Kcv channel. Qualitatively these results support the hypothesis that depolarization and K+ efflux are …

Estimation On Internal Wave Reflection In A Two-Layer Fluid System By Cumulative Logistic Regression Model, Hsien-Chueh Peter Yang, Chen-Yuan Chen, Cheng-Wu Chen, Tsung-Hao Chen Mar 2008

Estimation On Internal Wave Reflection In A Two-Layer Fluid System By Cumulative Logistic Regression Model, Hsien-Chueh Peter Yang, Chen-Yuan Chen, Cheng-Wu Chen, Tsung-Hao Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Internal solitary wave propagation over a submarine ridge causes energy dispersion. Under this condition, the hydrodynamic interaction between the wave and ridge affects the oceanographic and marine environment. This study investigates how ridge height and potential energy affect wave-ridge interaction using a cumulative regression model. Three probability functions 1 pˆ , 2 pˆ and 3 pˆ , are utilized to investigate weighted influence of elements on wave reflection. Deviance and Pearson tests are employed to assess the goodness-of-fit of the proposed model and to improve the overdispersion problem. The cumulative logistic regression model demonstrates that bathymetry induced internal wave reflection …

Completing The Recipe For Children's Health: New Variations On Key Ingredients: A Report From The Workshop On June 28, 2007, Jennifer Ryan

National Health Policy Forum

This paper offers a broad overview of the issues surrounding the social and environmental determinants of children’s health. These issues were explored during a discussion convened by the National Health Policy Forum on June 28, 2007, among a group of individuals concerned about the influences beyond medical care on the health of children. The paper considers the policy and financing tensions that exist across programs and populations that make addressing the full range of influences challenging. It also highlights some of the community-based initiatives that have been successful in providing services to children and families, as described during the workshop. …

World Is Lab To Gsu Biology Prof, Office Of Public Affairs

Press Releases

While education certainly takes place in the classroom, it is often the lessons learned outside the university walls that make the greatest impact.

“Off campus experiences offer a breath and depth of learning far beyond basic classroom biology. Students gain insight and exposure to how people live and how they affect their environment,” says Dr. John Yunger, biology professor at Governor State University.

And Yunger should know. He regularly takes classrooms of students to Belize to learn from the rain forest and will soon accompany a student to conduct research in China.

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This paper describes work directed toward creating community-supported positive youth development interventions that draw on a developmental intervention science outreach research approach. With respect to developmental interventions, this approach focuses on creating evidence-based longitudinal change intervention strategies for promoting long-term developmental change. The paper describes three broad challenges (theoretical, methodological, and meta-theoretical) that the authors faced in their efforts to develop and implement community-supported intervention programs built on this approach. The authors describe first the theoretical challenges they addressed in developing the conceptual framework for their community-supported intervention; second, the challenge of developing and refining a methodological framework for evaluating …

Biomimetic Micro Air Vehicle Testing Development And Small Scale Flapping-Wing Analysis, Craig E. Svanberg Mar 2008

Biomimetic Micro Air Vehicle Testing Development And Small Scale Flapping-Wing Analysis, Craig E. Svanberg

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop testing methods capable of analyzing the performance of a miniature flapping-wing mechanism that can later be adapted to a biomimetic micro air vehicle (MAV). Three small scale flapping mechanisms capable of single plane flapping, flapping with active pitch control, and flapping/pitch with out-of-plane movement were designed using SolidWorks. The flapping-only model was fabricated on an Objet Eden 500V 3-dimensional printer. The flapping mechanism was mounted on an aluminum plate supported by air bearings, and thrust was measured for a variety of conditions. The testing was conducted using wings composed of carbon fiber …

Transcendental Exchange: Alchemical Discourse In Romantic Philosophy And Literature, Elizabeth Olsen Brocious Mar 2008

Transcendental Exchange: Alchemical Discourse In Romantic Philosophy And Literature, Elizabeth Olsen Brocious

Theses and Dissertations

Alchemical imagery and ideology is present in many Romantic works of literature, but it has largely been overlooked by literary historians in their contextualization of the time period. The same can be said for mysticism in general, of which alchemy is a subset. This project accounts for alchemy in the works of transcendental philosophers and writers as it contributes to some of the most important conversations of the Romantic time period, particularly the reaction against empirical philosophy and the articulation of creative processes. The transcendental conversation is a transnational one, encompassing Germany, Britain, and America, with its use of alchemy …

Functional Remodeling Of The Cardiac Glycome Throughout The Developing Myocardium, Marty L. Montpetit Mar 2008

Functional Remodeling Of The Cardiac Glycome Throughout The Developing Myocardium, Marty L. Montpetit

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cell surfaces are replete with complex, biologically important glycans responsible for multiple cellular functions including cell adhesion and cellular communication. Proper protein glycosylation is essential for normal development and often pathologies are marked by altered glycosylation. Here, data showed that the auxillary subunit, ß1, modified voltage-gated Na+ channel (Nav) gating in an isoform-specific, sialic acid dependent, and saturating manner. The regulated activity of the hundreds of glycogenes (glycosylation-associated genes) is responsible for protein glycosylation; this could result in a glycome of thousands of glycan structures. Microarray analyses indicated that glycogene expression was highly regulated throughout …

Analyzing Carbohydrate-Based Regenerative Fuel Cells As A Power Source For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Olek Wojnar Mar 2008

Analyzing Carbohydrate-Based Regenerative Fuel Cells As A Power Source For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Olek Wojnar

Theses and Dissertations

Based on current capabilities, we examine the feasibility of creating a carbohydrate-based regenerative fuel cell (CRFC) as the primary power source for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for long endurance missions where station keeping is required. A CRFC power system is based on a closed-loop construct where carbohydrates are generated from zooxanthellae, algae that create excess carbohydrates during photosynthesis. The carbohydrates are then fed to a carbohydrate fuel cell where electric power is generated for the UAV’s propulsion, flight control, payload, and accessory systems. The waste products from the fuel cell are used by the zooxanthellae to create more carbohydrates, therefore …

A Bioenergetic Model For Zebrafish Danio Rerio (Hamilton), Christopher J. Chizinski, B. Sharma, K. L. Pope, Kevin L. Pope, R. Patinos

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A bioenergetics model was developed from observed consumption, respiration and growth rates for zebrafish Danio rerio across a range (18–32° C) of water temperatures, and evaluated with a 50 day laboratory trial at 28° C. No significant bias in variable estimates was found during the validation trial; namely, predicted zebrafish mass generally agreed with observed mass.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Biotin Carboxylase, Sten O.Nilsson Lili, Jiali Gao, Grover L. Waldrop Mar 2008

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Biotin Carboxylase, Sten O.Nilsson Lili, Jiali Gao, Grover L. Waldrop

Faculty Publications

Biotin carboxylase catalyzes the ATP-dependent carboxylation of biotin and is one component of the multienzyme complex acetyl-CoA carboxylase that catalyzes the first committed step in fatty acid synthesis in all organisms. Biotin carboxylase from Escherichia coli, whose crystal structures with and without ATP bound have been determined, has served as a model system for this component of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase complex. The two crystal structures revealed a large conformational change of one domain relative to the other domains when ATP is bound. Unfortunately, the crystal structure with ATP bound was obtained with an inactive site-directed mutant of the enzyme. As …
