Analysis And Application Of Perfectly Matched Layer Absorbing Boundary Conditions For Computational Aeroacoustics, Sarah Anne Parrish Apr 2008

Analysis And Application Of Perfectly Matched Layer Absorbing Boundary Conditions For Computational Aeroacoustics, Sarah Anne Parrish

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) was originally proposed by Berenger as an absorbing boundary condition for Maxwell's equations in 1994 and is still used extensively in the field of electromagnetics. The idea was extended to Computational Aeroacoustics in 1996, when Hu applied the method to Euler's equations. Since that time much of the work done on PML in the field of acoustics has been specific to the case where mean flow is perpendicular to a boundary, with an emphasis on Cartesian coordinates. The goal of this work is to further extend the PML methodology in a two-fold manner: First, to …

Modeling The Seasonal Sea Ice Cycle In The Ross Sea, Antarctica, Yusuf Sinan Hûsrevoğlu Apr 2008

Modeling The Seasonal Sea Ice Cycle In The Ross Sea, Antarctica, Yusuf Sinan Hûsrevoğlu

OES Theses and Dissertations

A mesoscale resolution (5 km) regional ocean model (ROMS), coupled thermodynamically/dynamically to a sea ice model (CICE) and thermodynamically to an ice shelf is used to investigate Ross Sea seasonal sea ice cycle, polynya dynamics, distribution and transformations of continental shelf water masses, and bottom water formation. Daily atmospheric forcing is from the ECMWF ERA-40 dataset, and for a separate simulation, wind forcing for Terra Nova Bay is substituted from daily automatic weather station (AWS) data. Simulated Ross Sea sea ice concentration reproduces the winter lead opening events observed in the SSM/I signal; however, it underestimates open water area (rmsd …

Numerical Simulations Of A Nonlinear Transmission Line, Stuart Rogers Apr 2008

Numerical Simulations Of A Nonlinear Transmission Line, Stuart Rogers

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates wave propagation along a nonlinear transmission line having a voltage-dependent capacitance. The telegrapher's equations that model wave propagation along such a transmission line are derived and shown to represent a nonlinear hyperbolic system of balance laws. The Lax-Friedrichs, Lax-Wendroff, and hybrid numerical schemes for obtaining approximate solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic systems of balance laws are presented, analyzed, and applied to the nonlinear telegrapher's equations. The Lax-Wendroff and hybrid schemes are invoked to numerically simulate wave propagation along a nonlinear transmission line. Simulations obtained via the hybrid scheme are used to briefly study the potential application of a …

The Effect Of Ethanol And Pfiesteria Toxins On Anxiety And Spontaneous Motor Activity In Rats, Juan Carlos Constantine

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Pfiesteria is associated with major fish kills in the Chesapeake Bay and the Albermarle-Pamlico sound and has also been associated with cognitive deficits in humans. This study consisted of two separate experiments. The first experiment was a near-replication of a previous study on anxiety in the elevated plus maze. The second study investigated the effect of ethanol on SMA in rats exposed to Pfiesteria toxins. Thirty-two rats were injected with either nontoxic water or toxic water taken from an aquarium containing active Pfiesteria shumwayae cultures and tested in the elevated plus maze. In the second experiment, ethanol (0, 600, 1200 …

The Regulation Of Endothelial And Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression In The Preglomerular Vessels By The Increase In Intracellular Calcium Concentration, Stephanie Thomas Montgomery Apr 2008

The Regulation Of Endothelial And Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression In The Preglomerular Vessels By The Increase In Intracellular Calcium Concentration, Stephanie Thomas Montgomery

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

This purpose of this study was to examine the regulation of endothelial and neuronal nitric oxide synthase expression in the preglomerular vessels of mature and immature porcine kidneys by the increase in intracellular calcium concentration. Angiotensin II can increase intracellular calcium concentrations in two ways; either through the mobilization of intracellular calcium stores or through the influx of calcium from the extracellular fluid through calcium channels. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a calcium control, a calcium-free control, L- and T-type voltage-gated calcium channel blockers, an internal calcium store release agent, KCI, and EDTA on …

Influences Of The Loggerhead Sponge (Spheciospongia Vesparium) And The Vase Sponge (Ircinia Campana) On Nearshore Hard-Bottom Community Development In The Florida Keys, Scott Donahue Apr 2008

Influences Of The Loggerhead Sponge (Spheciospongia Vesparium) And The Vase Sponge (Ircinia Campana) On Nearshore Hard-Bottom Community Development In The Florida Keys, Scott Donahue

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Sponges, octocorals, and stony corals are the dominant sessile fauna within shallow, hard-bottom communities in the Florida Keys, FL (USA). The sponge component of these communities is not well studied and has been cyclically decimated from as early as 1844, most recently in south-central Florida Bay in 1991 and 1992, in apparent association with phytoplankton blooms. The purpose of this research was to examine ways in which sponges may contribute to the maintenance of hard-bottom communities. Specifically, I investigated: 1) the effect of sponges and physical structures on local sea floor scouring and thus the potential for maintenance of hard-bottom; …

Correlates Of Marital Success A Homogamy Model, Sarah A. Raper Apr 2008

Correlates Of Marital Success A Homogamy Model, Sarah A. Raper

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This paper examines the relationship between five demographic homogamy variables and marital success. Throughout this paper, several questions were examined that seek to give a better understanding of the factors that impact the stability and quality of American marriages. Is homogamy an important issue in modern society, or have cultural advancements in American society made homogamy irrelevant? Do both ascribed and achieved characteristics still impact marital success? Data from wave one of the National Survey of Families and Households was used for the analysis. First, correlations between the heterogamy variables and marital success were evaluated. Next, regression models were used …

Treg Depletion Inhibits Efficacy Of Cancer Immunotherapy: Implications For Clinical Trials., James Curtin, Marianela Candolfi, Tamer Fakhouri, Chunyan Liu, Anderson Alden, Matthew Edwards, Pedro Lowenstein, Maria Castro

Articles

BACKGROUND: Regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg) infiltrate human glioblastoma (GBM); are involved in tumor progression and correlate with tumor grade. Transient elimination of Tregs using CD25 depleting antibodies (PC61) has been found to mediate GBM regression in preclinical models of brain tumors. Clinical trials that combine Treg depletion with tumor vaccination are underway to determine whether transient Treg depletion can enhance anti-tumor immune responses and improve long term survival in cancer patients. FINDINGS: Using a syngeneic intracrabial glioblastoma (GBM) mouse model we show that systemic depletion of Tregs 15 days after tumor implantation using PC61 resulted in a decrease in Tregs …

Metal Coordination And Cis-Trans Isomerisation Of Benzene Dihydrodiols, Catriona O'Meara Apr 2008

Metal Coordination And Cis-Trans Isomerisation Of Benzene Dihydrodiols, Catriona O'Meara

Masters

Abstract In this thesis, a viable route for conversion of arene cis-dihydrodiols to their trans isomers was investigated. The cis-dihydrodiols can be produced by large scale fermentation but their trans analogues are not accessible using this approach. The trans dihydrodiols are potentially important chiral building blocks in synthetic chemistry particularly because they have the advantage that they are more stable than the cis-isomers. The principal aim of this work was to carry out parallel studies to inform the development of the synthetic pathway under study by; (a) synthesis of organometallic and organic intermediates and products and, (b) investigation of the …

Excess Adenosine In Murine Penile Erectile Tissues Contributes To Priapism Via A2b Adenosine Receptor Signaling, Tiejuan Mi, Shahrzad Abbasi, Hong Zhang, Karen Uray, Janci L Chunn, Ling Wei Xia, Jose G Molina, Norman W Weisbrodt, Rodney E Kellems, Michael R Blackburn, Yang Xia

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Priapism, abnormally prolonged penile erection in the absence of sexual excitation, is associated with ischemia-mediated erectile tissue damage and subsequent erectile dysfunction. It is common among males with sickle cell disease (SCD), and SCD transgenic mice are an accepted model of the disorder. Current strategies to manage priapism suffer from a poor fundamental understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the disorder. Here we report that mice lacking adenosine deaminase (ADA), an enzyme necessary for the breakdown of adenosine, displayed unexpected priapic activity. ADA enzyme therapy successfully corrected the priapic activity both in vivo and in vitro, suggesting that it was …

Why Are Incubation Periods Longer In The Tropics? A Common-Garden Experiment With House Wrens Reveals It Is All In The Egg, Given Harper, W. Robinson, John Styrsky, Brian Payne, Charles Thompson Apr 2008

Why Are Incubation Periods Longer In The Tropics? A Common-Garden Experiment With House Wrens Reveals It Is All In The Egg, Given Harper, W. Robinson, John Styrsky, Brian Payne, Charles Thompson

Scholarship

Incubation periods of Neotropical birds are often longer than those of related species at temperate latitudes. We conducted a common-garden experiment to test the hypothesis that longer tropical incubation periods result from longer embryo development times rather than from different patterns of parental incubation behavior. House wrens, one of few species whose geographic range includes tropical equatorial and temperate high latitudes, have incubation periods averaging 1.2 days longer at tropical latitudes. We incubated eggs of house wrens in Illinois and Panama under identical conditions in mechanical incubators. Even after factoring out differences in egg size, tropical house wrens still required …

Metallopeptides As Model Systems For The Study Of Cu(Ii)-Dependent Oxidation Chemistry, William Maung Tay Apr 2008

Metallopeptides As Model Systems For The Study Of Cu(Ii)-Dependent Oxidation Chemistry, William Maung Tay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Copper is one of the essential metal ions for aerobic organisms. Two well known functions of copper in the biological systems are electron transfer and molecular oxygen interaction. Thus, this metal can be found in haemocyanin, an oxygen carrier protein, and superoxide dismutase, an enzyme that involves in electron transfer. In addition, having a positive redox potential allows copper to be involved in redox chemistry. It is the redox properties of copper that are responsible for many important biochemical processes. Although the copper-containing oxidases have been well studied over the years, certain mechanistic details such as reaction intermediates remain to …

Gender Differences In The Response To Competition, Joseph Price Apr 2008

Gender Differences In The Response To Competition, Joseph Price

Faculty Publications

To investigate whether men and women respond differently to competition and whether this response depends on the gender mix of the group, the author examines outcomes of the Mellon Foundation's Graduate Education Initiative, a competitive fellowship program instituted in 1991 that was aimed at increasing graduation rates and decreasing time to degree. Men's performance, as measured by time to candidacy, increased 10% in response to the program, with the largest gains for men in departments with the highest proportions offemale students. Women did not increase performance, on average, but the response of women did differ greatly depending on the gender …

Comp-Ref: A Technique To Guide The Delegation Of Responsibilities To Components In Software Systems, Subhajit Datta, Robert Van Engelen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In software systems, components collaborate to collectively fulfill requirements. A key concern of software design is the delegation of responsibilities to components such that user needs are most expediently met. This paper presents the COMP-REF technique based on a set of metrics and Linear Programming (LP) to guide the allocation of responsibilities of a system’s components. We define the metrics Aptitude Index, Requirement Set, and Concordance Index to extract some design characteristics and use these metrics in an optimization algorithm. Results from experimental validation of the COMP-REF technique across a range of software systems are reported. We also …

Modeling The Cellular Level Of Natural Sensing With The Functional Basis For The Design Of Biomimetic Sensor Technology, Jacquelyn K. Stroble, Robert B. Stone, Daniel A. Mcadams, L. H. Shu, Steve Eugene Watkins Apr 2008

Modeling The Cellular Level Of Natural Sensing With The Functional Basis For The Design Of Biomimetic Sensor Technology, Jacquelyn K. Stroble, Robert B. Stone, Daniel A. Mcadams, L. H. Shu, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

After surveying biology for natural sensing solutions six main types of extraneous sensing were identified across the biological kingdoms. Natural sensing happens at the cellular level with receptor cells that respond to photo, chemo, eletro, mechano, thermo and magnetoreceptor-type stimuli. At the highest level, all natural sensing systems have the same reaction sequence to stimuli: perception, transduction, and response. This research is exploring methods for knowledge transfer between the biological and engineering domains. With the use of the Functional Basis, a well-defined modeling language, the ingenuity of natural sensing can be captured through functional models and crossed over into the …

Part I: Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of Trocheliophorolide A. Part Ii: Studies On The Development Of A Palladium-Catalyzed Carbonylative Cross-Coupling Towards The Synthesis Of Alkenyl Alkynyl Ketones, William T. Spencer Apr 2008

Spencer

Theses

In Part I, efforts toward the total synthesis of a novel antibacterial γ-lactone, Trocheliophorolide A, are described. The natural product was isolated from Red Sea soft corals S. trocheliophorum and L. arboreum. Biological assays show that this compound exhibits significant growth inhibition of bacterial cell lines S. aureus and B. subtilis. The structure consists of an (S)-β-angelica lactone ring connected to an ynediene side chain. Our strategy employs synthesis of the lactone ring as a stannylfuranone, which will be Stille coupled with vinylidene dibromide to form an alkenyl bromide. This alkenyl bromide will be cross-coupled with an enynyl metal species …

New Findings At Andrahomana Cave, Southeastern Madagascar, David A. Burney, Natalie Vasey, Laurie R. Godfrey, William L. Jungers, Ramilisonina, M. F. Ramarolahy, L. L. Raharivony

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

A remote eolianite cave and sinkhole complex on the southeast coast of Madagascar has played a major role in the history of paleontology in Madagascar. Andrahomana Cave has yielded a rich fossil record of the extinct megafauna. Expeditions in 2000 and 2003 produced a wealth of new material and provided the first systematic information concerning the genesis, stratigraphy, and taphonomy of the site. Recovered bones of one of the most poorly understood extinct large lemurs, Hadropithecus stenognathus, include many skeletal elements previously unknown. Radiocarbon dates show that the site has sampled this disappeared fauna in the midto- late Holocene, but …

The Mads-Domain Transcriptional Regulator Agamous-Like15 Promotes Somatic Embryo Development In Arabidopsis And Soybean, Dhiraj Thakare, Weining Tang, Kristine Hill, Sharyn E. Perry Apr 2008

The Mads-Domain Transcriptional Regulator Agamous-Like15 Promotes Somatic Embryo Development In Arabidopsis And Soybean, Dhiraj Thakare, Weining Tang, Kristine Hill, Sharyn E. Perry

Dartmouth Scholarship

The MADS-domain transcriptional regulator AGAMOUS-LIKE15 (AGL15) has been reported to enhance somatic embryo development when constitutively expressed. Here we report that loss-of-function mutants of AGL15, alone or when combined with a loss-of-function mutant of a closely related family member, AGL18, show decreased ability to produce somatic embryos. If constitutive expression of orthologs of AGL15 is able to enhance somatic embryo development in other species, thereby facilitating recovery of transgenic plants, then AGL15 may provide a valuable tool for crop improvement. To test this idea in soybean (Glycine max), a full-length cDNA encoding a putative ortholog of AGL15 was isolated from …

Drinking-Water Arsenic Exposure Modulates Gene Expression In Human Lymphocytes From A U.S. Population, Angeline S. Andrew, David A. Jewell, Rebecca A. Mason, Michael L. Whitfield, Jason H. Moore, Margaret R. Karagas Apr 2008

Drinking-Water Arsenic Exposure Modulates Gene Expression In Human Lymphocytes From A U.S. Population, Angeline S. Andrew, David A. Jewell, Rebecca A. Mason, Michael L. Whitfield, Jason H. Moore, Margaret R. Karagas

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Arsenic exposure impairs development and can lead to cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The mechanism underlying these effects remains unknown. Primarily because of geologic sources of contamination, drinking-water arsenic levels are above the current recommended maximum contaminant level of 10 μg/L in the northeastern, western, and north central regions of the United States.

Objectives:

We investigated the effects of arsenic exposure, defined by internal biomarkers at levels relevant to the United States and similarly exposed populations, on gene expression.

Methods:

We conducted separate Affymetrix microarray-based genomewide analyses of expression patterns. Peripheral blood lymphocyte samples from 21 controls interviewed (1999–2002) …

Cob Building: Movements And Moments Of Survival, Jeanine Marie Minge Apr 2008

Cob Building: Movements And Moments Of Survival, Jeanine Marie Minge

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cob, as an arts-based research process, creates movements and moments of survival. Survival is an ideological construction and an actual, local practice. Survival is also about desiring and fulfilling arts-based desires to work with the land through academic and material scavenging. Cob creates strategies for surviving, for working with our respective environments wisely. Cob building teaches people how to negotiate the natural economy and their relationships to labor and each other through an artistic and intimate practice. From a feminist poststructural lens, survival happens on the local level, between and with people. Cob building creates knowledge through creative, kinesthetic, and …
