Protecting Shoreland And Riparian Buffers Workshop (2007), Jennifer Hunter

PREP Reports & Publications

The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) organized and implemented a workshop on protecting shoreland and riparian buffers. A number of other organizations, including three regional planning commissions, NH Fish and Game Department, NH Department of Environmental Services, Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and UNH Cooperative Extension, were involved in the planning and execution of the workshop. The workshop was designed to provide information and tools to encourage greater municipal regulatory protections for buffers. The workshop was held three times in October and November 2007 and attended by 75 people, primarily planning board and conservation commission members.

Protecting Paradise: A Cross-National Analysis Of Biome-Protection Policies, Candace Archer, Shannon Orr Apr 2008

Protecting Paradise: A Cross-National Analysis Of Biome-Protection Policies, Candace Archer, Shannon Orr

Political Science Faculty Publications

Land protection policies such as creating and preserving national parks have been promoted to counter global threats to the environment and to conserve biodiversity. We know little, however, about the country characteristics that might be good predictors of whether states will choose to protect land or not. What factors within a state need to be the focus of global attention or need to be encouraged to promote land-protection policies? Using the global standard of 10% ecoregion protection, we test four categories of predictors–biodiversity, environmental threats, politics (such as treaty participation and NGO activity), and economics (such as GDP and trade …

The Complexity Of Re-Evaluating Antiretroviral Therapy Eligibility Guidelines For Hiv/Aids Patients In Uganda, Jennifer Klein Apr 2008

The Complexity Of Re-Evaluating Antiretroviral Therapy Eligibility Guidelines For Hiv/Aids Patients In Uganda, Jennifer Klein

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

When I first learned that the eligibility criteria for Antiretroviral Drugs (ARVs) in Uganda is to have a CD4 cell count of 200 or below, I was shocked. Actually, I think my exact response was, “So patients must have full-blown AIDS, severely weakened immune systems, and may be on their deathbeds before they can receive the drugs?” I knew little of the subject, other than that in the United States HIV-positive patients who are on drugs may avoid many of the opportunistic infections and complications that come from delaying treatment until the CD4 count is low. My initial confusion over …

Toward A Rfra That Works, Nicholas Nugent Apr 2008

Toward A Rfra That Works, Nicholas Nugent

Vanderbilt Law Review

The history of the Supreme Court's First Amendment jurisprudence regarding the proper standard of protection for the free exercise of religion is complicated. In determining how the First Amendment speaks to situations in which generally applicable health, welfare, and safety laws incidentally or accidentally burden certain individuals' religious practices, the Court has vacillated between different standards and different extremes, overruling itself several times. Early on, the Court held that, provided the government did not interfere deliberately with religion for religious reasons, an inadvertent interference with religious practice raised no Free xercise Clause problem,' "no matter how trivial the state's nonreligious …

The Fda And Nano: Big Problems With Tiny Technology, Jessica K. Fender Apr 2008

The Fda And Nano: Big Problems With Tiny Technology, Jessica K. Fender

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Nanotechnology-related products and materials are becoming increasingly prevalent in our society. In the U.S., much of the burden for regulating these products falls upon the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Thus far, the FDA has insisted that its present regulatory scheme is adequate to the task of analyzing nanotechnology products. Other administrative agencies, however, have recognized the special properties that can attach to nanosized materials. For example, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has created a special cross-reference classification: Class 977. By cross-referencing an application or a patent under Class 977, the USPTO provides strong evidence that the invention …

The Destructive Legacy Of Deforestation In The Amazon, Jennifer Rodriguez Apr 2008

The Destructive Legacy Of Deforestation In The Amazon, Jennifer Rodriguez

ESSAI

As the global penalties of industrialization and human land use become more evident in the world we call home, more questions are raised about the future of our Earth and its inhabitants. This paper intends to look back and revisit history and why the Earth has fallen prey to global warming and the alarmingly rapid rate of destruction of its biodiversity through the means of deforestation. While the current state of the Earth and its rapidly disappearing rainforests are of global concern, the global community hungry for profits, development, and expansion of industrialization is also destroying them. In Brazil, the …

Biomechanical Modeling Of Forelimb Adduction In The Eastern Mole, Scalopusaquaticus, Mark Sandefur Apr 2008

Biomechanical Modeling Of Forelimb Adduction In The Eastern Mole, Scalopusaquaticus, Mark Sandefur

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The hypertrophied musculoskeletal system driving adduction of Sealopus aquatieus's forelimb supports the locomotion of these burrowing subterranean mammals. Due to the excessive bulk of the major muscles contributing to this action, it was thought that this particular species may represent a rare case of a mammalian species with a greatly enhanced force contribution from each muscle, correlating with a reduction in the potential for the forelimb to adduct at a high velocity. By assessing the lever ratios of five significant muscles contributing to forelimb adduction, combined with vector analyses for the angles of these muscles' insertions, a model was established …

Academic Aunting: Reimaging Feminist (Wo)Mentoring, Teaching, And Relationships., Laura L. Ellingson, Patricia Sotirin Apr 2008

Academic Aunting: Reimaging Feminist (Wo)Mentoring, Teaching, And Relationships., Laura L. Ellingson, Patricia Sotirin

Gender and Sexuality Studies

In this essay, we explore the potential of aunting relationships for rethinking feminist selves and relationships, especially in academic settings. Relationships between generations of academic feminists have often been described using mother-daughter metaphors. We suggest some limitations to framing teaching and learning across academic generations (e.g., teacher-student) and among colleagues (e.g., peer review of scholarship) using maternal imagery. We then argue that the figure of the aunt offers a powerful trope for negotiating relationships between the "waves" of academic feminism. Aunts provide a generative alternative to mothering and sisterhood as frameworks for feminist womentoring, teaching, and scholarly reviewing.

Using A Paradigm Shift To Teach Neurobiology And The Nature Of Science—A C.R.E.A.T.E.-Based Approach, Sally G. Hoskins Apr 2008

Using A Paradigm Shift To Teach Neurobiology And The Nature Of Science—A C.R.E.A.T.E.-Based Approach, Sally G. Hoskins

Publications and Research

Decades ago, classic experiments established the phenomenon of “neural induction” (Spemann and Mangold, 1924; Holtfreter, 1933). It appeared clear that amphibian ectoderm was pre-programmed to form epidermis, and that the neural phenotype was induced by a chemical signal from mesoderm. The “ectoderm makes skin, unless induced to make nervous system” model appeared in many textbooks. This interpretation, however, was not simply incorrect but 180 degrees out of alignment with the actual situation. As subsequently demonstrated, the default state of amphibian ectoderm is neuronal, and the expression of the epidermal phenotype requires cell signaling (Hemmati-Brivanlou and Melton, 1992; 1994; 1997). In …

Stomata Densities Of Developing And Mature Leaves Of Geraniums, Robert Schletz Apr 2008

Stomata Densities Of Developing And Mature Leaves Of Geraniums, Robert Schletz

ESSAI

Stomata are pores on specialized epidermal cells of plant leaves that facilitate photosynthesis and water transport. This research using geraniums, seeks to determine if stomata densities vary among developing and mature leaves. Epidermal leaf impressions were taken and stomata densities were calculated. Developing leaves were found to average 7.75 ± 0.79 and mature leaves 5.65 ± 0.44. This was found to be statistically significant and is thought to be a result of the maximization of growth potential by developing leaves balanced by a need to regulate water loss by mature leaves.
