IMSA Fund Reports

Message From the President

As a long-time educator in Illinois, I have admired IMSA’s role as an international leader in developing talent and leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). I am honored and privileged to now serve as IMSA’s second president.

This first year, I have been meeting with educational leaders and policy makers across Illinois as well as IMSA students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and donors to solicit ideas and determine our critical needs. From these conversations, I am convinced that IMSA’s service to students, teachers and schools is more relevant and important than ever. The challenges …

Fabrication Of Bioactive Osteogenic Controlled-Release Systems, Cellular Platforms, And Cellular Capsules Using Layer -By -Layer Nanoassembly, Skylar Stewart-Clark

Doctoral Dissertations

There is an ever-increasing awareness that the field of tissue engineering offers many potential solutions to clinical problems. While advances along these lines have been made, the design and implementation of an "off the shelf" tissue is yet to be realized. Thus, the objectives of this work were largely aimed at the design and fabrication of biocompatible, bioactive structures which could be integrated into existing biomaterial products.

The electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique was used to incorporate biologically relevant molecules within controlled release systems, cell culture platforms, and 3-D cellular capsules. Two delivery systems were investigated to determine the release …

Give Life Without Losing Life: The Casa Materna Of Matagalpa And The Struggle To Prevent Maternal Death, Lily Emiko Friedman Apr 2008

Give Life Without Losing Life: The Casa Materna Of Matagalpa And The Struggle To Prevent Maternal Death, Lily Emiko Friedman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Maternal mortality has a face. It is the health indicator with the greatest disparity between the developed and developing worlds, disproportionately affecting poor women with low levels of education, high levels of fertility, and inadequate access to health services. It is the health inequality that most clearly shows how poor health outcomes continue to be directly linked to poverty and socioeconomic disadvantage, while the right to safe pregnancy and motherhood comes with economic privilege. As it occupies such a critical position in community health, maternal mortality has been widely studied and the target of countless health interventions aimed at its …

Systems Biology: The Solution To Understanding Alcohol-Induced Disorders?, National Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism

United States Public Health Resources

With the decoding of the human genome, researchers gained access to extensive information about the molecules in the body, how they function in the healthy organism, and how they may contribute to certain diseases. However, despite this wealth of information, many questions remain about the ways in which these molecules interact to control more complex phenomena, including the development of many common disorders. Systems biology offers scientists a promising tool with which to deal with such complexities and may revolutionize the prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of alcohol use disorders and other multifaceted disorders. These new approaches provide researchers with new …

Recollecting Memory, Reviewing History: Trauma In Asian North American Literature, Guan-Rong Chen Apr 2008

Recollecting Memory, Reviewing History: Trauma In Asian North American Literature, Guan-Rong Chen

English Dissertations - Archive

My dissertation focuses on representations of traumas in select eight Asian North American novels. I attempt to draw attention to this underrepresented issue of the Asian minority's traumatic experiences. Trauma in my discussion includes double consciousness, national trauma of war, white racism toward the Asian minority, children's perspectives on melancholia and loss, as well as psychosomatic trauma and violence on the female body. In Chapter One, I argue that in Jade Snow Wong's Fifth Chinese Daughter and Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone double consciousness is represented as a racial(ized) trauma that creates an ideological dichotomy between East and West, and constrains …

Airborne Laser Scanning Quantification Of Disturbances From Hurricanes And Lightning Strikes To Mangrove Forests In Everglades National Park, Usa, Keqi Zhang, Marc Simard, Michael Ross, Victor H. Rivera-Monroy, Patricia Houle, Pablo Ruiz, Robert R. Twilley, Kevin R.T. Whelan

Faculty Publications

Airborne light detection and ranging (LIDAR) measurements derived before and after Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma (2005) were used to quantify the impact of hurricanes and lightning strikes on the mangrove forest at two sites in Everglades National Park (ENP). Analysis of LIDAR measurements covering 61 and 68 ha areas of mangrove forest at the Shark River and Broad River sites showed that the proportion of high tree canopy detected by the LIDAR after the 2005 hurricane season decreased significantly due to defoliation and breakage of branches and trunks, while the proportion of low canopy and the ground increased drastically. Tall …

Combating Terrorism At Sea -- The Suppression Of Unlawful Acts Against The Safety Of Maritime Navigation, Helmut Tuerk Apr 2008

Combating Terrorism At Sea -- The Suppression Of Unlawful Acts Against The Safety Of Maritime Navigation, Helmut Tuerk

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

While piracy is an age-old phenomenon plaguing mankind, terrorism at sea has only manifested itself in recent times through the Achille Lauro hijacking in 1985 serving as a wake-up call. The international community has since been striving to adopt a series of legal as well as practical measures in order to prevent a recurrence of such a terrorist act because the rules of international law relating to piracy are not applicable mutatis mutandis to terrorism. The Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation was adopted in 1988. This Convention addressed terrorism at sea for …

Using The Polar Bear Framework To Protect The Arctic Habitat, Tim P. Shields Apr 2008

Using The Polar Bear Framework To Protect The Arctic Habitat, Tim P. Shields

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Listing the polar bear as a threatened species is the predominant manner in which protection and preservation of the Arctic habitat might be achieved. The U.S. Geological Survey issued a final report on the status of the polar bear on September 7, 2007. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, however, has missed its deadline to list the polar bear as a threatened animal. As a result, three non-profit conservation groups sued the Bush Administration on March 10, 2008, requesting that the court require the agency to comply with the timeline for completing the listing process.

The Poet As Pretender: Poetic Legitimacy In Cvetaeva, Sibelan E.S. Forrester Apr 2008

The Poet As Pretender: Poetic Legitimacy In Cvetaeva, Sibelan E.S. Forrester

Is The Cheating Risk Always Higher In Online Instruction Compared To Face-To-Face Instruction?, Oskar Harmon, James Lambrinos, Judy Buffolino Apr 2008

Is The Cheating Risk Always Higher In Online Instruction Compared To Face-To-Face Instruction?, Oskar Harmon, James Lambrinos, Judy Buffolino

Economics Working Papers

This article analyzes the exposure to cheating risk of online courses relative to face-to-face courses at a single institution. For our sample of 20 online courses we report that the cheating risk is higher than for equivalent face-to-face courses because of reliance on un-proctored multiple choice exams. We conclude that the combination of a proctored final exam, and strategic use cheating deterrents in the administration of un-proctored multiple choice exams, would significantly reduce the cheating risk differential without substantially altering the assessment design of online instruction.
