42nd Conference On Senior Engineering Design Projects, College Of Engineering And Applied Sciences
Senior Engineering Design Conference
The 42nd Conference on Senior Engineering Design Projects was held on April 15, 2008 at the College of Engineering and applied Sciences on the Parkview Campus of Western Michigan University. The college sponsors the conference to showcase the work of its graduating seniors, who are required to complete a capstone project that puts into practice what they have learned. Many of the projects are sponsored by business and industry.

Profile: The Importance Of Place, University Relations
Profile: The Importance Of Place, University Relations
Profile (1996-)
Those of us who live in Morris are reminded of the pull of "place" every time we face the juxtaposition of rural and urban--when we move from the Morris rush-minute at Fifth and Atlantic to the 494 rush-hour of the Twin Cities. We are reminded of place every time we are called on to explain to our urban friends what it is people do here. In this sense--in the lack of knowledge of the rural and how rich our lives are here--Morris and its environs take on a kind of exotic, unknown, "other" quality. To those who have never left …

Respiratory Effects Of 1-Propylxanthine On Neonatal Rats, Amanda Hance
Respiratory Effects Of 1-Propylxanthine On Neonatal Rats, Amanda Hance
Student Honors Theses
Neonatal apnea is commonly treated by methylxanthines like caffeine or theophylline, but these drugs have the potential to create serious side effects. As an alternative, a new xanthine analog, 1-propylxanthine (1-PX), was recently synthesized at Eastern Illinois University. The respiratory effects of 1-PX were investigated in 4- to 7-day-old rats to determine if 1-PX could be a respiratory stimulant. Each rat was placed in a heated body plethysmograph, and its respiratory rate and volume were measured using a flow transducer, pneumotachograph, and Power Lab data acquisition system. After a 10-min control period, the rat was given a s.c. dose of …
Sources Of Wood & Wood Residues For Energy Production In Indiana, Isaac Slaven, Eva Haviarova, Klein Ileleji
Sources Of Wood & Wood Residues For Energy Production In Indiana, Isaac Slaven, Eva Haviarova, Klein Ileleji
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
As energy prices rise and there is a push for energy to be produced from renewable resources, the contribution of Indiana’s corn and soybean industry often overshadows the impact that the State’s wood residues can have in response to these demands. Reports show that the wood products industry is the largest, by paid wages, of any agricultural industry in Indiana and employs 47,000 Indianans.1 In fact, Indiana has more than 4.5 million acres of forest land,2 compared to about 12.3 million acres of cropland.3 In addition to the millions of acres of forestland, Indiana has more than 1,600 wood products …

Modeling And Characterization Of Adaptive Lanthanum-Modified Lead Zirconate Titanate (Plzt) Microlenses, Yasser A. Abdelaziez, Partha P. Banerjee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We report the modeling and characterization of adaptive voltage controlled electro-optic microlenses. First, we utilize finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate the induced electro-optic effect in lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT). FEA simulation provides microlens parameters such as phase and focal length. A simple z-scan method is developed to fully characterize the adaptive voltage controlled linear lens. Experimental z-scan results are shown to match the theoretical predictions from FEA.
Time Spent On Testing, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Time Spent On Testing, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Policy Briefs
In an era of standards-based school reform and the No Child Left Behind legislation, standardized testing has figured more prominently in discussions involving K-12 education. In Arkansas, one does not have to look far or listen too intently to hear concerns voiced about the amount of testing going on in public schools. Today's conventional wisdom holds that our students spend far too much time on these exams. However, since the conventional wisdom is not always true, we decided it was a good idea to ask the question: How much time are our students spending on standardized exams? In this brief, …

Stressors And Supports For Baccalaureate Nursing Students Completing An Accelerated Program, Marilyn L. Weitzel, Cheryl P. Mccahon
Nursing Faculty Publications
This study examined stressors and resources for nursing students in an accelerated program. The research questions asked what the stressors and coping strategies are for accelerated option students. It also asked which learning strategies help or hinder accelerated option students in meeting the program objectives. The sample included students from an accelerated nursing program in an urban Midwestern university school of nursing. Participants completed a quantitative questionnaire and an interview. Findings suggested that nearly half of the students preferred the lecture format for classroom presentations. Clinical experiences were perceived as the most important component of the program. Resources included peers, …

Traveling Waves And Shocks In A Viscoelastic Generalization Of Burgers' Equation, Victor Camacho '07, Robert D. Guy, Jon T. Jacobsen
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We consider traveling wave phenomena for a viscoelastic generalization of Burgers' equation. For asymptotically constant velocity profiles we find three classes of solutions corresponding to smooth traveling waves, piecewise smooth waves, and piecewise constant (shock) solutions. Each solution type is possible for a given pair of asymptotic limits, and we characterize the dynamics in terms of the relaxation time and viscosity.

Gay And Lesbian Studies In Brazil: A Field In Construction, Berenice Bento
Gay And Lesbian Studies In Brazil: A Field In Construction, Berenice Bento
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
Traditionally, sexuality studies in Brazil have been organized around ideas of normalization. Specialists in the field have been trained to observe and comment on behaviours that did not conform to the imperatives of heterosexuality. Gender was polarized and hierarchical, and gained meaning from the idea of separate, complementary sexes. Heterosexuality gave meaning to human existence and reproduction, and every other kind of sexual expression was measured according to the rule of heteronormativity.

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
Can't sleep? Well you're not alone, especially among women. A 2007 poll by the National Sleep Foundation found that 67 percent of women frequently experience sleep problems and 29 percent use some type of sleep aid at least a few nights a week. Other surveys have consistently found that nearly half again as many women as men complain of insomnia.
