Agroforestry: Working Trees For Sequestering Carbon On Agricultural Lands, Michele M. Schoeneberger
Agroforestry: Working Trees For Sequestering Carbon On Agricultural Lands, Michele M. Schoeneberger
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Agroforestry is an appealing option for sequestering carbon on agricultural lands because it can sequester significant amounts of carbon while leaving the bulk of the land in agricultural production. Simultaneously, it can help landowners and society address many other issues facing these lands, such as economic diversification, biodiversity, and water quality. Nonetheless, agroforestry remains under-recognized as a greenhouse gas mitigation option for agriculture in the US. Reasons for this include the limited information base and number of tools agroforestry can currently offer as compared to that produced from the decades-worth of investment in agriculture and forestry, and agroforestry’s cross-cutting nature …
Complete Nucleotide Sequence Of A Maize Chlorotic Mottle Virus Isolate From Nebraska, Drake Stenger, Roy C. French
Complete Nucleotide Sequence Of A Maize Chlorotic Mottle Virus Isolate From Nebraska, Drake Stenger, Roy C. French
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The complete genome of a maize chlorotic mottle virus isolate from Nebraska (MCMV-NE) was cloned and sequenced. The MCMV-NE genome consists of 4,436 nucleotides and shares 99.5 nucleotide sequence identity with an MCMV isolate from Kansas (MCMV-KS). Of 22 polymorphic sites, most resulted from transition with a clear bias for U to C and C to U substitutions. The MCMV-NE genome was assembled into a single plasmid insert and used as a template to transcribe RNA in vitro. As RNA transcribed from the cloned MCMV-NE genome was infectious to maize plants, sequence differences between MCMV-NE and MCMV-KS are most likely …
Designing Non-Saccharide Heparin/Heparan Sulfate Mimics, Arjun Raghuraman
Designing Non-Saccharide Heparin/Heparan Sulfate Mimics, Arjun Raghuraman
Theses and Dissertations
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are complex biopolymers that play important roles in inflammation, coagulation, angiogenesis, cell adhesion and viral invasion by interacting with several different proteins.1,2 Structurally, GAGs are built up of several different sulfated disaccharide units.3 Specific GAG sequences that uniquely recognize their cognate proteins exist. Such specificity typically arises from the binding of unique sulfation patterns on the linear GAG chain to highly electropositive protein domains. Thus, these highly charged, sulfated biopolymers potentially represent a new class of therapeutics. Yet, the major stumbling block to the development to these agents is their extremely complicated and tedious chemical synthesis. We hypothesized …

Boundary And Longing: Narrative Modes In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And The Last Man, Marie Hendry
Boundary And Longing: Narrative Modes In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And The Last Man, Marie Hendry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Boundary and desire surround the relationships in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and The Last Man. The narrative modes of Captain Robert Walton relate his separation to the rest of the world and his need for companionship. Yet, not any companionship will satisfy his longing for connection with a human being; his search revolves around the need of common understanding. This further separates the character of Lionel in The Last Man from humanity in that he is unable to find anyone left on earth after a series of plague, war, and atmospheric anomalies apparently wipe out the human race. His survival …
(Re)Defining Relationships In A Mediated Context: Graduate Student Use Of Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication, Michael P. Nicholas
(Re)Defining Relationships In A Mediated Context: Graduate Student Use Of Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication, Michael P. Nicholas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study consists of qualitative interviews with 8 graduate students about the use of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC), or instant message (IM), programs in their interpersonal relationships. Participants were interviewed twice, once via an instant message program and once in a face-to-face setting. They were asked about their frequency of use, their use of multi-tasking, and the types of conversations they have via IM. Results of the interviews are discussed, with a concentration on the paradoxical nature of IM communication as impersonal, but at the same time, conducive to personal disclosure and intimacy.
Black Beauty As Antebellum Slave Narrative, Bonnie L. Blossom
Black Beauty As Antebellum Slave Narrative, Bonnie L. Blossom
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Published in November 1877, Black Beauty is one of the most popular and enduring works of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book, in which the eponymous narrator relates his life's story, sold well following its publication in England and in the United States; by 1985, sales were estimated at over forty million. While usually regarded as entertaining, Black Beauty has a strong crusading purpose: Anna Sewell herself said she wrote to improve the treatment of horses.
This study springs from an intuitive notion. While reading the 1845 Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, I could not shake …

Isolation And Functional Characterization Of A Dioxin-Inducible Cyp1a Regulatory Region From Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Gary T. Zeruth
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) is a phase I bio-transformation enzyme involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics via the oxygenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including the carcinogen, benzo(a)pyrene. Induction of the CYP1A1 gene is regulated at the transcriptional level and is ligand dependent with the prototypical 2,3,7,8,-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) being the most potent known inducer of CYP1A1 transcription. This process is mediated by the AHR/ARNT signaling pathway whereby ligand binds AHR in the cytoplasm allowing its translocation to the nucleus where it binds with its hertrodimerization partner, ARNT and subsequently binds DNA at cognate binding sites termed xenobiotic …

Automatic Classification Of Long Term Involuntary Spontaneous Emg, Jeffrey S. Winslow
Automatic Classification Of Long Term Involuntary Spontaneous Emg, Jeffrey S. Winslow
Open Access Dissertations
Involuntary electromyographic (EMG) activity has been recorded in the thenar (thumb) muscles of spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects for only short time periods (minutes), but it is unknown if this motor unit activity is ongoing. Longer duration EMG recordings can investigate the physiological significance of this neuromuscular activity. Analysis of these data is complex and time consuming. Since no software is currently capable of classifying 24 hours of data at a single motor unit level, the goal of this research was to devise an algorithm to automatically classify motor unit potentials over 24-hours. Twenty-four-hour, 2-channel thenar muscle EMG recordings were …

A Distinct Role For B1b Lymphocytes In T Cell-Independent Immunity, Kishore R. Alugupalli
A Distinct Role For B1b Lymphocytes In T Cell-Independent Immunity, Kishore R. Alugupalli
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Pathogenesis of infectious disease is not only determined by the virulence of the microbe but also by the immune status of the host. Vaccination is the most effective means to control infectious diseases. A hallmark of the adaptive immune system is the generation of B cell memory, which provides a long-lasting protective antibody response that is central to the concept of vaccination. Recent studies revealed a distinct function for B1b lymphocytes, a minor subset of mature B cells that closely resembles that of memory B cells in a number of aspects. In contrast to the development of conventional B cell …

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Synchrotron x-ray diffraction and diamond anvil cell techniques were used to characterize the phase transformations and to evaluate the structural stability at elevated pressures of a developed nanocrystalline composite. The optically transparent material was built of a germanium oxide-based amorphous host matrix with homogeneously dispersed 13±3 nm Ga-Ge mullite-type nanocrystals, which had a structure similar to the conventional Al2O3-SiO2 mullite. The equation of state of the nanocrystals and the overall structural integrity of the nanocomposite were investigated in quasihydrostatic conditions on compression to 36 GPa and on the following decompression to ambient conditions. The overall …

Constructing A Biological Breathalyzer, Cory Cheatham
Constructing A Biological Breathalyzer, Cory Cheatham
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
The goal of this research is the manipulation of yeast cells, granting them the capability of measuring the concentration of ethanol present. This project utilizes the metabolic pathways of the yeast Pichia pastoris, which are capable of metabolizing ethanol and methanol. The enzyme, alcohol oxidase (AO), encoded in the AOX gene appears to be the major enzyme involved in methanol metabolism. If both carbon sources are present, however, P. pastoris prefers to utilize ethanol first. Fusing the AOX promoter with a fluorescent protein gene will allow visible detection of the expression of AOX. In supplying the yeast with ethanol and …
The Synthesis Of Biodegradable Microparticles For Pharmaceutical Use, Michael Everett Probasco
The Synthesis Of Biodegradable Microparticles For Pharmaceutical Use, Michael Everett Probasco
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Poly (lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLAGA) is a commonly used polymer carrier in the controlled delivery of therapeutic agents because it degrades into naturally occurring compounds which the body easily metabolizes over a period of time. The goal of the research is to develop microparticles loaded with a drug of choice, in this case BEstradiol, establish predictable time degradation of the drug in the body, and to be able to develop a process method that results in consistent production.

The project described herein is part of an existing effort to determine if: 1) virtual-reality software can be an effective supplement for secondary science education, and 2) virtual-reality educational software can be developed efficiently and cost effectively from an existing game engine. For my portion of the research, I will develop exercises and activities to be implemented in the game (currently in development), and associated lesson plans to aid teachers in integrating the software into classroom instruction. The educational tools I develop will be consistent with the Missouri State Education Standards. I also will conduct usability analyses to determine: 1) …
Effect Of An Acid Catalyst On The Hydrothermal Conversion Of Biomass To Coal, Megan Oldroyd
Effect Of An Acid Catalyst On The Hydrothermal Conversion Of Biomass To Coal, Megan Oldroyd
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Cellulosic and lignocellulosic biomass from agricultural waste (wheat, rice, com and soy straw) as well as forestry (brushwood), industrial (sawmill dust and wood chips) and municipal (grass and yard clippings) waste is more and more viewed as a renewable and carbon-efficient energy source. Pyrolysis and hydrothermal degradation are procedures known to convert biomass to fuel. Compared with the pyrolysis at 700 cc, however, hydrothermal conversion is conducted in aqueous solution at only 180 cc. Thus, it is potentially the more energy efficient procedure, and may even convert very wet biomass such as pulp or mill sludge to fuel. The mechanism …

Computer Science Recruitment For The 21st Century (Csrecruit21), Lisa Guntly, Jasmine Glaese, Jessica Williams
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
The goal of this project is to create recruitment software to aid in reversing the alarming trend of decreasing interest in Computer Science (CS) among American students, particularly women. The current generation of American students, especially women, tends to be attracted to fields with clear social relevancy. Third through sixth grade is a crucial time when students form their opinions about, and interests in, math and science. Misconceptions about what CS is and a lack of understanding regarding its many socially relevant applications creates negative associations during this crucial time. These negative associations can result later in many women students …
