Distribution Of White Spruce In Alaska. An Open Access Prediction Surface From Climatic And Bioclimatic Parameters Using Esri Grid Formats., Falk Huettmann
Distribution Of White Spruce In Alaska. An Open Access Prediction Surface From Climatic And Bioclimatic Parameters Using Esri Grid Formats., Falk Huettmann
Faculty
This open access data set contains a spatially gridded distribution of White Spruce in Alaska (ESRI GRID format), predicted from climatic and bioclimatic parameters (temperature, precipitation, elevation, and aspect). A species distribution model, developed by Bettina Ohse, was used to determine the ecological niche of the species based on the environmental variables. The model was developed within TreeNet, a classification and regression tree software. The ecological niche was then projected into geographical space, resulting in a predictive map of the species distribution in Alaska (4km resolution, tested accuracy of c. 95 %). We used ArcGIS 9.2. Data sources were freely …

Indigenous Emotional Economies In Alaska: Surviving Youth In The Village, Stacy Michelle Rasmus
Indigenous Emotional Economies In Alaska: Surviving Youth In The Village, Stacy Michelle Rasmus
Anthropology
According to the Status of Alaska Natives Report 2004 produced by the Institute of Social and Economic Research, University of Alaska Anchorage, Native youth in rural Alaska experience significant mental health disparity. Suicide rates for Alaska Native youth are the highest in the nation, and substance abuse, social misconduct and teenage pregnancy rates are also much higher among the rural, indigenous population in Alaska. These disparate rates have caused many to ask; what is going on with the youth in the villages today? This dissertation reports on research conducted to help answer that question, and identify local intervention strategies for …
Molecular Identification And Analysis Of Treponematosis (Syphilis, Bejel, Yaws, Or Pinta) In Ancient Mummified Remains From Northern Chile And Southern Peru, Michelle Kaye
Anthropology
The sequencing of Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis, and the identification of a family of 12 genes with sequence similarity that allows scientists to distinguish between treponemal subtypes has opened up a new line of inquiry for biological anthropologists. This research contributes genetic evidence of pre-contact treponematosis in the Americas; by combining osteological and molecular evidence with data on environment and cultural practices, it also furthers our knowledge of human-pathogen interaction. This research assessed the presence of treponematosis, a bacterial spirochete, in the DNA of skeletal and mummified human remains from northern Chilean cemeteries dating from …

Cultivating Sustainability Through Participatory Action Research: Place -Based Education And Community Food Systems In Interior Alaska, Laura R. Henry-Stone
Cultivating Sustainability Through Participatory Action Research: Place -Based Education And Community Food Systems In Interior Alaska, Laura R. Henry-Stone
Indigenous Studies
As the environmental movement grows into a broader sustainability revolution, we must move beyond the traditional scope of environmental education to address social-ecological challenges through integrated education for sustainability. This research explores how place-based education can promote sustainability of a community food system in which feedbacks between production and consumption are integrated within a biocultural region. Through participatory action research, the project develops and demonstrates pedagogical components of sustainability that are applicable to formal and non-formal educational contexts. In this pedagogy, the purpose of sustainability education is to foster a community culture that will promote the emergence of sustainability in …
Applied Range Ecology Of Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus Tarandus) On The Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Gregory Lawrence Finstad
Applied Range Ecology Of Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus Tarandus) On The Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Gregory Lawrence Finstad
Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences
Linking variation of the environment to animal production is key to successful range management. Ecological site descriptions (ESDs) are landscape units used by land managers for the grazing management of domestic reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus tarandus) on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska. This study investigated the appropriateness of using ESDs for the grazing management of reindeer and explored the use of alternate units to link landscape variation to animal production. ESD composition of reindeer ranges varied across the Seward Peninsula, but there was no relationship to either animal production, estimated by June calf weight and cow/calf ratios, or reindeer serum and …

Adaptations Of The Bacterial Flywheel For Optimal Mineral Cycling In Oligotrophic Surface Waters, Elizabeth S. Gustafson
Adaptations Of The Bacterial Flywheel For Optimal Mineral Cycling In Oligotrophic Surface Waters, Elizabeth S. Gustafson
Marine Biology
Nutrient cycling in a subarctic oligotrophic lake was explored using current kinetic theory for organisms adapted to low nutrient environments with emphasis on bacterial contributions to system function. Techniques were refined which minimize sample disturbance and contamination for the purpose of accurately measuring bacterioplankton activity. Seasonal variations in DNA content, cell mass, species composition, specific affinity for amino acids and cell yield were observed. Quasi-steady state formulae describe bacteria as a flywheel in nutrient cycling; energy is conserved within a relatively constant biomass by varying bacterial activity with nutrient availability. The bacterial flywheel paradigm provides a bacteriocentric view of mineral …

Foraging Ecology And Nutritional Stress Of Tufted Puffins (Fratercula Cirrhata) Inferred From Stable Isotopes, Fatty Acid Signatures, And Field Endocrinology, Cory T. Williams
Marine Biology
Prey availability has a major impact on the reproductive output of seabirds, yet information on seabird diets throughout the breeding season is often lacking. Although reduced prey availability is known to affect the growth and survival of nestling seabirds, few studies have demonstrated similar effects on indices of adult body condition. I used stable isotopes and fatty acid (FA) signatures to investigate seasonal and age-related variation in the foraging niches of tufted puffins (Fratercula cirrhata). I conducted captive feeding experiments to determine whether inferences based on these techniques are affected by moderate food restriction during growth. I also examined how …

Local Perceptions And Regional Climate Trends On The Central Plateau Of Burkina Faso, C.T. West, C. Roncoli, F. Ouattara
ISER Reports
Due to devastating droughts in the 1970s and 1980s, climatic and environmental change in the West African Sahel has attracted a great deal of scientific research. While many of these studies documented a long-term trend of declining rainfall, analyses conducted in the last few years suggest that a ‘recovery’ is underway. Drawing on ethnographic interviews, focus groups, and participant observation in two Provinces of the Central Plateau of Burkina Faso, we elicited local perspectives on these rainfall trends from the people who are most directly affected, namely local farmers. Fieldwork revealed that farmers in the research sites perceive that both …

It Was Bad Or It Was Good: Alaska Natives In Past Boarding Schools, Diane Hirshberg
ISER Reports
In 2004 and 2005 my colleagues and I gathered information on the boarding school and boarding home experiences of 60 Alaska Native adults who attended boarding schools or participated in the urban boarding home program from the late 1940s through the early 1980s. From the early 1900s to the 1970s Alaska Natives were taken from rural communities that lacked either primary or secondary schools and sent to boarding schools run by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), by private churches or, later, by Alaska's state government. Some were also sent to boarding homes to attend school in urban places. …

Site Fidelity: Definition, Measurement And Implications For Population Structure Using Mark-Recapture, Genetic, And Comparative Data In The Hooded, Red-Breasted, And Common Merganser, John Maunsel Pearce
Biological Sciences
For species that return each year to the same breeding or nonbreeding area, subsequent biological assumptions have included population genetic structure, demographic independence, and possible irreversible extirpation of a site-faithful group due to low immigration. Little is known about patterns of site fidelity, population structure, and migratory patterns of the three species of mergansers that breed and winter in North America: the Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus), the Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator ) and Common Merganser (M. merganser). The primary objective of this study was not only to infer general levels of site fidelity with different data types (mark-recapture and genetic), …
The Effects Of Climate Change On The Population Dynamics Of Trumpeter Swans, Joshua H. Schmidt
The Effects Of Climate Change On The Population Dynamics Of Trumpeter Swans, Joshua H. Schmidt
Biological Sciences
Survey data for trumpeter swans were collected throughout Alaska since 1968, but due to design difficulties and past analytical limitations, previous analyses were limited to simple summary statistics. The main purpose of my work was to rigorously analyze these data using advanced methods and determine rates of population change, the effects of environmental change on habitat use, and the influences of habitat features on habitat occupancy. I estimated that the adult population grew at a rate of 5.9% (95% credible interval = 5.2% to 6.6%) and production of cygnets increased at 5.3% (95% credible interval = 2.2% to 8.0%) annually. …
Perspectives On The Dynamic Human-Walrus Relationship, Martin D. Robards
Perspectives On The Dynamic Human-Walrus Relationship, Martin D. Robards
Biological Sciences
Changes in sea ice conditions have direct bearing on ice-associated species such as Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens), which are an important component of subsistence for Alaska Native communities in the Bering Sea. I explore the relationship between walrus, sea ice, and Alaska Native subsistence at Diomede, Gambell, and Savoonga between 1952 and 2004 to better understand walrus ecology and subsistence under different climatic regimes. I then consider how the inability to reliably and regularly count walrus and other ice-associated pinnipeds in this dynamic environment challenges effective management of walrus and subsistence under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). However, …

Larval Description Of Cicindela (Dromochorus) Pruinina (Casey) (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) With Notes On Habitat And Adult Behavior, Stephen M. Spomer, Paul B. Nabity, Mathew L. Brust
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Cicindela (Dromochorus) pruinina (Casey) is a flightless tiger beetle that was described by Casey in 1897. Since its description, it has had a diverse nomenclatural history. It occurs from Kansas and central Missouri south through Oklahoma to south Texas. Aspects of the life history are poorly known, and the larval stages have not been described. Collections of live adults from Onaga, Kansas, were transferred to a terrarium, eggs were obtained, and larvae were reared and described. Larvae were similar to other known species of Cicindela L. Notes on habitat and adult behavior were also made.
The Effects Of Triclosan Derivatives Against The Growth Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Joseph R. Grubbs Jr.
The Effects Of Triclosan Derivatives Against The Growth Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Joseph R. Grubbs Jr.
Senior Honors Theses
Triclosan is an antimicrobial commonly used in many different antiseptics and everyday products. Unfortunately, many bacteria are now resistant to triclosan due to innate resistance, mutations in the fabI gene, and/or overexpression of certain other genes (soxS, marA, and an efflux pump encoded by acrAB). Therefore, it is essential that drugs be developed to destroy bacteria now resistant to triclosan. In this experiment, four different derivatives of triclosan were tested for antibacterial capabilities under the supervision of Dr. Hubbard at Liberty University. The derivatives were synthesized by Professor McGibbon (professor of organic chemistry at LU). Solutions of 4.0 ug/mL of …

Juvenile Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon Ecology, Edward V. Farley
Juvenile Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon Ecology, Edward V. Farley
Fisheries
Predicting annual returns of Bristol Bay sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) has been difficult due to large, unexplained variations in return strength. Ocean conditions, particularly during the first few months after salmon leave freshwater, are believed to have a strong influence on their early marine growth and survival. Limited historical and present research suggests that sea temperature can affect juvenile Bristol Bay distribution. During years with cool spring sea temperatures, juvenile sockeye salmon are distributed nearshore along the Alaska Peninsula, whereas they are found further offshore during years with warm spring sea temperatures. Juvenile sockeye salmon are larger, in better condition, …
