Evidence For Contrasting Modes Of Selection At Interacting Globin Genes In The European Rabbit (Oryctolagus Cuniculus), R. Campos, Jay F. Storz, N. Ferrand Apr 2008

Evidence For Contrasting Modes Of Selection At Interacting Globin Genes In The European Rabbit (Oryctolagus Cuniculus), R. Campos, Jay F. Storz, N. Ferrand

Jay F. Storz Publications

In hybrid zones between genetically differentiated populations, variation in locus-specific rates of introgression may reflect adaptation to different environments or adaptation to different genetic backgrounds. The European rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, is well-suited to studies of such hybrid zone dynamics because it is composed of two genetically divergent subspecies that hybridize in a zone of secondary contact in central Iberia. A species-wide survey of allozyme variation revealed a broad range of locus-specific divergence levels (FST ranged from 0 to 0.54, mean FST = 0.16). Interestingly, the two loci that fell at opposite ends of the distribution of …

The Economic Optimal Weight For The Replacement Beef Female, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson Apr 2008

The Economic Optimal Weight For The Replacement Beef Female, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

Determining the optimal weight for breeding replacement heifers has been a goal of researchers for decades. It is an important question because replacing cows in the beef herd is expensive.

Finding the answer is a complex problem because of the inter-related nature of the economic and physiological variables. Patterson et al. (1992) may have expressed the nature of the problem best when he said, “Although puberty in the female and the events that precede its onset may be fixed from a physiological standpoint, the animal and management environment in which it is placed are in constant transition.” This indicates that …

Healing, Learning And Play, Kangana Bhatnagar Apr 2008

Healing, Learning And Play, Kangana Bhatnagar

Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that the first five years of life are critical for building the foundation for children’s success throughout their schooling and life. Throughout these first years of life there are a number of essential windows of opportunity during which certain kinds of stimuli are needed to help the brain develop and maintain critical connections necessary for learning. This project is a unification of a Child Development Center and a therapeutic center. This center includes children who suffer from bereavement; a broken home, death of a parent or child abuse. These children are provided with therapy by a specialist, and …

Ketika Perempuan Lantang Menentang Poligami; Sebuah Analisis Wacana Kritis Tentang Wacana Antipoligami, Untung Yuwono

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) has become a very influential interdisciplinary approach, which views a discourse as a form of social practice. Antipoligamy discourse, as a social practice persisted for a long time ago in Indonesia, offers chalenging discussions in the perspective of CDA. Teun van Dijk, as one of the pioneers of CDA, articulates ideology as the basis of the social representations of groups. Furthermore, he advocates a sociocognitive interface between social structures and discourse structures. Within these views, whenever social groups, including the producers of antipoligamy texts, voice their ideas and feelings, their ideology come up apparently or, otherwise, …

Production Of Fermentable Sugars From Agricultural Waste, Reid Alexander, Jason Ballengee, Nina Flores, Will French, Tyan Poffenroth

Engineering Senior Design Reports

The environmental and economic strains associated with oil have created the need to explore alternate sources for fuel production and use. One such alternative is ethanol derived from cellulosic material. This report specifies the design of a process used for the conversion of pecan husks into fermentable sugars. The design consists of physical grinding of the raw material, acid pretreatment of the cellulosic powder resulting from grinding, and enzymatic hydrolysis of the remaining polymeric sugars. Enzymes were produced through the culturing of a fungus called T. reesei. Results of testing indicate that optimal conditions for fungus growth are a …

The Mut9p Kinase Phosphorylates Histone H3 Threonine 3 And Is Necessary For Heritable Epigenetic Silencing In Chlamydomonas, Juan Casas-Mollano, Byeong-Ryool Jeong, Jianping Xu, Hideaki Moriyama, Heriberto D. Cerutti Apr 2008

The Mut9p Kinase Phosphorylates Histone H3 Threonine 3 And Is Necessary For Heritable Epigenetic Silencing In Chlamydomonas, Juan Casas-Mollano, Byeong-Ryool Jeong, Jianping Xu, Hideaki Moriyama, Heriberto D. Cerutti

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Changes in chromatin organization are emerging as key regulators in nearly every aspect of DNA-templated metabolism in eukaryotes. Histones undergo many, largely reversible, posttranslational modifications that affect chromatin structure. Some modifications, such as trimethylation of histone H3 on Lys 4 (H3K4me3), correlate with transcriptional activation, whereas others, such as methylation of histone H3 on Lys 27 (H3K27me), are associated with silent chromatin. Posttranslational histone modifications may also be involved in the inheritance of chromatin states. Histone phosphorylation has been implicated in a variety of cellular processes but, because of the dynamic nature of this modification, its potential role in long-term …

Ku86 Exists As Both A Full-Length And A Protease-Sensitive Natural Variant In Multiple Myeloma Cells, Charles A. Gullo Phd, Feng Ge, Geraline Cow, Gerrard Teoh Apr 2008

Ku86 Exists As Both A Full-Length And A Protease-Sensitive Natural Variant In Multiple Myeloma Cells, Charles A. Gullo Phd, Feng Ge, Geraline Cow, Gerrard Teoh

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background: Truncated variants of Ku86 protein have previously been detected in 86% to 100% of freshly isolated patient multiple myeloma (MM) cells. Since, the Ku70/Ku86 heterodimer functions as the regulatory subunit of the DNA repair enzyme, DNA-dependent protein kinase, we have been interested in the altered expression and function of Ku86 variant (Ku86v) proteins in genome maintenance of MM.

Results: Although, a number of studies have suggested that truncated forms of Ku proteins could be artificially generated by proteolytic degradation in vitro in human lymphocytes, we now show using whole cell immunoblotting that the RPMI-8226 and SGH-MM5 human MM cell …

Recombinant Stokesia Epoxygenase Gene, David Hildebrand, Tomoko Hatanaka Apr 2008

Recombinant Stokesia Epoxygenase Gene, David Hildebrand, Tomoko Hatanaka

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Patents

A chimeric gene comprising an isolated nucleic acid molecule encoding a delta 12-fatty acid epoxygenase enzyme and transgenic plants containing the chimeric gene are described. Expression of the chimeric delta 12-epoxygenase gene leads to altered levels of fatty acids in transformed cells.
