Pharmaceutical Science and Research

p53-dependent G1 and G2 cell cycle checkpoints are activated in response DNA damage that help to maintain genomic stability. p53 also helps to protect cells from damage that occurs during S phase, for example, when the cells are starved for DNA precursors or irradiated with a low dose of UV. p53 is activated in normal cells starved for pyrimidine nucleotides by treatment with N-(phosphonacetyl)-L-aspartate (PALA). The treated cells progress through a first S phase with kinetics similar to those of untreated cells. However, the DNA of the treated cells begins to become damaged rapidly, within 12 h, …

Nitrogen Uptake, Fixation And Response To Fertilizer N In Soybeans: A Review, F. Salvagiotti, Kenneth G. Cassman, James E. Specht, Daniel T. Walters, Albert Weiss, Achim R. Dobermann

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Although relationships among soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr) seed yield, nitrogen (N) uptake, biological N2 fixation (BNF), and response to N fertilization have received considerable coverage in the scientific literature, a comprehensive summary and interpretation of these interactions with specific emphasis on high yield environments is lacking. Six hundred and thirty-seven data sets (site–year–treatment combinations) were analyzed from field studies that had examined these variables and had been published in refereed journals from 1966 to 2006. A mean linear increase of 0.013 Mg soybean seed yield per kg increase in N accumulation in above-ground biomass was evident in …

Developing Lcfs For Biofuels: Getting It Right For Corn Ethanol, Kenneth Cassman, Adam Liska Apr 2008

Developing Lcfs For Biofuels: Getting It Right For Corn Ethanol, Kenneth Cassman, Adam Liska

Adam Liska Papers

• Corn ethanol will be first to test the newly developed LCFS assessment methods; substantial amounts of other biofuels will come several years later

• Accurate valuation of direct-effect GHG emissions from corn ethanol is the foundation of the LCFS process; these affects vary with ethanol biorefinery type and corn feedstock supply

• Different reference GHG emissions values are needed for each major class of ethanol plants

• The BESS model provides the most up-to-date, scientifically sound estimate of corn-ethanol GHG emissions; can BESS and GREET reach agreement?

• Certification and compliance tools are also needed

Expert Witness Testimony In Jury Verdicts When Battered Women Kill, Asma Sheikh Apr 2008

Expert Witness Testimony In Jury Verdicts When Battered Women Kill, Asma Sheikh

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this investigation were to (a) explore the relationship between jury verdicts when traumatic brain injury expert testimony is provided and (b) examine the relationship between the verdicts when battered women syndrome expert witness testimony is provided, in Rowan University undergraduate students (N = 100). Students were provided with experimental packets, read a mock legal case, answered four questionnaires, and conducted a mock jury deliberation. Students indicated their verdicts were of lesser severity when there was traumatic brain injury expert witness testimony when compared to battered women syndrome expert witness testimony. Analysis of variance statistics indicated that expert …
