Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Today’s Communication Age has provided people more ability to share and process information. This has much to do with the technological advancements in the latter of the last century such as the telephone, the computer, and the internet. These technologies are a brilliant resource for discovering knowledge about anything, at anytime. Therefore, with all of this information accessible, it whets our appetite for the exploration of the unknown. We are standing at a new threshold of curiosity and movement which is poised for more than idea-sharing over vast distances; we are ready physically to actualize these explorations.

As inquisitive social …

On The Optimality Of The Neighbor-Joining Algorithm, Kord Eickmeyer, Peter Huggins, Lior Pachter, Ruriko Yoshida Apr 2008

On The Optimality Of The Neighbor-Joining Algorithm, Kord Eickmeyer, Peter Huggins, Lior Pachter, Ruriko Yoshida

Statistics Faculty Publications

The popular neighbor-joining (NJ) algorithm used in phylogenetics is a greedy algorithm for finding the balanced minimum evolution (BME) tree associated to a dissimilarity map. From this point of view, NJ is "optimal" when the algorithm outputs the tree which minimizes the balanced minimum evolution criterion. We use the fact that the NJ tree topology and the BME tree topology are determined by polyhedral subdivisions of the spaces of dissimilarity maps R(n2)+ to study the optimality of the neighbor-joining algorithm. In particular, we investigate and compare the polyhedral subdivisions for n ≤ 8. This requires the measurement of volumes of …

Vasilisa Maligina Karya A.M. Kollontai; Sebuah Rekonstruksi Atas Konsep Maskulinitas Rusia, Mina Elfira

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article is a literary analysis on Aleksandra Mikhailovna Kollontai' Vasilisa Maligina (1923) by using a feminist approach. Issues on masculinity are the focus of the analysis. The main argument of this article is that through the main character of this story - Vasilisa Maligina - Kollontai tried to expose the new image of Russian women by reconstructing the concept of Russian traditional masculinity in Russian society under former Uni Soviet communist government based on patriarchal culture.

Intra-Abdominal Pressures During Voluntary And Reflex Cough, W. Robert Addington, Robert Stephens, Michael M. Phelipa, John G. Widdicombe, Robin R. Ockey Apr 2008

Intra-Abdominal Pressures During Voluntary And Reflex Cough, W. Robert Addington, Robert Stephens, Michael M. Phelipa, John G. Widdicombe, Robin R. Ockey

Faculty and Staff Publications

Background: Involuntary coughing such as that evoked from the larynx, the laryngeal cough reflex (LCR), triggers a coordinated contraction of the thoracic, abdominal and pelvic muscles, which increases intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), displaces the diaphragm upwards and generates the expiratory force for cough and airway clearance. Changes in the IAP during voluntary cough (VC) and the LCR can be measured via a pressure catheter in the bladder. This study evaluated the physiological characteristics of IAP generated during VC and the LCR including peak and mean pressures and calculations of the area under the curve (AUC) values during the time of the …
