Supernatural: The Juxtaposition Of Sensuality And The Macabre In Edgar Allen Poe’S Ligeia, Cathy Joyce Clay
Supernatural: The Juxtaposition Of Sensuality And The Macabre In Edgar Allen Poe’S Ligeia, Cathy Joyce Clay
Theses (Pre-2016)
Tentative Title: Supernatural: The Juxtaposition of Sensuality and the Macabre in Edgar Allan Poe's "Ligeia." 2. Objectives: To determine Edgar Allan Poe's purpose for creating the tragic death of a beautiful heroine in order to achieve the metaphysical quality of his work. 3. Status of the Question: Poe has long been renowned for having believed that there is nothing more romantic than the death of a beautiful woman; with that in mind, Poe creates Ligeia, a character whose beauty transcends her morbid death. Whereas Poe pairs the two popular Victorian themes of beauty and death, he appears to do so …
Bioengineering Cartilage Growth, Maturation, And Form, Gregory M. Williams, Stephen M. Klisch, Robert L. Sah
Bioengineering Cartilage Growth, Maturation, And Form, Gregory M. Williams, Stephen M. Klisch, Robert L. Sah
Mechanical Engineering
Cartilage of articular joints grows and matures to achieve characteristic sizes, forms, and functional properties. Through these processes, the tissue not only serves as a template for bone growth but also yields mature articular cartilage providing joints with a low-friction, wear-resistant bearing material. The study of cartilage growth and maturation is a focus of both cartilage biologists and bioengineers with one goal of trying to create biologic tissue substitutes for the repair of damaged joints. Experimental approaches both in vivo and in vitro are being used to better understand the mechanisms and regulation of growth and maturation processes. This knowledge …

Microclimate Conditions Within The Rolled Leaves Of Lepanthes Helleri (Orchidaceae), May 2008, Brian C. Jones
Microclimate Conditions Within The Rolled Leaves Of Lepanthes Helleri (Orchidaceae), May 2008, Brian C. Jones
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Epiphytic orchids of the cloud forest experience wet conditions from the high input of mist, but also drying from the potentially desiccating conditions of wind and light. The ability to minimize water loss while still maintaining photosynthetic levels is pivotal in an individual’s survival. This study examined Lepanthes helleri and the role of leaf-curling as a mechanism to regulate microclimate conditions. Parameters measured included the size of the leaf and the width of its opened curl, relative humidity of the ambient environment, air and temperature inside and outside of the leaf. The relationships between the width of the leaf opening …

Use Of Shade Trees To Reduce Leaf Herbivory Of Coffea Arabica By Atta Cephalotes (Formicidae) On Farms In Cañitas, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, May 2008, Tyler H. Stuart
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The addition of a specific group of rapid-growth shade tree species to coffee in monoculture, or the inclusion of these species in shade-grown coffee, may reduce leaf herbivory by Atta cephalotes. This study was conducted in Cañitas, Costa Rica on three plots—shade-grown, monoculture, and no coffee—within coffee plantations, each of which had a separate A. cephalotes colony. After observing the selection process of the leaf-cutter ants among four non-coffee, shade tree species and two varieties of coffee, Caturra and Katway, results indicated that the ants had no preference(s) of the tested species within any of the tested plots (Shade: K-W …
Preferential Oviposition By Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae) Butterflies On Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae) Leaves With Higher Cyanide Concentrations, May 2008, Phillip Burkholder
Preferential Oviposition By Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae) Butterflies On Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae) Leaves With Higher Cyanide Concentrations, May 2008, Phillip Burkholder
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Passiflora spp. produces cyanogenic glycosides to prevent herbivory. The butterfly subfamily Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae) has broken through this defense with the ability to ingest the cyanogenic compounds. A coevolutionary arms race of adaptations and counter-adaptations followed, in which it is believed that Passiflora spp. evolved a series of counter-adaptive defenses, like egg-mimics, leaf shape, and extrafloral nectarines, to specifically combat heliconiines. While sometimes overcoming these adaptations, heliconiines still consider them for oviposition. Additionally, the role of cyanide may also have an effect on oviposition. It has been suggested that while detrimental to larvae, cyanide provides protection that promotes oviposition. There are …
Health Of The Herd Bull, Russ Daly
Health Of The Herd Bull, Russ Daly
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
The importance of the herd bull to the reproductive performance and profitability of cow herds that utilize natural service cannot be underestimated. Health problems in a bull may result either in decreased fertility in that bull or, in the worst case, in an infectious disease that could spread to the rest of the breeding herd, with disastrous results for herd fertility. For these reasons, the health of incoming and existing herd bulls is of utmost importance.
Accessing Substance Abuse Treatment: Issues For Parents Involved With Child Welfare Services, Anna Rockhill, Beth L. Green, Linda Newton-Curtis
Accessing Substance Abuse Treatment: Issues For Parents Involved With Child Welfare Services, Anna Rockhill, Beth L. Green, Linda Newton-Curtis
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
The complex issues associated with barriers to treatment entry for parents who are involved with child welfare has not been well explored. Accessing timely treatment is now critical for these parents since the introduction of the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997, limiting the time until a permanency decision is made. Using a longitudinal, qualitative approach, substance-abusing parents from 15 families, their relevant family members, and service providers were interviewed approximately every 3 months over an 18-month period. The experiences of these parents add to our knowledge of the unique barriers this population faces, and expands our understanding of …

We conducted experiments on two populations of chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, to determine whether they would take advantage of opportunities to provide food rewards to familiar group members at little cost to themselves. In both of the experiments described here, chimpanzees were able to deliver identical rewards to themselves and to other members of their social groups. We compared the chimpanzees' behaviour when they were paired with another chimpanzee and when they were alone. If chimpanzees are motivated to provide benefits to others, they are expected to consistently deliver rewards to others and to distinguish between the partner-present and partner-absent …
Aquatic Bacteria Removal Using Carbon Nanotubes, Suvish Melanta
Aquatic Bacteria Removal Using Carbon Nanotubes, Suvish Melanta
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this project is to explore the functionality of carbon nanotubes as a bacterial removal method, specifically towards water-borne bacterial pathogens in wastewater by utilizing its unique magnetic and bacteria-binding properties. The general protocol set for this research follows five steps: 1) Preparation of wastewater media, 2) preparation of CNT culture, 3) preparation of reaction mixture with CNTs for bacterial binding, 4) magnetic separation of bacteria-bound-CNT clusters and, 5) assessment of supernatant. The CNTs effectively removed bacterial contaminants in the wastewater (10%, v/v) after the sand filtration process from the Paul R. Noland Wastewater Facility at Fayetteville, Arkansas. …
Computational Modeling Of Oxidative Stress: An Analysis Of Nad (P)H Effects On Nitric Oxide And Superoxide During Hypertension, Aaron Strobel
Computational Modeling Of Oxidative Stress: An Analysis Of Nad (P)H Effects On Nitric Oxide And Superoxide During Hypertension, Aaron Strobel
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Nitric oxide (NO) is inactivated in the human body when exposed to superoxide (O2 -). This reaction forms peroxynitrite (ONOO-). Superoxide is produced in the cardiac system by several different ways, including NAD(P)H oxidase. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) breaks down superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. This prevents superoxide from reacting with nitric oxide and allows normal function to take place. Superoxide and peroxynitrite are main contributors to vascular disease in the human body, in particular hypertension. Experiments have shown that there was an increase of superoxide production in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) vs. age-matched Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) that were …

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
The job shop problem is among the class of NP- hard combinatorial problems. This Research paper addresses the problem of static job shop scheduling on the job-based representation and the rule based representations. The popular search techniques like the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing are used for the determination of the objectives like minimizations of the makespan time and mean flow time. Various rules like the SPT, LPT, MWKR, and LWKR are used for the objective function to attain the results. The summary of results from this paper gives a conclusion that the genetic algorithm gives better results in the …

Kinetics Determination Of Soybean Oil Transesterification In The Design Of A Continuous Biodiesel Production Process, Irwin Jacob, Ed Clausen, Danielle Julie Carrier
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
One-step batch transesterification consisting of three stepwise reversible reactions of pure soybean oil with methanol was conducted at two different mixing speeds (600 and 300 rpm) to produce soybean oil fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel). In both batch reactions, sodium methoxide (1.09 wt% based on soybean oil) was used as the catalyst, the reaction temperature was 60oC, and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio was 6:1. The objectives were to determine and/or investigate: 1) the mechanism and order of the reaction, 2) the reaction rate constants, 3) the effect of changes in mixing intensity on the reaction rate, 4) the comparison of …
The Role Of Medical Diplomacy In Stabilizing Afghanistan, Donald F. Thompson
The Role Of Medical Diplomacy In Stabilizing Afghanistan, Donald F. Thompson
Defense Horizons
Comprehensive stabilization and reconstruction of Afghanistan are not possible given the current fragmentation of responsibilities, narrow lines of authorities, and archaic funding mechanisms. Afghans are supportive of U.S. and international efforts, and there are occasional signs of progress, but the insurgent threat grows as U.S. military and civilian agencies and the international community struggle to bring stability to this volatile region. Integrated security, stabilization, and reconstruction activities must be implemented quickly and efficiently if failure is to be averted. Much more than a course correction is needed to provide tangible benefits to the population, develop effective leadership capacity in the …
Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Ethylene Dibromide And 1,2-Dichloroethane In The Presence Of Fuel Hydrocarbons, James Henderson
Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Ethylene Dibromide And 1,2-Dichloroethane In The Presence Of Fuel Hydrocarbons, James Henderson
All Dissertations
Field evidence from underground storage tank (UST) sites where leaded gasoline leaked indicates the lead scavengers 1,2-dibromoethane (ethylene dibromide, or EDB) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) may be present in groundwater at levels that pose unacceptable risk. These compounds are seldom tested for at UST sites. Although dehalogenation of EDB and 1,2-DCA is known to occur, the effect of fuel hydrocarbons on their biodegradability under anaerobic conditions is poorly understood. Microcosms (2 L glass bottles) were prepared with soil and groundwater from a UST site in Clemson, South Carolina, using samples collected from the source (containing residual fuel) and less contaminated downgradient …

In Vitro And In Vivo Techniques For Screening New Natural Product-Based Fungicides For Control Of Strawberry Anthracnose, Maritza Abril
Dissertations
Seven plant pathogenic fungi (Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum, C. fragariae, C. gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum, Phomopsis obscurans, and P. viticola) valuable in screening fungicide efficacy were tested. Optimal and reproducible conditions for germination of these selected fungi were established by incorporating Roswell Park Memorial Institute 1640 (RPMI) as a medium of known composition and washing conidia to remove innate germination inhibitors. This step reduced average fungal germination times between 3.5 h and 21.2 h. The natural product-based fungicide, sampangine, seven sampangine analogs (4-bromo-sampangine, 4-methoxysampangine, benzo[4,5]sampangine, liriodenine Mel AMC-XIII-103, onychine, cryptolepine, and liriodenine CDH-II-37), plus seven conventional fungicides (benomyl, captan, cyprodinil, fenbuconazole, …
Reverse Recruitment: Activation Of Yeast Genes At The Nuclear Periphery, Terry Marvin Haley
Reverse Recruitment: Activation Of Yeast Genes At The Nuclear Periphery, Terry Marvin Haley
Dissertations
The regulation of genes at the nuclear periphery is an evolutionarily conserved phenomenon in eukaryotes. The reverse-recruitment model of transcriptional activation postulates that genes are activated by moving to and contacting transcription machinery located at subnuclear structures. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae it has been reported that this platform for gene regulation may reside at the nuclear periphery. To test this hypothesis, I utilized a GFP-gene tagging technique, which uses LacI-GFP to visualize a tandem array of its DNA-binding sequence, to monitor localization ofSUC2 and GALL I found that both genes preferentially localized to the nuclear periphery when transcriptionally active. By developing …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymeric Materials Derived From Multifunctional Alkyl A-Hydroxymethylacrylates, Jean-Francois Morizur
Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymeric Materials Derived From Multifunctional Alkyl A-Hydroxymethylacrylates, Jean-Francois Morizur
Dissertations
The research presented in this dissertation covers the investigation of new materials derived from alkyl a-hydroxymethylacrylates (RHMA). The first project exposed in Chapter II involves the synthesis, characterization of RHMA-based reactive surfactants and their successful incorporation in acrylic latexes. The amphiphilic monomers testify of a good copolymerization behavior with other acrylic monomers such as methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate although their extensive bulkiness. They led to the formation of well-defined polymeric particles via a seeded emulsion polymerization process and permitted decreasing significantly the water sensitivity of the resulting films as compared to film incorporating conventional emulsifier such as sodium dodecyl …
Use Of Monoclonal ∆-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Antibodies Chemically Bound To A Polystyrene Surface Using Glutaraldehyde For The Purpose Of Extracting ∆-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol And ∆-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Carboxylic Acid From Postmortem Whole Blood Samples For Analysis By Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, Thomas Sidney Pittman
Dissertations
Quantitations of drugs and their respective metabolites in postmortem blood samples using gas chromatographic instrumentation is a primary analytical practice used to determine if drugs played a role in or were the cause of a victim's death. Postmortem blood samples often prove difficult to work with due to interfering substances formed during the putrefaction process. Attempts to eliminate interfering substances with present day extraction methods can be time-consuming, costly and often ineffective when dealing with drugs that exhibit toxicity or impairment at very low concentrations. This study was conducted using monoclonal antibodies chemically bound to a polystyrene surface to extract …
Continuities And Changes In Marshallese Grandparenting, Laurence Marshall Carucci
Continuities And Changes In Marshallese Grandparenting, Laurence Marshall Carucci
Pacific Studies
For Marshallese, grandparents do not exist as independent types of kin. A grandparent is a partner in a reciprocal grandparent/grandchild relationship. The relationship is not grounded in either biology or unchanging social status; rather, it is constructed out of practical activities as members of a shared community. Grandparents who actively earn respect in their relationships with others are recognized collectively as senior grandparents of the community or communal grandparents. This paper examines continuities and changes in the activities and social significance of grandparents of the community across three decades and four different social settings. The paper focuses on how shifting …

Tasting Phenylthiocarbamide (Ptc): A New Integrative Genetics Lab With An Old Flavor, Robert B. Merritt, Lou Ann Bierwert, Barton Slatko, Michael P. Weiner, Jessica Ingram, Kristianna Sciarra, Evan Weiner
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
First reported in the early 1930s, variation in the ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) has since become one of the most widely studied of all human genetic traits. Guo and Reed (2001) provide an excellent review of work on this polymorphism prior to the identification and sequencing of the PTC gene by Kim et al. (2003), and Wooding (2006) provides a stimulating historical review of the role various scientists have played in the study of PTC taste sensitivity and the importance of these studies in relation to natural selection. Identification of the PTC gene and a number of subsequent …

Learning Style Influence On Relationship Sales Success, Betty A. Moon
Student Scholarship
This research seeks to explore the use of Kolb's experiential learning theory as a framework for understanding salesperson success in relationship selling. Augmenting previous research, we investigate the influence of advisor learning styles and advisor adaptive flexibility on sales performance. Building on David Kolb's (Kolb, 1976, 1977, 1985) and Richard Boyatzis' (Boyatzis & Kolb, 1993) previous experiential learning research, we selected the Learning Style Inventory and Adaptive Style Inventory as the instruments to gather this data. The results of this research suggest that relationship sales success is influenced by flexibility, regardless of learning style preference.

Much of what is currently known about GPCR structure was based on X-ray crystallographic measurements of rhodopsin. Furthermore, due to its inexpensiveness and the availability of simple methods to purify it in large quantities from cow eyes, bovine rhodopsin has been successfully used in obtaining diffraction-quality three-dimensional crystals. In our experiment, the bovine rhodopsin protein was cloned into the commercially available E. coli expression plasmid, pBAD TOPO®, using forward and reverse PCR primers designed in our lab. Plasmid DNA from these cells was purified in order to analyze the direction of the inserted gene. The purified plasmid DNA …
The Role Of Fibroblast Growth Factor 20a In The Craniofacial Development Of Zebrafish, Julie Adams
The Role Of Fibroblast Growth Factor 20a In The Craniofacial Development Of Zebrafish, Julie Adams
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Fibroblast growth factors are a family of intercellular signaling molecules that participate in the normal growth of the craniofacial skeleton. Advances in molecular genetics have revealed that fibroblast growth factors are involved in the regulation of bone growth by maintaining a balance between the differentiation of osteoblasts and the proliferation of mesenchyme (Morriss-Kay and Wilkie, 2005). The focus of my research is fibroblast growth factor 20a because it seems to play a significant role in the normal development of the skull. At birth, the skull is made up of bony elements, that meet at fibrous membranes called sutures. Throughout development, …

The Effect Of Computer-Based Biofeedback On Creativity, Qin Li
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
In recent decades, Psychology has advance empirical studies of creativity, aiming for a better and more concrete understanding of this elusive topic. One branch of these studies investigates creativity’s physiological manifestation in an attempt to isolate underlying neurophysiologic mechanisms involved in creative thinking. These studies, through EEG recording of electrical brain activity, indicated that highly creative individuals tend to express a low arousal state as compared to less creative individuals. This experiment investigates the relationship between induced low arousal and creativity. A computer-based biofeedback game is used to induce low arousal. A multivariate analysis of our data revealed no significant …
