We report an unusual presentation of rhinosporidiosis as an urethral polyp, which is only the second case of rhinosporidiosis reported from Pakistan.

Hydrologic And Water Quality Assessment Of Miller Run: A Study Of Bucknell University’S Impact, Alison C. Schaffer May 2008

Hydrologic And Water Quality Assessment Of Miller Run: A Study Of Bucknell University’S Impact, Alison C. Schaffer

Honors Theses

Human development causes degradation of stream ecosystems due to impacts on channel morphology, hydrology, and water quality. Urbanization, the second leading cause of stream impairment, increases the amount of impervious surface cover, thus reducing infiltration and increasing surface runoff of precipitation, which ultimately affects stream hydrologic process and aquatic biodiversity. The main objective of this study was to assess the overall health of Miller Run, a small tributary of the Bull Run and Susquehanna River watersheds, through an integrative hydrologic and water quality approach in order to determine the degree of Bucknell University’s impact on the stream. Hydrologic conditions, including …

Eating Disorders: A Study Of University Type And Prevalence, Emily C. Riggins

Senior Honors Theses

Disordered eating has become an increasing problem, especially in western culture. A study was conducted to determine a possible relationship between disordered eating among college students and type of university. Previous studies allude to the possibility of private evangelical colleges yielding more eating disorders than private non-evangelical and public colleges. College students at two east coast universities were compared on the Eating Attitudes Test and a demographic questionnaire. The research indicated that prevalence of eating disorders is not significantly different between private evangelical institutions and private non-evangelical institutions. The findings show some background, prevalence, causes, and theoretical explanation of eating …

Response Of The Salt Gland Of The Insectivorous Lizard Novoeumeces Schneideri To Ionic And Osmotic Challenges, Claudia Lechuga May 2008

Response Of The Salt Gland Of The Insectivorous Lizard Novoeumeces Schneideri To Ionic And Osmotic Challenges, Claudia Lechuga

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The reptilian kidney can only produce isoosmotic waste. To supplement renal ion excretion and maintain ionic and osmoregulation, some reptile species rely on extrarenal salt glands that can secrete a hyperosmotic solution. Extrarenal glands among reptile taxa include the cranial gland in lizards, lacrimal gland of marine turtles, and sublingual gland of the estuarine crocodile and sea snakes. Secretion composition varies among these taxa, depending on diet, osmotic load and phylogeny. The salt glands of lizards are unique among reptiles in their ability to vary composition of the secreted fluid, secreting cations (potassium and/or sodium) and anions (chloride and/or bicarbonate). …

Variational Methods For Shape And Image Registrations., Rachid Fahmi 1971- May 2008

Variational Methods For Shape And Image Registrations., Rachid Fahmi 1971-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Estimating and analysis of deformation, either rigid or non-rigid, is an active area of research in various medical imaging and computer vision applications. Its importance stems from the inherent inter- and intra-variability in biological and biomedical object shapes and from the dynamic nature of the scenes usually dealt with in computer vision research. For instance, quantifying the growth of a tumor, recognizing a person's face, tracking a facial expression, or retrieving an object inside a data base require the estimation of some sort of motion or deformation undergone by the object of interest. To solve these problems, and other similar …

Hypochlorous Acid Mediated Damage Of Chromatin, Joseph Insugn Kang May 2008

Hypochlorous Acid Mediated Damage Of Chromatin, Joseph Insugn Kang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl), the primary product of activated neutrophils at sites of inflammation, can damage both DNA and associated histone proteins. HOCl damage to cytosine bases in DNA generates the chlorination damage products 5-chlorocytosine (ClC) and 5-chlorouracil (ClU) as well as the oxidation damage products 5- hydroxycytosine (HOC) and 5-hydroxyuracil (HOU). Histone damage by HOCl can be measured by quantitation of 3-chlorotyrosine and 3,5-dichlorotyrosine, stable and unique markers of protein damage caused by HOCl. The studies presented here investigate how and where these damage products occur and what implications they might have in the correlation between chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis. …

ETSU Faculty Works

Previous findings from this laboratory demonstrating changes in dopamine (DA) transporter and D2 receptors in the amygdaloid complex of subjects with major depression indicate that disruption of dopamine neurotransmission to the amygdala may contribute to behavioral symptoms associated with depression. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR was used to investigate the regional distribution of gene expression of DA receptors in the human amygdala. In addition, relative levels of mRNA of DA receptors in the basal amygdaloid nucleus were measured postmortem in subjects with major depression and normal control subjects. All five subtypes of DA receptor mRNA were detected in all amygdaloid subnuclei, although …

Deporting "Red Emma" : The Political And Legal Battles For Citizenship, 1917-1921, Kara D. Schultz May 2008

Deporting "Red Emma" : The Political And Legal Battles For Citizenship, 1917-1921, Kara D. Schultz

Honors Theses

As Americans worked to construct a national creed in the early nineteenth century, xenophobia and cultural exceptionalism were in constant tension with conceptions of free speech and personal liberty. The emergence of deportation as the solution to America's "radical problem" was built upon representations of the political subversive that had little grounding in reality. The differing ideologies and organizations of the anarchist and communist movements in America were constantly being reshaped, yet ... the press and political rhetoric blurred distinctions between parties, assuming that both philosophies were elements of the same menace that sought violent overthrow of the government. Reducing …

Spatial Modeling Of Propagule Pressure In Ailanthus Altissima, Matthew A. Kaproth May 2008

Spatial Modeling Of Propagule Pressure In Ailanthus Altissima, Matthew A. Kaproth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ailanthus altissima (tree of heaven) is a non-native invasive tree spreading within central Appalachia. This dioecious, deciduous, and allelopathic species copiously produces samaras, capable of traveling at least 200 m through primary wind-dispersal. Removal of A. altissima individuals prior to timbering and other forest disturbances may help prevent spread into forest interiors. To aid in species management, this study investigated the use of remote sensing to identify the location and abundance of samaras in mixed mesophytic forests through supervised classifications. From empirical measurements, the estimated number of seeds per classified unit area was determined and the relationship between quantified propagule …

Application Of The Biolog Microplate System To Monitor The Physiological Response Of Heat-Stressed Bacteria, Matthew G. Mccarroll May 2008

Application Of The Biolog Microplate System To Monitor The Physiological Response Of Heat-Stressed Bacteria, Matthew G. Mccarroll

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The BIOLOG microplate system was originally evaluated by Miller and Rhoden (1991) for its ability to correctly identify clinical and environmental isolates. The system determines identity based on the exchange of electrons produced during utilization of a carbon substrate and subsequent respiration, leading to the reduction of a tetrazolium-based color change. Enteric bacteria ( Escherichia coli, Enterobacter sakazakii, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium) were exposed to heat stress (52°C) and samples were removed as a function of time (0, 15, 30 and 90 min). Stressed cells were monitored with traditional viable cell counts and inoculated into BIOLOG GN plates. The …

Putative Role Of Palmitate And Akt Signaling In Attenuating Skeletal Muscle Growth In The Obese Zucker Rat, Jonathan Michael Peterson May 2008

Putative Role Of Palmitate And Akt Signaling In Attenuating Skeletal Muscle Growth In The Obese Zucker Rat, Jonathan Michael Peterson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Obese zucker rat (OZR) is a model of obesity and metabolic syndrome, with a reduced skeletal muscle mass compared with the lean zucker rat (LZR). Growth and hypertrophy of muscle fibers critically depend on activation and differentiation of satellite cells into new myonuclei, as well as the prevention of myonuclear apoptosis. Akt is known to regulate satellite cell activation and differentiation and inhibit apoptotic signaling. Akt activity is also reduced in the OZR compared to the LZR. The present study had two primary purposes; first, to observe, in vitro, the effects of the saturated free fatty acid palmitate on …

Two Conceptions Of Irreversible Environmental Harm, Cass R. Sunstein May 2008

Two Conceptions Of Irreversible Environmental Harm, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The concept of "irreversibility" plays a large role in the theory and practice of environmental protection. Indeed, the concept is explicit in some statements of the Precautionary Principle. But the idea of irreversibility remains poorly defined. Because time is linear, any loss is, in a sense, irreversible. On one approach, drawn from environmental economics, irreversibility might be understood as a reference to the value associated with taking precautionary steps that maintain flexibility for an uncertain future ("option value"). On another approach, drawn from environmental ethics, irreversibility might be understood to refer to the qualitatively distinctive nature of certain environmental harms—a …

The Devil’S Calculus: Mathematical Models Of Civil War, Ajay Shenoy May 2008

The Devil’S Calculus: Mathematical Models Of Civil War, Ajay Shenoy

Honors Scholar Theses

In spite of the movement to turn political science into a real science, various mathematical methods that are now the staples of physics, biology, and even economics are thoroughly uncommon in political science, especially the study of civil war. This study seeks to apply such methods - specifically, ordinary differential equations (ODEs) - to model civil war based on what one might dub the capabilities school of thought, which roughly states that civil wars end only when one side’s ability to make war falls far enough to make peace truly attractive. I construct several different ODE-based models and then test …

Performance on the Sternberg working memory task, and MEG cortical response on a variation of the Sternberg task were examined in middle-aged carriers and non-carriers of the APOE ε4 allele. Physical activity was also assessed to examine whether exercise level modifies the relationship between APOE genotype and neurocognitive function. Regression revealed that high physical activity was associated with faster RT in the six- and eight-letter conditions of the Sternberg in ε4 carriers, but not in the non-carriers after controlling for age, gender, and education (N = 54). Furthermore, the MEG analysis revealed that sedentary ε4 carriers exhibited lower right temporal …

Development Of Methods To Evaluate Susceptibility Of Soybean Aphid To Imidacloprid And Thiamethoxam At Lethal And Sublethal Concentrations, Leonardo C. Magalhaes, Thomas E. Hunt, Blair D. Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphididae), is a recent introduction (2000) from Asia and has become a serious soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. (Fabaceae)] pest in North America. Seed treatments using the neonicotinoid insecticides, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, have been suggested as a method of control, and the use of these insecticides is becoming widespread. As a consequence, there is increased potential to select for resistance to these compounds. In the case of soybean aphids, baseline susceptibility to neonicotinoid insecticides and standardized methods for bioassay are lacking. A bioassay technique that uses excised soybean leaves immersed in an …

Graph Connectivity, Partial Words, And A Theorem Of Fine And Wilf, F. Blanchet-Sadri, Deepak Bal, Gautam Sisodia

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The problem of computing periods in words, or finite sequences of symbols from a finite alphabet, has important applications in several areas including data compression, string searching and pattern matching algorithms. The notion of period of a word is central in combinatorics on words. There are many fundamental results on periods of words. Among them is the well known and basic periodicity result of Fine and Wilf which intuitively determines how far two periodic events have to match in order to guarantee a common period. More precisely, any word with length at least p + q - gcd (p, q) …
