An Investigation Of The Relationships Between The Scoring Rubrics Inventory And The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory As Reported By Secondary School Core-Subject Teachers, Paula Marie Pucheu May 2008

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between The Scoring Rubrics Inventory And The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory As Reported By Secondary School Core-Subject Teachers, Paula Marie Pucheu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The promise of increased student achievement through educational reform is delivered still-born if teachers do not know how to implement complex instructional practices and sophisticated analysis of student performance. Metacognitive awareness is crucial to the adoption and application of proven educational initiatives. Teachers who successfully implement criterion-referenced assessment instruction, scoring rubrics, transfer to their students the metacognitive knowledge and skills of how to learn. This study is predicated on the research assumptions that metacognition and its attendant skills are critical to the successful implementation of scoring rubrics. A researcher-developed instrument, the Scoring Rubrics Inventory (SRI) and the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory …

Fan With Guitar, Jeremy Tuman May 2008

Fan With Guitar, Jeremy Tuman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Fan with Guitar is a collection of ten personal, nonfiction essays written between 2005 and 2008. The theme that connects them is music. The essays all explore, to some degree, the significance of music in our lives, the value we place on it, and the trials and merits of a life dedicated to music. The majority of the essays deal with the author's experiences traveling and performing with a musical group, thus also functioning as travel essays. Two essays address the role of the fan, and two others concern the idea of community and touch on how music plays a …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Nanoparticles For Use As Photocatalytic Probes And Radiotracers, Anindya Pradhan May 2008

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Nanoparticles For Use As Photocatalytic Probes And Radiotracers, Anindya Pradhan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Two novel synthetic routes to formation of gold-magnetite nanoparticles have been designed. Treatment of preformed magnetite nanoparticles with ultrasound in aqueous media with dissolved tetrachloroauric acid resulted in the formation of gold-magnetite nanocomposite materials. The other route involved irradiation of preformed magnetite nanoparticles by UV light in aqueous media with dissolved tetrachloroauric acid. This method resulted in the formation of gold-magnetite nanocomposite materials. These materials maintained the morphology of the original magnetite particles. The morphology of the gold particles could be controlled by adjusting experimental parameters, like addition of small amounts of solvent modifiers such as methanol, diethylene glycol, and …

Postures, Natalie Sciortino

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In our present image-laden environment that only seems to keep growing, the nature of how we see and interpret this visual information becomes highly relevant for me in my art. Spectacle, nostalgia, notions of portraiture, theatricality and other visual reflections of our present culture industry, are all elements that I address in my work. It is with these ideas in mind that I construct visual fields where disparate forms and images coexist, forming new narratives aside from their individual isolated implications; incorporating art production methods that construct an evolving dichotomy that contains a sense of play, tension, and irony while …

Synthesis Of Well-Defined N-Heterocyclic Carbene (Nhc) Complexes Of Late Transition Metals, Pierre De Fremont May 2008

Synthesis Of Well-Defined N-Heterocyclic Carbene (Nhc) Complexes Of Late Transition Metals, Pierre De Fremont

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as appropriate replacements for phosphines to synthesized highly active metal complexes in homogeneous catalysis. The advantages of NHCs over phosphines include ease of handling, minimal toxicity and powerful electron donating properties. They bind transition metals with no need of back-donation and yield complexes with enhanced stability. The ability of NHCs to bind all metals from the periodic table, in low and high oxidation states, creates an unprecedented opportunity for the design of new complexes. This dissertation is dedicated to the synthesis of well-defined organosilver and organogold complexes bearing NHC ligands. In addition, two short chapters …

Post-Translational Regulation Of Plant Fatty Acid Desaturases As Expressed In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Linda Bourassa May 2008

Post-Translational Regulation Of Plant Fatty Acid Desaturases As Expressed In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Linda Bourassa

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Differences have been shown in the steady-state accumulation and half-lives between Brassica FAD3 (BF3) and tung FAD3 (TF3) proteins expressed in yeast cells cultured at 30°C. TF3 has a greater steady-state accumulation and longer half-life than BF3. These differences are attributed to post-translational modification and have been shown to be controlled by an Nterminal element. I attempted to determine specific amino acids important for regulation, and further characterize the mechanism contributing to the differences. Through site-directed mutagenesis, it was shown that replacing lysine residues with asparagines in the BF3 and TF3 Ntermini increased protein stability, while replacing an asparagine with …

An Optimal Interset Rest Period For Strength Recovery During A Common Isokinetic Test, Ivan Blazquez May 2008

An Optimal Interset Rest Period For Strength Recovery During A Common Isokinetic Test, Ivan Blazquez

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Isokinetic testing is used in rehabilitation settings on a regular basis, yet there is a lack of consistency in rest period usage among protocols. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish an optimal rest period that would allow reproducibility of strength during a common isokinetic strength-test. Methods: Twentyseven healthy college-aged males underwent isokinetic strength testing to determine peak torque at 60, 180 and 300 deg/sec, respectively. Work:rest ratios of 1:3, 1:8 and 1:12 were counterbalanced between sets. A 3 X 3 repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the data. The p < .05 level of significance was used for all tests. Results: There was no significant difference in either knee extension or knee flexion peak torque when comparing work:rest ratios. Conclusion: These findings suggest that a 1:3 work:rest ratio is sufficient during a common isokinetic strength test.

Computational Intelligence And Complexity Measures For Chaotic Information Processing, Davoud Arasteh May 2008

Computational Intelligence And Complexity Measures For Chaotic Information Processing, Davoud Arasteh

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the application of computational intelligence methods in the analysis of nonlinear chaotic systems in the framework of many known and newly designed complex systems. Parallel comparisons are made between these methods. This provides insight into the difficult challenges facing nonlinear systems characterization and aids in developing a generalized algorithm in computing algorithmic complexity measures, Lyapunov exponents, information dimension and topological entropy. These metrics are implemented to characterize the dynamic patterns of discrete and continuous systems. These metrics make it possible to distinguish order from disorder in these systems. Steps required for computing Lyapunov exponents with a reorthonormalization …

The Effects Of The Invasive Exotic Chinese Tallow Tree (Triadica Sebifera) On Amphibians And Aquatic Invertebrates, Norman Leonard May 2008

The Effects Of The Invasive Exotic Chinese Tallow Tree (Triadica Sebifera) On Amphibians And Aquatic Invertebrates, Norman Leonard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the question of how leaf litter from trees affects animals that live in aquatic environments, with an emphasis on the effect of Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera) leaf litter on anuran larvae (i.e., frog tadpoles). This question is important to our understanding of how allochthonous inputs to aquatic habitats drive biodiversity in wetlands. It also addresses a timely conservation concern in southeastern Louisiana where invasion by Chinese tallow trees (Triadica sebifera) is displacing native trees. The invasion process is homogenizing forest composition and changing the quantity and quality of litter inputs to ponds from those produced by a …

Interaction Effects In Nickel Nanowires Arrays, Ovidiu Cezar Trusca May 2008

Interaction Effects In Nickel Nanowires Arrays, Ovidiu Cezar Trusca

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Systems of magnetic nanowires are considered strong candidates in many technological applications as microwave filters, sensors or devices for data storage. Because of their strong potential as candidates in such applications they became lately the object of many studies. However, due to the very complicated nature of the interwire interactions, their magnetic behavior is very difficult to be interpreted. The main parameter controlling the response of magnetic nanowires assemblies is the aspect ratio of the nanowires that is defined as the ratio of the length to the wire's diameter. In our study we choose to modify the aspect ratio by …

Water Quality Modeling Of Freshwater Diversions In The Pontchartrain Estuary, Rachel Roblin May 2008

Water Quality Modeling Of Freshwater Diversions In The Pontchartrain Estuary, Rachel Roblin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A 1-D tidal, salinity and water quality model that analyzes the general effects freshwater diversions have on the water quality of the Pontchartrain Estuary over a 17-year period is presented here. Using the modeled live algae concentrations in conjunction with the algal bloom probability model results produces an accurate prediction of algal bloom occurrences between 1990 and 2006. The model predicts that the addition of freshwater diversions into Maurepas swamp and increases to flow in the Bonnet Carré Spillway may cause more intense and frequent algal blooms to occur around the Pontchartrain Estuary. The model also predicts that high nutrient …

Late Neogene Uplift Of The Fairweather Ground On The Basis Of Bathymetric And Seismic Data From The Gulf Of Alaska, Peter David Guarisco Iv May 2008

Late Neogene Uplift Of The Fairweather Ground On The Basis Of Bathymetric And Seismic Data From The Gulf Of Alaska, Peter David Guarisco Iv

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Pliocene to Pleistocene glacial-marine deposits adjacent to the Fairweather Ground basement in the Gulf of Alaska are the focus for seismic interpretation using public domain seismic reflection data. The late Tertiary and early Quaternary sections of the Yakataga Formation record a glacial/ interglacial climate change sequence with increasing rates of sedimentation (175 meters per million years to 4000 meters per million years). The foreland basin sediment load is deposited onto the Yakutat block, a microplate that takes up the strike-slip to convergent movement with respect to North America and Pacific plates. Tectonic activity during the last 5 million years has …

Improving The Accuracy Of Historic Satellite Image Classification By Combining Low-Resolution Multispectral Data With High-Resolution Panchromatic Data, Daniel J. Getman, Jonathan M. Harbor, Chris J. Johannsen, Bernard A. Engel, Goufan Shao May 2008

Improving The Accuracy Of Historic Satellite Image Classification By Combining Low-Resolution Multispectral Data With High-Resolution Panchromatic Data, Daniel J. Getman, Jonathan M. Harbor, Chris J. Johannsen, Bernard A. Engel, Goufan Shao

Journal of Terrestrial Observation

Many attempts to observe changes in terrestrial systems over time would be significantly enhanced if it were possible to improve the accuracy of classifications of low-resolution historic satellite data. In an effort to examine improving the accuracy of historic satellite image classification by combining satellite and air photo data, two experiments were undertaken in which low-resolution multispectral data and high-resolution panchromatic data were combined and then classified using the ECHO spectral-spatial image classification algorithm and the Maximum Likelihood technique. The multispectral data consisted of 6 multispectral channels (30-meter pixel resolution) from Landsat 7. These data were augmented with panchromatic data …

Recognizing Patterns Within Cropland Vegetation: A Crop Anomaly Classification System, Paul G. Carter, Christian J. Johannsen, Bernard A. Engel May 2008

Recognizing Patterns Within Cropland Vegetation: A Crop Anomaly Classification System, Paul G. Carter, Christian J. Johannsen, Bernard A. Engel

Journal of Terrestrial Observation

The framework for a national classification system for agricultural cropland anomalies utilizing remote sensing information is presented. Cropland anomalies in Midwest USA have been identified in field crops of corn (Zea mays), soybeans (Glycine max), wheat (Triticum), and miscellaneous hay crops such as alfalfa (Medicago sativa). By identifying cropland anomalies through ground observations and describing the characteristics associated with them, it is possible to group them according to common casual properties such as water, nutrition, weeds, insects, disease, and management, leading to the development of a Cropland Anomaly Classification System. This system advances understanding of specific anomalies and provides an …

Chemisorption Of Oxygen Onto Activated Carbon Can Enhance The Stability Of Biological Perchlorate Reduction In Fixed Bed Biofilm Reactors, Young Chul Choi, Xu Li, Lutgarde Raskin, Eberhard Morgenroth

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Fixed bed biofilm reactors with granular activated carbon (GAC) or glass beads as support media were used to evaluate the influence of short-term (12 h) and long-term (23 days) increases of influent dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations on biological perchlorate removal. The goal was to evaluate the extent by which chemisorption of oxygen to GAC can enhance the stability of biological perchlorate reduction. Baseline influent concentrations were 50 μg/L of perchlorate, 2 mg/L of acetate as C, and 1 mg/L of DO. Perchlorate removal in the glass bead reactor seized immediately after increasing influent DO concentrations from 1 to 4 mg/L …

An Inescapable Truth: Finance Is Gambling, James G. Lainas May 2008

An Inescapable Truth: Finance Is Gambling, James G. Lainas

Honors College Theses

Finance and gambling have more than just superficial commonalities. Various aspects of business possess similar underlying principles and characteristics to certain forms of gambling, especially poker. People exhibit similar psychological patterns of behavior in both settings. These results are significant because investors, as well as gamblers, are drastically and detrimentally affected by the illusion of control. The market cannot be controlled and neither can a deck of cards. Exploring the compatible strategies between gambling and investing has the potential to make business students better equipped investors in the future.

Sticking It To The Man By Standing By Your Man: Social Support As An Act Of Resistance , Andrew Middleton Wallace May 2008

Sticking It To The Man By Standing By Your Man: Social Support As An Act Of Resistance , Andrew Middleton Wallace

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to synthesize literatures on stress, social support, symbolic interaction, and de Certeau as they pertain to the recovery of a homosexually-identified individual from a homophobic interaction. A model of the initial stressful interaction as well as the interaction between a homosexually-identified individual and his socially-supportive network is posited with the consumption of culturally-disseminated roles and the salience of role-identities as the mechanisms by which it works. The model is then considered as a form of resistance in the light of broader gay liberation social movements. The study focuses on white, middle-class, American, homosexually-identified males …

A Social Network Analysis Of Occupational Segregation, Marco J. Van Der Leij, I. Sebastian Buhai May 2008

A Social Network Analysis Of Occupational Segregation, Marco J. Van Der Leij, I. Sebastian Buhai

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We develop a social network model of occupational segregation between different social groups, generated by the existence of positive inbreeding bias among individuals from the same group. If network referrals are important for job search, then expected homophily in the contact network structure induces different career choices for individuals from different social groups. This further translates into stable occupational segregation equilibria in the labor market. We derive the conditions for wage and unemployment inequality in the segregation equilibria and characterize first and second best social welfare optima. Surprisingly, we find that socially optimal policies involve segregation.
