Corruption And Political Interest: Empirical Evidence At The Micro Level, Benno Torgler, Bin Dong May 2008

Corruption And Political Interest: Empirical Evidence At The Micro Level, Benno Torgler, Bin Dong

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The topic of corruption has recently attracted a great deal of attention, yet there is still a lack of micro level empirical evidence regarding the determinants of corruption. Furthermore, the present literature has not investigated the effects of political interest on corruption despite the interesting potential of this link. We address these deficiencies by analyzing a cross-section of individuals, using the World Values Survey. We explore the determinants of corruption through two dependent variables (perceived corruption and the justifiability of corruption). The impact of political interest on corruption is explored through three different proxies, presenting empirical evidence at both the …

The Environmental Kuznets Curve From Multiple Perspectives, William K. Jaeger, Van Kolpin May 2008

The Environmental Kuznets Curve From Multiple Perspectives, William K. Jaeger, Van Kolpin

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The analysis finds that in addition to U-shaped paths of environmental quality arising for growth in income per capita, growth in population can also produce socially efficient patterns that are U-shaped. Sufficient conditions for both types of paths are identified for a range of models and parameters, including symmetrical models with homothetic, constant-returns functions such as with CES functions. Similar results are also shown to arise in decentralized economies under either homogeneous or heterogeneous income levels.

Transient Elevation Of Corticosterone Alters Begging Behavior And Growth Of White-Crowned Sparrow Nestlings, Haruka Wada, Creagh W. Breuner May 2008

Transient Elevation Of Corticosterone Alters Begging Behavior And Growth Of White-Crowned Sparrow Nestlings, Haruka Wada, Creagh W. Breuner

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Developing animals may face a cost–benefit tradeoff during growth mediated through hormones such as glucocorticoids, as the hormone is essential for development but can have detrimental consequences. To investigate potential tradeoffs caused by brief, moderate elevations of corticosterone in avian young, we artificially elevated the hormone levels in two ways: feeding corticosterone-containing worms and applying corticosterone dermal patches. The former experiment tested the effects of an acute corticosterone elevation (25 min) on begging behavior, whereas the latter explored the effects of artificially elevated corticosterone for 24 to 48 h on growth. Corticosterone altered both begging behavior and growth of white-crowned …

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

This year represents the thirteenth year of annual multidisciplinary conferences dedicated to student scholarship at Central Washington University. In 1996, CWU sponsored the first Undergraduate Research Symposium, a showcase of faculty-mentored undergraduate student research. This event was an innovative forum for developing student scholarship that gained attention far beyond CWU. Since 1996, the undergraduate symposium expanded to include other student scholarly activity, and the broader scope was reflected in a new name in 1998, the Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression, commonly referred to as SOURCE.

Attitudes Toward Women's Roles: A Study Of Selected Undergraduate Students At Rowan University, Alicia M. Groatman May 2008

Attitudes Toward Women's Roles: A Study Of Selected Undergraduate Students At Rowan University, Alicia M. Groatman

Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of this study was to look at students' attitudes toward women's roles of 381 selected undergraduate female and male students at Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ, in March, 2008. Also investigated was the impact of demographic factors such as age, class level, class status, major, gender and race. The data on the attitudes toward women's roles was collected using a 25 item Likert-scale survey. The data analysis suggests that the selected students had a profeminist, egalitarian attitude rather than a traditional, conservative attitude. There was a moderate correlation between the gender of the students and their attitudes toward …

A Set Of Phosphatase-Inert “Molecular Rulers” To Probe For Bivalent Mannose 6-Phosphate Ligand-Receptor Interactions, Xiang Fei, Christopher M. Connelly, Richard G. Macdonald, David B. Berkowitz May 2008

A Set Of Phosphatase-Inert “Molecular Rulers” To Probe For Bivalent Mannose 6-Phosphate Ligand-Receptor Interactions, Xiang Fei, Christopher M. Connelly, Richard G. Macdonald, David B. Berkowitz

David Berkowitz Publications

A set of bivalent mannose 6-phosphonate “molecular rulers” has been synthesized to examine ligand binding to the M6P/IGF2R. The set is estimated to span a P-P distance range of 16–26 Å (MMFF energy minimization on the hydrated phosphonates). Key synthetic transformations include sugar triflate displacement for phosphonate installation and Grubbs I cross-metathesis to achieve bivalency. Relative binding affinities were tested by radioligand displacement assays versus PMP-BSA (pentamannose phosphate-bovine serum albumin). These compounds exhibit slightly higher binding affinities for the receptor (IC50’s = 3.7–5 μM) than the parent, monomeric mannose 6-phosphonate ligand and M6P itself (IC50 = 11.5 ± …

Evidence In The Carotenoid Biosynthetic Pathway For Variation In Evolutionary Rates, Stephanie A. Anderson May 2008

Evidence In The Carotenoid Biosynthetic Pathway For Variation In Evolutionary Rates, Stephanie A. Anderson

Biology Honors Theses

Many cellular reactions occur in linear metabolic pathways where gene products act sequentially to produce needed compounds. The interrelationships between the products of these loci raises the question of whether they evolve in concert or independently. Previous research addressing this question indicated that in the anthocyanin pathway, which produces important secondary metabolites in plants, the genes encoding downstream enzymes show an accelerated rate of evolution when compared to upstream loci. The hypothesized cause of these differences has been attributed to relaxed selective constraint. This pattern and process has not, however, been tested in other systems. The carotenoid biosynthetic pathway, which …

388 A Structure Of Cytoplasmic Polyhedrosis Virus By Cryo-Electron Microscopy, Xuekui Yu, Lei Jin, Z Hong Zhou

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV) is unique within the Reoviridae family in having a turreted single-layer capsid contained within polyhedrin inclusion bodies, yet being fully capable of cell entry and endogenous RNA transcription. Biochemical data have shown that the amino-terminal 79 residues of the CPV turret protein (TP) is sufficient to bring CPV or engineered proteins into the polyhedrin matrix for micro-encapsulation. Here we report the three-dimensional structure of CPV at 3.88 A resolution using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy. Our map clearly shows the turns and deep grooves of alpha-helices, the strand separation in beta-sheets, and densities for loops and many bulky …

Habitat Selection By A Rare Forest Antelope: A Multi-Scale Approach Combining Field Data And Imagery From Three Sensors, Lyndon Estes, G. S. Okin, A. G. Mwangi, H. H. Shugart May 2008

Habitat Selection By A Rare Forest Antelope: A Multi-Scale Approach Combining Field Data And Imagery From Three Sensors, Lyndon Estes, G. S. Okin, A. G. Mwangi, H. H. Shugart

Geography

It can be difficult to further scientific understanding of rare or endangered species that live in inaccessible habitat using traditional methods, such as probabilistic modeling based on field data collection. Remote sensing (RS) can be an important source of information for the study of these animals. A key advantage of RS is its ability to provide information over an animal's complete range, but models incorporating RS data are limited by RS's ability to detect important habitat features. In this study, we focus on the rare, poorly-understood mountain bongo antelope (Tragelaphus euryceros isaaci) which survives in the wild in isolated pockets …

Energization-Dependent Endogenous Activation Of Proton Conductance In Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria., Nadeene Parker, Charles Affourtit, Antonio Vidal-Puig, Martin D. Brand May 2008

Energization-Dependent Endogenous Activation Of Proton Conductance In Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria., Nadeene Parker, Charles Affourtit, Antonio Vidal-Puig, Martin D. Brand

School of Biomedical Sciences

Leak of protons into the mitochondrial matrix during substrate oxidation partially uncouples electron transport from phosphorylation of ADP, but the functions and source of basal and inducible proton leak in vivo remain controversial. In the present study we describe an endogenous activation of proton conductance in mitochondria isolated from rat and mouse skeletal muscle following addition of respiratory substrate. This endogenous activation increased with time, required a high membrane potential and was diminished by high concentrations of serum albumin. Inhibition of this endogenous activation by GDP [classically considered specific for UCPs (uncoupling proteins)], carboxyatractylate and bongkrekate (considered specific for the …

Stability And Success Of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, Michael Finus, Pedro Pintassilgo, Marko Lindroos, Gordon Munro May 2008

Stability And Success Of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, Michael Finus, Pedro Pintassilgo, Marko Lindroos, Gordon Munro

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

According to international law, straddling fish stocks should preferably be managed cooperatively through regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs). This paper analyzes the stability and success of these organizations through a game in partition function form based on the classical Gordon-Schaefer bioeconomic model. A comprehensive analysis of the economic and biological fundamentals that influence the success of coalition formation is provided. The results show that the larger the number of fishing states that compete for the fish stock the higher would be the relative gains from full cooperation, but the lower is the likelihood of large RFMOs being stable. It is …

Owens Peak lies at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada within the Bureau of Land Management’s Owens Peak Wilderness Area in Kern County, California. The study site, ca. 50 square miles, encompasses Owens Peak’s eastern watershed, and ranges in elevation from 800–2600 m (2600–8400 ft). Granite rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith underlie the study area. The eastern watershed of Owens Peak is botanically diverse, with 64 families, 230 genera, and 440 taxa currently documented. Floristic elements within the study area include the southern Sierra Nevada, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert. The flora previously was poorly documented, as discovered …

Cantua Dendritica (Polemoniaceae), A New Species From Peru, And Two New Cantua Names, J. Mark Porter, L. Alan Prather May 2008

Cantua Dendritica (Polemoniaceae), A New Species From Peru, And Two New Cantua Names, J. Mark Porter, L. Alan Prather

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Cantua dendritica is described as new. This species is apparently restricted to the region around Paucartambo, Department of Cusco, Peru. Related to, and frequently identified as, Cantua flexuosa, this new species differs in its glandular calyx, highly branched trichomes on the margin of the corolla lobes, and its softly herbaceous, glandular pilose leaves. In addition, two new names are proposed in Cantua for the two species of Huthia that have been transferred to Cantua, C. volcanica (formerly Huthia caerulea), and C. mediamnis (formerly H. longiflora).
