Dimers composed of benzene (Bz), 1,3,5-triazine (Tz), cyanogen (Cy) and diacetylene (Di) are used to examine the effects of heterogeneity at the molecular level and at the cluster level on π⋯π stacking energies. The MP2 complete basis set (CBS) limits for the interaction energies (E int) of these model systems were determined with extrapolation techniques designed for correlation consistent basis sets. CCSD(T) calculations were used to correct for higher-order correlation effects (δECCSD(T)MP2) which were as large as +2.81 kcal mol-1. The introduction of nitrogen atoms into the parallel-slipped dimers of the aforementioned molecules causes significant changes to E …

Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding Persons With Mental Retardation, Danielle M. Eadens
Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding Persons With Mental Retardation, Danielle M. Eadens
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the attitudes held by police officers towards persons with mental retardation with regard to the domains of knowledge, social willingness, affect and contact. It also investigated relationships among group membership and perspectives towards mental retardation. An analysis of relationships between the four domains was also completed. A descriptive correlational design was employed to survey police officers, pairing the Social Distance Questionnaire with a researcher-designed instrument consisting of open-ended questions aligned with each domain. The sample included one hundred and eighty police officers from five different bureaus in one county in Central Florida.
Results of the study indicate …
Patch Reefs In Biscayne National Park, Fl: Sediments, Foraminiferal Distributions, And A Comparison Of Three Biotic Indicators Of Reef Health, Alexa Ramirez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coral cover remains highest on patch reefs at the northern end of the Florida reef tract. The reasons for this trend are not well understood, but may be related to the protection from extreme variations in water quality parameters provided by the near constant presence of islands at the north extent of the Florida Keys.
Three indices have been developed based on Foraminifera and sediment constituents. Two of the indices, the FORAM Index and the SEDCON Index, were developed to indicate the suitability of a reef environment for continued reef accretion. The third index, the Photic Index, is an assessment …

Schwann cell myelination depends on Krox-20/Egr2 and other promyelin transcription factors that are activated by axonal signals and control the generation of myelin-forming cells. Myelin-forming cells remain remarkably plastic and can revert to the immature phenotype, a process which is seen in injured nerves and demyelinating neuropathies. We report that c-Jun is an important regulator of this plasticity. At physiological levels, c-Jun inhibits myelin gene activation by Krox-20 or cyclic adenosine monophosphate. c-Jun also drives myelinating cells back to the immature state in transected nerves in vivo. Enforced c-Jun expression inhibits myelination in cocultures. Furthermore, c-Jun and Krox-20 show a …
Nadph Oxidase In Pc12 Cell Differentiation And Apoptosis, Lina Begdache
Nadph Oxidase In Pc12 Cell Differentiation And Apoptosis, Lina Begdache
Health & Wellness Studies Faculty Scholarship
Neuronal differentiation is an important process during human development and regenerative medicine. One factor linked to differentiation of neurons in vivo as well as in vitro is the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, neurodegeneration is the disease of the old age that is currently affecting millions. Although the etiology of each neurodegenerative disease differs, oxidative stress has been the common factor leading to neuronal death. PC12 cells differentiate into sympathetic-like neurons in the presence of nerve growth factor (NGF). Once terminally differentiated, PC12 cells undergo apoptosis following NGF deprivation with similar characteristics of sympathetic neuronal death. These …

The Impact Of Being Born With Cleft And Cleft Reparative Surgery On Overall Health And Speech Outcomes, Khatansuudal Evsanaa
Master's Theses
Orofacial cleft is one of the most common and treatable birth defects in the world. If left untreated, orofacial cleft can impair normal speech development, growth, and could lead to a number of health consequences later in life. The main motivation of the study is to measure the impact of being born with cleft and the cleft reparative surgery on overall speech and health cleft for teenagers in India using difference-in-differences approach along with household fixed effects method. An overall health outcome was measured using height, weight, grip strength and BMI, and the speech acceptability was measured using a “Universal …

Responses Of Captive Common Eiders To Implanted Satellite Transmitters With Percutaneous Antennas, Christopher J. Latty
Responses Of Captive Common Eiders To Implanted Satellite Transmitters With Percutaneous Antennas, Christopher J. Latty
Biological Sciences
Implanted transmitters have been used for over a decade to track the migrations and habitat use of many sea duck species, but their effects remain largely unstudied. To address this, I assessed the physiological and behavioral responses and characterized the clinical responses of six Common Eiders implanted with a transmitter with a percutaneous antenna. To maintain a semi-natural feeding regime, I fed birds benthicly in a 4.9 m deep dive column. I collected blood, feces, mass, and video data prior to surgery to establish baselines and at staggered intervals for 3.5 months post surgery to determine responses. All birds had …
Communicating Stroke: A Narrative Inquiry, Mary F. Gelinas
Communicating Stroke: A Narrative Inquiry, Mary F. Gelinas
Communication
This narrative research in communication addresses the lived experience of individuals who have suffered stroke. Specifically, I examine how the realities people create and the relationships they enact contribute to their sense of identity after the occurrence of a stroke. Health crises are times of reconstitution of self and relationships (Lorber, 1997). The present research has been conducted from a human science perspective, employing the epistemology of constructionism, the theory of social construction of reality, and narrative inquiry and conversational interviewing to produce an understanding of the experience of life after stroke. In this study, stroke survivors are considered active …

Population Genetic Structure Of Alaskan Pacific Ocean Perch (Sebastes Alutus), Katie J. Palof
Population Genetic Structure Of Alaskan Pacific Ocean Perch (Sebastes Alutus), Katie J. Palof
Fisheries
Knowledge of the population structure of a species is essential for its effective management and sustained production. Although Pacific ocean perch (Sebastes alutus, POP) is an important species both economically and ecologically, little is known about its population structure and life history in Alaskan waters. The objectives of this study were to describe the population structure of POP in terms of the numbers and geographic scale oflocal populations, their connectivity, and the compatibility of that structure with current management. Fourteen micro satellite loci were used to characterize the population structure genetically in eleven geographically distinct collections from sites along the …
Rising Land Falling Fishery: The Effects Of Isostatic Rebound And Rapid Succession On East Alsek River Sockeye Salmon, Derrek M. Faber
Rising Land Falling Fishery: The Effects Of Isostatic Rebound And Rapid Succession On East Alsek River Sockeye Salmon, Derrek M. Faber
Fisheries
This thesis includes research conducted in the Dry Bay Preserve of Glacier Bay National Park in 2005 and 2006 for the U.S. National Park Service. The research mission was to determine the cause of collapse in the East Alsek commercial sockeye fishery. The focus of the study was to determine if the collapse was due to human caused events or if there was a broader ecological basis for the recent downturn in returning sockeye. The East Alsek had undergone a dramatic decline in returning sockeye in recent years and the changing quality and quantity of habitat was thought to be …

Geographic Distribution Of Genetic Variation In Ten Species Of North American Forest Birds: Island Endemism And Transcontinental Ranges, Carrie M. Topp
Geographic Distribution Of Genetic Variation In Ten Species Of North American Forest Birds: Island Endemism And Transcontinental Ranges, Carrie M. Topp
Biological Sciences
Comparative genetic studies of geographically co-occurring species can lend insight into current and historic relationships among populations and species. This enables examination of similarities and differences among species and provides information about historic processes leading to current genetic and geographic distributions. I used this approach to study two different types of avian co-distribution: island endemism and transcontinental ranges. The Queen Charlotte Islands (QCI), Canada, have many endemic subspecies; historically it may have been a glacial refugium. I used genetic analyses to determine subspecies uniqueness and to identify units of conservation for five species, four with endemic QCI subspecies. I found …
