Automatic Guidance System Development Using Low Cost Ranging Devices, Santosh Pitla, Joe D. Luck, Scott A. Shearer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Autonomous guidance of agricultural vehicles for various field operations serves to increase productivity. Low cost infra-red ranging devices were used in this study to estimate the guidance directrix (offset distance (d) and heading error angle (Ø)). Two kinds of tracks were used for evaluating the performance of the infra-red sensors, one track was made of a cardboard in the laboratory and the other track was made of wheat crop in the field. The cardboard track consisted of straight parallel and non parallel edges whereas the wheat crop track had a series of different edges including few curves. From the results …

Sensor Ranging Technique For Determining Corn Plant Population, Joe D. Luck, Santosh Pitla, Scott A. Shearer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Mapping of corn plant population can provide useful information for making field management decisions. This research focused on using low cost infra-red sensors to count plants. The voltage output data from the sensors were processed using an algorithm developed to extract plant populations. Preliminary investigations were conducted using sensors mounted on a stationary track for laboratory testing and on a row crop tractor for field testing. Repeated measurements were taken on a manually counted corn row. Visual inspection of the data from the field test indicated the potential to identify corn stalks based on approximate physical widths of the stalks. …

Circular And Cumulative Causation And The Social Fabric Matrix, F. Gregory Hayden Jun 2008

Circular And Cumulative Causation And The Social Fabric Matrix, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

This study combines the problem orientation of instrumentalism and the systems analysis of circular and cumulative causation (CCC) through the utilization of a social fabric matrix (SFM) and network digraph. The SFM is utilized to articulate part of the Nebraska State system used to distribute state funds among local K-12 public schools. The empirical content is used to derive conceptual conclusions about CCC and to make comments about a controversy regarding agents, institutions, and new rule development. This study provides a refinement of CCC, and it confirms that rules are not the result of self-action by agents.

Candida Albicans Tup1 Is Involved In Farnesol-Mediated Inhibition Of Filamentous-Growth Induction, Bessie W. Kebaara, Melanie L. Langford, Dhammika H. M. L. P. Navarathna, Raluca Dumitru, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Audrey L. Atkin

Kenneth Nickerson Papers

Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that can interconvert between yeast and filamentous forms. Its ability to regulate morphogenesis is strongly correlated with virulence. Tup1, a transcriptional repressor, and the signaling molecule farnesol are both capable of negatively regulating the yeast to filamentous conversion. Based on this overlap in function, we tested the hypothesis that the cellular response to farnesol involves, in part, the activation of Tup1. Tup1 functions with the DNA binding proteins Nrg1 and Rfg1 as a transcription regulator to repress the expression of hypha-specific genes. The tup1/tup1 and nrg1/nrg1 mutants, but not the rfg1/rfg1 mutant, failed to …

Parasites As Probes For Prehistoric Human Migrations?, Adauto Araújo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Host-specific parasites of humans are used to track ancient migrations. Based on archaeoparasitology, it is clear that humans entered the New World at least twice in ancient times. The archaeoparasitology of some intestinal parasites in the New World points to migration routes other than the Bering Land Bridge. Helminths have been found in mummies and coprolites in North and South America. Hookworms (Necator and Ancylostoma), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura) and other helminths require specific conditions for life-cycle completion. They could not survive in the cold climate of the northern region of the Americas. Therefore, humans would have …

Effects Of Ambient Velocity Shear On Nonlinear Internal Wave Associated Mixing At The Columbia River Plume Front, Jiayi Pan, David A. Jay Jun 2008

Effects Of Ambient Velocity Shear On Nonlinear Internal Wave Associated Mixing At The Columbia River Plume Front, Jiayi Pan, David A. Jay

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Large-amplitude nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) are frequently observed propagating away from Columbia River tidal plume fronts. They are generated because of the deceleration of the frontal bulge. During the River Influences on Shelf Ecosystems project cruises, the velocity, density structure and acoustic backscatter of the plume fronts and frontal NLIWs were observed using a towed vehicle, vessel-mounted instrumentation, and a vessel X band radar. These observations indicate that in the presence of strong ambient velocity shear, the NLIWs with maximum amplitudes occur well below the density interface and at a depth deeper than in the absence of shear. This deepening …

Training In Reversal: A Fishing Gear Workshop By Fishermen For Non-Fishermen, Kenneth J. La Valley, Pingguo He

Journal of Extension

Increasingly, people without fishing gear backgrounds are involved in fisheries management. While they have strengths in their respective professions, an operational knowledge of fishing gears is lacking. Such gaps can be filled with collaborative learning workshops utilizing industry members as instructors. This reversal training strategy also builds mutual understanding between groups that are usually at odds. Commercial trawlers and gillnetters owned and operated by the industry were used as at-sea workshop platforms for two 3-day workshops. Participants included National Marine Fisheries Service employees, Congressional and Senatorial staffers, State fisheries scientists, Marine Docents, extension professionals, and cooperative research funding organizations.

Sisters In Battle: Five Portraits, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

PART TWO: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES

A methodical perusal of biographical entries in encyclopedic works such as the Schweizer Lexikon ( 1998) or the Historische Lexikon der Schweiz (HLS), now in progress, brings to light a great many Swiss women who were active in the advocacy of women's equality, but who are far too little known. Some dedicated themselves to a specific issue, others were driven by a comprehensive vision of existing inequality to be remedied. They fought on a broad front against varied forms of male dominance. They hailed from the political right, center, and left, from the working class …
