Peristaltic Pumping Of A Non-Newtonian Fluid, Amit Medhavi Jun 2008

Peristaltic Pumping Of A Non-Newtonian Fluid, Amit Medhavi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The flow induced by sinusoidal peristaltic motion of the tube wall of a non-Newtonian fluid obeying Herschel-Bulkley equation (a general rheological equation that represents a powerlaw, Bingham and Newtonian fluid for particular choice of parameters) under long wavelength and low Reynolds number approximation is investigated. The results obtained for flow rate, pressure drop and friction force are discussed both qualitatively and quantitatively and compared with other related studies. It is found that the pressure drop increases with the flow rate and yield stress but decreases with the increasing amplitude ratio. The flow behaviour index shows significant impact on the magnitude …

Effect Of Long-Term Hypoxia On Myometrial Contractility In The Pregnant Sheep, Timothy Kimo Arakawa Jun 2008

Effect Of Long-Term Hypoxia On Myometrial Contractility In The Pregnant Sheep, Timothy Kimo Arakawa

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous research from our laboratory has shown that myometrial contractility is reduced in pregnant sheep exposed to long-term hypoxia (LTH). The studies in this dissertation examined the effect of LTH on various aspects of Ca2 regulation, large-conductance, Ca2+ activated (BK) channels activity and protein expression, and cGMP-depended protein kinase (PKG) activity. Myometrium was collected from near-term pregnant sheep exposed to high altitude-associated LTH and from normoxic pregnant controls. After pretreatment with 10-8 M oxytocin (OT), circular and longitudinal myometrial strips were treated with nifedipine (L-type Ca2+ channel blocker), ruthenium red, ryanodine (blockers of IPssensitive stores), 2-Nitro-4-carboxyphenyI-N,N-diphenyIcarbamate …

Response Of Endothelial Cells To Stressors: The Impact Of Aging And Diabetes, Katie Mclellan Jun 2008

Response Of Endothelial Cells To Stressors: The Impact Of Aging And Diabetes, Katie Mclellan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Preliminary research indicates there is some impairment of the endothelial cells to respond to single stressors such as local heat, shear stress, and global heat in older people and people who have diabetes. The response of the skin blood flow to local heat is an indicator of the endothelial cells ability to cope with stress. In addition, factors such as thicker subcutaneous fat and skin moisture may impair the skin’s ability to dissipate heat. For older people and people with diabetes, this endothelial dysfunction may cause an even more diminished response to multiple stressors. However, no studies have examined the …

Values, Ethnicity, And Ses : The Case Of Latino And Anglo American Women, Claudia Venessa Argueta Jun 2008

Values, Ethnicity, And Ses : The Case Of Latino And Anglo American Women, Claudia Venessa Argueta

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Past research on values has typically employed a quantitative and top-down approach in determining the universality of values across gender, religion and nation categories (Schwartz & Huismans, 1995; Schwartz & Bardi, 2001). However, studies have often failed to identify specific values that are related to particular ethnic and socioeconomic communities within a culturally diverse society (Lee, Whitehead & Balchin, 2000; McCulloguh, Wilson, Teasdale, Kolpakch, & Skelly, 1993). The aim of this study was to use a bottom up, qualitative approach to identify core values among Latino and Anglo women in Southern California. The research was guided by a model for …

Behavioral And Physiological Ecology Of Scorpion Venom Expenditure: Stinging, Spraying, And Venom Regeneration, Zia Nisani Jun 2008

Behavioral And Physiological Ecology Of Scorpion Venom Expenditure: Stinging, Spraying, And Venom Regeneration, Zia Nisani

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In this dissertation, I reviewed the functional aspects of venom from a behavioral perspective to develop a comprehensive understanding of the behavioral ecology of venom. To explore the behavioral and physiological ecology of venom expenditure by scorpions, I conducted four studies of the medically significant Buthid scorpion Parabuthus transvaalicus. The first two experiments revealed that scorpions regulate their venom expenditure during defensive stinging and squirting in the most complex manner yet described for any venomous organism. When stinging, these scorpions can choose between delivering a dry or wet sting. Should they deliver a wet sting, they meter the volume …

A Geospatial Approach For New Perspectives On Satisfaction With Health Services In Malawi, Gideon Mazinga Jun 2008

A Geospatial Approach For New Perspectives On Satisfaction With Health Services In Malawi, Gideon Mazinga

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This dissertation explored the spatial pattern of user satisfaction with health services and factors, including policies that potentially explain the variation in the district-level of user satisfaction with health services. Nationwide secondary data was extracted from the 2002 Core Social Welfare Indicators Survey and the National Health Services Statistics databases obtained from National Statistics of Malawi. The National Health Facilities inventory obtained from the Malawi diffusion project was also geocoded to display the distribution of health care facilities in the country. Spatial autocorrelation and regression modeling techniques were applied on the national representative data set.

The spatial autocorrelation test revealed …

Oxidative Stress-Mediated Anticancer Activity Of Novel Ahr Modulators Af & 5f203, Lancelot S. Mclean Jun 2008

Oxidative Stress-Mediated Anticancer Activity Of Novel Ahr Modulators Af & 5f203, Lancelot S. Mclean

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer tends to respond to anti-estrogen agents such as Tamoxifen. Approximately 40% of ER+ breast cancer is resistant to these agents and those that initially respond often acquire resistance. Estrogen receptor negative (ER-) breast cancer remains largely unresponsive to these agents. It is therefore vital to discover drugs that are potent in both forms of breast cancer. Aminoflavone, (5-amino-2, 3-fluorophenyl)-6,8-difluoro-7-methyl-4H-l-benzopyran-4-one; AF; NSC 686288) and 5F203, (2-[-Amino-3-methy phenyl]-5-flurobenzothiazole) are novel anticancer candidate agents that display potent in vitro and in vivo anti-proliferative activity against select human tumor cells with a unique anticancer activity profile in the …

Hiv Risk Among Nursing Students In Rwanda : Self-Efficacy, Knowledge And Attitudes, Jacqueline Wosinski Jun 2008

Hiv Risk Among Nursing Students In Rwanda : Self-Efficacy, Knowledge And Attitudes, Jacqueline Wosinski

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is the leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa. With a prevalence rate of 3.1% in 2006, Rwanda is one of the hardest hit countries. Nurses are often the leading health professionals in rural communities and at the forefront of the fight against the HIV pandemic. Little has been written on how nurses are prepared to intervene successfully along the continuum of HIV prevention and care. A mixed-methods sequential exploratory approach was used to explore this question.

In the first phase, cognitive, socio-psychological, and environmental factors of nursing education in Rwanda in regard to HIV …

Partner Communication And Factors Associated With The Decision To Obtain An Hiv Test Among Chinese/Chinese American Community College Students In Northern California, Sang Leng Trieu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

HIV testing and counseling is considered the cornerstone of a comprehensive approach to HIV prevention and education. Little is known, however, about HIV prevention, including HIV testing rates for Asian Pacific Islander (API) women, because data for this ethnic group is aggregated, thus limiting specific data for Chinese/Chinese American population or other API subgroups. This dissertation research examined factors associated with the decision to obtain an HIV test among Chinese/Chinese American community college women and explored the association among relationship status, partnership communication, and discussions of HIV testing.

Using constructs of the health belief model, an online and paper-pencil, crosssectional …

Novel Binding Domains Mediate Binding Of Hpv 16 E6 To Fadd And Procaspase 8, Sandy S. Tungteakkhun

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To evade the host response to infection, viruses have developed means to survive and propagate. HPV 16, a causative agent of cervical cancer and of some cases of oropharyngeal cancers, is one example. We have reported that the early viral protein E6 binds to proteins necessary for propagation of the apoptotic signal following receptor/ligand interactions, such as those mediated by FADD DED and procaspase 8 DED. E6 expression leads to the dose-dependent accelerated degradation of FADD and the protection of E6-expressing cells from Fas-induced apoptosis. Surprisingly, the splice isoforms of E6, E6large and E6*, affect the stability of procaspase …

Mechanisms Of T Helper Cell Modulation In A Simulated Space Radiation Environment, Asma Rizvi Jun 2008

Mechanisms Of T Helper Cell Modulation In A Simulated Space Radiation Environment, Asma Rizvi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Exposure to solar particle events (SPEs) poses the most serious threat to astronaut health. Due to this radiation environment, exploration of the solar system beyond Earth’s orbit entails many risks for the crew on these deep space missions. Depression or dysfunction of the immune system is a major concern due to its high radio-sensitivity; potential consequences include overwhelming infection, development of cancer, fibrosis, and poor wound healing. Astronauts are also exposed to low dose/low dose rate (LDR) radiation. A three month stay at the international space station exposes them to ~ 0.05 Gy of radiation.

C57BL/6 mice received LDR gamma-radiation …

Differential Transcriptional Analysis Of The Cyanobacterium Cyanothece Sp. Atcc 51142 During Light-Dark And Continuous-Light Growth., Jörg Toepel, Eric Welsh, Tina C. Summerfield, Himadri B. Pakrasi, Louis A. Sherman

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We analyzed the metabolic rhythms and differential gene expression in the unicellular, diazotrophic cyanobacterium Cyanothece sp. strain ATCC 51142 under N2-fixing conditions after a shift from normal 12-h light-12-h dark cycles to continuous light. We found that the mRNA levels of ∼10% of the genes in the genome demonstrated circadian behavior during growth in free-running (continuous light) conditions. The genes for N2 fixation displayed a strong circadian behavior, whereas photosynthesis and respiration genes were not as tightly regulated. One of our main objectives was to determine the strategies used by these cells to perform N2 fixation …

Foods Scraps Composting And Vector Control, Bradley F. Blackwell, Thomas W. Seamans Jun 2008

Foods Scraps Composting And Vector Control, Bradley F. Blackwell, Thomas W. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Nontraditional waste management facilities, particularly new projects to compost food scraps, are becoming more common because of national and state initiatives to promote recycling and extend landfill capacities. In fact, food waste is the third largest component of generated waste by weight, following yard trimmings and corrugated boxes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that each American disposes of 1.3 pounds of food waste daily or nearly 474 pounds annually. While there is a clear need to recycle food waste, the location of waste management facilities and national initiatives on waste management are increasingly controversial, partly because of potential …

Understanding Neurosurgery Through Experimental And Computer Models, Ciro Randazzo Md, Aditya S. Pandey Md, Erol Veznedaroglu Md

JHN Journal

Endovascular neurosurgery is an evolving field, with the goal of treating neurological disease with minimal invasion of the body. The current approach is to deliver focused therapies via catheters traveling through the vascular tree. Refinement and advancement of these techniques requires not just new ideas, but new ideas that hold up when tested through the scientific method.

Before clinical trials can begin, ethics and law demand that the ideas are tested first under experimental models. One benefit of these pre-clinical tests is the early identification of side effects. Another is the opportunity to practice and polish surgical technique in advance …

Alternative Piezoresistor Designs For Maximizing Cantilever Sensitivity., Patrick Carl Fletcher Jun 2008

Alternative Piezoresistor Designs For Maximizing Cantilever Sensitivity., Patrick Carl Fletcher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the last 15 years, researchers have explored the use of piezoresistive microcantilevers/resonators as gas sensors because of their relative ease in fabrication, low production cost, and their ability to detect changes in mass or surface stress with fairly good sensitivity. However, existing microcantilever designs rely on irreversible chemical reactions for detection and researchers have been unable to optimize symmetric geometries for increased sensitivity. Previous work by our group showed the capability of T-shaped piezoresistive cantilevers to detect gas composition using a nonreaction-based method – viscous damping. However, this geometry yielded only small changes in resistance. Recently, computational studies performed …

Improving The Computer Science In Bioinformatics Through Open Source Pedagogy, John David N. Dionisio, Kam D. Dahlquist Jun 2008

Improving The Computer Science In Bioinformatics Through Open Source Pedagogy, John David N. Dionisio, Kam D. Dahlquist

Biology Faculty Works

Bioinformatics relies more than ever on information technologies. This pressures scientists to keep up with software development best practices. However, traditional computer science curricula do not necessarily expose students to collaborative and long-lived software development. Using open source principles, practices, and tools forms an effective pedagogy for software development best practices. This paper reports on a bioinformatics teaching framework implemented through courses introducing computer science students to the field. The courses led to an initial product release consisting of software and an Escherichia coli K12 GenMAPP Gene Database, within a total "incubation time" of six months.
