Reproduction Within Marmotine Ground Squirrels (Sciuridae, Xerinae, Marmotini): Patterns Among Genera, Virginia Hayssen Jun 2008

Reproduction Within Marmotine Ground Squirrels (Sciuridae, Xerinae, Marmotini): Patterns Among Genera, Virginia Hayssen

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The sciurid tribe Marmotini has a distinctive, highly specialized reproductive profile characterized by annually produced litters of many offspring, each of small mass and fast growth rate. However, not all genera of marmotines follow the reproductive profile of the tribe. In fact, included in the tribe are squirrels with the highest and lowest energetic investment into reproduction of the entire family. Because of its large litter size, Ammospermophilus has the largest energetic investment into reproduction of nearly all squirrels. Also, Ammospermophilus is not limited to 1 litter per year. At the opposite extreme, Marmota has the smallest energetic investment into …

Reproductive Effort In Squirrels: Ecological, Phylogenetic, Allometric, And Latitudinal Patterns, Virginia Hayssen Jun 2008

Reproductive Effort In Squirrels: Ecological, Phylogenetic, Allometric, And Latitudinal Patterns, Virginia Hayssen

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The distinctive features of reproduction in squirrels are the lack of allometric influences on the duration of reproductive investment; the strong allometric influences on offspring mass; and a trade-off between number and size of young, suggesting an important developmental component to reproduction. Lengths of gestation and lactation do not vary with body size but neonatal and weaning mass do. Apparently, the major constraint on reproduction in squirrels is not resources per se (food, calories, minerals, or water) but rather the length of time such resources are available. Squirrels adjust growth rate to fit the timing of resource abundance. Within the …

Anti-Trafficking Campaign And Karaoke Bar Hostesses In China, Tiantian Zheng Jun 2008

Anti-Trafficking Campaign And Karaoke Bar Hostesses In China, Tiantian Zheng

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This article discusses the adverse effect upon sex workers of China’s abolitionist policy that focuses on forced prostitution and launches anti-trafficking campaigns. The argument developed in this paper is based on over twenty months of fieldwork between 1999 and 2002 in Dalian. I will first discuss karaoke bar industry and China’s policy of anti-trafficking campaigns. I will then demonstrate the impact of this policy on hostesses in karaoke bars. I will follow it with an account of how, unlike the government’s perception of forced prostitution, hostesses voluntarily choose their profession and actively seek sex work in countries such as Japan …

Physicians Providing Alternative Medicine: Boundary Crossing And The Emergence Of Integrative Medicine, Richard Scott Lockwood Jun 2008

Physicians Providing Alternative Medicine: Boundary Crossing And The Emergence Of Integrative Medicine, Richard Scott Lockwood

Dissertations and Theses

Integrative medicine (IM) has organized as a new area of specialization in mainstream healthcare. The development of IM is widely attributed to popular demand for the range of therapies known collectively as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). During the 1990's the rate of acceptance of CAM accelerated among consumers, professions, financing and education. The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) measured CAM utilization and professional service provision during the years 1996 and 1998, but never since. These surveys were unique because they specifically inquired as to whether CAM was provided by a physician, among other types of professionals. This dissertation defines …

大體解剖學教學的發展與演變, 榮邦 陳, 琮涵 馮, 銘勳 謝, 啟瑞 曾

Journal of Medical Education

Cannibals, Amazons, And Social Reproduction In Amazonia, Astrid Steverlynck Jun 2008

Cannibals, Amazons, And Social Reproduction In Amazonia, Astrid Steverlynck

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper analyzes Amerindian representations of Amazon-like women and cannibalism in the context of ideas about the processes of creation. While cannibalism focuses on the socialization of death through male agency and control int he context of relationships with external others, the myths about Amaon-like women focus on the social control of sexuality and female creativity (pregnancy and birth) through the establishment of male-female cooperation. Both discourses rely on the intrinsic qualities of male and female creativity that constitute the elementary structure of Amerindian cosmology. they explore the two most fundamental moments in the chain of creative processes that constitute …

Articles

Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) represents a favourable option for the detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV). A real-time reverse transcriptase PCR (RTPCR) assay was developed as a qualitative diagnostic screening method for the detection of HCV using the ABI PRISM 7500 Sequence Detection System. The primers and probe were designed to target the 5′ untranslated region of the hepatitis C viral genome. A second heterologous probe assay was developed for the detection of the haemagglutinin gene of phocine distemper virus (PDV) and was used as an internal control. A semi-automated HCV extraction method was also implemented using the ABI …

Exploration Of The Chemical And Biological Processes Through Molecular Dynamics Simulation And Blocklocalized Wavefunction Method, Yuchun Lin Jun 2008

Exploration Of The Chemical And Biological Processes Through Molecular Dynamics Simulation And Blocklocalized Wavefunction Method, Yuchun Lin

Dissertations

Computer simulation plays a crucial role in interpreting, unifying and guiding experimental observations. In this dissertation, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the block-localized wavefunction (BLW) method have been used to explore the chemical and biological processes.

Detailed MD simulations were performed to study the transportation of NH4+, NH3 and H2O through the Escherichia coli ammonium transporter (AmtB) membrane protein. A periplasmic recruitment vestibule was identified and the entrance of an NH4+ into this vestibule requires only 3.1 kcal/mol. In the end of this vestibule, the phenyl ring of Phe107 dynamically opens and …

Reproductive Fertility In Herd Bulls, George Perry, Julie Walker, Russ Daly Jun 2008

Reproductive Fertility In Herd Bulls, George Perry, Julie Walker, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Herd bulls have a large influence on many aspects of beef operations, especially an operation’s profitability. For example, percent calf crop weaned is the single most important factor influencing profitability, and the number of cows bred during the breeding season plays the largest role in percent calf crop weaned. Therefore, an operation’s profitability is directly tied to the herd bull’s breeding ca¬pability. In addition, herd bulls supply half of the genetics to all the calves he sires; therefore, bull selection can be the most powerful method of genetic improvement in the herd. Herd bulls also influence overall herd fertility more …

Two-Dimensional Computer-Generated Ornamentation Using A User-Driven Global Planning Strategy, Dustin Robert Anderson Jun 2008

Two-Dimensional Computer-Generated Ornamentation Using A User-Driven Global Planning Strategy, Dustin Robert Anderson

Master's Theses

Hand drawn ornamentation, such as floral or geometric patterns, is a tedious and time consuming task that requires much skill and training in ornamental design principles and aesthetics. Ornamental drawings both historically and presently play critical roles in all things from art to architecture; however, little work has been done in exploring their algorithmic and interactive generation. The field of computer graphics offers many algorithmic possibilities for assisting an artist in creating two-dimensional ornamental art. When computers handle the repetition and overall structure of ornament, considerable savings in time and money can result. Today, the few existing computer algorithms used …

Day Length And Estradiol Affect Same-Sex Affiliative Behavior In The Female Meadow Vole, Annaliese K. Beery, Theresa J. Loo, Irving Zucker Jun 2008

Day Length And Estradiol Affect Same-Sex Affiliative Behavior In The Female Meadow Vole, Annaliese K. Beery, Theresa J. Loo, Irving Zucker

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Non-sexual social bonding between adult mammals remains poorly understood, despite its importance in many species. Female meadow voles are territorial and nest alone in long summer day lengths when circulating estradiol concentrations are high, but cohabit in groups in short winter photoperiods when estradiol secretion is low. The influence of day length and estradiol on same-sex huddling behavior was assessed in adult female pairs housed together in long day lengths (LDs) or short day lengths (SDs) from weaning. The behavior of intact, ovariectomized, and estradiol-treated ovariectomized females from each photoperiod was assessed during 3 hour partner preference tests. Intact SD …

Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. In the normal individual, both disseminated histoplasmosis and symptomatic adrenal histoplasmosis are rare. Herein, we describe the case of a 50-year-old gentleman residing in western Sudan who presented with a 7-month history of generalized body weakness, easy fatigue, and frequent attacks of vomiting and diarrhea. Physical examination and laboratory investigations confirmed the diagnosis of Addison9s disease due to Histoplasma capsulatum var duboisii infection of the adrenal glands. He was treated with intravenous hydrocortisone, followed by oral prednisolone and itraconazole.

A Comparative Analysis Of Pixel-Based And Object-Oriented Image Analysis Methods Using Landsat Imagery, Jason Joseph Delisio Jun 2008

A Comparative Analysis Of Pixel-Based And Object-Oriented Image Analysis Methods Using Landsat Imagery, Jason Joseph Delisio

Masters Theses

Pixel-based and object-oriented image analysis methods are two popular techniques for classifying satellite imagery. Pixel-based analysis is typically used for coarser resolution imagery while object-oriented analysis is ideal for high resolution imagery. However, the ability of object-oriented image analysis to segment images based on factors such as shape, color, texture, and spatial attributes suggest that it can perform as well or better than pixel-based analysis in classifying medium resolution imagery. A comparative analysis of the two methods was performed using Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper imagery from September 2006 to classify grassland quality and land cover in Da'erhanmaoming'an (DaMao) Banner, Inner …

Student Response Systems In Higher Education: Moving Beyond Linear Teaching And Surface Learning, Harry L. Dangel, Charles Xiaoxue Wang Jun 2008

Student Response Systems In Higher Education: Moving Beyond Linear Teaching And Surface Learning, Harry L. Dangel, Charles Xiaoxue Wang

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Over the past decade, instructors in colleges and universities increasingly have used Student Response Systems (SRSs)--typically in large classes to increase the level of student engagement and learning. Research shows that both students and instructors perceive SRSs to be beneficial, although evidence of improved learning has been less clear. Experts emphasize that instructors must consider how technology might enhance good pedagogy in order for increases in learning to occur. SRSs do increase student engagement and provide prompt feedback—two key practices that promote learning. However, professional groups propose goals for students in higher education that focus on deep learning rather than …

Mindfulness In Childbirth: An Investigation Of The Effects Of Mindfulness Training On Maternal Satisfaction With Childbirth And Obstetric Outcomes, Brenda L. Bratton Jun 2008

Mindfulness In Childbirth: An Investigation Of The Effects Of Mindfulness Training On Maternal Satisfaction With Childbirth And Obstetric Outcomes, Brenda L. Bratton

Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of mindfulness training on obstetric outcomes and maternal satisfaction with childbirth. We were interested in whether mindfulness training was more effective than a control group receiving psychoeducation on stress reduction. The goal of the intervention group was to increase participants' moment-to-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, and body sensations during childbirth so that they would respond to these experiences rather than react to them in an automatic manner. These strategies were hypothesized to help a laboring woman minimize fear or anxiety associated with pain and complications and be more adaptive to whatever circumstances arose. Repeated measures …

The Social Reality Of Depression: Dtc Advertising Of Antidepressants And Perceptions Of The Prevalence And Lifetime Risk Of Depression, Jin Seong Park, Jean M. Grow

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This study is rooted in the research traditions of cultivation theory, construct accessibility, and availability heuristic. Based on a survey with 221 subjects, this study finds that familiarity with direct-to-consumer (DTC) print advertisements for antidepressant brands is associated with inflated perceptions of the prevalence and lifetime risk of depression. The study concludes that DTC advertising potentially has significant effects on perceptions of depression prevalence and risk. Interpersonal experiences with depression coupled with DTC advertising appear to significantly predict individuals' perceived lifetime risk of depression. The study ultimately demonstrates that DTC advertising may play a role in constructing social reality of …

Contribution Of Cystine-Glutamate Antiporters To The Psychotomimetic Effects Of Phencyclidine, David A. Baker, Aric Madayag, Lars V. Kristiansen, James H. Meador-Woodruff, Vahram Haroutunian, Ilangovan Raju

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Altered glutamate signaling contributes to a myriad of neural disorders, including schizophrenia. While synaptic levels are intensely studied, nonvesicular release mechanisms, including cystine–glutamate exchange, maintain high steady-state glutamate levels in the extrasynaptic space. The existence of extrasynaptic receptors, including metabotropic group II glutamate receptors (mGluR), pose nonvesicular release mechanisms as unrecognized targets capable of contributing to pathological glutamate signaling. We tested the hypothesis that activation of cystine–glutamate antiporters using the cysteine prodrug N-acetylcysteine would blunt psychotomimetic effects in the rodent phencyclidine (PCP) model of schizophrenia. First, we demonstrate that PCP elevates extracellular glutamate in the prefrontal cortex, an effect …

Neural Network Models For Solving The Maximum Flow Problem, S. Effati, M. Ranjbar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, two new neural network models for solving the maximum flow problem are presented. The maximum flow problem in networks is formulated as a special type of linear programming problem and it is solved by appropriately defined neural networks. The nonlinear neural networks are able to generate optimal solution for maximum flow problem. We solve neural network models by one of the numerical method. Finally, some numerical examples are provided for the sake of illustration.
