Fisheries Research Report No. 176 - Regrowth Of Pilchard (Sardinops Sagax) Stocks Off Southern Wa Following The Mass Mortality Event Of 1998/99, Daniel J. Gaughan, M Craine, Peter Stephenson, Timothy I. Leary, Paul Lewis
Fisheries Research Reports
Final FRDC Report – Project 2000/135
This project produced time series of estimates of spawning biomass for pilchards in four purse seine management zones in Western Australia, three on the south coast and one on the west coast. The pilchard stocks in Western Australia have recovered strongly since the 1998/99 mass mortality.
This project has shown that the fishery independent and fishery dependent methods applied to Western Australia’s pilchard fisheries cannot provide precise estimates of the size of the pilchard spawning biomass in each management region. Although the trends indicated by the age-structured simulation model are reliable and provide good …

Digital learning research
The use of information and communications technology (ICT) in education is a relatively new phenomenon. Educators, researchers and thinkers have taken up the challenges of using ICT since the 1980s with varied success. The advent of the internet and the World Wide Web has pressured new productivity and service demands as well as expectations on these endeavours although research to guide best practice remains scant and elusive. This discussion about the trends occurring in ICT in education and research begins with a brief history. The brief history of ICT raises a number of issues that provide options for thinking about …

Robotic Fingerspelling Hand For The Aid Of The Deaf And Blind, Alan Tepe, Saeed Niku
Honors Undergraduate Research Journal
This quarter, work continued on the design and construction of a robotic fingerspelling hand. The hand is being designed to aid in communication for individuals who are both deaf and blind. In the winter quarter, research was centered on determining an effective method of actuation for the robotic hand. This spring 2008 quarter, time was spent designing the mechanisms needed to mimic the size and motions of a human hand. Several methods were used to determine a proper size for the robotic hand, including using the ManneQuinPro human modeling system to approximate the size of an average male human hand …

A Strategy For Managing The Recreational Catch Of Demersal Scalefish In The West Coast Bioregion. Decisions By The Minister For Fisheries, Jon Ford (Minister For Fisheries; The Kimberley, Pilbara And Gascoyne)
Fisheries Management Papers
The following recreational fisheries management package is a result of an extensive public consultation process. The package has been carefully developed to deliver the required reduction in catches. It is important to understand that each management measure contributes to the reduction in catches necessary to give these stocks a chance to rebuild and that no measure on its own will deliver the required reduction in catch.
To ensure the ongoing recovery of stocks, an adaptive approach to management has been adopted. This approach will involve an ongoing review of the effectiveness of these management arrangements, and take into account the …

Variation In Resource Acquisition And Utilization Traits Between Native And Invasive Perennial Forbs, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Christina E. Martin, Molly R. Falasco, Jeremy J. James
Biology
Understanding the functional traits that allow invasives to outperform natives is a necessary first step in improving our ability to predict and manage the spread of invaders. In nutrient-limited systems, plant competitive ability is expected to be closely tied to the ability of a plant to exploit nutrient-rich microsites and use these captured nutrients efficiently. The broad objective of this work was to compare the ability of native and invasive perennial forbs to acquire and use nutrients from nutrient-rich microsites. We evaluated morphological and physiological responses among four native and four invasive species exposed to heterogeneous (patch) or homogeneous (control) …

Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education. - David Polis
In January, the authors of this paper spent an afternoon at the Norval Outdoor School in Norval, Ontario. It was a cold day. The ground was blanketed with a layer of new fallen snow and a group of 5th grade students were engaged in a form …

Securities Fraud, Recidivism, And Deterrence, Jayne W. Barnard
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
Legal scholars have expended considerable energy on the study of high-level securities fraud violators-Ken Lay, Bernie Ebbers, Dennis Kozlowski, etc. There has been little attention, however, to the perpetrators of "retail" securities fraud-the con artists who sell bogus stock over the Internet, orchestrate elaborate pump-and-dump schemes, and create a never-ending array of purportedly "risk free" investment opportunities. Collectively, and in a cruel mockery of capitalism, these offenders extract hundreds of millions dollars from investors each year. In this article, Professor Barnard examines this group of offenders, focusing particularly on those who recidivate-often moving from state to state and scheme to …

Optical Low Coherence Reflectometry Applications To Meat Tenderness Testing, Matthew Schlutz, Dennis Derickson
Honors Undergraduate Research Journal
The goal of this research project is to develop an optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) system for use in testing meat tenderness. This system will use a precision reflectometer that sends out infrared light to a sample and collects the reflections from the outer layers of the meat to plot a structural representation of the sample in a reflectivity-over-distance measurement. Tenderness is correlated to the relative densities of proteins and connective tissues in the meat, which this technique may be able to image. In the winter of 2007, a system was constructed for testing purposes. In the spring of 2007, …

Interpreting The Spatial Distribution Of Bathypelagic Nekton Along The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, C. I. H. Anderson, J. Horne, Tracey Sutton
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
The spatial distribution of organisms plays a key role in facilitating biological processes, such as trophic interactions, which govern ecosystem structure and function. Attempts to understand bathypelagic (1000-4000 m depth) ecosystem dynamics have been hampered by the coarse temporal-spatial resolution and static nature of most sampling strategies. This study combines a traditional approach, based on discrete net trawls sampling small volumes, with the continuous full water column coverage provided by fisheries acoustics to investigate the distribution of biomass along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The limited trawl samples have been interpreted as showing a positive relationship between the presence of the …

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) plants that were grown in vitro for 17 or 22 weeks as a fed-batch culture in 2.5 L vessels yielded 39 to 43 g and 62 to 70 g of fresh rhizomes per vessel, respectively (95 % confidence interval). The MS liquid medium was maintained at 6 % sucrose through media addition twice during the experiment. Various methods were employed in attempts to increase secondary metabolism. Antioxidant and total phenolics assays were employed to characterize phytochemical activity. A first experiment exposed four clones to phenylalanine and/or methyl jasmonate (MeJa) from week 12 to 17 in …

We identify a continental‐scale network of sites to evaluate how two aspects of climate change – sea‐level rise and intensification of windstorms – will influence the structure, function, and capacity of coastal and inland forest ecosystems to deliver ecosystem services (eg carbon sequestration, storm protection, pollution control, habitat support, food). The network consists of coastal wetland and inland forest sites across the US and is representative of continental‐level gradients of precipitation, temperature, vegetation, frequency of occurrence of major windstorms, value of insured properties, tidal range, watershed land use, and sediment availability. The network would provide real‐time measurements of the characteristics …

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
It has been said, "a picture is worth a thousand words." If this is true, reason suggests that a direct experience is worth a thousand pictures! Unfortunately, even a cursory look at our society reveals that words and pictures are increasingly defining reality for more and more citizens. This is especially true for children when parents provide an array of electronic devices to "occupy" any available unstructured time and when schools routinely keep them indoors tied to books, computers, and tests. This issue of Taproot attempts to provide some insights on why we are holding our children prisoners and what …

Faculty around the world are experiencing changes in their academic work. While “traditional” universities are responding to demands for greater accountability and increased and timely outputs from research, faculty within new higher education institutions (HEIs) are undergoing a paradigm shift within three concentric circles of change. Not only do they have to alter their own academic practice, but their HEI is also undergoing a revolution at a time when higher education is itself being transformed. The article documents these changes, challenging the assumption that there is a homogeneous or “single academic profession” with a common experience of academic change, and …

Rules Of Engagement: Interspecies Interactions That Regulate Microbial Communities, Ainslie Little, Courtney Robinson, S Peterson, Kenneth Raffa, Jo Handelsman
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Microbial communities comprise an interwoven matrix of biological diversity modified by physical and chemical variation over space and time. Although these communities are the major drivers of biosphere processes, relatively little is known about their structure and function, and predictive modeling is limited by a dearth of comprehensive ecological principles that describe microbial community processes. Here we discuss working definitions of central ecological terms that have been used in various fashions in microbial ecology, provide a framework by focusing on different types of interactions within communities, review the status of the interface between evolutionary and ecological study, and highlight important …

We examined the incidence of rake mark scars from killer whales Orcinus orca on the flukes of humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae throughout the North Pacific to assess geo- graphic variation in predation pressure. We used 3650 identification photographs from 16 wintering or feeding areas collected during 1990 to 1993 to determine conservative estimates in the percentage of whales with rake mark scarring. Dramatic differences were seen in the incidence of rake marks among regions, with highest rates on wintering grounds off Mexico (26 vs. 14 % at others) and feeding areas off California (20 vs. 6% at others), 2 areas …

Material Properties Of Coyote Dentine Under Bending: Gradients In Flexibility And Strength By Position, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
We investigate the nonlinear properties of dentine from the upper canines of coyotes Canis latranswith bending tests. With the results we predict the behavior of whole canines under load. Coyote dentine is not homogeneous but is stronger and more ductile farther away from the pulp cavity. The modulus of rupture (MOR) first increases and then declines with distance from the pulp cavity. Our analysis of the composite nature of dentine produced by these gradients indicates that there may be an adaptive explanation with the composite having nearly the strength of the strongest dentine and a work of fracture greater …

Origin Of The Absorption Maxima Of The Photoactive Yellow Protein Resolved Via Ab Initio Multiconfigurational Methods, Pedro B. Coto, Sergio Martí, Monica Oliva, Massimo Olivucci, Manuela Merchan, Juan Andre
Chemistry Faculty Publications
We discuss the role of the protein in controlling the absorption spectra of photoactive yellow protein (PYP), the archetype xanthopsin photoreceptor, using quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) methods based on ab initio multireference perturbation theory, combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It is shown that in order to get results in agreement with the experimental data, it is necessary to use a model that allows for a proper relaxation of the whole system and treats the states involved in the electronic spectrum in a balanced way, avoiding biased results due to the effect of nonrepresentative electrostatic interactions on the chromophore.
