Is Talking Online To Unknown People Always Risky? Distinguishing Online Interaction Styles In A National Sample Of Youth Internet Users., Janis Wolak, David Finkelhor, Kimberly J. Mitchell

Sociology

Abstract

We examined the risk of unwanted online sexual solicitations and characteristics associated with four online interaction styles among youth Internet users. The interaction styles took into account the people with whom youth interacted online (people known in person only, unknown people met through face-to-face friends, unknown people met in chatroom, and other places online) and high- and low-risk patterns of online behavior. The aim was to provide a basis for identifying which youth may be most at risk from interacting online with unknown people.

Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training Faculty Publications

This investigation examined the anabolic-hormone response to carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation at rest and after resistance exercise. Nine recreationally trained men randomly underwent 4 testing conditions: rest with placebo (RPL), rest with CHO (RCHO), resistance exercise with placebo (EPL), and resistance exercise with CHO (ECHO). The resistance-exercise protocol was four sets of Smith machine squats with a 10-repetition-maximum load, with 90-s rests between sets. Participants then consumed either a placebo or CHO (24% CHO, 1.5 g/kg) drink. Blood was taken before exercise (Pre), immediately after testing (Post), and then 15 (15P), 30 (30P), and 60 (60P) min after drink ingestion. Blood …

A Social Relations Model Of Everyday Talk And Relational Satisfaction In Stepfamilies, Paul Schrodt, Jordan Soliz, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examined the intrapersonal and interpersonal mechanisms underlying reported frequencies of everyday talk and relational satisfaction in stepfamilies. Participants included a parent, stepparent, and child from 114 stepfamilies (N = 342) from the Midwest and Southwest regions of the United States. Social relations model analyses revealed that everyday talk and relational satisfaction vary across stepfamily relationships as a function primarily of actor and relationship effects. Stepparents’ reports of everyday talk with the parent (i.e., their spouse) varied primarily as a function of actor effects, whereas reports of both children’s and parents’ satisfaction with the stepparent varied primarily as a …

Evaluating Statistical Methods Using Plasmode Data Sets In The Age Of Massive Public Databases: An Illustration Using False Discovery Rates, Gary L. Gadbury, Qinfang Xiang, Lin Yang, Stephen Barnes, Grier P. Page, David B. Allison Jun 2008

Evaluating Statistical Methods Using Plasmode Data Sets In The Age Of Massive Public Databases: An Illustration Using False Discovery Rates, Gary L. Gadbury, Qinfang Xiang, Lin Yang, Stephen Barnes, Grier P. Page, David B. Allison

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Plasmode is a term coined several years ago to describe data sets that are derived from real data but for which some truth is known. Omic techniques, most especially microarray and genome wide association studies, have catalyzed a new zeitgeist of data sharing that is making data and data sets publicly available on an unprecedented scale. Coupling such data resources with a science of plasmode use would allow statistical methodologists to vet proposed techniques empirically (as opposed to only theoretically) and with data that are by definition realistic and representative. We illustrate the technique of empirical statistics by consideration of …

Big Changes In The Great Basin, Gail Wells

Joint Fire Science Program Digests

Joint Science Fire Program (JFSP)-funded researchers are exploring the ecological functioning of sagebrush-steppe communities in the Great Basin and other places in the dry Intermountain West. Their work is helping managers effectively use tools such as tree mastication and prescribed fire to help these communities become more resilient in the face of invasive weeds. Other research is finding ways to reestablish native vegetation on sites where weedy invaders have pushed the community past the point where it can recover on its own.

Proteasome Activation By Hepatitis C Core Protein Is Reversed By Ethanol-Induced Oxidative Stress, Natalia A. Osna, Ronda L. White, Viatcheslav M. Krutik, Ting Wang, Steven A. Weinman, Terrence M. Donohue Jr Jun 2008

Proteasome Activation By Hepatitis C Core Protein Is Reversed By Ethanol-Induced Oxidative Stress, Natalia A. Osna, Ronda L. White, Viatcheslav M. Krutik, Ting Wang, Steven A. Weinman, Terrence M. Donohue Jr

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background & Aims: The proteasome is a major cellular proteinase. Its activity is modulated by cellular oxidants. Hepatitis C core protein and ethanol exposure both cause enhanced oxidant generation. The aim was to investigate whether core protein, by its ability to generate oxidants, alters proteasome activity and whether these alterations are further affected by ethanol exposure.

Methods: These interactions were examined in Huh-7 cell lines that expressed inducible HCV core protein and/or constitutive cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) and as purified components in a cell-free system. Chymotrypsin-like proteasome activity was measured fluorometrically.

Results: Proteasome activity in core-positive 191-20 …

Soil Morphology, Depth And Grapevine Root Frequency Influence Microbial Communities In A Pinot Noir Vineyard, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, K. L. Steenwerth, J. J. Lambert, D. A. Kluepfel, K. M. Scow, D. R. Smart Jun 2008

Soil Morphology, Depth And Grapevine Root Frequency Influence Microbial Communities In A Pinot Noir Vineyard, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, K. L. Steenwerth, J. J. Lambert, D. A. Kluepfel, K. M. Scow, D. R. Smart

Biology

The composition of microbial communities responds to soil resource availability, and has been shown to vary with increasing depth in the soil profile. Soil microorganisms partly rely on root-derived carbon (C) for growth and activity. Roots in woody perennial systems like vineyards have a deeper vertical distribution than grasslands and annual agriculture. Thus, we hypothesized that vineyard soil microbial communities along a vertical soil profile would differ from those observed in grassland and annual agricultural systems. In a Pinot noir vineyard, soil pits were excavated to ca. 1.6–2.5m, and microbial community composition in ‘bulk’ (i.e., no roots) and ‘root’ (i.e., …

Adaptations To Host Infection And Larval Parasitism In Unionoida, M. Christopher Barnhart, Wendell R. Haag, William N. Roston Jun 2008

Adaptations To Host Infection And Larval Parasitism In Unionoida, M. Christopher Barnhart, Wendell R. Haag, William N. Roston

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Freshwater mussel larval parasitism of fish is unique among bivalves. The relationship is primarily phoretic rather than nutritive; only the smallest glochidia and the haustorial larva grow substantially while on the host. Growth of the smallest larvae suggests a lower functional size limit of ∼150 μm for the juvenile stage. Most Ambleminae, the most diverse North American clade, infect host gills by attracting feeding fish. Many species of Pleurobemini and some Lampsilini release conglutinates of eggs and larvae that resemble host food items. Many Lampsilini and a few Quadrulini use mantle modifications to attract host fish to the female. The …

Fisheries Research Report No. 175 - An Assessment Of The Finfish Catch By Recreational Fishers, Tour Operators, Commercial Lobster Fishers And Commercial Wetline Fishers From The Houtman Abrolhos Islands During 2006, Neil R. Sumner Jun 2008

Fisheries Research Report No. 175 - An Assessment Of The Finfish Catch By Recreational Fishers, Tour Operators, Commercial Lobster Fishers And Commercial Wetline Fishers From The Houtman Abrolhos Islands During 2006, Neil R. Sumner

Fisheries Research Reports

The catch of finfish from the Houtman Abrolhos Islands was estimated for recreational boats, tour operators, commercial rock lobster fishers and occupants of their camps on the islands. Separate methods were used for each of the different sectors due to the variation in fishing activities. Recreational boats and commercial rock lobster fishers were surveyed to determine catches, whereas the catches by tour operator and commercial wet-line fishers were determined from their compulsory catch and effort returns submitted to the Department of Fisheries.

The reported commercial wetline catch for pink snapper, sweetlip emperor and Western Australian dhufish greatly exceeded the combined …

A Cartilage Growth Mixture Model With Collagen Remodeling: Validation Protocols, Stephen M. Klisch, Anna Asanbaeva, Sevan R. Oungoulian, Koichi Masuda, Eugene J.-Ma. Thonar, Andrew Davol, Robert L. Sah

Mechanical Engineering

A cartilage growth mixture (CGM) model is proposed to address limitations of a model used in a previous study. New stress constitutive equations for the solid matrix are derived and collagen (COL) remodeling is incorporated into the CGM model by allowing the intrinsic COL material constants to evolve during growth. An analytical validation protocol based on experimental data from a recent in vitro growth study is developed. Available data included measurements of tissue volume, biochemical composition, and tensile modulus for bovine calf articular cartilage (AC) explants harvested at three depths and incubated for 13 days in 20% fetal borine serum …

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

In this paper, we describe various techniques used to make Intuitionistic Fuzzy Logic Systems amenable to operating on applications with large numbers of inputs. A rule reduction technique known as Combs method is combined with an automated tuning process based on Particle Swarm Optimization. A second stage of tuning on rule weights results in improved performance and further reduction in the size of the rule-base. The entire process has been developed to operate within the Matlab software environment. The technique is tested against the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Database. The use of these tools shows great promise in significantly expanding the …

Mulched Cover Crops As An Alternative To Conventional Weed Management Systems In Vineyards, Scott J. Steinmaus, C. L. Elmore, R. J. Smith, D. Donaldson, E. A. Weber, J. A. Roncoroni, P. R.M. Miller Jun 2008

Mulched Cover Crops As An Alternative To Conventional Weed Management Systems In Vineyards, Scott J. Steinmaus, C. L. Elmore, R. J. Smith, D. Donaldson, E. A. Weber, J. A. Roncoroni, P. R.M. Miller

Biological Sciences

Conventional methods of weed management in vineyards rely primarily on herbicides and tillage. The desire to adopt alternatives to these methods is driven by environmental and economic reasons. Weed suppression and grape yield under mulched cover crop systems at two rainfed northern California vineyards were similar to, and at times exceeded, those under conventional tillage or herbicide management. Cover crop productivity was positively correlated with weed suppression and mulch decomposition rates and seemed to be determined primarily by location and then by cover crop type. The mulch from mowed cover crops averaged 603(± 94) gm−2 at the two sites. …

Climate Change And The Future Of California's Endemic Flora, Scott R. Loarie, Benjamin E. Carter, Katherine Hayhoe, Sean Mcmahon, Richard Moe, Charles A. Knight, David D. Ackerly Jun 2008

Climate Change And The Future Of California's Endemic Flora, Scott R. Loarie, Benjamin E. Carter, Katherine Hayhoe, Sean Mcmahon, Richard Moe, Charles A. Knight, David D. Ackerly

Biological Sciences

The flora of California, a global biodiversity hotspot, includes 2387 endemic plant taxa. With anticipated climate change, we project that up to 66% will experience >80% reductions in range size within a century. These results are comparable with other studies of fewer species or just samples of a region’s endemics. Projected reductions depend on the magnitude of future emissions and on the ability of species to disperse from their current locations. California’s varied terrain could cause species to move in very different directions, breaking up present-day floras. However, our projections also identify regions where species undergoing severe range reductions may …

The Effect Of Poverty On Child Development And Educational Outcomes, Patrice L. Engle, Maureen M. Black Jun 2008

The Effect Of Poverty On Child Development And Educational Outcomes, Patrice L. Engle, Maureen M. Black

Psychology and Child Development

Poverty affects a child’s development and educational outcomes beginning in the earliest years of life, both directly and indirectly through mediated, moderated, and transactional processes. School readiness, or the child’s ability to use and profit from school, has been recognized as playing a unique role in escape from poverty in the United States and increasingly in developing countries. It is a critical element but needs to be supported by many other components of a poverty alleviation strategy, such as improved opportunity structures and empowerment of families. The paper reviews evidence from interventions to improve school readiness of children in poverty, …

Sulfur In Distillers Grains For Dairy Cattle, D. Schingoethe, A. Garcia, K. Kalscheur, A. Hippen Jun 2008

Sulfur In Distillers Grains For Dairy Cattle, D. Schingoethe, A. Garcia, K. Kalscheur, A. Hippen

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Sulfur is an essential element needed by animals for many functions. About 0.15% of body weight is sulfur. It is found in the amino acids methionine, cysteine, cystine, homocysteine, and taurine; in chondroitin sulfate of cartilage; and in the B-vitamins thiamin and biotin. Methionine, thiamin, and biotin cannot be synthesized in cattle tissues, so they must be supplied in the diet or synthesized by ruminal microbes. The sulfur content of most feed sources reflects the sulfur amino acid content of the proteins in the feed. See table 1 for example sulfur concentrations for various feed ingredients.
