Spiderworts: Not Just Another Pretty Face For Science, W. John Hayden
Spiderworts: Not Just Another Pretty Face For Science, W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
Species of Tradescantia, or spiderworts, are handsome plants. Several wild species, including the VNPS wildflower of the Year for 2008 (T. virginiana), can be found in eastern North America and additional species grace gardens, and hothouse conservatories. Spiderworts are not, however, just a bunch of pretty faces. Spiderworts have a long history of service to science, both in terms of teaching and pure research.

Effects Of Active Learning Variants On Student Performance And Learning Perceptions, Abdi-Rizak Mohamed
Effects Of Active Learning Variants On Student Performance And Learning Perceptions, Abdi-Rizak Mohamed
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This paper aims to examine the relative impacts of three different models of learning (collaborative learning, traditional lecturing and process-oriented guided inquiry learning [POGIL]) on student performance and learning perceptions. In a controlled case study, we measured the learning outcomes of 57 undergraduates in a chemistry course taught by the different learning modules, using quizzes and exams as performance measures. In one academic quarter, the collaborative learning method was used exclusively whereas all three models were used subsequently in a second quarter by dividing up lectures into 4 different modules. Student quiz and exam outcomes indicated significant difference between collaborative …
A Self-Organizing Neural Model For Multimedia Information Fusion, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Kia-Yan Woon, Ah-Hwee Tan
A Self-Organizing Neural Model For Multimedia Information Fusion, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Kia-Yan Woon, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a self-organizing network model for the fusion of multimedia information. By synchronizing the encoding of information across multiple media channels, the neural model known as fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART) generates clusters that encode the associative mappings across multimedia information in a real-time and continuous manner. In addition, by incorporating a semantic category channel, fusion ART further enables multimedia information to be fused into predefined themes or semantic categories. We illustrate the fusion ART’s functionalities through experiments on two multimedia data sets in the terrorist domain and show the viability of the proposed approach.
Species Limits And Phylogeography Of North American Cricket Frogs (Acris: Hylidae), Tony Gamble, Peter B. Berendzen, H. Bradley Shaffer, David E. Starkey, Andrew M. Simons
Species Limits And Phylogeography Of North American Cricket Frogs (Acris: Hylidae), Tony Gamble, Peter B. Berendzen, H. Bradley Shaffer, David E. Starkey, Andrew M. Simons
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Cricket frogs are widely distributed across the eastern United States and two species, the northern cricket frog (Acris crepitans) and the southern cricket frog (A. gryllus) are currently recognized. We generated a phylogenetic hypothesis for Acris using fragments of nuclear and mitochondrial genes in separate and combined phylogenetic analyses. We also used distance methods and fixation indices to evaluate species limits within the genus and the validity of currently recognized subspecies of A. crepitans. The distributions of existing A. crepitans subspecies, defined by morphology and call types, do not match the distributions of evolutionary lineages recovered using …
Cloning Of The Neurodegeneration Gene Drop-Dead And Characterization Of Additional Phenotypes Of Its Mutation, Edward M. Blumenthal
Cloning Of The Neurodegeneration Gene Drop-Dead And Characterization Of Additional Phenotypes Of Its Mutation, Edward M. Blumenthal
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Mutations in the Drosophila gene drop-dead (drd) result in early adult lethality and neurodegeneration, but the molecular identity of the drd gene and its mechanism of action are not known. This paper describes the characterization of a new X-linked recessive adult-lethal mutation, originally called lot's wife (lwf1) but subsequently identified as an allele of drd (drdlwf); drdlwf mutants die within two weeks of eclosion. Through mapping and complementation, the drd gene has been identified as CG33968, which encodes a putative integral membrane protein of unknown function. The drdlwf allele is associated …

The Political Personality Of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Aubrey Immelman, Pascal De Sutter
Psychology Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of French president Nicolas Sarkozy. The study was conducted from the conceptual perspective of Theodore Millon’s model of personality.
Information concerning Sarkozy was collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the second edition of the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM–IV.
The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles …

Alien Invaders! Pre-Visit Lessons: Water Characteristics (Grade 6), Discover Mojave: Forever Earth
Curriculum materials (FE)
In the “Alien Invaders!” program, students use the Forever Earth vessel to investigate how quagga mussels might affect Lake Mead. Students collect water quality data such as clarity, pH, and temperature to determine whether current habitat conditions would allow quagga mussels to survive and thrive. Students learn about the consequences the quagga mussels could have on the lake and its living and non-living resources. Using the knowledge they’ve gained, students create their own management plans to prevent the spread of quagga mussels to other waterways.
This activity gives students an opportunity to explore water quality conditions as they relate to …

What happened geologically to produce the landscape we see today? What was the stage like that ultimately produced the Colorado River? What are the processes that are still at work today?
To begin exploring and discovering the answers to these questions, we can look at what’s happened in the past and also examine the clues that are evident on today’s landscape. Lake Mead’s geologic past can be organized like acts in a play. These geologic “acts” represent the area’s significant geologic events. The acts are not equal in terms of time (millions of years), nor is all geologic time accounted …

Metal Content Of Metallo-Β-Lactamase L1 Is Determined By The Bioavailability Of Metal Ions, Zhenxin Hu, Thusitha S. Gunasekera, Lauren J. Spadafora, Brian Bennett, Michael W. Crowder
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
In an effort to probe whether the metal content of metallo-β-lactamase L1 is affected by metal ion bioavailability, L1 was overexpressed as mature protein (M-L1) and full-length (FL-L1) analogues, and the analogues were characterized with metal analyses, kinetics, and EPR spectroscopy. FL-L1, containing the putative leader sequence, was localized in the periplasm of Escherichia coli and shown to bind Zn(II) preferentially. The metal content of FL-L1 could be altered if the enzyme was overexpressed in minimal medium containing Fe and Mn, and surprisingly, an Fe-binding analogue was obtained. On the other hand, M-L1, lacking the putative leader sequence, was localized …
