A Model For Population Firing In Neuronal Networks With Planar Lattice Topology, Charity A. Pettis Jul 2008

A Model For Population Firing In Neuronal Networks With Planar Lattice Topology, Charity A. Pettis

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Masters Theses

The creation, modulation, propagation, and termination of seizures are of great interest to neuroscientists as understanding the dynamics of these responses may aid the prevention of seizures. Three major factors affecting epileptiform activity are intrinsic neuronal properties, synaptic properties and network connectivity. The computation required for the full scale simulation of neuronal networks is prohibitively expensive. To address this issue, we develop a simpler model for networks with planar lattice topology and “small world” characteristics. Using this model, one may examine the effects of connectivity and intrinsic neuronal properties on population firing, a measure of network activity, quickly. To verify …

Psychopathy And Adolescent Females: Does Gender Alter The Relation Between Childhood Trauma And Pcl:Yv Scores?, Trevor Barese

Psychology Theses

A growing rate of violence among adolescent females has led to an increased interest in gender differences associated with the assessment and development of psychopathy. This study utilized a sample of 100 youthful offenders, to examine the role of gender in the relation between various forms of childhood trauma and scores on the Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version (PCL:YV). Correlations were found between certain forms of childhood abuse and elevated PCL:YV scores. Furthermore, gender appeared to alter the predictive power of proposed developmental risk factors commonly associated with psychopathy. The findings indicate possible discrepancies in developmental risk factors between genders. Implications …

Saudi Medical Journal

ABSTRACT Malignant fibrous histiocytoma MFH is an aggressive spindle cell cancer and is the most common soft tissue tumor in the elderly, primarily affecting the extremities. It has high metastatic potential and can spread to various viscera including liver, lung, bone, and brain; however, cardiac metastasis is an extreme rarity. Here, we present a 50-year-old male, diagnosed as pleiomorhphic storiform MFH a of right arm who developed parenchymal pulmonary metastases and a mass lesion in left atrium. Patient had a downhill course and eventually succumbed.

Endometrioid Adenocarcinoma 13 Years After Total Abdominal Hysterectomy And Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy., Ayman Al-Talib, Lucy Gilbert, Jocelyne Arseneau

Saudi Medical Journal

ABSTRACT Malignant transformation is an infrequent complication of endometriosis. As endometriosis is an ectopic endometrium, hyperestrogenism may cause hyperplasia or transformation into cancer. We describe a case of a 68-year-old woman who underwent total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for endometriosis. She was subsequently placed on estrogen-only replacement therapy. She presented with left-sided pelvic mass and shortness of breath. Computed tomography of chest, pelvis, and abdomen, demonstrated right-sided pleural effusion and soft tissue mass in the pelvis. Pleural effusion was tapped and biopsy from the peritoneal mass showed metastatic adenocarcinoma; immunohistochemistry findings favored endometrioid adenocarcinoma. She was treated by 6 …

Prepartying Promotes Heightened Risk In The College Environment: An Event-Level Report, Joseph W. Labrie, Eric R. Pedersen

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Due to the emergence of research literature examining the prepartying behavior of college students, the present study examines students’ varying drinking rates, blood alcohol levels (BALs), and alcohol-related consequences during two drinking events – one involving prepartying and one devoid of prepartying. Two-hundred and thirty-eight student drinkers completed an online drinking assessment detailing their two most recent drinking occasions involving and not involving prepartying. Participants responded to a series of questions regarding quantities consumed on the drinking day and occurrence of alcohol-related consequences. While men did not differ in drinking or estimated BALs, between the two drinking days, female participants …

Our aim was to assess BMC of the hip over 8 yr in prepubertal children who participated in a 7-mo jumping intervention compared with controls who participated in a stretching program of equal duration. We hypothesized that jumpers would gain more BMC than control subjects. The data reported come from two cohorts of children who participated in separate, but identical, randomized, controlled, school-based impact exercise interventions and reflect those subjects who agreed to long-term follow-up (N = 57; jumpers = 33, controls = 24; 47% of the original participants). BMC was assessed by DXA at baseline, 7 and 19 …

Compartmentalizing The Other: Nineteenth-Century Englishwomen, Travel, And English Identity, Amanda E. Williams Jul 2008

Compartmentalizing The Other: Nineteenth-Century Englishwomen, Travel, And English Identity, Amanda E. Williams

History Theses & Dissertations

The nineteenth century was an age of travel. The English traveled the globe for a variety of reasons. When not traveling for military, political, religious, or scientific reasons, they also traveled a great deal simply for pleasure. Regardless of reason, travel brought the English into contact with the Other. As a construction, the Other became an important part of English identity.

Englishwomen were particularly famous for travel. Although they were disenfranchised Others themselves in English society, Englishwomen did not identify with the Other they encountered in travels, but rather chose enfranchisement in an elite "imagined" England. This community (or the …

Factors That Affect Cardiovascular Health: A Review, Sarah A. Buckingham Jul 2008

Factors That Affect Cardiovascular Health: A Review, Sarah A. Buckingham

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Cardiovascular disease is a major public health problem in terms of both high morbidity and mortality rates and large economic costs. Cardiovascular health and risk of disease are determined by a wide range of genetic and environmental factors. This review focuses on the extent to which heredity, physical activity, diet, and psychological factors (including stress) are known to contribute to cardiovascular health or disease. A predisposition for cardiovascular disease can be inherited, but genetic counselling allows the identification of those who are most at risk and an individualised plan to include appropriate lifestyle changes can then be formulated. It is …

The Effect Of Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain (Nod) Proteins On The Secretion Of Cytokines From Macrophages, Joanne Aggett Jul 2008

The Effect Of Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain (Nod) Proteins On The Secretion Of Cytokines From Macrophages, Joanne Aggett

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The study of Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain (NOD) Proteins is a very new area of immunology, with the gene for NOD2 having only been mapped in 2001 (Ogura et al 2001). It holds particular significance for those researching autoimmune disorders such as Blau syndrome and Crohns Disease (CD), as it has been found that a mutation in the NOD2 gene is present in a substantial proportion of CD sufferers, and having the mutation increases a person‟s susceptibility to developing the disease later in life (Economou et al 2004). This review will look at the current research surrounding the NOD proteins and …

Nitrite Reduction By Siderite, Sudipta Rakshit, Christopher J. Matocha, Mark S. Coyne

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Nitrate-dependent Fe(II) oxidation is an important process in the inhibition of soil Fe(III) reduction, yet the mechanisms are poorly understood. One proposed pathway includes chemical reoxidation of mineral forms of Fe(II) such as siderite [FeCO3(s)] by NO2 −. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to investigate the reactivity of FeCO3(s) with NO2 −. Stirred-batch reactions were performed in an anoxic chamber across a range of pH values (5.5, 6, 6.5, and 7.9), initial FeCO3(s) concentrations (5, 10, and 15 g L−1) and initial NO2 − concentrations (0.83–9.3 mmol L−1) for kinetic and stoichiometric determinations. Solid-phase products were characterized using …

Citrus Tristeza Virus: Survival At The Edge Of The Movement Continuum, Svetlana Y. Folimonova, Alexey S. Folimonov, Satyanarayana Tatineni, William O. Dawson

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Science, Ltd Systemic invasion of plants by viruses is thought to involve two processes: cell-to-cell movement between adjacent cells and long-distance movement that allows the virus to rapidly move through sieve elements and unload at the growing parts of the plant. There is a continuum of proportions of these processes that determines the degrees of systemic infection of different plants by different viruses. We examined the systemic distribution of Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) in citrus species with a range of susceptibilities. By using a “pure” culture of CTV from a cDNA clone and green fluorescent protein-labeled virus we show that …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In swine, the most common and severe enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infections are caused by strains that express K88 (F4)+ fimbriae, heat-labile enterotoxin (LT), heat-stable enterotoxin b (STb), and enteroaggregative E. coli heat-stable toxin 1. Previous studies based on a design that involved enterotoxin genes cloned into a nontoxigenic fimbriated strain have suggested that LT but not STb plays an important role in dehydrating diarrheal disease in piglets study, we compared these two toxins in terms of importance for piglets >1 week old with a study design that involved construction of isogenic single- and double-deletion mutants and inoculation of …

Nutrient And Microbial Transport From Feedlot Surfaces, John E. Gilley, Elaine D. Berry, Roger A. Eigenberg, David B. Marx, Bryan L. Woodbury

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Nutrient and microbial transport by runoff may vary at different locations within a beef cattle feedlot. If the areas making the largest contributions to nutrient and microbial transport can be identified, it may be possible to institute site-specific management practices to reduce runoff nutrient and microbial transport. The objectives of this study were to: a) measure selected feedlot soil properties, and nutrient and microbial transport in runoff from various feedlot locations b) compare the effects of unconsolidated surface materials (USM) (loose manure pack) and consolidated subsurface materials (CSM) (compacted manure and underlying layers) on nutrient and microbial transport, and c) …

Sphingolipid Long-Chain Base Hydroxylation Is Important For Growth And Regulation Of Sphingolipid Content And Composition In Arabidopsis, Ming Chen, Jennifer E. Markham, Charles R. Dietrich, Jan G. Jaworski, Edgar B. Cahoon

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Sphingolipids are structural components of endomembranes and function through their metabolites as bioactive regulators of cellular processes such as programmed cell death. A characteristic feature of plant sphingolipids is their high content of trihydroxy long-chain bases (LCBs) that are produced by the LCB C-4 hydroxylase. To determine the functional significance of trihydroxy LCBs in plants, T-DNA double mutants and RNA interference suppression lines were generated for the two Arabidopsis thaliana LCB C-4 hydroxylase genes Sphingoid Base Hydroxylase1 (SBH1) and SBH2. These plants displayed reductions in growth that were dependent on the content of trihydroxy LCBs in sphingolipids. …
