Climate Change: The China Problem, Michael P. Vandenbergh Jul 2008

Climate Change: The China Problem, Michael P. Vandenbergh

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The central problem confronting climate change scholars and policymakers is how to create incentives for China and the United States to make prompt, large emissions reductions. China recently surpassed the United States as the largest greenhouse gas emitter, and its projected future emissions far outstrip those of any other nation. Although the United States has been the largest emitter for years, China's emissions have enabled critics in the United States to argue that domestic reductions will be ineffective and will transfer jobs to China. These two aspects of the China Problem, Chinese emissions and their influence on the political process …

The Enablement Pendulum Swings Back, Sean B. Seymore Jul 2008

The Enablement Pendulum Swings Back, Sean B. Seymore

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Possibly in response to criticisms that the U.S. patent system affords too much legal protection to patent owners, the courts have begun to chip away at patent rights. Curiously enough, the Supreme Court has heard a relatively large number of patent cases over its last three terms, which suggests to several commentators and members of the patent bar that the Court is unhappy with the Federal Circuit's stewardship of the patent system and has, among other things, invited the court to rethink its approach to modulating patent rights. And it appears that the Federal Circuit has accepted the invitation. In …

Law's Complexity: A Primer, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The legal system. It rolls easily off the tongues of lawyers like a single word - the legal system - as if we all know what it means. But what is the legal system? How does it behave? What are its boundaries? What is its input and output? How will it look in one year? In ten years? How should we use it to make change in some other aspect of social life? Why do answers to these questions make the legal system seem so complex? Would assembling a cogent, descriptively accurate theory of what makes the legal system complex …

The Rna Binding And Rna Chaperone Activity Of Sin Nombre Virus Nucleocapsid, Bradley A. Brown Jul 2008

The Rna Binding And Rna Chaperone Activity Of Sin Nombre Virus Nucleocapsid, Bradley A. Brown

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Sin Nombre Virus (SNV) is a member of the hantavirus genus in the Bunyaviridae family. Hantaviruses contain a tripartite negative sense RNA genome with individual segments that form panhandle structures through intramolecular interaction between the 5 and 3' termini. This panhandle structure is recognized at high affinity by trimeric viral nucleocapsid protein (N), and this interaction is likely to be important for specific encapsidation of viral RNA (vRNA) into nucleoprotein complexes in cells, for incorporation of vRNA into assembling virus particles, and for initiation of genomic vRNA replication. N is also capable of unwinding RNA/RNA duplexes as an RNA chaperone. …

Securities Fraud, Recidivism, And Deterrence, Jayne W. Barnard Jul 2008

Securities Fraud, Recidivism, And Deterrence, Jayne W. Barnard

Faculty Publications

Legal scholars have expended considerable energy on the study of high-level securities fraud violators-Ken Lay, Bernie Ebbers, Dennis Kozlowski, etc. There has been little attention, however, to the perpetrators of "retail" securities fraud-the con artists who sell bogus stock over the Internet, orchestrate elaborate pump-and-dump schemes, and create a never-ending array of purportedly "risk free" investment opportunities. Collectively, and in a cruel mockery of capitalism, these offenders extract hundreds of millions dollars from investors each year. In this article, Professor Barnard examines this group of offenders, focusing particularly on those who recidivate-often moving from state to state and scheme to …

Institutional Repository Information

The academic year 2007-2008 represented the third year of operation for the UNL Digital Commons, which continues to be an extremely effective vehicle for disseminating the scholarly output of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and affiliated organizations, as well as valuable means of enhancing the Library’s status as a provider of electronic services to the UNL community. Following are some highlights:

It's What We're Here For: Nurses Caring For Military Personnel During The Persian Gulf Wars, Patricia Rushton, Lynn Clark Callister, Jared E. Scott

Faculty Publications

Military nursing service during wartime represents significant contributions to a unique type of health care. The purposes of this study were to: (1) generate themes that elucidate combat nursing experiences, (2) honor nurses who served by sharing their stories, and (3) permanently archive accounts of nursing personnel who served during the Persian Gulf Wars during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Eleven military nurses who provided health care to American troops in the Persian Gulf participated in a historical study as part of the ongoing Nurses at War oral history project documenting the experiences of nurses during times of …

The Political Personality Of 2007 French Presidential Candidate Ségolène Royal, Aubrey Immelman, Pascal De Sutter Jul 2008

The Political Personality Of 2007 French Presidential Candidate Ségolène Royal, Aubrey Immelman, Pascal De Sutter

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of Ségolène Royal, candidate of the Socialist Party in the 2007 French presidential election.

The study was conducted from the conceptual perspective of Theodore Millon’s model of personality. Information concerning Royal was collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the second edition of the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM–IV.

The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of interpretive guidelines provided …

A Morphological And Hemodynamic Analysis Of Skeletal Muscle Vasculature, Stephanie Ann Wood Jul 2008

A Morphological And Hemodynamic Analysis Of Skeletal Muscle Vasculature, Stephanie Ann Wood

Master's Theses

The goal of this study was to develop analysis tools to assess skeletal muscle vasculature on a network level. In conjunction with this goal, this project also assessed whether the gracillis anterior muscle of a mouse was sufficiently thin to perform a comprehensive morphological analysis, and whether the data generated from these methods would yield reasonable computation of hemodynamic parameters. Horton's Law of Stream Numbers and the diameter-defined Strahler method were applied to assess the vasculature as a whole, and the results were comparable to previous work. The dimensional and branching characteristics of the network were similar to previous experiments; …
