Ideal Men: Masculinity And Decline In Seventeenth-Century Spain, Elizabeth Lehfeldt
Ideal Men: Masculinity And Decline In Seventeenth-Century Spain, Elizabeth Lehfeldt
History Faculty Publications
This article examines how the experience and critique of their country decline led Spaniards to craft a distinct discourse of masculinity in the seventeenth century. As they self-consciously examined Spain crisis and offered political and economic solutions, these same writers also offered a scathing critique of standards of masculinity. Using the figure of the ideal nobleman as a case study, the article examines how moralists, arbitristas, and hagiographers constructed a dynamic code of manhood linked to questions of productivity, male chastity, and military performance. Further, it argues that this discourse was ultimately nostalgic and failed to adapt itself to the …

This article proposes simple medical criteria that can be used by trainers and others for effective medical supervision of young female athletes.
METHODS: The cross-sectional, age-stratified study compared girls 10-17 years of age involved in intensive training in gymnastic floor exercises, trampoline, or badminton. Each sport and/or control group was represented by 40-45 girls. Data included medical history, morphometric variables and observation of biological development.
RESULTS: Gymnasts started training earliest (approximately 5-years-old) and trained most intensely (18-20 h/wk), followed by trampolinists and then badmintonists. Height, weight, body mass index, and % body fat were reduced in athletes, with gymnasts showing …

Bones To Read: An Interpretation Of Forensic Crime Fiction, Ingrida Povidiša
Bones To Read: An Interpretation Of Forensic Crime Fiction, Ingrida Povidiša
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The anthropological forensic crime fiction is a detective genre which is primarily concerned with investigating human bodies. In the hermeneutical process of reading the bones (i.e. studying, interpreting, understanding, embodying), the most enduring record carrier of one's individuality, supported by a rhizoid network of scientific disciplines, the anonymous corpse becomes a personalized victim. The present discussion is based on the novels of Kathy Reichs. Specific characteristics of the materiality and mediality of representation can be traced through a juxtaposition of Reichs' novels with the serial Bones (Twentieth Century Fox, 2005 - Present) and the novel by Max Allan Collins Bones …

Prairie Dog Management In South Dakota, Sandy Huber, Jim Wilson
Prairie Dog Management In South Dakota, Sandy Huber, Jim Wilson
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
The black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus Ord) is a native rodent found throughout the short- and mixed-grass prairies of North America. The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USDI USFWS 2006) estimated that black-tailed prairie dogs occupied about 1,842,000 acres in 2004. Of that, over 411,400 acres were located in South Dakota. Prairie dogs are clearly valuable as a component of grassland ecosystems, providing habitat to a number of plant and animal species. Prairie dogs clip vegetation short within their towns to enhance their ability to see predators (King 1955). As a result, they compete with livestock for forage on the …

Green Tea Extract As A Natural Antioxidant To Extend The Shelf-Life Of Fresh-Cut Lettuce, Catherine Barry-Ryan, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico
Articles
Green tea extract (GT) was evaluated as a preservative treatment for fresh-cut lettuce. Different quality markers, e.g. respiration, browning, ascorbic acid and carotenoid content were evaluated. GT concentration (0.25, 0.5 and 1 g 100 mL− 1) and temperature (20 °C and 50 °C) were tested. Optimal GT treatment (0.25 g 100 mL− 1 at 20 °C) was compared with chlorine (120 ppm at 20 °C). High GT concentrations (0.5 g 100 mL− 1 and 1.0 g 100 mL− 1) maintained better prevent ascorbic acid and carotenoid loss than 0.25 g 100 mL− 1 GT and chlorine. GT increased browning of …
Assessing The Effect Of Product Variability On The Management Of The Quality Of Mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus), Catherine Barry-Ryan, Jesus Maria Frias, Leixuri Aguirre, Helen Grogan
Assessing The Effect Of Product Variability On The Management Of The Quality Of Mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus), Catherine Barry-Ryan, Jesus Maria Frias, Leixuri Aguirre, Helen Grogan
Articles
To study the shelf-life of mushrooms, over 25 batches were subjected to three storage temperatures (T) (5, 15 and 25 ◦ C) and three storage relative humidity (RH) levels (70, 80 and 90%). The effect of T and the RH on the kinetics of quality attributes of the batches was studied by measuring water activity, turgor, colour (L, a* and b* in the Hunter Scale) and weight loss of three different tissues (cap, gills and stipe) of the mushroom. Linear mixed effect models, comprising polynomial models to describe quality kinetics and allowing for batch-to-batch and inside-batch nested variabilitystructure, were built. …

International Engagements: The Characteristics Of International Students’ Engagement With University, Daniel Edwards
International Engagements: The Characteristics Of International Students’ Engagement With University, Daniel Edwards
Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE)
The international student market is important and lucrative for Australian universities and the Australian economy in general. In 2006, nearly 15 per cent of all income of Australian tertiary providers was derived from international student fees, a total of $2.3 billion. This makes international education Australia’s largest service export and its third largest export industry overall. Between 2001 and 2006, enrolments of undergraduate international students in Australian universities increased 43.3 per cent. By comparison, the growth in enrolments of domestic undergraduate students in this time was much smaller at 1.7 per cent (DEST, 2001 - 2006). In 2006, 14.2 per …
