Force Measurement Methods In Telerobotic Surgery: Implications For End-Effector Manufacture, Dean Callaghan, Mark Mcgrath, Eugene Coyle Jul 2008

Force Measurement Methods In Telerobotic Surgery: Implications For End-Effector Manufacture, Dean Callaghan, Mark Mcgrath, Eugene Coyle

Articles

Haptic feedback in telesurgical applications refers to the relaying of position and force information from a remote surgical site to the surgeon in real-time during a surgical procedure. This feedback, coupled with visual information via microscopic cameras, has the potential to provide the surgeon with additional ‘feel’ for the manipulations being performed at the instrument-biological tissue interface. This increased sensitivity has many associated benefits which include, but are not limited to; minimal tissue damage, reduced recuperation periods, and less patient trauma. The inclusion of haptic feedback leads to reduction in surgeon fatigue which contributes to enhanced performance during operation. Commercially …

A Force Measurement Evaluation Tool For Telerobotic Cutting Applications: Development Of An Effective Characterization Platform, Dean Callaghan, Mark Mcgrath, Eugene Coyle

Articles

Sensorized instruments that accurately measure the interaction forces (between biological tissue and instrument endeffector) during surgical procedures offer surgeons a greater sense of immersion during minimally invasive robotic surgery. Although there is ongoing research into force measurement involving surgical graspers little corresponding effort has been carried out on the measurement of forces between scissor blades and tissue. This paper presents the design and development of a force measurement test apparatus, which will serve as a sensor characterization and evaluation platform. The primary aim of the experiments is to ascertain whether the system can differentiate between tissue samples with differing mechanical …

The Potential For Crop-To-Wild Gene Flow In Sorghum In Ethiopia And Niger: A Geographic Survey, Tesfaye Tesso, Issoufou Kapran, Cecile Grenier, Allison Snow, Patricia Sweeney, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, David B. Marx, Gurling Bothma, Gebisa Ejeta Jul 2008

The Potential For Crop-To-Wild Gene Flow In Sorghum In Ethiopia And Niger: A Geographic Survey, Tesfaye Tesso, Issoufou Kapran, Cecile Grenier, Allison Snow, Patricia Sweeney, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, David B. Marx, Gurling Bothma, Gebisa Ejeta

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Information about the potential for crop–wild hybridization is needed to understand how crop genes, including transgenes, affect the population genetics and ecology of sexually compatible relatives. Transgenic sorghum is under development for use by traditional farmers in Africa, the center of origin for sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], but systematic surveys of the current extent of contact with wild and weedy relatives are lacking. We studied wild and weedy sorghums that are interfertile with the crop and constitute a crop–wild–weed complex. The survey was conducted in 2005 in areas of traditional sorghum cultivation in three regions of Ethiopia and …

Biological Monitoring And Chromosomal Aberration Of Workers In Rubber Industry, M. Indra, V. Bhuvaneshwari Jul 2008

Biological Monitoring And Chromosomal Aberration Of Workers In Rubber Industry, M. Indra, V. Bhuvaneshwari

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The genotoxic and biochemical characteristic effect of environmental pollutants generated in a rubber tyre industry workers was investigated on biochemical characteristic of 15 workers exposed for different periods and compared with an equal number of unexposed controls matched in respect of age, sex, social status, period of exposures, smoking habits and drug intake, if any. Chromosomal aberrations (CA), hematological parameters, selected bio-chemical parameters and enzymic antioxidants were analysed . All the parameters showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the exposed sample compared with controls The environmental pollutants generated in rubber industry were thus found to be genotoxic and tobacco smoke was found to enhance the genotoxic effect.

Hydrophilic And Lipophilic Antioxidant Capacity And Content Of Phenolic Compounds In Fresh Khat Leaves (Catha Edulis Forsk.), Yakov Vinokur Et Al. Jul 2008

Hydrophilic And Lipophilic Antioxidant Capacity And Content Of Phenolic Compounds In Fresh Khat Leaves (Catha Edulis Forsk.), Yakov Vinokur Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Khat (Catha edulis Forsk.) is used in East Africa and Middle East as a mild stimulant and traditional remedy. At the same time, long-term use of khat may have adverse health effects. The stimulant action of the plant is related to the presence of amphetamine-like alkaloids, primarily cathinone. In addition, the khat leaves are rich in phytochemicals with health-promoting potential, such as polyphenols and ascorbic acid. In this work, the content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of hydrophilic and lipophilic fractions were investigated in fresh leaves and stems from two distinct genetic forms of khat (“red” and “green”). …

Plant Inventory In Disturbed And Undisturbed Sites Of Pachakumachi Hill (Highwavys Mountains), Cumbum Valley, Western Ghats, Theni District, Tamil Nadu, India, G. Jegan, K. Muthuchelian

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Disturbances play an important role in the determination of species diversity. As an exception, undisturbed areas (VS) possess lower number of species compared to disturbed areas (TS). The richness of family is not affected by disturbance. The number of individuals decreases from undisturbed to disturbed sholas. Lauraceae is the abundant family not respect to the disturbances.

Mistletoes: Pathology, Systematics, Ecology, And Management, Robert L. Mathiasen, Daniel L. Nickrent, David C. Shaw, David M. Watson Jul 2008

Mistletoes: Pathology, Systematics, Ecology, And Management, Robert L. Mathiasen, Daniel L. Nickrent, David C. Shaw, David M. Watson

Publications

Mistletoes are familiar to most Europeans and North Americans because of the Christmas folklore associated with these parasitic flowering plants (33,116). Some may also know these plants are parasites of trees but do not realize that mistletoes are widespread, ecologically important components of forests worldwide. Although some mistletoe species are damaging pathogens, most do not impact economically valuable crops and forest products but actually play key roles in forest ecosystems. Particularly in Loranthaceae, coevolutionary relationships with birds (involving pollination and seed dispersal) have fueled several adaptive radiations, thus producing one of the most diverse and fascinating life forms on our …

Across Imagined Boundaries: Understanding Mexican Migration To Georgia In A Transnational And Historical Context, Michael Kirkland Bess Jul 2008

Across Imagined Boundaries: Understanding Mexican Migration To Georgia In A Transnational And Historical Context, Michael Kirkland Bess

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Mexican immigrant community in Georgia grew at a dramatic rate between 1970 and 2000 as individuals entered the area to participate in the states burgeoning economy. Social networks played an integral role in this process, transferring information about Georgia through family and friendship bonds that stretched between sending and receiving communities across the United States and Mexico. This thesis examines the transnational characteristics of social networks as they influenced Mexican migration trends, responded to economic opportunity and crisis across North America, and challenged government attempts to restrict and regulate the movement of people across international boundaries. Conditions in Mexico …

Mathematics And Evolution, Kacy Heiser

Department of Mathematics: Master of Arts in Teaching, Exam Expository Papers

What is game theory and how does it apply to Evolutionary Biology? Game theory was originally developed to help portray how individuals interact with each other and it was mainly used in the economics and political science fields. This area of mathematical study came about after World War II and was developed by John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that George Price and John Maynard Smith began to apply game theory to evolution in trying to predict the behavior of animals in a species. There are two main evolutionary trends we will study using game …

Satellite Assessment Of Bio-Optical Properties Of Northern Gulf Of Mexico Coastal Waters Following Hurricanes Katrina And Rita, Steven E. Lohrenz, Wei-Jun Cai, Xiaogang Chen, Merritt Tuel

Faculty Publications

The impacts of major tropical storms events on coastal waters include sediment resuspension, intense water column mixing, and increased delivery of terrestrial materials into coastal waters. We examined satellite imagery acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) ocean color sensor aboard the Aqua spacecraft following two major hurricane events: Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall on 29 August 2005, and Hurricane Rita, which made landfall on 24 September. MODIS Aqua true color imagery revealed high turbidity levels in shelf waters immediately following the storms indicative of intense resuspension. However, imagery following the landfall of Katrina showed relatively rapid return of …
