Cellular communication is the basis of all cellular activities and functions. Cell signaling is crucial in the processes of tissue maintenance, tissue development and homeostasis. Errors in transmission or interpretation of these signals can result in the onset of diseases like cancer. Efforts have been made to probe into the communication between cells, and the extracellular signals that cells transmit to each other. There is however, a necessity to understand cell communication within the cellular components themselves and to be able to perform a nanoscale analysis of the cell organelle behavior. Many cellular mechanisms involve processes at the subcellular level, …

Microfluidic Flow Cytometer For High Throughput Label Free Cell Analysis, Sajal Chirvi Aug 2008

Microfluidic Flow Cytometer For High Throughput Label Free Cell Analysis, Sajal Chirvi

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Microfluidic flow cytometer for high throughput label free cell analysis is proposed. Detection of cell morphology plays an important role in determination of state of health and diagnosis of many diseases such as sickle cell anemia, cancer, urine analysis, blood analysis etc. The platform proposed integrates label free cell analysis, microfluidic platform and high throughput imaging. Label free analysis helps in analyzing cells without altering cell/protein of interest and also allows biophysical characterization of living cells. Microfluidic platform used is fabricated from soft lithography. It mimics biological environment due to its channel confinement and is biocompatible. Being optically clear (PDMS), …

Preference Structure And Random Paths To Stability In Matching Markets, James W. Boudreau Aug 2008

Preference Structure And Random Paths To Stability In Matching Markets, James W. Boudreau

Economics Working Papers

This paper examines how preference correlation and intercorrelation combine to influence the length of a decentralized matching market's path to stability. In simulated experiments, marriage markets with various preference specifications begin at an arbitrary matching of couples and proceed toward stability via the random mechanism proposed by Roth and Vande Vate (1990). The results of these experiments reveal that fundamental preference characteristics are critical in predicting how long the market will take to reach a stable matching. In particular, intercorrelation and correlation are shown to have an exponential impact on the number of blocking pairs that must be randomly satisfied …

Subcellular Structure Modeling And Tracking For Cell Dynamics Study, Quan Wen Aug 2008

Subcellular Structure Modeling And Tracking For Cell Dynamics Study, Quan Wen

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The introduction of sensitive and fast electronic imaging devices and the development of biological methods to tag proteins of interest by green fluorescent proteins (GFP) have made a full understanding of live cell dynamics achievable. With the latest hardware technology, such as high speed laser scanning confocal Microscopy (LSCM), it has now become critical to develop automatic quantitative data analysis tools to keep pace with and to fully exploit the functionalities of state-of-the-art hardware. One task of such tools is the motility analysis of subcellular structures. This dissertation provides a series of computational approaches for studying subcellular structure motility. Firstly, …

Contribution Of Dravyaguna To Herbal Materia Medica, Amritpal Singh Aug 2008

Contribution Of Dravyaguna To Herbal Materia Medica, Amritpal Singh

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Dravyaguna is essentially compilation of ancient Indian medical knowledge. Dravyaguna has made significant contribution to the Herbal Materia Medica. The term ‘Herbal Materia Medica’ covers global medicinal plants and is not restricted to one or other traditional systems of medicine. Dravyaguna coupled with ‘Reverse Pharmacology’ can act as powerful tool for discovering cost-effective and potent medicines.

Enhanced Bioinformatics Data Modeling Concepts And Their Use In Querying And Integration, Feng Ji Aug 2008

Enhanced Bioinformatics Data Modeling Concepts And Their Use In Querying And Integration, Feng Ji

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In bioinformatics research, scientists usually face the problems of modeling complex data types and integrating diverse resources. Traditional data models such as EER lack the expressing power to capture many characteristics that are common in bioinformatics data. We first propose extensions to the ER model that allow accurate representation of many of these characteristics. We then utilize these concepts in an integrative system to provide an easy-to-use interface for biologists to construct queries. Our research utilizes the enhanced conceptual modeling concepts to create a prototype mediator for querying multiple data sources. The various relationships between different biological entities are all …

Integrins are transmembrane proteins found in almost all cells. They play vital roles in many biological processes, such as angiogenesis and signal transduction, through their interactions with different extracellular matrix ligands. These interactions are fostered by forming noncovalent bonds with the ligands. Integrin involvement in angiogenic cancer metastasis has sparked the interest of many researchers in the field of oncology. Many cutting edge research works are now focused on studying the noncovalent interactions of integrins with potential drug compounds formulated from peptide mimics and bearing the putative RGD amino acid sequence through which integrins are known to bind their ligands. …

Study Of Normobaric Hyperoxia Effects During Focal Hypoxia-Ischemic Injury In Mice Using Optical Spectroscopy Measurements, Shereen Mohideen

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Optical spectroscopy has seen tremendous growth and development in recent years and has been extensively used to characterize the optical properties of biological tissues. The purpose of this study is to investigate the values of oxygen saturation and concentration of hemoglobin in mice with focal hypoxic ischemia after being recovered in normobaric hyperoxia. Mice at five different age levels were used for this purpose, in order to see the effects of hyperoxia at different developmental stages of the brain; ischemia was induced in them by ligating their right carotid artery and subjecting them to hypoxic (8% oxygen) environment for half …

Mutagenic And Tumor Suppressor Functions Of Dna Polymerase Iota In Mammalian Cells., Lindsey Jay Stallons 1983- Aug 2008

Mutagenic And Tumor Suppressor Functions Of Dna Polymerase Iota In Mammalian Cells., Lindsey Jay Stallons 1983-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Y family of DNA polymerases in higher eukaryotes contains at least four members which are implicated in potentially error-prone replication through unrepaired damage in the genome. These proteins are encoded by the REV1, POLH, POLI, and POLK genes. An inherited deficiency in one of these DNA polymerases (POL?) is the molecular defect in the cancer prone xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) variant syndrome, making POL? the most studied member of this family. However, there exist critical gaps in our knowledge on the function of the other known Y family members (POL I, POL K, and REV1). The goal of this proposal …
