Mercury Emissions From Coal-Fired Power Plants : A Local Or A Global Pollutant?, Paul Franklin Tirey 1961- Aug 2008

Mercury Emissions From Coal-Fired Power Plants : A Local Or A Global Pollutant?, Paul Franklin Tirey 1961-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation tests whether or not mercury emissions from electric power plants are not a significant contributor to mercury measurements in rainfall and argues that the current United States (U.S.) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed regulatory scheme for controlling mercury from electric power plants, the Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR), is an effective regulatory mechanism by using a number of ordinary least square (OLS) and spatial regression models. Two dependent variables are tested, mercury concentration (the average mercury concentration measured in rainfall in nanograms per liter, ng/L) and mercury deposition (the total annual mercury falling at each measurement site in …

Clustered Longitudinal Data Analysis., Ming Wang Aug 2008

Clustered Longitudinal Data Analysis., Ming Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Clustered longitudinal data is often collected as repeated measurements on subjects over time arising in the clusters. Examples include longitudinal community intervention studies, or family studies with repeated measures on each member. Meanwhile, cluster size is sometime informative, which means that the risk for the outcomes is related to the cluster size. Under this situation, generalized estimating equations (GEE) will lead to invalid inferences because GEE assumes that the cluster size is non-informative. In this study, we investigated the performances of generalized estimating equations (GEE), cluster-weighted generalized estimating equations (CWGEE), and within-cluster resampling (WCR) on clustered longitudinal data. Based on …

Evaluation Of Bone Quality Using Novel Image Analyses And Mechanical Testing Methods., Qian Xu Aug 2008

Evaluation Of Bone Quality Using Novel Image Analyses And Mechanical Testing Methods., Qian Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Osteoporosis has become a growing health threat with rising social and economic consequences. The understanding of the relationship between bone mechanical strength and bone structural quality is important for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and the evaluation of osteoporosis treatments. A novel cancellous bone segmentation method was developed to separate cancellous bone from cortical bone automatically. The segmentation was based on the three-dimensional images. The basic idea of the method is that a contiguous three-dimensional non-bone region that is located inside the whole bone region of interest can be defined as the marrow region. Any bone material that is surrounded by …

Disappointment Domains, Quality Of Life, And The Impact Of Mental Illness : An Evaluation Of Demographic Differences., Christina Lynn Adkins Aug 2008

Disappointment Domains, Quality Of Life, And The Impact Of Mental Illness : An Evaluation Of Demographic Differences., Christina Lynn Adkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concept of quality of life (QOL) has been the topic of many research projects, yet several clinically relevant aspects of this concept have been overlooked. Specifically, few studies have addressed the impact of such demographic variables as race and sex on the life domains that have been particularly disappointing to patients with mental illnesses. The current research project aims to contribute to the understanding of the impact these variables have on quality of life, specifically addressing the following hypotheses: (1) Domains of disappointment will vary according to race and sex; (2) Race and sex will interact to predict which …

Multimodal And Print Composition : An Examination Of Instructors And Students Transferring Rhetorical Knowledge In First-Year Composition., Sonya Compton Borton Aug 2008

Multimodal And Print Composition : An Examination Of Instructors And Students Transferring Rhetorical Knowledge In First-Year Composition., Sonya Compton Borton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a case-study of three instructors and five of their students in first-year composition who were making the transition from print to multimodal composition. This study examines the similarities and differences in the ways instructors and students talk about print and multimodal compositions and if the vocabulary they use to talk about each transfers or if they need a new vocabulary to discuss the multimodal compositions. The results of this study seem to indicate that language common to both print and multimodal composition, such as having a clear assertion, was transferrable both between the print and multimodal projects …

Migraine And Patent Foramen Ovale: Exploring The Association And A Possible Treatment Option, Muhammed Yaser Hasan Aug 2008

Migraine And Patent Foramen Ovale: Exploring The Association And A Possible Treatment Option, Muhammed Yaser Hasan

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Migraine is a very common type of headache. With a prevalence of 10-12%, migraine ranks 19th among diseases causing worldwide morbidity. Number of studies have shown a high prevalence of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in patients with migraine, especially migraine with aura. The right to left shunting of blood in a PFO could serve as a conduit for chemicals that would exert a trigger effect on hyper excitable neurons leading to the development of migraine. Furthermore patients with PFO and migraine also show a marked improvement in their symptoms after percutaneous closure of the PFO. This review is a close …

Wavelet Analysis For Aboveground Biomass Estimate In Temperate Deciduous Forests, Xiaofang Wei Aug 2008

Wavelet Analysis For Aboveground Biomass Estimate In Temperate Deciduous Forests, Xiaofang Wei

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ever-increasing concentration of anthropogenic greenhouse gases (C02, CH4, and CFCs) has been identified as a likely (greater than 90% confidence) cause of the observed increase of global mean temperatures since the mid-20th century (IPCC, 2007). The effect of human-induced climate change could be unprecedented and far-reaching. Carbon sequestration into trees and forests is an effective and inexpensive way for mitigating the C02 level in the atmosphere. Hence, accurate measurement of biomass will be of great importance to global carbon cycle and climate change. This study performed a wavelet-based forest aboveground biomass estimation approach in a temperate deciduous forest, the …

Paddlefish Egg Deposition In The Lower Yellowstone River, Montana And North Dakota, Shannon E. Miller, Dennis L. Scarnecchia, Steven R. Fain

The Prairie Naturalist

We used passive egg collectors during May, June, and July of2003 and 2004 in the lower 50 river kiiometers (rkm) of the Yellowstone River, eastern Montana and western North Dakota, to detect egg deposition by spawning paddle fish (Polyodon spathula). Sampling yielded 292 eggs (46 in 2003 and 246 in 2004). All egg collections in 2003 occurred on the descending limb of the spring hydrograph but 99% of egg collections in 2004 occurred before the spring hydrograph began to descend. Catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) in 2004 was about four times that of 2003. A combination of river conditions, in addition …

Intrafeather And Intraindividual Variation In The Stable-Hydrogen Isotope (Δd) Content Of Raptor Feathers, Adam D. Smith, Kara Donohue, Alfred M. Dufty Jr. Aug 2008

Intrafeather And Intraindividual Variation In The Stable-Hydrogen Isotope (Δd) Content Of Raptor Feathers, Adam D. Smith, Kara Donohue, Alfred M. Dufty Jr.

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Stable-hydrogen isotope ratios (deuterium:protium; δD) in feathers enable researchers to evaluate patterns of avian movement and to estimate the source areas of migratory birds. However, variation in feather δD remains inadequately described, thus confounding inferences of avian movement and origin. We assessed variation within a feather and among feathers within and between tracts in three species of immature raptors. Within contour feathers, measurements of δD increased from a distal section to an adjacent, proximal section; the magnitude of δD increase varied with raptor species. Furthermore, contour and flight feathers differed systematically in their δD content. Two explanations for intrafeather and …

Automated Integration Of Biomedical Information For The Support Of Genome-Wide Association Studies, Abhijit R. Tendulkar Aug 2008

Automated Integration Of Biomedical Information For The Support Of Genome-Wide Association Studies, Abhijit R. Tendulkar

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Genome-wide association studies of the genetic underpinnings of complex phenotypes, and human diseases in particular, have been steadily gaining momentum over the past several years. Yet, the number of polymorphic sites in the human genome, including, but not limited to, Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) is so large that identifying the combination of these few which have a significant effect on the condition of interest remains an overwhelming task. The goal of this thesis work was to identify biologically and medically relevant SNPs which could be the best possible candidates for further association studies. In this thesis we present a new …

The Effects Of An Artifically Elevated Thermal Environment And Seasonal Acclimatization On The Thermal Tolerance Of The Western Mosquitofish, Gambusia Affinis, Rebbekah Watson Aug 2008

The Effects Of An Artifically Elevated Thermal Environment And Seasonal Acclimatization On The Thermal Tolerance Of The Western Mosquitofish, Gambusia Affinis, Rebbekah Watson

Biology Theses - Archive

Gambusia affinis, the western mosquitofish, is a very hardy, live-bearing fish that has invaded freshwater habitats worldwide. The success of the western mosquitofishs' invasion is due to its reproductive capabilities and ability to tolerate a wide range of temperatures. The mosquitofish can inhabit waters as low as 0°C and higher than 40°C. Because of this species' eurythermicity, questions have been raised regarding the impact of artificially heated environments on its thermal tolerance limits and whether its thermal tolerance limits are consistent across seasons. Past studies have shown that mosquitofish populations inhabiting hot ponds receiving thermal effluents at steam-electric power stations …

Comparative Thermal Biology And Associated Niche Differentiation Among The Five-Lined Skinks, Charles Matthew Watson Aug 2008

Comparative Thermal Biology And Associated Niche Differentiation Among The Five-Lined Skinks, Charles Matthew Watson

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Three species of five-lined skinks (Plestiodon fasciatus, P. laticeps, and P. inexpectatus) occur in regional sympatry across much of the Southeastern United States. These closely-related species, at one or more levels of development, all exhibit a like phenotype and a high amount of prey resource overlap as documented by published data. Under competitive exclusion hypotheses, these species should therefore not locally co-occur. This study confirms, through analysis of habitat type and canopy cover at the point of capture, that P. inexpectatus and P. fasciatus do not typically inhabit the same forest habitat. In fact, where their ranges overlap, P. fasciatus …

Patterns Of Petiole Abundance And Diversity In Bark Beetles (Scolytinae) Of Cecropia Trees In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Sonali Gandhi Aug 2008

Patterns Of Petiole Abundance And Diversity In Bark Beetles (Scolytinae) Of Cecropia Trees In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Sonali Gandhi

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Cecropia trees regularly shed their woody, large petioles year round. This provides bark beetles from the family Scolytinae with a dependable and stable microhabitat. Bark beetles bore into the petioles, lay their eggs, and feed on the pith (Wood 1983). This study was conducted in Monteverde, Costa Rica. It examined the abundance and diversity of bark beetles between Cecropia polyphlebia in the Monteverde Cloud Forest (1550 meters) and an intermediary phenotype at Bajo del Tigre (1400 meters). It also investigated the percent of petioles colonized, species richness, evenness, and the influence of petiole moisture and length on the abundance and …

Macrofungal Community Richness At Different Distances From A Cloud Forest Stream, August 2008, Elizabeth Place Aug 2008

Macrofungal Community Richness At Different Distances From A Cloud Forest Stream, August 2008, Elizabeth Place

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to examine macrofungal community richness at different distances from the Quebrada Máquina in the cloud forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica. Twenty transects no closer than ten meters apart were tested. Each transect contained a 1X 1 m2 plot positioned at zero, five, ten, fifteen, and twenty meters from the stream edge. Fungi were counted and photographed and weather and substrate type were recorded. I predicted to find more macrofungal richness closer to the river because of water and sunlight availability. However, using Friedman’s method for randomized blocks, I found a Chi squared value of …

Epiphyte Communities In Cupressus Lusitanica Windbreaks And Myrsine Coriacea, Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Casey Halstead Aug 2008

Epiphyte Communities In Cupressus Lusitanica Windbreaks And Myrsine Coriacea, Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Casey Halstead

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Monteverde, Costa Rica is home to a quintessential lower montane cloud forest that supports an amazing diversity of epiphytes. Windbreaks comprised of the exotic Cupressus lusitanica are common surrounding deforested areas. C. lusitanica appears to be poor epiphyte habitat when compared to a native species Myrsine coriacea. This survey was conducted using species richness and occurrence data collected using transparent acetates. This survey examines the idea that C. lusitanica supports reduced epiphyte diversity. The survey determined that the apparent difference in epiphyte richness and community composition is significant. ANCOVA analysis revealed several negative correlations for M. coriacea but not C. …

Species Richness And Abundance Of Dragonflies And Damselflies (Odonata) At Different Elevations In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Christy Conley

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata) are very sensitive to differences in environmental conditions such as temperature, oxygen levels and amount of forest cover (Ramírez 2000). This study focuses on Odonata species in Monteverde, Costa Rica within the Lower Montane Wet habitat. I hypothesized that variations in altitude would influence Odonata biodiversity, abundance and species richness. I used a butterfly net to collect Odonata samples at five different elevations located at between altitudes of 1425 m and 1525 m. There was no significant correlation between altitude and species richness (r^2=0.3331; p=0.450185), H’ (r^2=0.03221; p=0.188120), evenness (r^2=0.03221; p=0.188120), Odonata abundance (r^2=0.03221; p=0.188120) and …

Water Quality Of Streams In The Region Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2008, Shuhan He

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The region of Monteverde, Costa Rica is rapidly growing and the water quality is undoubtedly being affected. The Quebradas Rodriguez, Máquina, and Cambronero were sampled at three elevations to assess the water quality of the rivers according to the parameters used to calculate the Water Quality Index. Two additional parameters, depth and velocity, were also taken. The data showed that there is a positive correlation between dissolved oxygen and biochemical oxygen demand at the three rivers. There is also a negative correlation between total coliform of the aforementioned variables. A large increase in nitrates and turbidity as well as a …
