The Intentionality Of Plover Cognitive States, Chuck Stieg Aug 2008

The Intentionality Of Plover Cognitive States, Chuck Stieg

Between the Species

This paper attempts to clarify and justify the attribution of mental states to animals by focusing on two different conceptions of intentionality: instrumentalist and realist. I use each of these general views to interpret and discuss the behavior and cognitive states of piping plovers in order to provide a substantive way to frame the question of animal minds. I argue that attributing mental states to plovers is warranted for instrumentalists insofar as it is warranted for similar human behavior. For realists about intentionality, the complexity, adaptability and flexibility of the plovers’ behavior, along with its ability to utilize the content …

The Social Contract, The Conservative Attitude, And Antibiotics Development, Eli Weber Aug 2008

The Social Contract, The Conservative Attitude, And Antibiotics Development, Eli Weber

Between the Species

The prevalence of antibiotic resistant microbes has led to a call for new antibiotics development. Due to the irresponsible practices of the medical community in prescribing antibiotics, much of the demand for new antibiotics is suspect. I argue that the social contract, which properly includes human relationships with laboratory animals, requires a conservative attitude toward new antibiotics development. This attitude places limits on the justificatory role of demand in determining whether a particular research project meets the conditions for morally justified research, as defined by Rollin’s utilitarian principle.

Place Attachment And Recreational Constraints Relating To Fire Management, William W. Hendricks, Deborah J. Chavez, Kelly S. Bricker Aug 2008

Place Attachment And Recreational Constraints Relating To Fire Management, William W. Hendricks, Deborah J. Chavez, Kelly S. Bricker

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

This paper presents a study of visitors to the Big Sur region of California during summer 2001. An onsite survey was administered to visitors to USDA Forest Service day-use areas and at developed campgrounds. Place attachment, observations relating to fires and fire management, and perceived recreational constraints owing to wildland fire and fire management are examined. The results indicate that place dependence and place identity influence some perceived constraints and observations of fire conditions. A discussion of the findings is provided, emphasizing the importance of managers’ understanding of visitors’ perceptions relating to fire and fire management.

We developed a novel analytical environment to aid in the examination of the extensive amount of interconnected data available for genome projects. Our focus is to enable flexibility and abstraction from implementation details, while retaining the expressivity required for post-genomic research. To achieve this goal, we associated genomics data to ontologies and implemented a query formulation and execution environment with added visualization capabilities. We use ontology schemas to guide the user through the process of building complex queries in a flexible Web interface. Queries are serialized in SPARQL and sent to servers via Ajax. A component for visualization of the …

Trypanosoma Cruzi In Wild Raccoons And Opossums From Kentucky, Brian Chad Groce Aug 2008

Trypanosoma Cruzi In Wild Raccoons And Opossums From Kentucky, Brian Chad Groce

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Only 6 autochthonous cases of human Chagas disease have been documented in the U.S.A., however, as many as 5% of immigrants from Latin America may be infected with the etiologic agent, Trypanosoma cruzi. The parasite has been isolated from a variety of wild mammals, particularly in the southeastern region of the U.S.A. The goal of our study was to determine if the sylvatic cycle of T. cruzi infection occurs in Kentucky, and, if present, to assess the prevalence of infection in Warren and Barren counties. Raccoons and opossums were live-trapped between June and December, 2007. Animals were anesthetized with …

Association Of Nucleoside Diphosphate Kinase With Microtubule-Based Structures, Kimberly Ann Parrott Mitchell Aug 2008

Association Of Nucleoside Diphosphate Kinase With Microtubule-Based Structures, Kimberly Ann Parrott Mitchell

Faculty Dissertations

Cytosolic nucleoside diphosphate kinases (NDPKs) have been implicated in a variety of signaling pathways that occur at membranes, including those that control cell migration and spreading. This is particularly intriguing, as cytosolic NDPKs (NDPK A and NDPK B) are soluble proteins and do not have membrane-binding motifs, leading to the question: how do NDPK's participate in such a wide array of membrane signaling processes?

Our lab has shown that one portion of cytosolic NDPK is translocated to the ruffling plasma membrane upon activation of both receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and that the Rac1 signaling pathway …

Genetic Diversity In Native And Invasive Rubus (Rosaceae), Ashley A. Wint Aug 2008

Genetic Diversity In Native And Invasive Rubus (Rosaceae), Ashley A. Wint

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Invasive species are an increasing threat to biological diversity as well as a leading cause of recent species’ extinctions. Invasives spread quickly and efficiently, and the U.S spends millions of dollars annually in the control and eradication of these species. More information is necessary in order to predict which species may become invasive. Rubus (Rosaceae) was chosen for study because this genus includes various ploidy levels, reproductive modes, and species that are invasive as well as native.

Three Rubus species were chosen to represent apomictic and tetraploid invasives (Rubus armeniacus), a sexual and diploid native species (R. occidentalis), and a …

A Selectivity Study On The Use Of Caffeine And Theobromine Imprinted Polypyrrole Surface Electrodes, Anil Kiran Kumar Vinjamuri

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are proving to be very effective in development of synthetic recognition systems and are of great interest to those interested in the field of sensor technology. The use of MIPs is receiving considerable interest due to the ability to prepare recognition matrices that possess high substrate selectivity and specificity. Conducting polymers (CP) have proved to be an excellent tool for the preparation of nano-structured biologically selective systems. Polypyrrole (Ppy) is one such CP that is extensively used for the construction of bioanalytical sensors. Ppy has shown great promise primarily due to its biocompatibility and thermal stability …

Geology And Hydrology Of Karst In West-Central And North-Central Florida, Lee J. Florea Aug 2008

Geology And Hydrology Of Karst In West-Central And North-Central Florida, Lee J. Florea

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

The state of Florida is blessed with the highest density of large springs in North America and hundreds of smaller springs where the water from limestone aquifers returns to the surface (Scott et al., 2004). Spectacular underwater caves supply water to these springs. Lesser known are the equally fantastic air-filled caves of Florida and South Georgia (Florea, 2006; Lane, 1986). This paper features these underwater and airfilled caves, explores the impact of changes in sea level on karst in this near-coastal environment, and establishes several geologic and hydrologic characteristics that distinguish karst in the limestones of the southeast from karst …

Experimentation Collection

Despite considerable research, effective and safe treatments for human pain disorders remain elusive. Understanding the biology of different human pain conditions and researching effective treatments continue to be dominated by animal models, some of which are of limited value. British and European legislation demands that non-animal approaches should be considered before embarking on research using experimental animals. Recent scientific and technical developments, particularly in human neuroimaging, offer the potential to replace some animal procedures in the study of human pain. A group of pain research experts from academia and industry met with the aim of exploring creatively the tools, strategies …

A Note On The Effectiveness Of Behavioural Rehabilitation For Reducing Inter-Dog Aggression In Shelter Dogs, Jane S. Orihel, David Fraser Aug 2008

A Note On The Effectiveness Of Behavioural Rehabilitation For Reducing Inter-Dog Aggression In Shelter Dogs, Jane S. Orihel, David Fraser

Interactive Behavior Collection

The effectiveness of a rehabilitation program for reducing inter-dog aggression was evaluated at the municipal animal shelter. Sixteen dogs (of 60 examined) met the study criteria of medium inter-dog aggression as determined by an inter-dog aggression test. These dogs received a 10-day treatment of daily rehabilitation for 30 min (rehabilitation group, n = 9) or daily release into an outdoor enclosure for 30 min (control group, n = 7). Rehabilitation consisted of desensitising and counter-conditioning dogs to the approach of other ‘‘stimulus’’ dogs. Most dogs in the rehabilitation group showed a decline in aggression scores when re-tested after the last …

Seasonal Stability In Late Holocene Shellfish Harvesting On The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett, James P. Kennett, Brian F. Codding Aug 2008

Seasonal Stability In Late Holocene Shellfish Harvesting On The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett, James P. Kennett, Brian F. Codding

Social Sciences

Oxygen isotope determinations from 92 California mussel (Mytilus californianus) shells from ten archaeological sites in central coastal California show relatively stable seasonal harvesting patterns between 3600 CAL BP and historic contact (AD 1769). Coastal occupants harvested mussels nearly year-round and seem to have occupied individual residential bases throughout the seasonal cycle. Interior groups returned with mussels from the coast mostly in the spring and early summer, but almost never in the late summer/early fall when nut crops were harvested. These findings suggest two inter-dependent groups with distinct seasonal settlement strategies: inland people, reliant on acorns and other nut …

A Nonlinear Finite Element Model Of Cartilage Growth, Andrew Davol, Michael S. Bingham, Robert L. Sah, Stephen M. Klisch Aug 2008

A Nonlinear Finite Element Model Of Cartilage Growth, Andrew Davol, Michael S. Bingham, Robert L. Sah, Stephen M. Klisch

Mechanical Engineering

The long range objective of this work is to develop a cartilage growth finite element model (CGFEM), based on the theories of growing mixtures that has the capability to depict the evolution of the anisotropic and inhomogeneous mechanical properties, residual stresses, and nonhomogeneities that are attained by native adult cartilage. The CGFEM developed here simulates isotropic in vitro growth of cartilage with and without mechanical stimulation. To accomplish this analysis a commercial finite element code (ABAQUS) is combined with an external program (MATLAB) to solve an incremental equilibrium boundary value problem representing one increment of growth. This procedure is repeated …

Growing And Direct Marketing Produce: Potential Hazards, Joan Hegerfeld-Baker Aug 2008

Growing And Direct Marketing Produce: Potential Hazards, Joan Hegerfeld-Baker

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Providing a safe food to the consumer requires a process that incorporates food safety from planting to harvesting. Fruit and vegetables growers that market locally are con¬fronted with the same food safety concerns as produce operations that distribute statewide, nationally, or even globally. Growers must first identify the potential food safety hazards related to their operation. Once the hazards are identified, a plan that addresses safe food handling must be implemented.
