Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan Aug 2008

Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan

Agribusiness

The objective of this study is to identify experimental economic tools that can be employed to explain the role of economic behavior in overweight and obesity in the household. We identify three economic experiments that can be used to understand how parent-child economic relationships relate to obesity. Loss aversion experiments are discussed as a tool to understand challenges some individuals face in achieving a healthy diet. Finally, testbed experiments are introduced as a means to test and understand new policies and incentives for better health at the household level.

The Effect Of Classmate Characteristics On Individual Outcomes: Evidence From The Add Health, Robert Bifulco, Jason Fletcher, Stephen L. Ross Aug 2008

The Effect Of Classmate Characteristics On Individual Outcomes: Evidence From The Add Health, Robert Bifulco, Jason Fletcher, Stephen L. Ross

Economics Working Papers

We use data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to examine the effects of classmate characteristics on economic and social outcomes of students. The unique structure of the Add Health allows us to estimate these effects using comparisons across cohorts within schools, and to examine a wider range of outcomes than other studies that have used this identification strategy. This strategy yields variation in cohort composition that is uncorrelated with student observables suggesting that our estimates are not biased by the selection of students into schools or grades based on classmate characteristics. We find that increases …

Detection Of Biomarkers By Mrs Requires Error Analysis, Jeffrey C. Hoch, Mark W. Maciejewski, Michael R. Gryk

UCHC Articles - Research

Using MRS imaging and singular value decomposition (SVD), Manganas et al. (Science 318, 980,2007) reported a nuclear magnetic resonance diagnostic for neural progenitor cells. Characteristics of MRS experiments are known to be problematic for SVD-based methods. Absent detection using alternate methods of spectrum analysis or controls to quantify the false discovery rate, little significance can be attached to their result.

An Efficient And Robust Method For Simulating Two-Phase Gel Dynamics, Grady Wright, Robert D. Guy, Aaron L. Fogelson Aug 2008

An Efficient And Robust Method For Simulating Two-Phase Gel Dynamics, Grady Wright, Robert D. Guy, Aaron L. Fogelson

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We develop a computational method for simulating models of gel dynamics where the gel is described by two phases: a networked polymer and a fluid solvent. The models consist of transport equations for the two phases, two coupled momentum equations, and a volume-averaged incompressibility constraint, which we discretize with finite differences/volumes. The momentum and incompressibility equations present the greatest numerical challenges since (i) they involve partial derivatives with variable coefficients that can vary quite significantly throughout the domain (when the phases separate), and (ii) their approximate solution requires the “inversion” of a large linear system of equations. For solving this …

Supply, Demand And Approaches To Employment By People With Postgraduate Research Qualifications In Science And Mathematics: Literature Review And Data Analysis, Daniel Edwards, T Fred Smith

Higher education research

This report is the first in a project that investigates the demand for and supply of people with science and mathematics postgraduate qualifications in Australia. This report is divided into two main parts: a literature review and a data analysis. The report uses numerous national data sets to present a picture of the supply, demand and employment dynamics of postgraduates in the natural and physical sciences in Australia. The figures indicate an increasing number of postgraduates are completing studies in these fields. However, compared with other fields of education, supply in the natural and physical sciences is increasing at a …

Ten Years Of Community Profiles In New Hampshire, Charlie A. French, Fabienne Lord-Fonesca Aug 2008

Ten Years Of Community Profiles In New Hampshire, Charlie A. French, Fabienne Lord-Fonesca

Natural Resources & the Environment

Through a program called Community Profiles, the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension has helped 57 New Hampshire communities develop a vision for their future and mobilize local residents to act on that vision. The Community Profile process is based on the premise that communities must engage members in identifying and documenting common and deeply held values from which to craft a vision for the future if they are to build and sustain community vitality. The process also helps communities find new and creative ways to pursue that vision by leveraging resources within and outside of the community. These resources …

Rhythms Of Locomotion Expressed By Limulus Polyphemus, The American Horseshoe Crab: I. Synchronization By Artificial Tides, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Christopher C. Chabot, Stephen J. Skinner Aug 2008

Rhythms Of Locomotion Expressed By Limulus Polyphemus, The American Horseshoe Crab: I. Synchronization By Artificial Tides, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Christopher C. Chabot, Stephen J. Skinner

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Limulus polyphemus, the American horseshoe crab, has an endogenous clock that drives circatidal rhythms of locomotor activity. In this study, we examined the ability of artificial tides to entrain the locomotor rhythms of Limulus in the laboratory. In experiments one and two, the activity of 16 individuals of L. polyphemus was monitored with activity boxes and “running wheels.” When the crabs were exposed to artificial tides created by changes in water depth, circatidal rhythms were observed in animals exposed to 12.4-h “tidal” cycles of either water depth changes (8 of 8 animals) or inundation (7 of 8 animals). In experiment …

Rhythms Of Locomotion Expressed By Limulus Polyphemus, The American Horseshoe Crab: Ii. Relationship To Circadian Rhythms Of Visual Sensitivity, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Lisa Bedford, Christopher C. Chabot

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

In the laboratory, horseshoe crabs express a circadian rhythm of visual sensitivity as well as daily and circatidal rhythms of locomotion. The major goal of this investigation was to determine whether the circadian clock underlying changes in visual sensitivity also modulates locomotion. To address this question, we developed a method for simultaneously recording changes in visual sensitivity and locomotion. Although every animal (24) expressed consistent circadian rhythms of visual sensitivity, rhythms of locomotion were more variable: 44% expressed a tidal rhythm, 28% were most active at night, and the rest lacked statistically significant rhythms. When exposed to artificial tides, 8 …

Review Of The Genus Polycheria Haswell, A Symbiotic Group Of Amphipods (Crustacea: Dexaminidae) With Descriptions Of New Species From Florida, The Caribbean Sea, And The Indo-Pacific Region, John Milton Foster Aug 2008

Review Of The Genus Polycheria Haswell, A Symbiotic Group Of Amphipods (Crustacea: Dexaminidae) With Descriptions Of New Species From Florida, The Caribbean Sea, And The Indo-Pacific Region, John Milton Foster

Dissertations

Systematics and taxonomy of the dexaminid amphipod genus Polycheria Haswell (Dexamindae: Amphipoda), whose members are cosmopolitan associates of tunicates and sponges, are confused. This is due in large part to the many inadequate and incomplete descriptions and poorly some executed illustrations, especially for the early studies on the group. Previously, 22 nominal species or forms have been described or designated in the literature. The purpose of this study is to critically review and clarify the systematics of this enigmatic genus. Based on personal collections and on specimens from museums, five new species are designated and 22 species or forms are …

Factors That Are Associated With Students' Standardized Reading Achievement Scores, Cherie Nichole Mothershead

Dissertations

This study examined the factors that are associated with students' standardized reading achievement scores. The participants in this study were obtained from two sources: a national and a regional sample. The national participants were located throughout the United States of America, and the regional participants were from a school district in a southeastern state.

The data for the national sample were provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a division of the U.S. Department of Education, and the regional sample was provided by surveying all fifth grade teachers in a school district from a southeastern state. These two …

The Role Of Teachers In School Safety, Leslie Lee Brown Aug 2008

The Role Of Teachers In School Safety, Leslie Lee Brown

Dissertations

This study examined teachers' perceptions of their abilities to effectively respond to crises on their school campuses. Teachers were surveyed in numerous southeastern states in contrasting demographic areas. Much of the literature addressed acts of violence, natural disasters, and threats of terrorism in schools. Past literature designates urban areas as places where violence has been a more prevalent element of everyday life. Current evidence shows that school shootings and natural disasters can occur anywhere. This shows that planning, practicing, and preparing for crises events are imperative no matter the demographic area in which a school is located. However, there is …

The Emotional Intelligence And Resilience Of School Leaders: An Investigation Into Leadership Behaviors, Aileen Thompson Bumphus Aug 2008

The Emotional Intelligence And Resilience Of School Leaders: An Investigation Into Leadership Behaviors, Aileen Thompson Bumphus

Dissertations

Recent research suggests that leadership in schools and emotional intelligence are related. Furthermore, resiliency has been researched and found to be linked to successful leadership. As a result of these findings and the researcher's own professional experiences, it is speculated that emotional intelligence, resilience, and school leadership may be highly related factors in how one leads a school. The study of this three-factor relationship has been virtually overlooked in the research on school leadership and might prove useful in the recruitment, identification, development, and retention of effective school leaders.

A study of the emotional intelligence, resilience, and leadership of public …

A Metamorphosis Of Thought: Parent Education Based On Transformative Learning Theory In A Title I-Funded Middle School, Ayanna Lichelle Shivers

Dissertations

Section 1118(e)(2) of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 encouraged public schools to conduct and evaluate parent education programs to assist with closing the achievement gap. In an effort to combat the existing problem, the researcher engaged in a mixed-methods study to address four research questions.

A comparative-quantitative study, using the Middle School Parent Perception Survey, was conducted to determine if there were statistically significant differences in perceptions of parents whose children attended Title I funded and non-Title l-funded schools in the following areas—barriers to parent involvement, their ability to assist their children with schoolwork, and the support …

Genetically Engineering Human-Animal Chimeras And Lives Worth Living, Dennis R. Cooley Aug 2008

Genetically Engineering Human-Animal Chimeras And Lives Worth Living, Dennis R. Cooley

Between the Species

Genetic engineering often generates fear of out of control scientists creating Frankenstein creatures that will terrorize the general populace, especially in the cases of human-animal chimeras. While sometimes an accurate characterization of some researchers, this belief is often the result of repugnance for new technology rather than being rationally justified. To facilitate thoughtful discussion the moral issues raised by human-animal chimeras, ethicists and other stakeholders must develop a rational ethical framework before raw emotion has a chance of becoming the dominating justification for public opinion and policy. Derek Parfit’s work on lives worth living for human beings can provide valuable …
