Regulators Of G-Protein Signaling, Rgs13 And Rgs16, Are Associated With Cxcl12-Mediated Cd4+ T Cell Migration, Lijin Xia
Theses and Dissertations
Chemokines are important chemical signals that guide lymphocyte movement within the immune system and promote the organization and functions of germinal centers (GCs) in the secondary lymphoid tissues. Previous studies have shown that GC T cells exhibit high expression of chemokine receptor 4, CXCR4, but that these cells are unable to migrate to the ligand for this receptor, the chemokine CXCL12. This “migratory paralysis” to CXCL12 was found to be correlated with the expression of two Regulators of G-protein Signaling, RGS13 and RGS16 in the GC T cells. The objective of my research was to determine whether RGS13 and RGS16 …

Georgia Public School Board Members Beliefs Concerning The Inclusion Of Creationism In The Science Curriculum, Karen S. Cook, Steve Deckard, Kathie C. Morgan
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Data analysis indicated that School Board Members’ beliefs regarding school board members in YEC had a positive correlation and beliefs in OEC had a negative correlation with the permitted inclusion of creationism in the district science curriculum. However, no correlation was found between school board member beliefs in YEC/OEC and the required inclusion of creationism. The results of this study provide insight into connections between beliefs of board members and the science/creationism issue which may translate into enlightened voting decisions.

"%Qls Sas Macro: A Sas Macro For Analysis Of Longitudinal Data Using Quasi-Least Squares"., Hanjoo Kim, Justine Shults
UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers
Quasi-least squares (QLS) is an alternative computational approach for estimation of the correlation parameter in the framework of generalized estimating equations (GEE). QLS overcomes some limitations of GEE that were discussed in Crowder (Biometrika 82 (1995) 407-410). In addition, it allows for easier implementation of some correlation structures that are not available for GEE. We describe a user written SAS macro called %QLS, and demonstrate application of our macro using a clinical trial example for the comparison of two treatments for a common toenail infection. %QLS also computes the lower and upper boundaries of the correlation parameter for analysis of …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Background: A disrupted cell cycle progression of hepatocytes was reported in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, which can contribute significantly in the associated pathogenesis. The present study aimed to further elaborate these disruptions by evaluating the expression of key cell cycle and apoptotic proteins in chronic HCV infection with particular reference to genotype 3. Archival liver biopsy specimens of chronic HCV-infection (n = 46) and normal histology (n = 5) were analyzed by immunohistochemistry using antibodies against proliferation marker Mcm-2, G1 phase marker Cyclin D1, S phase marker Cyclin A, cell cycle regulators p21 (CDK inhibitor) and p53 (tumor …
Social And Environmental Risk Factors For Hypertension In African Americans
Social And Environmental Risk Factors For Hypertension In African Americans
Florida Public Health Review
This study tests the hypothesis that disparities of hypertension risk in African Americans is related to lead exposure, perceptions of racism, and stress, among urban (Roxbury, MA) and rural (Gadsden, FL) communities. Analysis of preliminary data from Phase I reveal 60% in Gadsden and 39% in Roxbury respondents self-reported having hypertension. In Gadsden 80% people did not know if their residence contained lead paint, compared to 45% in Roxbury. In Gadsden County, 58% of respondents reported experiencing racial discrimination in different settings compared with 72% in Roxbury. In regression analyses high cholesterol emerged as a significant predictors of hypertension in …

Method Of Using Sol-Gel Coatings For On-Line Preconcentration Of Amino Acids In Capillary Electrophoresis, Abdul Malik, Wen Li, David P. Fries
USF Patents
A novel on-line method is presented for the extraction and preconcentration of amino acids using a sol-gel coated column coupled to a conventional UV/vis detector. Extraction, stacking and focusing techniques are used in the preconcentration procedures. Sol-gel coatings are created by using N-Octadecyldimethyl[3(trimethoxysilyl)proply] ammonium chloride (C18-TMS) in the coating sol solutions. The resulting sol-gel coating carries a positive charge. For extraction, the pH of the samples is properly adjusted to impart a net negative charge to amino acids. A long plug of the sample is then passed through the sol-gel coated capillary to facilitate extraction via electrostatic interaction between the …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
The mucin MUC4 is a high molecular weight transmembrane glycoprotein. It consists of a mucin-type subunit (MUC4alpha) and a transmembrane growth factor-like subunit (MUC4beta). The mucin MUC4 is overexpressed in many epithelial malignancies including ovarian cancer, suggesting a possible role in the pathogenesis of these cancers. In this study, we investigated the functional role of MUC4 in the human ovarian cancer cell line SKOV3. The mucin MUC4 was ectopically expressed by stable transfection, and its expression was examined by western blot and confocal microscopy analyses. The in vitro studies demonstrated an enhanced motility of MUC4-expressing SKOV3 cells compared with the …

This work reports the experimental demonstration of single input-single output, multianalyte detection and identification using a coupled array of microresonators. A prototype sensor with four frequency-mistuned microbeam sensors, each coupled to a common shuttle mass resonator, is presented. Tailored localized modes of vibration in this coupled system are exploited to embed all requisite resonance shift information into the response of the common shuttle. Four standard polymers are applied to the microbeams to functionalize them for vapor detection. Toluene and methanol vapors, as well as toluene/methanol mixtures, are detected and identified using a single input signal and a single output signal. …

We demonstrate an in-plane photonic transduction method for microcantilevers, which have been widely investigated for sensor applications. In our approach the microcantilever is etched to form a single mode rib waveguide. Light propagates down the microcantilever and crosses a small gap at the free end of the microcantilever, some of which is captured by an asymmetrical multimode waveguide that terminates in a Y-branch. The Y-branch outputs are used to form a differential signal that is monotonically dependent on microcantilever deflection. The measured differential signal matches simulation when microcantilever rotation is properly accounted for. The measured differential signal sensitivity is 1.4 …

Raman scattering provides valuable biochemical and molecular markers for studying bone tissue composition with use in predicting fracture risk in osteoporosis. Raman tomography can image through a few centimeters of tissue but is limited by low spatial resolution. X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging can provide high-resolution image-guidance of the Raman spectroscopic characterization, which enhances the quantitative recovery of the Raman signals, and this technique provides additional information to standard imaging methods. This hypothesis was tested in data measured from Teflon tissue phantoms and from a canine limb. Image-guided Raman spectroscopy (IG-RS) of the canine limb using CT images of the …

Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum Synchronization And Cooperative Diversity, Kun Hua
Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation research concerns a novel self-encoded spread spectrum. It provides a feasible practical implementation for random spreading codes. The traditional transmit and receive PN code generators are not needed. Instead, the spreading codes are extracted from the user's information bits itself. Comparing to conventional CDMA, SESS completely abandons the use of pseudo-random spreading codes. The code variability doesn't depend on the spreading length like pseudo-random codes.
But because the self-encoded spreading sequence is random and time varying, data recovery requires that the despreading sequence be identical with the spreading sequence at the start of the transmission. Synchronization is one …
