The Impact Of Hurricane Katrina On Public School Counselors And Their Delivery Of Responsive Services, Charles Arlene Collins "Sundy" Barjon

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this qualitative research study was to explore, from the perspective of public school counselors, what impacted their delivery of personal counseling services (responsive services) to students returning to schools in New Orleans, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. Eight professional school counselors participated in the study. The primary research question was: How did Hurricane Katrina impact public school counselors in their delivery of personal counseling services (responsive services) to returning students post-Katrina? To assist in answering this major research question, 10 questions were asked which focused on the participants' relationships with the event and the environment. Taped interviews were …

Ghost Dance In 31 Movements, Anny Ballardini Aug 2008

Ghost Dance In 31 Movements, Anny Ballardini

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A kind of poetry that tries to understand contemporary social and philosophical issues as much as behaviors by rewriting in a poetic language the video artwork of some of the main representatives of modernism and postmodernism. Such poetry is deprived of confessional hues, any personal reference has to be ascribed to a mirroring effect by which the single person empathically absorbs and projects what is conveyed, be it stemming directly from the historical time of the artwork's making and inherited, or alive at the time of its actual viewing. By following a restructuring process started at the beginning of the …

The Solipsism Of Daily Experience And The Unequal Body: The Social Construction Of Ableness, Richard Kessinger Iii Aug 2008

The Solipsism Of Daily Experience And The Unequal Body: The Social Construction Of Ableness, Richard Kessinger Iii

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This is a theoretical and exploratory study of the social construction of the lived experience I am calling "ableness." Through the repetition of behaviors and practices performed by able-bodied people, the representation of the able body has come to appear natural and unconsciously taken for granted, as they do not have to think about their bodies in interaction with everyday objects. I argue that this able-bodied solipsism is heightened in advanced industrial societies where discourses and practices created by Human-Factors Engineering compile knowledge based on the assumption that the able body is the norm. This knowledge is then employed …

Effects Of Interspecific Competition, Salinity, And Hurricanes On The Success Of An Invasive Fish, The Rio Grande Cichlid (Herichthys Cyanoguttatus), O. Thomas Lorenz Aug 2008

Effects Of Interspecific Competition, Salinity, And Hurricanes On The Success Of An Invasive Fish, The Rio Grande Cichlid (Herichthys Cyanoguttatus), O. Thomas Lorenz

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Rio Grande cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) has been established in the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan Area (GNOMA) for at least 20 years. It is often the most common fish species in urban canals and has also been found in natural waterways outside of the GNOMA. The effects and potential for further spread of H. cyanoguttatus is uncertain. My research addressed how extensive the cichlids spread in the GNOMA, how H. cyanoguttatus interacted with L. macrochirus, a native fish, and what salinity tolerance this species has. Surveys on Lake Pontchartrain and in the GNOMA indicated that H. cyanoguttatus is well established …

Counselors' Perceptions Of Training, Theoretical Orientation, Cultural And Gender Bias, And Use Of The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders-Iv-Text Revision, Micah Patureau-Hatchett Aug 2008

Counselors' Perceptions Of Training, Theoretical Orientation, Cultural And Gender Bias, And Use Of The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders-Iv-Text Revision, Micah Patureau-Hatchett

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Counselor educators and counseling practitioners today reflect the future direction of the counseling profession; therefore, their opinions are important when discussing how professional counselors can reconcile the basic philosophies of humanistic counseling with the practical advantages and ethical and philosophical disadvantages that appear to be coexistent when discussing the diagnosis of clients and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV-Text Revision (DSM). This study sought to provide a reflective and concise description of the current perceptions of licensed professional counselors in reference to their training, their practice, and their dispositions about diagnosis and utilization of the DSM despite …

Human Health Risk Assessment For Petroleum Refining Industry Of The Remaining Air Toxics After Mact I Emissions Reductions, Nadia C. Roa Aug 2008

Human Health Risk Assessment For Petroleum Refining Industry Of The Remaining Air Toxics After Mact I Emissions Reductions, Nadia C. Roa

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Inhalation risks on human health for hazardous air pollutants emitted from MACT I petroleum refining industry were determined using EPA HEM-3 Program. Methodology included compiling vertical and fugitive emissions from 2002 National Emissions Inventory for sources inside two facilities in Louisiana, 'Motiva Norco' and 'Valero St. Charles' refineries. Six cases were modeled applying EPA criteria, where cancer risks are 'low' if the probability is. 1/1, 000, 000, and non-cancer risks are harmful when hazard quotient is > 1. It was demonstrated that fugitive emissions have more impact on human health than the verticals because of their significant portion of the total …

Abundance And Distribution Of Early Life Stage Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) In Lake Pontchartrain, Lissa Lyncker

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

I conducted a 12-month study of near-shore habitats in Lake Pontchartrain to assess spatiotemporal variation in the abundance of early life stage blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus). Collections were made using a 1 m2 throw trap and data showed that C. sapidus numbers varied over time and among sites. Two recruitment events occurred during the study. During the first recruitment in May-June, C. sapidus entered Lake Pontchartrain via the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal. In September-October, C. sapidus entered the Lake Pontchartrain via the Rigolets and Chef passes. My data suggest that C. sapidus utilize water circulation within the Lake Pontchartrain as …

Robust And Efficient Algorithms For Protein 3-D Structure Alignment And Genome Sequence Comparison, Zhiyu Zhao Aug 2008

Robust And Efficient Algorithms For Protein 3-D Structure Alignment And Genome Sequence Comparison, Zhiyu Zhao

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Sequence analysis and structure analysis are two of the fundamental areas of bioinformatics research. This dissertation discusses, specifically, protein structure related problems including protein structure alignment and query, and genome sequence related problems including haplotype reconstruction and genome rearrangement. It first presents an algorithm for pairwise protein structure alignment that is tested with structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). In many cases it outperforms two other well-known algorithms, DaliLite and CE. The preliminary algorithm is a graph-theory based approach, which uses the concept of \stars" to reduce the complexity of clique-finding algorithms. The algorithm is then improved by introducing …

Maternity Leave Policy In U.S. Police Departments And School Districts: The Impact Of Descriptive And Social Group Representation In A Context Of Gendered Institutions, Corina S. Schulze Aug 2008

Maternity Leave Policy In U.S. Police Departments And School Districts: The Impact Of Descriptive And Social Group Representation In A Context Of Gendered Institutions, Corina S. Schulze

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

United States federal law regulating leaves of absence for maternity-related purposes pales in comparison to other nations' policies, an observation only recently receiving attention from political scientists. Providing an understanding of how maternity leave is handled by individual organizations in the United States only, a quantitative study is conducted that examines local variation in policy formulation. Employee leave due to maternity is primarily a women's issue and its treatment will vary depending on the socio-political context that the policy dictating the leave is found in. Three main determinants of a policy's level of comprehensiveness are identified as being the political …

Factors Predicting Therapeutic Alliance In Antisocial Adolescents, Tiffany P. Simpson Aug 2008

Factors Predicting Therapeutic Alliance In Antisocial Adolescents, Tiffany P. Simpson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Therapeutic alliance is a robust predictor of future therapeutic outcomes. While treatment of normal children and adolescents is often hard, treating antisocial youth is especially difficult because of the social, cognitive, and emotional deficits experienced by these youth. This study investigated whether differing levels of callous-unemotional (CU) traits influenced the formation of therapeutic alliance in a sample of 51 adjudicated youth in juvenile institutions. Also, we tested whether therapeutic alliance influenced success in the institution and whether this association differed based on levels of CU traits. Results revealed that CU traits and selfreported delinquency were both modestly related to institutional …

Nonaqueous Synthesis Of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles And Their Surface Coating, Ming Zhang Aug 2008

Nonaqueous Synthesis Of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles And Their Surface Coating, Ming Zhang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis mainly consists of two parts, the synthesis of several kinds of technologically interesting crystalline metal oxide nanoparticles via high temperature nonaqueous solution processes and the formation of core-shell structure metal oxide composites using some of these nanoparticles as the core with silica, titania or polymer as shell via a modified microemulsion approach. In the first part, the experimental procedures and characterization results of successful synthesis of crystalline iron oxide (Fe3O4) and indium oxide (In2O3) nanoparticles are reported. Those nanoparticles exhibit monodispersed particle size, high crystallinity and high dispersibility in non-polar solvents. The particle size can be tuned by …

Fmri Evidence Of Group Differences On The Word Memory Test In A Sample Of Traumatic Brain Injury Patients, James Douglas Larsen Aug 2008

Fmri Evidence Of Group Differences On The Word Memory Test In A Sample Of Traumatic Brain Injury Patients, James Douglas Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

The Word Memory Test (WMT) is a popular effort test that requires participants to memorize lists of paired words and repeat them back in a variety of different memory tasks. Four brain injured patients participated in two trials of the delayed recall (DR) portion of the WMT while undergoing fMRI scanning. In the first trial subjects put forth full effort, and during the second trial subjects were instructed to simulate increased memory impairment in order to represent poor effort. fMRI activation from both trials were compared in order to contrast full and simulated poor effort activation patterns during the WMT. …

Stereospecificity In Glucose Consumption: A New Approach To Martian Life Detection, Vienna R. Saccomanno, Henry J. Sun Aug 2008

Stereospecificity In Glucose Consumption: A New Approach To Martian Life Detection, Vienna R. Saccomanno, Henry J. Sun

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

In 1976, the Viking mission made a remarkable discovery: Martian soil was capable of decomposing an organic nutrient broth to carbon dioxide as if it contained live microorganisms. However, a biological interpretation of this finding is in apparent contradiction with the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer aboard the Viking landers, which showed Martian soil to be devoid of indigenous organics. To reconcile these findings, it has been hypothesized that unknown abiotic oxidants, such as peroxide and superoxide, are present on Mars and that they were responsible for its soil reactivity. The objective of this research is to develop a life detection method …

The Effect Of Cody On Stationary Phase Mutagenesis In Bacillus Subtilis, May Yared, Holly Martin, Eduardo A. Robleto, Ronald E. Yasbin Aug 2008

The Effect Of Cody On Stationary Phase Mutagenesis In Bacillus Subtilis, May Yared, Holly Martin, Eduardo A. Robleto, Ronald E. Yasbin

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

We examine the notion that cells in conditions of stress accumulate mutation is in genes under selection via transcription processes. CodY is a global transcriptional regulator in many Gram positives, including soil and pathogenic microbes. In conditions of exponential growth and when branch chain amino acids and GTP are in abundance CodY acts as a transcriptional repressor of many metabolic operons. This transitional repression saves the cell energy and allows efficient use of resources. In conditions of starvation, CodY relieves repression of genes involved in acquisition of nutrients and degradation of carbon sources (genes under selection). Here, we compare the …

Microbial Nitrogen Cycling In Nevada Geothermal Springs, Mitchell G. Chaires, Jeremy A. Dodsworth, Brian P. Hedlund Aug 2008

Microbial Nitrogen Cycling In Nevada Geothermal Springs, Mitchell G. Chaires, Jeremy A. Dodsworth, Brian P. Hedlund

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Hot spring habitats above maximum photosynthetic temperature (73 ºC) are not well understood with respect to nitrogen (N) cycling. Few predictions have been made, and even fewer measurements of in situ activities have been reported. Thermodynamic calculations based on in situ chemical and temperature measurements will be used to predict the occurrence of the specific N-cycling reactions. In addition, these measurements in two springs will aid in an attempt to cultivate ammonia oxidizing species.

Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of The Cyanobacterium Microcoleus Vaginatus In Relationship To The Moss Bryum Argenteum, Crystal Erickson, Lloyd Stark Aug 2008

Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of The Cyanobacterium Microcoleus Vaginatus In Relationship To The Moss Bryum Argenteum, Crystal Erickson, Lloyd Stark

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Biological soil crusts play important ecological roles in arid desert regions. These crusts cycle nutrients, prevent wind/water erosion, and form the basis of food chains and soil formation in desert communities. Primary components of these structures include two desert moss species Bryum argenteum and Syntrichia caninervis, and Microcoleus vaginatus, a cyanobacterium. Our Phase I experiment strongly suggests that in an environment of intense light, a condition of stress to Syntrichia caninervis, there is an increase in shoot regeneration when cyanobacteria are present compared to when they are absent. Microcoleus is a highly motile species and our lab observations of fewer …

Gender Variation In The Prezygotic Reproductive Effort Of The Common Silver Moss, Kimberley Horsley, Lloyd Stark Aug 2008

Gender Variation In The Prezygotic Reproductive Effort Of The Common Silver Moss, Kimberley Horsley, Lloyd Stark

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

The bryophyte Bryum argenteum is a vigorous moss with a cosmopolitan distribution and high tolerance to desiccation and temperature stress. Due to its widespread nature, B. argenteum has been highly investigated (e.g., Chopra and Bhatla 1981). However, very little research has been done on the reproductive aspects of this moss with respect to gender differences. This project will address the prefertilization reproductive efforts of the moss, and look for any differences in the rate of growth and sexual expression between the sexes. The hypothesis to be tested is that males actually have a higher prefertilization reproductive effort than females and …

Decoding The Protein Interaction Network - An Approach Integrating Biology And Math, Ryan Huang, Lingkun Gu, Qingxi J. Shen Aug 2008

Decoding The Protein Interaction Network - An Approach Integrating Biology And Math, Ryan Huang, Lingkun Gu, Qingxi J. Shen

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

The WRKY super family is known to play a major role during the plant stress response and development. My project focuses on the protein-protein interaction of an Oryzasativa (rice) transcription factor, OsWRKY71 which functions as the repressor of gibberellins signaling pathway. Previous literature revealed that OsWRKY71 can interact with itself or OsWRKY51 to form dimmers by using bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC). To confirm this result, we use yeast two-hybrid system. As our data showed, OsWRKY71 seems to suppress the reporter gene expression of the conventional yeast two-hybrid system, so we use a modified yeast two-hybrid, Mating-based Split Ubiquitin System (MbSUS). …

The Search For Ferroelectric Domain Structures In Carbohydrate Glasses Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Louis S. Prahl, David P. Shelton Aug 2008

The Search For Ferroelectric Domain Structures In Carbohydrate Glasses Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Louis S. Prahl, David P. Shelton

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

D-glucose was studied as a possible candidate for ferroelectric domain imaging using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). The large dipole moment of carbohydrates is such that they may show localized ferroelectric domain formation in liquid phase. Samples were heated at their melting point on glass slides and then left to cool to room temperature in a desiccator. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) was used to test the effectiveness of this method, and it was found that the oven preparation created samples with 41% crystallinity, where both a glass transition and sharp melting peak were observed. DTA was again used to find …

Reactions To Infidelity: Individual, Gender, And Situational Predictors Of Relationship Outcome And Forgiveness, Marcia B. Kimeldorf Aug 2008

Reactions To Infidelity: Individual, Gender, And Situational Predictors Of Relationship Outcome And Forgiveness, Marcia B. Kimeldorf

Open Access Dissertations

Infidelity in romantic relationships can be devastating, and can cause many complex emotional reactions. The Jealousy as a Specific Innate Module (JSIM) hypothesis posits that due to differing reproductive pressures over evolutionary history, men and women have evolved different mechanisms to respond to infidelity. JSIM proposes that men, due to fears of cuckoldry, will respond with intense jealousy to a partner's sexual infidelity. It proposes that women, who are certain of their maternity but may suffer severe consequences if their mate falls in love with another and diverts his resources elsewhere, will respond with intense jealousy to emotional infidelity. These …

Compliance Gaining Appeals And Sources Of Influence In Cognitive Behavioral Violence Prevention Fatherhood Groups, Maria Elena Villar Aug 2008

Compliance Gaining Appeals And Sources Of Influence In Cognitive Behavioral Violence Prevention Fatherhood Groups, Maria Elena Villar

Open Access Dissertations

Cognitive behavioral violence prevention (CB-VP) parenting groups are commonly used for the primary and secondary prevention of violence. These groups use persuasive messages that target violence-related attitudes and cognitions, with the expectation that this will result in behavior change. Despite their frequent use as family violence prevention strategies, little is known about the actual messages being exchanged in CB-VP groups and how participants perceive and recall these messages. This study analyzes messages aimed at changing behaviors as recalled by Hispanic participants in federally funded Fatherhood groups in Miami, Florida. Applying concepts from violence prevention, behavior change messages were classified by …

Patterns Of Social Participation: Assessing The Long-Term Effects Of Creating Social Capital, Camille Miller Aug 2008

Patterns Of Social Participation: Assessing The Long-Term Effects Of Creating Social Capital, Camille Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Given the numerous benefits noted in academic research from having social capital, investigators may now turn to looking at what makes a person likely to create it. In this study I examine whether building social capital in high school through participation in religious, athletic, and volunteer activities makes individuals more likely to continue to create it as adults through participation in similar activities. Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study, I employ both multilevel and seemingly unrelated regression models. I find that early participation in religious and athletic activities increases the likelihood of doing two out of three social …

Relative Crystallinity Of Plant Biomass: Studies On Assembly, Adaptation And Acclimation, Darby Harris, Seth Debolt Aug 2008

Relative Crystallinity Of Plant Biomass: Studies On Assembly, Adaptation And Acclimation, Darby Harris, Seth Debolt

Horticulture Faculty Publications

Plant biomechanical design is central to cell shape, morphogenesis, reproductive performance and protection against environmental and mechanical stress. The cell wall forms the central load bearing support structure for plant design, yet a mechanistic understanding of its synthesis is incomplete. A key tool for studying the structure of cellulose polymorphs has been x-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Relative crystallinity index (RCI) is based on the x-ray diffraction characteristics of two signature peaks and we used this technique to probe plant assembly, adaptation and acclimation. Confocal microscopy was used to visualize the dynamics of cellulose synthase in transgenic …

Unicellular cyanobacteria have recently been recognized for their contributions to nitrogen fixation in marine environments, a function previously thought to be filled mainly by filamentous cyanobacteria such asTrichodesmium. To begin a systems level analysis of the physiology of the unicellular N2-fixing microbes, we have sequenced to completion the genome of Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142, the first such organism.Cyanothece 51142 performs oxygenic photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, separating these two incompatible processes temporally within the same cell, while concomitantly accumulating metabolic products in inclusion bodies that are later mobilized as part of a robust diurnal cycle. The 5,460,377-bp Cyanothece …
