Ethnic Representations And Social Integration Of Contemporary French Migrants In Tahiti, French Polynesia, Laura Schuft

Pacific Studies

This study analyzes the discourse on social integration and ethnic representations of French civil servants working short and long term in Tahiti, French Polynesia. Appointed to positions in education, public administration, and law and order by the mainland authority, the attitudes and social interactions of this community compose a dynamic element of ethnic identity formation in Tahiti. Habitually the literary and academic voice on Tahitian culture and history, the discourse of this dominant socioeconomic category is herein redefined as the object of sociological study.

The 5K handicap (5KH), designed to eliminate the body weight (BW) and age biases inherent in the 5K run time (RT), yields an adjusted RT (RTadj) that can be compared between runners of different BW and age. As hypothesized in a validation study, however, not all BW bias may be removed, because of the influences of body fatness (BF) and effort (run speed; essentially the inverse as measured by rating of perceived exertion (RPE)). In my classes on the nature of scientific thought, I have often used the movie The Matrix to illustrate the nature of evidence and how it shapes the reality we perceive (or think we perceive). As a mathematician, I usually field questions related to the movie whenever the subject of linear algebra arises, since this field is the study of matrices and their properties. So it is natural to ask, why does the movie title reference a mathematical object?

Ground-Penetrating Radar And Thermal Modeling Of Active Layer Thaw Beneath Arctic Streams, Troy Richard Brosten

Seasonal thaw depth beneath arctic streams significantly impacts physical and biological processes within arctic stream environments. The impact of greater seasonal thaw for extended periods of time can alter ecosystems that have, in the past, resulted from more prevalent permafrost environments. Effects of climatic change on arctic stream environments necessitate the need for more information on characteristics of seasonal thaw and processes that occur within the thawed layer. Multiple ground-penetrating radar (GPR) methods and one-dimensional (1D) thermal modeling were used to investigate seasonal thaw beneath arctic streams and determine the dominant thermal process.

BACKGROUND:

Aberrations in DNA methylation patterns promote changes in gene expression patterns and are invariably associated with neoplasia. DNA methylation is carried out and maintained by several DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) among which DNMT1 functions as a maintenance methylase while DNMT3a and 3b serve as de novo enzymes. Although DNMT3b has been shown to preferentially target the methylationof DNA sequences residing in pericentric heterochromatin whether it is involved in gene specific methylation remains an open question. To address this issue, we have silenced the expression of DNMT3b in the prostate-derived PC3 cells through RNA interference and subsequently studied the accompanied cellular …
