Influenza infection remains a significant cause of pulmonary morbidity and mortality worldwide, with the highest hospitalization and mortality rates occurring in infants and elder adults. The mechanisms inducing this considerable morbidity and mortality are largely unknown. To address this question, we established a neonatal mouse model of influenza infection to test the hypothesis that the immaturity of the neonatal immune system is responsible for the severe pulmonary disease observed in infants. Seven-day-old mice were infected with influenza A virus (H1N1) and allowed to mature. As adults, these mice showed enhanced airway hyperreactivity, chronic pulmonary inflammation, and diffuse emphysematous-type lesions in …

Wtse, An Avre-Family Type Iii Effector Protein Of Pantoea Stewartii Subsp. Stewartii, Causes Cell Death In Non-Host Plants, Jong Hyun Ham, Doris Majerczak, Sophie Ewert, Mysore Venkatarau Sreerekha, David Mackey, David Coplin

Faculty Publications

Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Pnss) causes Stewart's bacterial wilt of sweet corn and leaf blight of maize. The pathogenicity of Pnss depends on synthesis of extracellular polysaccharide and an Hrp type III secretion system. WtsE, a type III secreted effector protein, is essential for the virulence of Pnss on corn. It belongs to the AvrE family of effectors, which includes DspA/E from Erwinia amylovora and AvrE1 from Pseudomonas syringae. Previously, WtsE was shown to cause disease-associated cell death in its host plant, sweet corn. Here, we examine the biological activity of WtsE in several non-host plants. WtsE induced cell death …

Identification Of Repeat Structure In Large Genomes Using Repeat Probability Clouds, Wanjun Gu, Todd A. Castoe, Dale J. Hedges, Mark A. Batzer, David D. Pollock Sep 2008

Identification Of Repeat Structure In Large Genomes Using Repeat Probability Clouds, Wanjun Gu, Todd A. Castoe, Dale J. Hedges, Mark A. Batzer, David D. Pollock

Faculty Publications

The identification of repeat structure in eukaryotic genomes can be time-consuming and difficult because of the large amount of information (∼3 × 109 bp) that needs to be processed and compared. We introduce a new approach based on exact word counts to evaluate, de novo, the repeat structure present within large eukaryotic genomes. This approach avoids sequence alignment and similarity search, two of the most time-consuming components of traditional methods for repeat identification. Algorithms were implemented to efficiently calculate exact counts for any length oligonucleotide in large genomes. Based on these oligonucleotide counts, oligonucleotide excess probability clouds, or "P-clouds," were …

Iron Oxide Deposits Associated With The Ectosymbiotic Bacteria In The Hydrothermal Vent Shrimp Rimicaris Exoculata, Laure Corbari, Marie Anne Cambon-Bonavita, Gary J. Long, Fernande Grandjean, Magali Zbinden, Françoise Gaill, Philippe Compère

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Rimicaris exoculata shrimp is considered as a primary consumer that dominates the fauna of most Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) hydrothermal ecosystems. These shrimps harbour in their gill chambers an important ectosymbiotic community of chemoautotrophic bacteria associated with iron oxide deposits. The structure and elemental composition of the mineral concretions associated with these bacteria have been investigated by using LM, ESEM, TEM STEM and EDX microanalyses. The nature of the iron oxides in shrimps obtained from the Rainbow vent field has also been determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy. This multidisciplinary approach has revealed that the three layers of mineral crust in the …

Assessment Of The Effects Of Increasing Levels Of Physiological Realism In The Computational Fluid Dynamics Analyses Of Implanted Coronary Stents, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle Sep 2008

Assessment Of The Effects Of Increasing Levels Of Physiological Realism In The Computational Fluid Dynamics Analyses Of Implanted Coronary Stents, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle

Conference Papers

Coronary stent implantation can improve blood flow in an artery that has been narrowed by the build up of arterial plaque. However, the implantation of the stent will change the geometry of the vessel wall. The haemodynamic effects of the stents presence and alteration of the vessel wall are unclear. The redistribution of flow induced vessel wall shear stress (WSS) and wall shear stress gradient (WSSG) may directly contribute to restenosis (re-blockage). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used extensively to identify these parameters in stented vessels. However, simplifications to the model of the stented artery are common. In this paper, …

Lime For High Rainfall Pastures: Above 800mm Average Annual Rainfall, Mike Bolland, Bill Russell Sep 2008

Lime For High Rainfall Pastures: Above 800mm Average Annual Rainfall, Mike Bolland, Bill Russell

Bulletins 4000 -

Conventional agriculture acidifies soil. As your soil becomes more acid, productive pasture species disappear and are replaced by species of low agricultural value. It is a waste of money to apply expensive fertiliser to pastures which are inherently poorly productive because they are growing in an acid soil.

The paper examines the types of lime available, how to select lime for quality and when and how much lime to apply. Maganese toxity and aluminum toxicity are examine, how to test your soil, and affect of soil acidity on bacteria and other microorgansims.

Mutagenicity And Carcinogenicity Prediction Of Compounds From Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamom Maton), S. Balaji, B. Chempakam

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

In silico approaches are currently not employed in any of the spices to study the toxicity. The aim of this study is to find the most efficacious molecule which does not have any adverse effects. In the present study one hundred and eight compounds from cardamom were used to predict mutagenicity and carcinogenecity. The results of these studies indicate that only four compounds are non-mutagenic and non-carcinogenic. The rest of the compounds do not have the characteristics necessary to become therapeutic agents have been identified early and prevented (i.e., the fail early, fail fast approach) from entering the drug development …

Phytochemical Survey Of Orchids In The Tirunelveli Hills Of South India, Muthiah Maridass, M. I. Zahir Hussain, G. Raju

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Phytochemical investigations of the orchid family were performed for alkaloid constituents, identification and inheritance of flower pigments in the species of ornamental value. Apart from the presence of chlorophyll in green flowered forms and carotenoids in some yellow flowers, anthocyanidins are predominated. The cyaniding, pelargonidin and petunidin, and complex mixture of their glycosides and acylated derivatives are often present in a single flower. In the present investigation of the preliminary phytochemical study of leaf flavanoids contents of Orchidiaceae family members in the Tirunelveli hills of South India were analyzed and surveyed.

The Indirect Effects Of Cheatgrass Invasion: Grasshopper Herbivory On Native Grasses Determined By Neighboring Cheatgrass, Julie Beckstead, Susan E. Meyer, Carol K. Augsperger Sep 2008

The Indirect Effects Of Cheatgrass Invasion: Grasshopper Herbivory On Native Grasses Determined By Neighboring Cheatgrass, Julie Beckstead, Susan E. Meyer, Carol K. Augsperger

Biology Faculty Scholarship

Invasion biology has focused on the direct effects of plant invasion and has generally overlooked indirect interactions. Here we link theories of invasion biology and herbivory to explore an indirect effect of one invading species on associational herbivory (the effect of neighboring plants on herbivory) of native species. We studied a Great Basin shadscale (Atriplex confertifolia)-bunchgrass community in western Utah, U.S.A.This community is dominated by native bunchgrasses, invaded by cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), and home to large populations of grasshoppers (Xanthippus corallipes and Melanoplus confusus). Observations of associational herbivory provided support for the attractant-source hypothesis for one of two native species …

Temperature Affects Microbial Decomposition Of Cadavers (Rattus Rattus) In Contrasting Soils, David O. Carter, David Yellowlees, Mark Tibbett Sep 2008

Temperature Affects Microbial Decomposition Of Cadavers (Rattus Rattus) In Contrasting Soils, David O. Carter, David Yellowlees, Mark Tibbett

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The ecology of soils associated with dead mammals (i.e. cadavers) is poorly understood. Although temperature and soil type are well known to influence the decomposition of other organic resource patches, the effect of these variables on the degradation of cadavers in soil has received little experimental investigation. To address this, cadavers of juvenile rats (Rattus rattus) were buried in one of three contrasting soils (Sodosol, Rudosol, and Vertosol) from tropical savanna ecosystems in Queensland, Australia and incubated at 29 °C, 22 °C, or 15 °C in a laboratory setting. Cadavers and soils were destructively sampled at intervals of …
