Regulation Of Hsc Self-Renewal And Differentiation By Pumilio Proteins, Jennifer Zayas

Evolutionarily conserved Pumilio (Pum) RNA-binding proteins act as translational repressors during embryo development and cell fate specification. Previous work in the lab has shown that over-expression of Pum2 (Pum2-EML) supports maintenance and suppresses mutilineage differentiation of murine multipotent HSC/MPP-like cell line EML. The subsequent analysis of HSC markers and functional analysis has revealed that wt EML cells share the LKS CD34 positive phenotype, whereas the majority Pum2-EML cells are similar to LKS CD34 negative. The CD34 positive wt EML cells can be divided into CD34low, CD34med and CD34high subpopulations, whereas Pum2-EML CD34 positive cells correspond to CD34low subpopulation. Colony forming …

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among all gynecological malignancies in Western countries. Although therapy for ovarian cancer has been greatly improved in the past 20 years, the overall survival for patients with advanced ovarian cancer has not changed signiWcantly. The poor survival rates in patients with advanced ovarian cancer are due both to late diagnosis and to lack of eVective drugs for the majority of patients who have a relapse and develop resistance to current chemotherapy agents used for ovarian cancer. Application Of Shortest-Path Network Analysis To Identify Genes That Modulate Longevity In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jr Managbanag

Shortest-path network analysis was employed to identify novel genes that modulate longevity in the baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Based upon a set of previously reported genes associated with increased life span, a shortest path network algorithm was applied to a pre-existing protein-protein interaction dataset in order to construct a shortest-path longevity network. To validate this network, the replicative aging potential of 88 single gene deletion strains corresponding to predicted components of the shortest path longevity network was determined. The 88 single-gene deletion strains identified by a network approach are significantly enriched for mutation conferring both increased and decreased replicative life …

This research demonstrates chemical reactions of RNA molecules that allow them to increase in length, from non-catalytic oligomers to complex RNA enzymes. The purpose of this research was to explain the origin of large RNA polymers required for life to begin in the proposed "RNA World". To do this, the Azoarcus group I ribozyme was engineered to catalyze phosphodiester exchange reactions that result in the recombination of short oligomer substrates marked by ^5'CAU^3' recognition tags.

Adaptive Predictive Control Using Neural Network For A Class Of Pure-Feedback Systems In Discrete-Time, Ss Ge, C Yang, Th Lee

In this paper, adaptive neural network (NN) control is investigated for a class of nonlinear pure-feedback discrete-time systems. By using prediction functions of future states, the pure-feedback system is transformed into an n -step-ahead predictor, based on which state feedback NN control is synthesized. Next, by investigating the relationship between outputs and states, the system is transformed into an input-output predictor model, and then, output feedback control is constructed. To overcome the difficulty of nonaffine appearance of the control input, implicit function theorem is exploited in the control design and NN is employed to approximate the unknown function in the …

Planktonic and benthic foraminiferal assemblages from an Upper Albian to Lower Turonian interval in the East Carpathians were investigated in a well and in an outcrop from the Stoeneşti – Cetăţeni area (Dâmboviţa Valley), Romania. The benthic foraminiferal extinction that occurred at the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary and the first stage of the faunal recovery are documented here for the first time in the Romanian Carpathians. Bioevents and changes in the foraminiferal record from this area show that low oxygen conditions occured already in the Late Cenomanian, as suggested by the presence of radiolarian-rich shales. This paper presents the results of macrofossil analysis from the Steregoiu sequence in the Gutaiului Mountains covering the last 8,000 cal BP. The studied peat deposit is characterized by abundant macrofossils. Their diversity is, however, low with most macrofossils coming from plants that grew on the mire and in the forest surrounding the basin (Carex spp., Cyperus sp., Urtica dioica, Potentilla erecta, Filipendula ulmaria, Rubus idaeus, Lycopus europaeus). The concentration of Picea abies macrofossils correlates partially well with its pollen percentages, and only when it has been present on the bog surface. Objective: To study prospectively the association of coffee intake with incident diabetes in the Puerto Rico Heart Health Program cohort, comprising 9824 middle-aged men (aged 35-79 years). Methods: Of 9824 men, 3869 did not provide a fasting blood sample at baseline, 1095 had prevalent diabetes and 131 were not given fasting glucose tests at any subsequent study visit. Thus, the present analysis includes 4685 participants. Diabetes was ascertained at baseline and at two study visits between 1968 and 1975 using fasting glucose tests and self-reports of physician-diagnosed diabetes or use of insulin or hypoglycaemic medication.
