Application Of Optimization Techniques To Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded Waveform Design, Todd W. Beard

A design process is demonstrated for a coexistent scenario containing Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded (SMSE) and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) signals. Coexistent SMSE-DSSS designs are addressed under both perfect and imperfect DSSS code tracking conditions using a non-coherent delay-lock loop (DLL). Under both conditions, the number of SMSE subcarriers and subcarrier spacing are the optimization variables of interest. For perfect DLL code tracking conditions, the GA and RSM optimization processes are considered independently with the objective function being end-to-end DSSS bit error rate. A hybrid GA-RSM optimization process is used under more realistic imperfect DLL code tracking conditions. In …

A Large Volume Striped Bass Incubation Chamber: Design And Comparison With A Traditional Method, Chris Harper

I conducted a comparative study of a new jar design (experimental chamber) with a standard egg incubation vessel (McDonald jar). Experimental chambers measured 0.4 m in diameter by 1.3 m in height and had a volume of 200 L. McDonald hatching jars measured 16 cm in diameter by 45 cm in height and had a volume of 6 L. Post-hatch survival was estimated at 48, 96 and 144 h. Stocking rates resulted in an average egg density of 21.9 eggs ml-1 (range = 21.6 - 22.1) for McDonald jars and 10.9 eggs ml-1 (range = 7.0 - 16.8) for experimental …

Effect Of Nitrification On Lead Corrosion In Chloraminated Distribution Systems, Michael Shade

Water treatment facilities have been shifting from using chlorination to chloramination as a primary disinfectant since 2004, when the EPA enacted the Disinfectants/Disinfection By-Products (D/DBP) Rule mandating the decrease of DBPs. After the switch to chloramination, an unexpected lead concentration increase was detected in the Washington, D. C., and Greenville, NC water systems. These increases may be associated with the switch from chlorination to chloramination. Decomposition of chloramines results in higher ammonia loading to drinking water distribution systems, which may increase nitrification. Nitrifying bacteria may facilitate lead corrosion via two mechanisms: use of nitrite or nitrate as an alternative electron …

Connectivity And Genetic Structure In Coral Reef Ecosystems: Modeling And Analysis, Johnathan T. Kool

This dissertation examines aspects of the relationship between connectivity and the development of genetic structure in subdivided coral reef populations using both simulation and algebraic methods. The first chapter develops an object-oriented, individual based method of simulating the dynamics of genes in subdivided populations. The model is then used to investigate how changes to different components of population structure (e.g., connectivity, birth rate, population size) influence genetic structure through the use of autocorrelation analysis. The autocorrelograms also demonstrate how relationships between populations change at different spatial and temporal scales. The Life Cycles Of Claassenia Sabulosa And Hesperoperla Pacifica (Plecoptera: Perlidae) In Two Colorado Streams, Richard A. Thorp, Boris C. Kondratieff, Emily C. Thorp, Patrick B. Odenbeck, Michael J. Jarrett

Western North American Naturalist

We compared the life cycles of Claassenia sabulosa (Banks 1900) and Hesperoperla pacifica (Banks 1900) (Plecoptera: Perlidae) in allopatry and sympatry by studying 4 populations in 3 streams of the South Platte River Watershed, Colorado. We estimated 2-year life cycles for both C. sabulosa and H. pacifica in allopatry and sympatry. Evidence of egg diapausing and extended larval recruitment was noted for both species in allopatry and sympatry. There were no apparent differences in larval growth, larval recruitment, or adult emergence periodicity between allopatric and sympatric populations of C. sabulosa. In contrast, allopatric and sympatric H. pacifica populations exhibited differences …

A 2000-Year Environmental History Of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Inferred From Lake-Sediment Records, Karen Jacobs, Cathy Whitlock

Western North American Naturalist

Little is known about the disturbance history of low-elevation forest and steppe vegetation in the western United States, nor about the relative importance of climate and human activity in shaping present-day plant communities. We analyzed pollen and high-resolution macroscopic charcoal records spanning the last 2100, 1000, and 550 cal years from 3 small lakes in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to reconstruct the vegetation and fire history along a gradient from steppe to dry forest. The pollen data suggest little change in vegetation in the last 2 millennia, aside from a long-term trend toward more forest at the expense of steppe. One …
