Cellular Immune Responses Before And During S2 – Complex Immunotherapy In Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Batool Mutar Mahdi

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Host immune response especially cell mediated immunity play an important role in the origin and progression of head and neck cancer. METHODS: A total of 63 terminal untreatable stage IV head and neck cancer patients were investigated for cellular immune response before and during S2- complex (synthetic -2) immunotherapy from 1992-1994 in Iraqi Medical Collage – Al-Nahrain University. Cellular immunity were investigated including leukocytes, lymphocytes, T and B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes subsets CD4+ , CD8+ and HLA-DR + cells using monoclonal antibodies by indirect immunoflourescense test. Movement Strategies Of Seed Predators As Determinants Of Plant Recruitment Patterns, Lorenzo Mari, Renato Casagrandi, Marino Gatto, Tal Avgar, Ran Nathan

Plant recruitment in nature exhibits several distinctive patterns ranging from hump shaped to monotonically decreasing with distance from the seed source. We investigate the role of post-dispersal seed predation in shaping these patterns, introducing a new mechanistic model that explicitly accounts for the movement strategy used by seed eaters. The model consists of two partial differential equations describing the spatiotemporal dynamics of both seed and predator densities. The movement strategy is defined by how predators move in response to the different cues they can use to search for seeds. These cues may be seed density, seed intake, distance from the …

Ultrasound covers a broad range of applications from underwater exploration and nondestructive evaluation of materials to medical diagnosis and treatment. The ultrasonic transducer plays an important role in determining the resolution, sensitivity, as well as other critical diagnostic capabilities of an ultrasonic detection or imaging system. Currently piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers dominate the market. The device performance of the piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer in medical applications is limited by the material properties and related electrical and acoustic impedance match issues. The Town of Nottingham Conservation Commission (NCC) in New Hampshire purchased water testing equipment for monitoring the North and Little Rivers as part of the New Hampshire Volunteer River Assessment Program (VRAP). The equipment enabled NCC and Lamprey River Watershed Association (LRWA) volunteer water samplers to efficiently monitor water quality on the two rivers twice a month from May 2007 to June 2008.

The miscanthus mealybug, Miscanthicoccus miscanthi (Takahashi) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is newly reported as prey for the lady beetle Hyperaspis paludicola Schwarz (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) at the Regan National Airport, Washington, DC (northern range extension). A new armored scale prey, Diaspidiotus ancyclus (Putnam) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), for the lady beetle Microweisea misella (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is recorded. A range extension for Hyperaspis paludicola is reported.

The pyrgine genus Porphyrogenes Watson, 1893 (Hesperiidae) is discussed, especially as it occurs in central Rondônia, Brazil. Of eleven species of Porphyrogenes found in Rondônia, four (P. specularis, P. convexus, P. sparus, and P. spadix) are described as new species. Biological details of the genus are discussed. An additional five new species of Porphyrogenes (P. spina, P. sporta, P. splendidus, P. simulator, and P. speciosus) are described from elsewhere. Porphyrogenes cervinus (Plötz, 1883), new synonym of Porphyrogenes ferruginea (Plötz, 1883), reinstated status, is raised from a subspecies of Porphyrogenes despecta (Butler, 1870) to species-level. Attempts to clarify the identity of obscure New Zealand spider taxa have lead to the conclusion that six species are best treated as nomina dubia [Philodromus rubrofrontus Urquhart 1891 (Philodromidae); Dictyna urquhartii Roewer 1951, (Dictynidae); Linyphia albiapiata Urquhart 1891, Linyphia cruenta Urquhart 1891, Linyphia multicolor Urquhart 1891, Linyphia pellos Urquhart 1891 (Linyphiidae)]. Superluminescent diodes (SLD) with a center wavelength of 1.2μm are of interest for use in medical imaging of skin tissue especially in the field of optical coherence tomography (OCT). In this thesis a ridge-waveguide multi-section quantum dot SLD that emits at 1.2μm with a bandwidth greater than 100nm and a power greater than 0.2mW is presented. The multi-section SLD allows simultaneous tuning of the ground state emission and excited state emission, resulting in wide bandwidth and high power. Theoretical equations describing the intensity output of the multi-section SLD configuration are presented. It is found that these equations are able to …

This study investigated the relationships between adult attachment style, memories of early bonding experiences, and five different types of anxiety. The participants were 201 undergraduate psychology students, whose attachment styles, early bonding memories, and tendency toward the five anxiety types were measured through the use of self-report instruments. In this thesis the utility of a bivariate gamma distribution is explored. In the field of nutritional epidemiology a nutrition density transformation is used to reduce collinearity. This phenomenon will be shown to result due to the independent variables following a bivariate gamma model. In the field of radiation oncology paired comparison of variances is often performed. The bivariate gamma model is also appropriate for fitting correlated variances. A method for simulating bivariate gamma random variables is presented. Grass carp reovirus (GCRV) is a member of the Aquareovirus genus of the family Reoviridae, a large family of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) viruses infecting plants, insects, fishes and mammals. We report the first subnanometer-resolution three-dimensional structures of both GCRV core and virion by cryoelectron microscopy. These structures have allowed the delineation of interactions among the over 1000 molecules in this enormous macromolecular machine and a detailed comparison with other dsRNA viruses at the secondary-structure level. The GCRV core structure shows that the inner proteins have strong structural similarities with those of orthoreoviruses even at the level of secondary-structure elements, indicating …

Intracellular responses to external stimuli require reception of the message at the plasma membrane followed by encoding and transmission of the message to its effectors downstream. In this process, diverse cellular responses are mediated by many redundant molecular players. The apparent generality and redundancy of many kinases, such as the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), suggests that signal transduction must gain specificity through tight regulation. Diffusion and random collisions of relevant signaling components seem insufficient to explain the multilayered complexity observed in cell signaling cascades. Emerging hypotheses suggest that signaling machinery may achieve enhanced specificity and control by exploiting the compartmentalization …

Molecular simulation is an experiment performed on a system defined by a molecular model. In recent years much of the effort to advance molecular simulation has been put toward improving the quality and quantity of information that it provides. These efforts have been very successful, and perhaps have improved the utility of molecular simulation even more than advances in raw computing power occurring over the same period.
