Disability, Vulnerability, And The Limits Of Antidiscrimination, Ani B. Satz Jan 2008

Disability, Vulnerability, And The Limits Of Antidiscrimination, Ani B. Satz

Faculty Articles

Despite the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), disabled Americans face substantial barriers to entry into the workplace, lack material supports including health care and transportation, and may not receive reasonable accommodation that best supports their functioning. In addition, individuals with impairments have difficulty qualifying as disabled for disability protections. In light of these problems, some commentators suggest that a civil rights or antidiscrimination approach to disability discrimination—an approach for which activists fought for twenty years prior to the enactment of the ADA—may not adequately address disability discrimination. Some critics advocate a return to the social …

Social Network Analysis Of Video Bloggers' Community, John Warmbrodt, Hong Sheng, Richard H. Hall Jan 2008

Social Network Analysis Of Video Bloggers' Community, John Warmbrodt, Hong Sheng, Richard H. Hall

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Video blogs (or vlogs) have become increasingly popular in recent years. As the main motivation for vlogging is to interact with other vloggers, it is important to investigate the structure of the videobloggers' community and the interactions among vloggers. This research conducted a quantitative analysis using social network analysis. A list of personal vloggers was identified from VlogDIR and linking patters of vlogs were analyzed. The results suggest that video bloggers' community is highly decentralized and exhibits a core/periphery structure.

An Unidentified Filarial Species And Its Impact On Fitness In Wild Populations Of The Black-Footed Ferret (Mustela Nigripes), Samantha M. Wisely, Jo Gayle Howard, Steven A. Williams, Odile Bain, Rachel M. Santymire, Katherine D. Bardsley, Elizabeth S. Williams

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Disease can threaten the restoration of endangered species directly by substantially decreasing host survival or indirectly via incremental decreases in survival and reproduction. During a biomedical survey of reintroduced populations of the highly endangered black-footed ferret from 2002 to 2005, microfilariae discovered in the blood were putatively identified as Dirofilaria immitis, and widespread screening was initiated using a commercially available antigen-based ELISA test. A subset of animals (n = 16) was screened for D. immitis using a highly sensitive PCR-based assay. Microfilariae were also molecularly and morphologically characterized. Of 198 animals at six reintroduction sites, 12% had positive results using …

Low Temperature (23 °C) Increases Expression Of Biofilm-, Cold-Shock- And Rpos-Dependent Genes In Escherichia Coli K-12, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Suzin Um, Natalie M. Pérez, Abby L. Berns, Amy J. Malhowski, Sarah Young Jan 2008

Low Temperature (23 °C) Increases Expression Of Biofilm-, Cold-Shock- And Rpos-Dependent Genes In Escherichia Coli K-12, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Suzin Um, Natalie M. Pérez, Abby L. Berns, Amy J. Malhowski, Sarah Young

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Temperature serves as a cue to regulate gene expression in Escherichia coli and other bacteria. Using DNA microarrays, we identified 297 genes whose expression is increased at 23 6C compared to 37 6C in E. coli K-12. Of these genes, 122 are RpoS-controlled, confirming genome-wide the model that low temperature serves as a primary cue to trigger the general stress response. Several genes expressed at 23 6C overlap with the cold-shock response, suggesting that strategies used to adapt to sudden shifts in temperature also mediate long-term growth at 23 6C. Another category of genes more highly expressed at 23 6C …

High Voltage Bias Waveform Generator For An Rf Mems Microswitch, James A. Brandt Jan 2008

High Voltage Bias Waveform Generator For An Rf Mems Microswitch, James A. Brandt

Master's Theses and Capstones

An integrated high voltage bias driver for a Radio Frequency Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (RF MEMS) microswitch is proposed. The design and implementation in a 0.7mum integrated circuit process with high and low voltage transistors is shown along with tested results. High voltage Double-Diffused Metal Oxide Semiconductor (DMOS) transistors in combination with low voltage digital logic provide a non-linear solution that achieves rise and fall times of 1mus while keeping power use to a minimum. System design and tradeoffs are presented for alternate approaches and combinations as well as future integration with Direct Current--Direct Current (DC-DC) voltage conversion and an internally generated …

Eelgrass In The Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire And Maine: Monitoring Eelgrass Decline And Educating Local Students, Nora Thompson Beem Jan 2008

Eelgrass In The Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire And Maine: Monitoring Eelgrass Decline And Educating Local Students, Nora Thompson Beem

Master's Theses and Capstones

Eelgrass monitoring efforts in the Great Bay Estuary (GBE), New Hampshire and Maine, by the New Hampshire Port Authority Mitigation Project (Chp. II) and Nutrient Pollution Indicator (NPI) testing (Chp. III) both confirmed a recent trend of eelgrass decline within the GBE. The decline has been most noticeable in the mid-estuary, where four major tributaries drain into the GBE. Eelgrass beds in proximity to Portsmouth's wastewater treatment facility have also experienced decline, highlighting the effects of such point sources on the eelgrass population.

In an effort to introduce eelgrass, its recent decline and its role in the ecology of the …

Educating The General Public About Brain Injuries, Jesse Edwards Williams Jan 2008

Educating The General Public About Brain Injuries, Jesse Edwards Williams

Master's Theses and Capstones

The purpose of this investigation is to determine if exposure to educational materials regarding acquired brain injuries (ABI) can have a positive impact on the attitudes and beliefs of the general public. The findings of this research will help determine the values of educating the general public and help determine future methods for educating the public about ABI.

Misconceptions about ABI are still present today. The results of this investigation demonstrate that responses significantly differed depending on what methods of instruction respondents received.

Numerical Investigations Of Langmuir Circulation And Internal Waves, Jeremy Blanchard Jan 2008

Numerical Investigations Of Langmuir Circulation And Internal Waves, Jeremy Blanchard

Master's Theses and Capstones

The mixed layer is a region of enhanced mass, momentum and heat transport and as such is thought to significantly impact both the large and small scale processes in the ocean and atmosphere. Langmuir circulation (LC) and internal waves (IW) have been shown to be dominant contributors to upper ocean mixing and have, though separately, been studied extensively; however, little is known about how they interact. Langmuir circulation is a wind and surface-wave driven instability that manifests as counter-rotating vortices roughly aligned with the wind. Internal waves, whose surface signatures are often visible from ships and satellites, have the ability …

Individual-Based Artificial Ecosystems For Design And Optimization, Srinivasa Shivakar Vulli, Sanjeev Agarwal Jan 2008

Individual-Based Artificial Ecosystems For Design And Optimization, Srinivasa Shivakar Vulli, Sanjeev Agarwal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Individual-Based modeling has gained popularity over the last decade, mainly due to its proven ability to address a variety of problems, including modeling complex systems from bottom-up, providing relationships between component level and system level parameters, and relating emergent system level behaviors from simple component level interactions. Availability of computational power to run simulation models with thousands to millions of agents is another driving force in the wide-spread adoption of individual-Based modeling. in this paper, we propose an individual-Based modeling approach to solve engineering design and optimization problems using artificial ecosystems (AES). the problem to be solved is "mapped" to …

Generalized Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Formulation-Based Neural Network Control Of Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Zheng Chen, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2008

Generalized Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Formulation-Based Neural Network Control Of Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Zheng Chen, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we consider the use of nonlinear networks towards obtaining nearly optimal solutions to the control of nonlinear discrete-time (DT) systems. The method is based on least squares successive approximation solution of the generalized Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (GHJB) equation which appears in optimization problems. Successive approximation using the GHJB has not been applied for nonlinear DT systems. The proposed recursive method solves the GHJB equation in DT on a well-defined region of attraction. The definition of GHJB, pre-Hamiltonian function, HJB equation, and method of updating the control function for the affine nonlinear DT systems under small perturbation assumption are proposed. …
