Dna Binding By Ru(Ii)-Bis(Bipyridine)-Pteridinyl Complexes, Shannon Dalton, Samantha Glazier, Belinda Leung, Sanda Win, Sharon J. Nieter Burgmayer

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

The interactions of five bis(bipyridyl) Ru(II) complexes of pteridinyl-phenanthroline ligands with calf thymus DNA have been studied. The pteridinyl extensions were selected to provide hydrogen-bonding patterns complementary to the purine and pyrimidine bases of DNA and RNA. The study includes three new complexes [Ru(bpy)2 (L-pterin)]2+, [Ru(bpy)2(L-amino)]2+, and [Ru(bpy)2 (L-diamino)]2+ (bpy is 2,20-bipyridine and L-pterin, L-amino, and L-diamino are phenanthroline fused to pterin, 4-aminopteridine, and 2,4-diaminopteridine), two previously reported complexes [Ru(bpy)2(L-allox)]2+ and [Ru(bpy)2(L-Me2allox)]2+ (L-allox and L-Me2allox are phenanthroline fused to alloxazine and 1,3-dimethyalloxazine), the well-known DNA intercalator [Ru(bpy)2 (dppz)]2+ (dppz is dipyridophenazine), and the negative control [Ru(bpy)3]2+. Reported are the syntheses …

Virtual Transfer Price Negotiations:Unintended Interactions With Incentive Systems, Greenberg H. R., Greenberg S. P., Sakthi Mahenthiran

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Despite decades of research concerning the impact of computer-mediated communication (CMC) on decision-making, the potential interaction with the organization's management control system has just recently received attention. Media naturalness theory is used to develop hypotheses concerning the interactions of communication medium with the incentive pay scheme, a ubiquitous aspect of management control systems. A laboratory experiment was used to examine the interactions between two treatments: face-to-face negotiations versus virtual (computer-mediated) negotiations and cooperative versus competitive incentive pay schemes. Buyer-seller dyads negotiated the price and quantity of the transferred goods. Results indicate that while virtual negotiations are more efficient in terms …

Promissory Estoppel And The Protection Of Interpersonal Trust , John J. Chung Jan 2008

Promissory Estoppel And The Protection Of Interpersonal Trust , John J. Chung

Cleveland State Law Review

This paper examines the role of trust in promissory estoppel and the extent to which the law should protect trust when a promise is made. Part II of this Article summarizes some of the scholarship discussing the nature and role of trust. In particular, it discusses the role of trust in a market economy, and the related role of trust in Contracts law. Part III examines whether there is a difference between trust and reliance, and whether it matters. Part III further asserts that a separate discussion of trust is beneficial because it has the potential to guide and inform …

Models And Games: The Difference Between Explanation And Understanding For Lawyers And Ethicists , Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2008

Models And Games: The Difference Between Explanation And Understanding For Lawyers And Ethicists , Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Cleveland State Law Review

There is value for lawyers in thinking about constructs of rules as games on one hand, or models on the other. Games are real in a way models are not. Games have "thingness"--an independent reality-and they can be played. Models have "aboutness"-they map onto something else that is real for the sake of simplification and explanation. But models and games are not dichotomous as the preceding claim makes them out to be. Sometimes models look just like games, and sometimes games can serve as models. Because models look like games, we may come to believe they are real-that the models …

Effect Of Redox-Cycling Agents On Nitric Oxide Synthase Activity In Vitro And Modulation Of Protein Expression In Vivo: No Nitric Oxide Synthase In Mitochondria, Priya Venkatakrishnan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This Dissertation describes studies conducted in three areas dealing with the interaction of redox-active compounds with the flavin- and heme- containing enzyme, neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS). They are as follows:

I. Studies were initiated using extracts from several varieties of tobacco to identify constituent(s) that could interact with nNOS. Results from [14C]-L-arginine to [14C]-L-citrulline conversion assays to which tobacco extracts were individually added, indicate that there are nNOS inhibitors present in tobacco and they are non-polar, lipophilic and non-volatile in nature. In addition, results from assays in which the tobacco-derived redox-active compound, 2,3,6- …

Augmented Control Of Hands Free Voice Prostheses, Brian Madden, James Condron, Ted Burke, Eugene Coyle

Conference Papers

Laryngectomy patients often use an electrolarynx to facilitate speech following a tracheotomy. Devices of this type provide the most intelligible means of communication for tracheotomy patients. However, the electro-larynx has inherent drawbacks such as the buzzing monotonic sound emitted, the need for a free hand to operate the device, and the difficulty experienced by many tracheotomy patients in adapting to use it. The most effective means of addressing the shortcomings of existing electro-larynges is to provide the user with a hands-free facility. This allows the user to perform other manual tasks whilst speaking, or simply to communicate more effectively through …

A Study On The Use Of Ontologies To Represent Collective Knowledge, John Mcauley Jan 2008

A Study On The Use Of Ontologies To Represent Collective Knowledge, John Mcauley

Masters

The development of ontologies has become an area of considerable research interest over the past number of years. Domain ontologies are often developed to represent a shared understanding that in turn indicates cooperative effort by a user community. However, the structure and form that an ontology takes is predicated both on the approach of the developer and the cooperation of the user community. A shift has taken place in recent years from the use of highly specialised and expressive ontologies to simpler knowledge models, progressively developed by community contribution. It is within this context that this thesis investigates the use …
