Tools For The Assessment Of Undergraduate Research Outcomes, Linda Rueckert Jan 2008

Tools For The Assessment Of Undergraduate Research Outcomes, Linda Rueckert

Psychology & Gerontology Faculty Publications

The recent focus on the importance of assessment has resulted in the development of a number of tools to assess student learning outcomes (e.g. Angelo & Cross, 1993). However, most of these tools have focused on what students learn in the classroom. The outcomes of student involvement in research tend to be less well defined, and therefore more difficult to measure, than the outcomes of traditional classroom learning. Nevertheless, some of the existing assessment tools may be appropriate for the assessment of learning through research, and others have recently been developed explicitly for that purpose (e.g. Lopatto, 2004; Tariq, Stefani, …

Photoperiod Alters Phase Difference Between Activity Onset In Vivo And Mper2::Luc Peak In Vitro, Carl T. Mickman, Jeremy S. Stubblefield, Mary E. Harrington, Dwight E. Nelson Jan 2008

Photoperiod Alters Phase Difference Between Activity Onset In Vivo And Mper2::Luc Peak In Vitro, Carl T. Mickman, Jeremy S. Stubblefield, Mary E. Harrington, Dwight E. Nelson

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Photoperiod is a significant modulator of behavior and physiology for many organisms. In rodents changes in photoperiod are associated with changes in circadian period and photic resetting of circadian pacemakers. Utilizing rhythms of in vivo behavior and in vitro mPer2::luc expression, we investigated whether different entrainment photoperiods [light:dark (L:D) 16:8 and L:D 8:16] alter the period or phase relationships between these rhythms and the entraining light cycle in Per2::luc C57BL/6J mice. We also tested whether mPer2::luc rhythms differs in anterior and posterior suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) slices. Our results demonstrate that photoperiod significantly changes the timing of the mPer2::luc peak relative …

Does Moose Browsing Threaten European Aspen Regeneration In Koli National Park, Finland?, Sauli Harkonen, Kalle Eerikainen, Riikka Lahteenmaki, Risto Heikkila

Aspen Bibliography

Large European aspen (Populus tremula) trees host hundreds of species of which many are threatened species of conifer-dominated, old-growth boreal forests. Aspen is also one of the deciduous tree species most intensively used by moose (Alces alces) in Finland. In conservation areas aspen regeneration is facilitated by large-scale disturbances, especially fires and windstorms, and also by mortality of individual trees and small-scale disturbances that create small openings. These aggregated patches of young aspens provide high quality feeding sites for moose. In Finland, it has been hypothesized that intense browsing pressure by moose on aspen may prevent new aspen cohorts from …

Functional Domains Of The Fatty Acid Transport Proteins: Studies Using Protein Chimeras, Concetta C. Dirusso, Dina Darwis, Thomas Obermeyer, Paul N. Black Jan 2008

Functional Domains Of The Fatty Acid Transport Proteins: Studies Using Protein Chimeras, Concetta C. Dirusso, Dina Darwis, Thomas Obermeyer, Paul N. Black

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Fatty acid transport proteins (FATP) function in fatty acid trafficking pathways, several of which have been shown to participate in the transport of exogenous fatty acids into the cell. Members of this protein family also function as acyl CoA synthetases with specificity towards very long chain fatty acids or bile acids. These proteins have two identifying sequence motifs: The ATP/AMP motif, an approximately 100 amino acid segment required for ATP binding and common to members of the adenylate-forming super family of proteins, and the FATP/VLACS motif that consists of approximately 50 amino acid residues and is restricted to members of …

The Human Hyaluronan Receptor For Endocytosis (Hare/Stabilin-2) Is A Systemic Clearance Receptor For Heparin, Ed Harris, Janet A. Weigel, Paul H. Weigel Jan 2008

The Human Hyaluronan Receptor For Endocytosis (Hare/Stabilin-2) Is A Systemic Clearance Receptor For Heparin, Ed Harris, Janet A. Weigel, Paul H. Weigel

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The hyaluronic acid receptor for endocytosis (HARE; also designated Stabilin-2) mediates systemic clearance of hyaluronan and chondroitin sulfates from the vascular and lymphatic circulations. The internalized glycosaminoglycans are degraded in lysosomes, thus completing their normal turnover process. Sinusoidal endothelial cells of human liver, lymph node, and spleen express two HARE isoforms of 315 and 190 kDa. Here we report that the 190- and 315-kDa HARE isoforms, expressed stably either in Flp-In 293 cell lines or as soluble ectodomains, specifically bind heparin (Hep). The Kd for Hep binding to purified 190- and 315-kDa HARE ectodomains was 17.2 ± 4.9 and …

Of Persons And The Criminal Law: (Second Tier) Personhood As A Prerequisite For Victimhood, Luis E. Chiesa Jan 2008

Of Persons And The Criminal Law: (Second Tier) Personhood As A Prerequisite For Victimhood, Luis E. Chiesa

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The trial of Michael Vick illustrates how our current criminal laws increasingly treat nonhuman creatures as "victims," with all of the consequences that this entails, including the possibility to order that restitution be paid to the animals. In light of these considerations, it is fair to say that from a purely descriptive point of view, nonhuman creatures can qualify for victimhood. This does not mean, however, that this conclusion is normatively appealing. Some have argued that this approach is profoundly misguided, given that the criminal law should only aim to safeguard the rights of humans.

Studying Scratching/Buffing Mechanism Of The Clearcoats And Improving The Technique And Devices/Materials In Automobile Refinish Work, Chakravarthi Mallikarjun Nagolu Jan 2008

Studying Scratching/Buffing Mechanism Of The Clearcoats And Improving The Technique And Devices/Materials In Automobile Refinish Work, Chakravarthi Mallikarjun Nagolu

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

As automotive coating technology advances, the manufacturers have developed new generations of after-market coatings as well as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) coatings. The new coatings possess much stronger mar/scratch resistance either with raised elastic modulus and hardness or with the ability of self-healing. These pose new challenges to the auto-body refinish work. In the refinishing process, the after-market coatings are applied to the bodies (surfaces), and then the imperfections, which are inevitable during the application process due to the environmental dust in the shops, will be buffed out to make a smooth and shining surface. The new coatings are very …

Comparison Of Estradiol-Trenbolone Acetate Implant Programs For Yearling Steers Of Two Genotypes, Robbi H. Pritchard

South Dakota Beef Report, 2008

Yearling steers (n = 400) were used to evaluate relative payout periods for implants when feeding high grain content diets. Implant treatments included (1) control (nonimplanted), (2) Synovex Plus, (3) revalor-s, and (4) Ralgro-revalor-s. The Synovex Plus (2), revalor-s (3) and Ralgro (4) were administered on day 1. The reimplant with revalor-s (4) was admnistered after 56 d on feed. Steers were managed in two groups. Initial BW and days fed were 782 lb, 131 d (Group I), and 661 lb, 145 d (Group II). Implants increased production rates and efficiencies, increased carcass size and reduced marbling when compared to …

Volume And Cost Implications Of Product Portfolio Complexity, Mark A. Jacobs Jan 2008

Volume And Cost Implications Of Product Portfolio Complexity, Mark A. Jacobs

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

Business leaders are concerned about the impacts of increasing levels of product portfolio complexity since many sense that complexity related costs such as order management, procurement, and inventory threaten to undermine operational efficiencies and consume profits. Even so, managers do not fully understand the extent and breadth of the impacts of product portfolio complexity. A more complete understanding of the operational effects of product portfolio complexity is lacking partially because researchers have not yet offered a robust theoretical perspective or studied it in a focused controlled way; until now. Herein, measures of product portfolio complexity are developed and related to …

Waiting For Child Developmental And Rehabilitation Services: An Overview Of Issues And Needs, Anton R. Miller, Robert Armstrong, Louise C. Mâsse, Anne F. Klassen, Jane Shen, Maureen E. O’Donnell

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Concern about the length of time that children, young people, and families may have to wait to access assessment, diagnostic, interventional, therapeutic, and supportive child developmental and rehabilitation (CDR) services is widespread, but adequate data collection and research on this issue remain limited. We review key concepts and issues relevant to waiting for CDR services from the published literature, a national workshop devoted to this topic, and international experience. We conclude that gaps in data, evidence, and consensus challenge our ability to address the issue of waiting for CDR services in a systematic way. A program of research coupled with …
